Chapter 8: Extra Classes
Sora was scanning through the school club's pamphlet since she had finished her math assignment. Yamato couldn't help but stare at her and be amazed at her focus at such task. He was eager to ask her who she had a crush on, but was he ready for her answer? What if it was him? He certainly wasn't prepared to whatever reply she could give. What if it wasn't? He couldn't help but feel slightly jealous and think whoever it is, it was a damn lucky person. The girl suddenly realized his eyes were on her and she turned around so quickly he has no time to turn away. Yamato mentally cursed when he felt his cheeks burn with embarrassment.
"Is something wrong? Do you need any help with your work?"
"No. I…" He looked down at the paper on his desk. "I'm almost done."
"Alright then." She smiled. "Can I see it?"
"Uh… sure. I guess." He shrugged as Sora grabbed the paper and examined his work.
"I'm afraid some answers are wrong." She frowned. "You are spending way too much time with Taichi. You were never this bad at math, as far as I remember."
"I guess I lost my way." He rubbed the back of his neck and smiled when he noticed her giggling. "What are you looking at, by the way?"
"Oh." She looked at the paper on her hands. "I just wanted to see what extra-curricular classes they are offering this year."
"Are you planning to join one of them?" Yamato asked with an eyebrow raised. "I thought you were busy enough with tennis as it is."
"I am. I just thought it would be nice to broaden my horizons for once, you know? I'm not sure if I want to pursue tennis as a profession, so I figured I'd start trying different things."
"Do you have anything in mind?"
"Not really." Sora shrugged. "But school has just started, I guess I can think about it later."
"Yeah." He nodded. "Hey, are you joining us for lunch today?"
"Sure. Is that a problem to you?"
"No, not at all. I kind of missed having you around."
"Me too." She smiled.
"I've been meaning to ask you something." He said rather uneasily.
"What is it?"
"Well…" He cleared his throat. "I've heard you talking to Taichi a few days ago about boys and I got the feeling you had feelings for a guy."
Sora looked down and felt her face turn bright red. She began to feel ashamed and panicky knowing Yamato might have realized she had a crush on him. If that was true, there was no way she could spend time with everyone when he tagged along. She took a deep breath and tried to calm herself down.
"Oh, that. I only said that to make Taichi let it go. I don't have feelings for anyone at the moment."
"Are you sure? Because it didn't seem like it."
"What? Are you spying on me now?"
"No." He looked away and clapped his hands together. "I was just curious, that's all."
"Well, why does it matter to you if I have feelings for a boy? It's not like we are dating."
Sora failed to see Yamato's cheeks flush heavily because she was surprised at her not so subtle hint. She wondered to herself if she actually wanted him to know he was her crush. Was she really hoping he would come up and say he had a crush on her as well?
"Why would we be dating?" Yamato asked her after he composed himself. "We're just friends. Unless there's something you're not telling me."
"Of course not!" She replied quickly; her cheeks turning redder. "We're just friends. Besides, there are probably lots of girls after you. Girls that are much more interesting than me."
"Please." He couldn't believe she thought so low of herself. "Let's not go there again. You remember what happened last time."
"Fine." She nodded. "You still need to finish your assignment."
Yamato looked down at the math exercises and frowned.
Takeru and I walked out of the classroom as soon as the doorbell rang. We had just a boring history class. Don't get me wrong, I do like history, but the teacher has such a low voice that almost makes me wanna sleep. I cover my mouth with my hand as I yawn.
"Are you really that tired?"
"Not really." I looked at him. "It's just that our teacher can cause that effect on us. Don't you agree?"
"Not exactly." He said with a smile. "I find his classes quite interesting."
"You've always taken a liking for history, don't you?"
"I guess you can say that." He shrugged. "Hey, the extra-curricular classes are going to start next week. Are you thinking about joining any?"
"I don't think so. I'll just stick to the ballet classes. What about you?"
"I'm going to sign up for basketball this year again. Maybe we'll have better luck at the state competition this year."
"You did pretty good last year too." I said with a reassuring tone. "You made it to the quarter-finals. It's pretty huge, considering it was your first time in the tournament."
"Thanks. But our goal is to go further this time, maybe semi-finals."
"Well, I think you have the potential to take our team to the finals. The whole school would go crazy if you won."
