Chapter 4: The Meeting
I woke up the following day with a large smile on my face. Today was the day when I was going to meet my old friends. I was really looking forward to it, we were gonna have so much fun! I started at the ceiling for a while and then jumped off the bed. I walked to my brother's bed and held a laugh. He had literally fallen off it. I bent down and started poking him.
"Taichi, wake up."
"Hmmm." He said without opening his eyes.
"Wake up, we're gonna meet everyone today."
"I wanna sleep, Hikari." He opened his eyes slightly and then closed them again.
"Come on, Taichi." I said, grabbing his arms and pushing him.
"Alright, alright." He rubbed his face as he sat on the floor. "What time is it?"
"Eight o'clock." I replied. "We're supposed to meet them at Shibuya station at nine thirty. So you better get ready."
"We still have plenty of time. Shibuya isn't far from here."
"True, but you take too long to get ready."
"I do not!"
"Wanna bet?"
He sighed. "No, you always win."
I gave a triumphant smile and walked out of the bedroom.
*****
"Good morning." Mrs. Kamiya said to his sleep son when he entered the kitchen.
"Good morning." He replied with a sleepy voice.
"You're running late, brother." I teased as I finished my breakfast.
"Don't start, Hikari." He snapped. "You woke me up in the middle of the night."
"I woke you at eight o'clock! You were going to have a serious cramp if I didn't. You were almost off your bed."
"Whatever." He said, ending the conversation.
"Where are you two going?" Yuuko asked, looking to her son and then to her daughter.
"I arranged a meeting with the destined kids." I said after I swallowed my last piece of bread.
"That's nice, Hikari. I haven't seen some of them for a while. I didn't know you still kept in touch."
"Well, not exactly." I began explaining. "I'm still friends with Takeru and Taichi is pretty close to Sora, Yamato and Koushiro, but that's about it. We somehow moved on with our lives and stopped meeting that much."
"I see. Well, I'm glad you decided to bring everyone together again." She said proudly. "I hope you two have fun."
"Thanks, mom. We will." I turned to my brother. "We are almost running late."
"Relax, little sister. It's still a quarter to nine."
"I told you nine-thirty? It's actually nine o'clock."
Taichi's eyes widened and he spit his milk. I knew I was in trouble, so I ran as fast as I could.
"HIKARI!"
*****
Sora was the first one to arrive. She sat down on a beach near the subway entrance and started reading her book. It didn't take long until Jyou arrived in his fancy clothes.
"Sora?"
"Jyou, hi!" She exclaimed as she stood up and hugged him. "It's been so long! How are you?"
"I'm great, thanks. I guess school and life has been keeping all of us busy, right? Anyway, how are you?"
"I'm great too." She smiled. "It definitely is. My tennis teacher signed me up for Wimbledon next year."
"Wow, Wimbledon? I didn't know you were into tennis."
"I wasn't." She shrugged. "I learned to enjoy it as I was growing up. Now I'm also learning the flower arranging skills."
"Really? I remember how much you hated that."
"Yeah, well… I figured it was time to connect more with my mother."
The fifteen year old boy opened his mouth to reply, but was interrupted by Koushiro's arrival.
"Hey guys."
"Hello." Sora and Jyou said together.
"I thought Taichi and Hikari would be here by now."
"You know Taichi. He's always running late."
"He still does that?"
"As long as I can remember."
"Why did you bring your notebook?" Jyou asked him.
"It's to contact Mimi via skype." The red haired boy answered. "She won't be able to come since she's living in the United States."
"Wait, what? When did that happen?"
"I think it was a year and a half ago, I can't remember exactly."
"Man, I feel really left out. I wouldn't be surprised if you told me Yamato has a rock band now."
"And I do."
Jyou, Koushiro and Sora turned around and saw Yamato and Takeru a few feet away.
"Nothing surprises me anymore."
"Look at how grown you are, Takeru!" Koushiro said looking at his friend up and down. "You are taller than me!"
Takeru couldn't help but smile. "It's because I've been taking basketball classes for over a year."
"If it keeps that way, he will be way taller than me." Yamato stated.
"That's not true." The younger blonde said shyly.
"Where are Taichi and Hikari?" Sora said looking at her watch. "It's almost nine-thirty and they aren't here yet."
"We're here." Taichi said as we walked towards everyone.
"Looks like we're the last ones to arrive."
"Are we ready to go?" Koushiro asked.
"I guess so." Jyou replied as he fixed his glass.
"Don't forget me!" Someone screamed out of breath.
We turned around towards the voice, though everyone knew who it belonged to.
"Mimi!" Sora exclaimed as she got closer and they hugged. "What are you doing here?"
"I couldn't miss this day, could I? I booked a flight as soon as we talked on the phone yesterday. I came straight from the airport."
"I'm glad you're here, Mimi." Taichi said with a mischievous smile on his face.
The pink haired girl felt her cheeks burn. "Thanks, me too."
We all entered the subway station to go to our destination.
*****
"It feels like yesterday." Sora said after buying her ticket. "When we were here and that baby kept pulling Pyocomon and I had to pretend I was doing mimics to protect her."
"Wow, I forgot about that." Takeru walked to her. "You told his mother you bought her at a store and everyone rushed outside to buy it. I imagine their disappointment when they found out there was no store at all."
"I know." She started laughing and the blonde joined her.
"We've been through so many adventures in this world as well." Taichi stated absentmindedly.
