Elsa looks at Anna, at the encouraging smile on her face, and nods. "Twins are normally smaller, right?" she asks. "Because there's no room?"
The doctor nods, but doesn't give a verbal answer. He turns on the machine, pressing the probe to Elsa's stomach as a fast rhythm sounds through the speaker.
Anna knows what it means. She leans close to Elsa and squeezes her hand tight. Doesn't say anything because it's not her place to speak, even when Elsa says, "Anna...?"
"I'm sorry, Elsa," the doctor interrupts gently. "There's only one heartbeat."
