Chapter 10: First Kiss
Sora and Koushiro were on the bench near the soccer field and the boy scratched his head, not sure how to star the conversation.
"So… Sora started the conversation and broke the ice.
"I'm sorry I couldn't open up to you yesterday. This is something really hard for me."
"It's okay, Koushiro." She said reassuringly. "It's never easy."
"I just couldn't turn to Taichi for this. He's not that good with this kind of thing."
Sora couldn't help but smile. She knew what kind of problem Koushiro was having, and Taichi was definitely not the smartest choice.
"So I assume you're having romantic issues, right?"
"I guess you can say so." He blushed lightly.
"Aww, you don't have to feel embarrassed, Koushiro. We all have them at some point."
"Are you saying you already did?"
"Well, I don't think it's a one-time thing. But, yeah, that's what I'm saying. Actually I am right now."
"Really?
"Yep."
"You don't have to tell me if you don't want to."
"No, it's fine. But you might want to sit down for this one."
Koushiro couldn't help but laugh. Sora knew how to lighten the mood and suddenly he wasn't so afraid to talk about it anymore.
"Lately I've been…" The red haired girl began. "Well, I've been developing something towards a boy."
"Who?" He asked, eagerly to know.
"It's… it's…Yamato."
"What?"
"I think I have feelings for Yamato." She sighed. "But I don't think he even sees me as a girl."
"I hear ya." Koushiro looked at her. "But you won't know unless you tell him. Who knows? Maybe he likes you back and is just waiting for a sign coming from you."
"You really think so?"
"Why not? What can happen?"
"He could say no." Sora paused. "But you're right. I can't know what he will say unless I tell him. Anyway, back to your problem. Do you like someone?"
The computer expert could feel his cheeks burn with embarrassment and hoped Sora wouldn't think he was stupid. The red haired girl smiled and laid her hand on his shoulder, making him look at her.
"It's alright, Koushiro. You can trust me, I won't make fun of you. But I won't push you to it."
"Thanks, Sora. I just don't know how to say it."
"I don't think there's a right way to do it. There's never a right moment either."
"Would you..." He said, unsure. "Would you help me with something?"
"Sure. What's it?"
"I kind of need to know if I'm a good kisser or not."
Koushiro was blushing heavily this time, and Sora couldn't help but smile.
"Of course."
He couldn't believe what he had heard. Was she actually agreeing with this?!
"What?"
"I need to know it too. I don't want to look bad if I ever get to confess to Yamato."
The boy smiled back at her. He couldn't thank her enough. They turned around and got closer to each other. Koushiro was actually surprised when Sora took the initiative. He was only able to relax after some seconds. They broke away after some minutes.
"So…" She asked, a little embarrassed.
"Wow."
"Was I good?"
"Yeah." He looked down. "Thanks again, Sora."
"Anytime." She smiled.
Sora and Yamato were waiting for Taichi to finish getting ready for school. Koushiro and I had to go earlier because we were in charge for getting things ready for class this week. The girl was sitting on the floor with her legs crossed while the blonde was leaning against the wall, next to the door.
"Finally." Yamato said when the door opened beside him.
"We are getting late for class because of you." Sora cleaned her dark green skirt and stood up.
"You two are so moody in the morning." Taichi complained. "Good morning to you too."
"Where's Hikari?"
"She left earlier to get everything ready." He yawned. "So, there is something I need to tell you about."
"What is it?"
"A few days ago I got a SOS message from Agumon on my digivice. So I went to the Digital World to see what was going on and I found this thing called digimental with the Courage symbol on it."
"What? A digimental?"
"Yeah, and then I tried to lift it and three lights came out."
"Wait, what does that mean?" Sora asked.
"I have no idea. So I sent an e-mail to Koushiro and someone called Miyako read it. Turns out she somehow found Hikari and she and Takeru came to my rescue."
"Miyako? That name sounds familiar." Yamato paused and thought for some seconds. "I think she's the girl who lives in the same building Takeru and my mother just moved in. They met in his first day at school."
"I see, but that's not all. Somehow Daisuke was able to go along with them."