"I have no doubt about that." Takeru laughed and I couldn't help but giggle.
"Can you imagine the commotion it would be if the soccer team won the national competition and Sora ranked high at Wimbledon?"
"I think the Teenage Wolves would be an underground band if that happened. And that's saying a lot. They would be forgotten right away."
"Speaking of the Teenage Wolves, there's something I've been meaning to ask you about."
"What's it?" He looked at me and suddenly I wasn't sure whether to bring this up or not.
"Well, I noticed Yamato reacts strangely everytime we mention Sora's name or whenever she's around."
"Oh. You have noticed it too?" He asked me with a surprising tone. "He sort of has a crush on her."
"So I wasn't just imagining things then." I placed a finger under my chin. "There was really something happening."
"I told him he should tell her. Maybe she feels the same way and they start dating."
"But do you think it's a good idea? I think this would put us in a very awkward position."
"What do you mean?"
"Don't get me wrong, I think it would be great if they get together. They have similar personalities and they could work out. But I guess it would be weird for the rest of us at first. You know, to see them act romantically."
"Yeah, I guess you have a point." Takeru looked away, taking in my words. "But I would love to have Sora as a sister-in-law. If only my brother weren't so stubborn."
"If it's meant to be, they will find their way to each other in the end."
"You're right." He looked down and then up again. "I was thinking of going to the Digital World after school. What do you think?"
"That's a great idea!" I said cheerfully. "I haven't seen Tailmon since we got back from our meeting. I miss her."
"I miss Patamon too. It's so weird to see the Digital World at such peace it almost makes me thing something is wrong."
"Don't say that. There haven't been some major threats so far. We wouldn't be able to do much now that our partners can't evolve past Tailmon and Angemon."
"You're right." But I still think something is about to happen. He thought as he looked out of the window.
Taichi was lying on the grass while Koushiro checked his e-mails when Sora and Yamato joined them.
"Where were you two?" The brunette asked.
"I was waiting for Yamato to finish his math assignment. He was having a hard time getting it done."
"Yamato struggling with math?" Koushiro said without looking at them. "Now that's a first. He's spending too much time with Taichi."
"That's what I told him." Sora put her hands on her hips. "He's beginning to get some of his traces."
"Hey, I'm here." Taichi protested. "Math sucks so much. No wonder why Yamato is getting bad at it."
"I'm not getting bad at it." Yamato defended himself. "I just kind of forgot about it. No big deal."
"Anyway, what are you two doing together? I thought there was some weird vibe going on between you."
Both Sora and Yamato looked away, unwilling to explain their reasons to Taichi and Koushiro. In fact, they never really talked about it.
"There's no such thing as "weird vibe" going on. I don't know how you came up with that idea."
"Oh there is." Taichi insisted. "Don't think I haven't noticed it."
"Look, if you are gonna be bitchy about it, I'll just go eat somewhere. I thought you said you missed me." Sora said impatiently.
"I'm sorry, Sora. I do miss you. Lunch isn't the same without having someone to just lay down on the grass with me and stare at the clouds."
"You're such a kid, Taichi." She mocked. "But I miss it too."
"You actually lie on the grass and stare at the clouds?" Koushiro finally looked up from his laptop.
"Yeah." Taichi said as though his friend was weird for never trying it out. "You'd be surprised at how fertile your imagination can be. You should really try it. This is also one of my and Sora's traditions for quite a while now. Whenever we feel sad or anger at something or someone, we'd call each other and meet at the park. You wouldn't believe how bizarre some of our labels were."
"I could use some of that now." Sora sat down and leaned over a tree. "It's been a while since last time."
"Are you upset over something?"
"No, I just…" She looked at her best friend. "Tennis classes will return next week and I'll start worrying about Wimbledon again."
"Sora is thinking about joining another club." Yamato revealed.
"I'm not thinking about anything. I was just looking at the pamphlet." She frowned. "I wanted to see what they had to offer."
"Good, because I wouldn't know how you could keep up with other activities since tennis takes pretty much all your free time. Your name is often brought up during soccer classes, you are really missed there."
"I really miss playing soccer, but I figured it was time to try something new. I enjoyed playing at the school team a lot."
"What about you, Koushiro?" Taichi turned his attention to the red haired boy. "Thinking about joining any clubs?"