"Myotismon did give us some trouble." Koushiro added. "You remember the day SkullMeramon almost destroyed the Tokyo Tower?"
"I do." Mimi replied. "Sora and I were trying to find the eighth children. I was shocked to see a man wearing a coat during summer. If you and Taichi weren't around, we wouldn't have defeated him."
"Speak for yourself." Sora said jokingly. "Birdramon could easily have evolved to Garudamon and finished him."
"But she didn't." Taichi said proudly. "Greymon turned into MetalGreymon and did the job."
"This train is taking too long, isn't it?" Jyou complained, trying to change the subject.
"What's wrong, Jyou?" Yamato asked. "You don't want to remember old times?"
"It's not that. Talking about it makes me miss Gomamon. I worry about him sometimes and wonder how he is."
We lowered their heads, thinking about our partners. The train arrived right after.
"I'm sure he's fine. I was able to contact Tentomon a few days ago and he told me they're all fine." Koushiro sat down next to Jyou, Yamato and Takeru.
"I wish I could see Patamon."
"And Palmon, too."
"But we can't. Not personally though." Sora said sadly.
"Yeah, the portal is closed." Yamato completed and their shared a brief look.
"Our time there is over, we have to accept it."
"So, Hikari… what are our plans for today?" Takeru asked me.
"I haven't planned it exactly… activities, I mean. I just thought we could spend the day together and do what we are doing now. Isn't it fun?"
"I forgot how much I missed you all." Mimi said teary. "It's like I've known you for years and I've never seen any of you before summer camp."
"I know the feeling. Let's make a promise." Taichi looked at everyone.
"A promise?"
"Let's promise to never lose touch again. I know I'm still close to some of you, but it's always better when we are all together like this." The brunette stretched his hand.
"We have our differences, but managed to get along quite well."
"I'm in." Sora put her hand over her best friends'.
One by one, we did the same. I really thought they were all being honest.
*****
When the train got empty enough, the ones who were standing up went to sit down somewhere else. Sora turned her head and glanced over Yamato, who was happily chatting with his brother. She put on a determined look on her face and went to talk to him.
"Sora!" Takeru said excitedly.
"What do you want?" The other blonde said coldly.
"Why are you talking to her like this?"
Yamato sighed in frustration, but didn't reply.
"I was wondering if I could talk to you." She addressed to him.
"We have nothing to talk about."
"You didn't let me explain."
"I think you were pretty clear."
"What's going on?" Taichi said from across the hall, causing his best friends to turn their heads.
"Nothing, we're done here."
The auburn girl noticed the hint and went back to her place.
"You seriously need to stop treating people like this." Takeru complained.
"Why don't you tell her to stop lecturing people?"
"What?"
"Nevermind." Yamato shrugged.
"If you keep treating her this badly, you will lose any chance you have with her."
"You are delusional, Takeru. We could never work as a couple."
"You won't know until you try."
"Except I don't wanna try. Now can you stop doing this?"
"I just think she can make you less broody, but alright." Takeru frowned and leaned back on his seat.
*****
We arrived at their final destination about ten minutes later. I was leading everyone, though they knew the place better than me.
"I can't believe you brought us here, Hikari." Taichi told me. "I thought we were meeting elsewhere."
"Yeah, I wanted it to be a surprise so I lied about the place to everyone. I'm sorry."
"This place holds so many memories." Sora said as she went upstairs, with Mimi next to her.
"What was that on the subway?"
"What?" The red haired girl looked at her. "Oh, you mean the incident with Yamato?"
"That's right."
"Well… I accidentally implied that he enjoyed having girls at his feet all the time because most of rock stars do."
"Sora!"
"I know, I know. I was trying to apologize to him, but he won't let me."
"Give him some time, he'll come around."
"I don't know."
"Have faith, it will work out. You two are friends."
"Thanks, Mimi." She smiled kindly.
"He won't be mad at you forever. I swear you will marry him."
"Don't be ridiculous, Mimi. We are nothing alike."
"I wouldn't be so sure."
"Okay, shut up please." She said laughing.
*****
The rest of us made our way upstairs and dropped our bags in the cabin. I stood by the porch as everyone made a circle and sat down. It was my first time at the summer camp. Well, it wasn't actually summer camp, but you get me. I couldn't come the first time because I had flu, but I can only imagine what the others must be feeling being here again.
"Hikari, aren't you going to join us?" Takeru looked over Koushiro.
"I am." I smiled. "I was just thinking about something."
"Thinking about what?"
"How weird it must be to all of you to come here after a while."
"It's a shame you couldn't be here during summer camp."
"Yeah." I looked down.
"I gotta admit you had a great idea bringing us here. I wouldn't be this creative."
"You are never creative, Taichi." I teased. "But thank you."
I was about to sit down next to Jyou when something unusual happened. I screamed at the same time Koushiro's eyes widened in absolute shock. No one knew where to look or what was going on. Eventually we all turned towards the waves in front of us.
"What's going on, Koushiro?" Takeru asked.
"This… this can't be true." It was all he could say.
"This isn't happening!" Yamato exclaimed.
"Oh, it is… and I still don't like it."
"The portal is opening again!" Mimi said cheerfully.
"It's like they knew we would be here. The portal hasn't opened since we came back after defeating Apocalymon." The computer geek said.
"Except we are not running away this time." Taichi added with his usual courage. "Let's go."
He jumped into the waves. We all swallowed hard and followed him. One by one we were involved by the water that would lead us to the Digital World.