"But how is that even possible? I thought only people who have a digivice would be able to go to the Digital World. Unless…"
"…Daisuke is a new Chosen Child." The blonde finished the tennis player's sentence.
"So a new enemy has appeared."
"Apparently, yes. I also saw his digivice and it's different than ours. The digimental I came across when I arrived at the Digital World is his. I have no idea what it means."
"Maybe it means our new enemy is stronger than the ones we faced three years ago."
"I don't like the sound of that." Sora said. "Besides, our partners can't evolve past Birdramon, Garurumon and Greymon. There's no way we can defeat them that way."
"I called Jyou and told him we will have a meeting in the park to decide what to do. A new situation has come up and we need to figure out a way to fight it."
"Okay, count me in."
"I have to practice with the band, but I'll leave it earlier so I can make it. I can't promise I'll be on time, though."
"That's fine, as long as you're there."
"Well, I have to head to class. I'll see you guys later."
"Sora, wait. We are going in the same direction." Yamato called out for her. "We'll catch up later, Taichi."
"Alright." The brunette smiled as his friends walked away.
Sora stopped paying attention to the teacher for quite a while. She was listening to a conversation between two of her classmates about first kisses. She couldn't help but wonder if Taichi or even Yamato had had their first kisses already. And as if he was somehow reading her mind, Yamato poked her in the arm.
"What are you thinking? You never seemed this distracted during art classes. I should be the one spacing out because it's beyond boring."
He smiled at his joke but Sora didn't seem to notice.
"Have you ever thought about your first kiss?" Her left hand and arm worked for a support for her chin and she turned her head slightly to face her friend. "You know, who you want it to be with or how? Maybe even where?"
"I don't know, I never thought about it." He shrugged and looked at her. "Why are you talking about this now?"
"I don't know, I was just curious I guess. I mean, this was bound to happen sometime soon."
"Probably, yeah. Wait a minute… you already had your first kiss?"
Sora was expecting this question, but was caught off guard anyway. She could feel her cheeks burning as her face turned bright red and she knew she couldn't deny it. Her reaction somehow made Yamato feel angry and jealous.
"I might have yesterday."
"Well, how was it? Was it good? Who did you kiss? I don't remember seeing you crushing anyone."
"It was weird I think. But it was good, yeah. You're right, I'm not crushing anyone. I was just trying to help a friend out. He also helped me, so… it's a win-win situation."
"That sounds like something Mimi would do. I never thought of you doing such thing."
"People surprise you, right? "
"That's true."
"So, have you had your first kiss?"
"No, some sassy fans tried to kiss me but I just pulled away. I don't want my first kiss to be like this. I want it to be meaningful. It has to be with someone I like a lot."
Sora looked at him and something about the way he said it made her jealous of the girl he chose to be his first kiss. Deep down she was hoping it was her, but she knew he would never look at her the way she does him.
"Anyway, you never told me who it was."
"I'm not allowed to reveal it, you know this person and he would feel embarrassed by all teasing you could possibly do. I can't even imagine how it's gonna be if Taichi finds out."
"So Koushiro, huh?"
"What?!"
"You pretty much gave it away. You should learn to be more discreet about it. I can't believe Koushiro was the first guy you kissed!"
"What's wrong with that?" She asked annoyed. "He's a good guy! So what if he's shy and introvert? You're introvert yourself. You just got better because of the Teenage Wolves."
"Sora and Yamato, you will be in detention for disturbing the class."
"But I have tennis class later." Sora protested. "I can't miss it."
"And I need to practice with my band."
"You should have thought about that before talking so loud in my class."
The two friends sighed and leaned back in their chairs.
The guardians of Love and Friendship were told they had to work in the library for the detention. Both of them protested about it but the teacher didn't take it easy on them. Instead, he gave them more activities than he planned to because of that.
"This is so unfair. I should be practicing for Wimbledon and I'm stuck here."
"Hey, don't think you're the only one who'd rather be somewhere else. I had to cancel the rehearsal with the Wolves."
"Why would you have to complain about my first kiss?"
"I wasn't complaining about it." Yamato retorted.