"Hey, guys!" Takeru and I joined them. "I'm sorry we are a little late."
"Ah… you know?" Koushiro replied rather unsurely. "Just computer club I guess."
"What are you all up to?" I asked as I sat beside my brother.
"We are talking about which extra activities we are doing this year. Turns out we are going for the ones we did last year."
"I see." I nodded. "Takeru and I are thinking about going to the Digital World visit our partners after class."
"That's actually a great idea." Koushiro said happily. "I want to go with you."
"Me too." Taichi echoed his friend.
"I'm afraid I won't be able to go today." Sora said sadly. "I have to help my mother at the flower school."
"And I have to practice with the band. I'm sorry."
Taichi placed his hands behind his head and lay down on the grass again. "You two are no fun. You always have something to do."
"It's called 'having responsibilities'. You should really try it." Yamato teased.
"I'm fourteen. I have plenty of time to be responsible." He turned to Sora. "Do you still want to stare at the clouds?"
"Yes!" She replied as she lay next to him and looked up. "Look, that one looks like a bunny, don't you think?"
The brunette followed his best friend's finger and frowned. "Where did you take that idea? That thing barely looks like a bunny."
"Alright, what does it look like then?"
"You two are such dorks." I said playfully with a smile.
"You are dying to join us, aren't you, Hikari?"
"Yeah, right." I rolled my eyes.
"How come you and Sora have this tradition and never talked to me about it?" Koushiro asked.
"Am I sense a little jealousy from you?" Taichi smirked. "For what's it worth, we had this tradition before we met you."
"You still left me out. I won't forgive you."
"You are all complaining about how childish Taichi and I are looking, but I bet you really want to join us. But you don't want to look stupid to the other students."
"So, is three o'clock okay for everyone?"
"Sure." The computer geek nodded.
"Man, I really wish Mimi was here." The soccer player said. "She would love to do it, I think."
"Speaking of her." Sora looked at him. "I need to talk to you… alone."
"She asked you to talk to me, didn't she?"
"You know, you're really smart when you want to." She mocked. "Why don't you use your brain for school?"
"Go straight to the point, Takenouchi." Taichi said seriously.
"Alright." Sora sighed. "She asked me to…"
She was cut off because of school bell going off, indicating it was time for the afternoon classes. Takeru and I got caught in a conversation about the Digital World while he explained to me why he thought something was going to happen. Koushiro and Yamato were talking about the differences between high and elementary school; the computer expert carefully making mental notes so he wouldn't be so lost next year. Taichi and Sora purposely took their time collecting their bags and walking towards the building again.
"So… you were saying?"
"Right. She wants to know where you two stand. I mean, you two have been blatantly flirting with each other. Do you want to be with her or not?"
"I don't know." He put his hands behind his head. "We haven't even kissed yet. How are one supposed to know if they want to be someone without even doing that?"
"You got me there." She looked down and paused for a moment. "But you feel something for her, don't you?"
"I guess." Taichi shrugged. "She's attractive and funny. We're different, but I think we can work if we decided to become a couple."
"If you ask me, I think she's waiting for you to take the first step."
"First step? You mean, as in…?"
"Yes, Taichi. I mean kissing." Sora said impatiently.
"But, Sora, she's on the other side of the world! How am I supposed to kiss her when she's so far away?"
'That's what the Digital World is for. You two can meet there and finally go for it."
"I guess. We could arrange a time that wouldn't be bad for both of us and do that."
"Wow… you and Mimi, huh?"
"Yeah." He said in a low tone. "Speaking of it, when are you planning on telling the guy you like?"
"There is no guy, Taichi. I don't know where you got that idea."
"It's written all over your face, Sora. You can deny all you want, but everyone sees it. Maybe he feels the same way."
"I don't think so." She avoided eye contact with him. "I don't want to jeopardize everything."
"So it is Yamato then."
"What? He isn't the only boy I'm friends with, just so you know."
"Then who is it?"
"I'm sorry, Taichi. I know you're my best friend, but this is something personal. I have to go to class now, I'm sorry."
Taichi watched her head towards her classroom. The expression on his face showing that he didn't believe a word she said.
That's it. Next chapter there will feature a conversation between Mimi and Taichi, while Koushiro turns to Sora for help and Yamato confesses something to Takeru.
