Hey guys! Sorry for the wait! Here's an extra long chapter for you guys!
"This young lady nursed you back to health, Percy. Annabeth, my dear, why don't you go check on Percy's bunk? We'll be putting him in cabin eleven for now."
Annabeth said, "Sure, Chiron."
I was sitting playing pinochle with Chiron and Mr. D.
I gleefully stared as they took each other in.
Percy's eyes lit up, thinking about how she must be impressed.
"You drool when you sleep." She declared before running off.
PERCABETH!!!!
Percy sat down at the table with us.
I had spent the days that Percy had been unconscious trying to get to know people, but I had actively been avoiding the Hermes cabin. For obvious reasons.
"Percy, this is Leah." Chiron introduced me.
"Sup." I said to him.
"Hi…" He said back.
He seemed wary of me. So he had good instincts. I already knew that, of course.
I studied him. This is the boy that would fall into Tartarus in five years. He, of course, was older than me by a month, but because I knew what would happen to him, he seemed a lot younger. Almost like a child.
Then I realized I was staring. He looked a little nervous, and everyone else had stopped talking.
I got up. "I'm sorry, but I have to go. " I decided to finally head to the Hermes cabin. I also was trying to avoid being alone with Mr. D. While he might not notice I'm from the future, I didn't want to risk it.
I got to the Hermès cabin and I peeked my head in.
I looked at the sheer amount of people in this cabin. At least it would get better later.
Then I spotted him. Luke Castellan. The scar down his face marring his otherwise handsome features. He was laughing and joking with someone.
I lost my nerve. I couldn't face him.
I ducked out before anyone could talk to me. To say I was upset was a bit of an understatement. People kept saying that Luke was a hero. But he wasn't. A last ditch effort to do the right thing does not cancel out all the pain and misery and death that he caused.
And now that he was real and I could interact with him, my feeling intensified. I hated him.
I spotted Hestia. She was alone. I went over and sat down. "I could expose him right now. I could save everyone who dies with a few simple words. I don't get it."
Hestia smiled, "That just means you have a good heart. But think of it this way, if Fate is changed as drastically as it would, think of it as the fates' string getting tangled up, and when strings are tangled so badly that there is no hope of it ever being unknotted, what would you do?"
"I would cut it." I said, astonished, "so what you're saying is that if we mess up fate, it could cause more deaths than otherwise intended?"
Hestia tilted her head, "It would tangle together the string of every person's life who is touched by these experiences. So not only would more people die, it might cause genocide."
"Might?"
"Well, there's no precedence, but that is the most likely outcome."
I was silent for a second. "Okay."
"I wouldn't have asked you to do this if I wasn't sure you could handle it."
It was as if Hestia could somehow sense my fears and anxieties.
"But what if you were wrong?"
Hestia shrugged. "Then I was wrong. I believe you can do it, but you'll never be able to if you don't believe it yourself."
That was somehow comforting.
I stood up, thanked her for her time, and walked off just in time to see a bunch of girls get powerhosed out of the bathroom.
I must have been talking to Hestia longer than I'd thought.
Clairesse LaRue stood up, sopping wet, and glared at Percy.
I walked over there, just to make sure things would happen the way they were supposed to.
"You are dead, new boy. You are totally dead."
Percy just stood there. Looking blank. He even looked a little scared.
I waited for the Iconic line, Want to gargle more toilet water, Claresse? Close your mouth.
But it wasn't happening.
I flashed back to what Hestia said, not only would more people die, it might cause genocide.
I had to do something. I caught Percy's eye. He looked at me weird. I gestured to a smirking Clarisse. Say something. I mouthed.
Clarisse was fuming. The moment Percy opened his mouth she sneered. "Got something to say, Punk?"
Percy almost shied away, but instead seemed to steel himself, "Want to gargle more toilet water, Claresse? Close your mouth." He looked legitimately terrifying. I was really glad this anger wasn't directed towards me.
"You little--!" Clarisse screamed. She had to be held back by her cabin mates. They dragged her away, kicking and screaming.
Percy was staring at Annabeth. She was staring at him.
"What are you thinking?" Percy asked.
"I'm thinking," Annabeth paused for dramatic effect, "That I want you and Leah on my team for Capture the Flag."
And me? That's when I remembered it was in camp rules for me to also participate. Dang, I wanted to learn how to use weapons first. "I would prioritize having Percy on your team, if I were you."
"Ahah!" Annabeth pointed at me, "But what if that's exactly what you want me to think? What if, having Percy and not you on my team causes me to lose? But also what if having you, but not Percy on my team causes me to lose? Or--!"
"Cool it, Wise Girl." I said, I felt a thrill as I said it, "Your plan will work."
Annabeth paused, "It will?"
"Of course, Athena always has a plan, am I right?"
Annabeth nodded.
"As you can see, I'm not necessary to win the game. And I'm not going to sell your secrets to the other team because I want you guys to win."
"Excuse me," Percy cut in, "What the heck are you guys talking about?"
Poor Percy, always left in the dark and people thinking he's stupid because of it.
I decided to humor him, "The strategy for the game. Plan's on a need to know, and no offense, but you don't need to know."
Percy rolled his eyes like the sassy demigod he is, "I know that, but how would you know what Annabeth is thinking? Can you read minds?" His eyes widened, "Can you read mine?"
Actually… I could. Sometimes. When the scripted part of the book was happening, then I did know what he was thinking about. At other points in time, I could only guess. "No. I'm a child of Apollo." I would never get tired of saying that, "I have a rare gift where I can see the future."
"Does that mean you know if I actually do it? Do I save her?"
Aww! He must be thinking about Sally! I couldn't wait to meet her! "I'm sorry," I said, "I don't know that. My knowledge of the future is a bit… spotty."
I thought that he could tell I was lying, but he didn't say anything about that. "How about my godly parent? do you know that?"
I almost gave it away.
"P--" I started, but quickly recovered, "Ercy. If I did know that, I wouldn't be allowed to tell you. Even telling Annabeth what to do during the Capture the Flag was a bit risky."
"Oh." He looked disappointed, "Why?"
This time Annabeth intervened, "Knowledge of the future is a delicate thing. You can't give too much away or you'll alter the future permanently. The gods don't like when you do that, so they might lock her up somewhere, or even kill her."
I swallowed nervously, "Nicely said."
"Oh," Percy seemed disappointed, then seemed to have another question for me, "So why did you want me to say something?"
I shrugged, "Maybe I thought that the idea of you pissing off one of the most proficient fighters in camp amused me."
I smiled at his frustrated expression. "Seriously?"
I laughed, "Nah, there was a reason. You just don't get to know that. Now," I turned to Annabeth, "Finish your tour."
And with that I walked off. All this walking around kinda showed me how out of shape I was.
I decided it was time for me to join my 'siblings' in playing basketball.
Long story short, they're nice, and I suck at basketball. Something about it being a competitive sport? And standing there for several minutes lining up shots is a bad way to play? Ridiculous.
I walked away from them after a bit. I wasn't quite sure what to do. There was quite a bit of down time until the next plot point of the book happened. So, Capture the Flag was on Friday?
I sighed and turned to walk back towards the other Apollo children. That's how much time I would have to prepare.
Leave a review to tell me how I did!