"You were making fun of it!" Sora yelled. "You made it seem like it was awful for me to kiss Koushiro!"
"Excuse me if I find it odd. This isn't like you at all."
"I said I was helping him out! He was also helping me. I don't get why you are making such a big deal of this. It's not like me and him have romantic feelings for each other."
"Still, you two are Destined Children. How are we supposed to deal with this now?"
"What the hell?! No one needs to know. I don't even know why I told you in the first place." She sighed frustrated and walked away from him.
"Hey, I'm sorry." He followed her and grabbed her arm, twisting her around.
"You know, you should stop acting like such a jerk." She pulled her arm away from his touch. "This is the side effect of having a rock band. You become selfish and have a big ego."
"Now you're offending me."
"Oh so now you're offended?" Sora put her hands on her hips with irony. "You didn't seem to mind when you bad mouthed me kissing Koushiro."
"I know, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done that."
"Let's just finish what we have to do. The sooner we're done, the sooner we leave. Hopefully we can make it to the meeting with the others."
"Right."
"And even if he and I were to be a couple, how does it concern you? As far as I know we're both single and can date whoever we want to."
"I know. I didn't expect you to talk to me about this, that's all."
"You're just jealous that I got to kiss before you did."
"Oh now I'll just have to grab the first girl I see and kiss her."
"So go ahead, do it." Sora dared. "Go kiss the first girl you see. You're such a liar!"
"How am I a liar?"
"You told me before you were waiting for the right person and now you just want to get your first kiss as soon as possible?"
"Who said that girl couldn't be a potential love interest?"
"Oh please!" She mocked. "You are just afraid you might lose to Taichi. Hell, I bet even Takeru will kiss for the first time before you do."
"What is that supposed to mean? I believe you wanted to drop this subject, so why do you keep bringing it up?"
"It's fun to see you having no reaction." She laughed.
"What are you talking about?" Yamato tried to sound serious, but couldn't stop laughing.
"I don't believe you will go to the first girl you see and kiss her without asking. That's something Taichi would do. You don't have the guts."
"I totally have the guts! Wanna dare?"
"I don't know… what would I get if I won?"
"I'll tell you what. Whoever loses buys the other one a present."
"That sounds great! It's a deal."
"Okay, nice."
"We should really get back to work now."
"Sure."
Sora went to rearrange the upper part of a shelf. A thud noise could be heard in the room, followed by a soft scream. Yamato rushed to see what happened.
"Sora, are you okay?"
"I don't think so." She had her hand over her ankle, squeezing it lightly. "I think my ankle is swollen."
"Let me take a look." He knelt down beside her and touched her injured ankle. "Does it hurt?"
"A little bit." She made a face when he grabbed it a little harder.
"We should go the nursing room."
"I'm alright, Yamato." She made an attempt to stand up but fell down again.
"Yeah, I can see that."
"We need to finish our work here."
"You won't be able to do anything like this."
"I'll get the teacher here then."
"No, Yamato." Sora grabbed his hand. "Please, stay here with me."
"Okay." He sat down beside her.
His hand accidentally brushed hers when he used it as a support to sit down. Sora blushed a little with that gesture, even if he didn't mean to.
"Were you serious about the bet?"
"Why not?" He looked at her. "I would have to have my first kiss sometime anyway."
"But you said you were going to wait for someone worthy it. I found it really sweet and cute. Not many guys are willing to wait."
"Well, I'm not everyone I guess."
"I accept my loss. What do you want as a present?"
'You don't have to do this, Sora. We can just cancel the bet."
"No." She said firmly. "It's only fair I follow through with it."
"I wouldn't be able to do it myself, so there you go."
"I appreciate you're trying to make me feel better, but let me do this." She grabbed his hand and laced her fingers with his own.
"Alright, if you say so."
"Thank you."
"You know what?"
"What?"
"If I actually followed through with our dare, the first girl I would see is you."
"That obviously wouldn't count. Right?"
"Would that be such an awful thing to do?"
"I don't know."
The blonde looked intently into his best friend's eyes before leaning over. Sora instinctively closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
Feedback is always appreciated. See you next month!
