Wayne Cohen-Chang was a hero at William McKinley High School. He was captain of their martial arts team and he was a national champion. He was the student council president. He was leader of the debate team and captain of the fencing team. But when he decided to join the Glee club the rumor mill started running crazy. Why would someone at the top of the food chain at McKinley decide to join the club that hadn't won anything since the 70's or 80's?
The answer was simple. His little sister wanted to join and he was not gonna let anyone treat his little sister badly. She was already safe due to him being so popular but Wayne wanted to make sure all those kids were safe. He didn't understand why everyone treated them so badly. There was nothing wrong with glee club. He hadn't joined himself because he was self conscious about his voice. But now that there seemed to be a new choir leader that wanted anyone who auditioned to join and his sister was going to join… well why not try it out? His little sister was a freshman and he was a junior by now and she had been bugging him about his singing since they were really little. Wayne was actually thinking of telling their friend Mike Chang that he should try out because he would finally be able to just dance amongst people that would appreciate it. But he decided against it. Mike dancing was his secret to tell and not Wayne's.
Speaking of the devil. Mike waved at him before hurrying off with his friends to football practice. Wayne himself walked up to the audition list. He saw five names there. Rachel Berry, the diva-wannabe that thought she had the greatest voice in the world. Wayne agreed that she was good but that she needed to tone down the diva act and just be more humble towards people. And she really should stop dressing like an old lady, she was pretty so she should show it.
Then there was Mercedes Jones another wannabe diva. She had a large personality, just like Rachel and a big voice to go to it. But she could also favor from mellowing out a little and let other people through.
Artie Abrams. Wayne knew him very well because Artie was a friend of Wayne's sister Tina and he was a member of the AV-club that Wayne time and time again asked for advice about digital tools during student council meetings. He also asked them for lessons and Artie gladly helped him. Artie could really sing and Wayne had told him so time and time again.
Then there was his sister of course. His little sister was a big big star in his eyes. She was proud of being herself and after some years of fake stuttering because of her insecurities she had stopped when she entered high school and saw that it was okay to be who you were, even at this place. He guardian angel would always see to that. Wayne smiled and looked at the last name.
Kurt Hummel. Oh right he was the in-the-closet boy who all knew he was gay but still had to confess it to himself and the world. There was something about the boy that made Wayne's skin crawl. It wasn't that he was gay, Wayne had no problem with that it was something else. He was a wannabe diva as well and very selfish. But Wayne would give him a chance if he could.
Now Wayne hadn't always lived in Lima. He and his mom had lived in another town for his first two years of life until his mother met Wayne's stepdad Aaron Chang. Aaron lived in Lima and Rochelle and Wayne moved with him. Soon Tina was born and the family of three grow to a family of four. Now Wayne did never call his stepdad by that title. He called him dad and father because he had never known any other person to be his father.
Now Wayne was a very intelligent and talented young man so when it was time to start high school he got an offer from the prestige Dalton Academy to go there with a full scholarship. But he declined. He wanted to be with his little sister. He had to protect her from boys after all. Mike and Artie didn't count because they were her friends and if one of them became something more later he would let them… just kill them if either of them ever hurt his baby sister. But it was also a heavy decision to decide to not to go. Because Wayne had been told about how amazing Dalton was by his and Tina's big brother from another mother, Jerry Jonston.
They had met the older boy at Asian Camp and he looked so much like Wayne that it was spooky. Jerry had taken them and Mike under his wing at camp and had told them everything about Dalton when he himself started there. He told them about all the interesting people in the glee club called the Warblers and Wayne guessed that's where Tina's interest and hopes about glee club came from. She was sure she'd meet people like the Dalton Warblers there. Wayne knew that the people on that list was far from it so he was going to help his little sister get a little of it at least. He wrote his name… only to realize that the auditions had already been held.
"Shoot", he said and hurried towards the choir room.
"Hi Wayne", three Cheerios said as he walked by.
"Hi Brittany, good morning Quinn, buenos dias Santana", Wayne said as he hurried past them.
"Whoa dude slow down", a few football players said as he ran between them.
"Sorry Puckerman no time", Wayne said.
"Whoa hold on a second", a big football player said and grabbed Wayne's shoulder, pulling him back. "Where's the fire dude?"
"I am late for an audition", Wayne said. "So please let me go Dave."
"So it's true?" Karofsky asked. "The most popular guy at school is going to join the loser club?"
"How bad can it be?" Wayne asked. "Besides if I wanted to join the loser club I'd join the football team, when did you guys win a match?"
"Why you little", Dave began.
"Uh uh Karofsky", Wayne said. "Remember what happened last time Dave. Yeah I see your hand remember." Dave Karofsky was rubbing his ass. "Good day gentlemen." Wayne whistled as he started walking down the hallway. He nodded at Finn Hudson as he walked past him. Soon he reached the choir room and saw his sister and the others that had signed up for auditions. They were rehearsing some strange dance routine for Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat. Wayne grimaced. He was the first to admit that he wasn't the worlds' best dancer but even he could see how utterly ridiculous that routine was. He cleared his throat and stepped into the room.
"Um excuse me this is a private rehearsal", Rachel said. "And I can't see a reason for the student council president to be here."
"Shut up Rachel", Tina said and walked up to Wayne and gave him a hug. "I thought you'd changed your mind."
"Sorry Tee I got the time mixed up so I missed auditions", Wayne replied.
"Wait, wait", Mercedes said. "His majesty, the WMHS King himself wants to join Glee Club? Is this a joke?"
"No joke Mercedes", Wayne said and turned to Mr. Schuester. "I'm here to audition for glee."
"That's great", Schue said and smiled. "Well we'll have a seat and listen to you then." The New Directions and Schue sat down while Wayne took the floor. He sighed, closed his eyes and then opened them again. He started singing.
Why are there so many songs about rainbows
And what's on the other side
Rainbows are visions
But only illusions
And rainbows have nothing to hide
So we've been told
And some choose to believe it
I know they're wrong, wait and see
Some day we'll find it
The rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers, and me
Who said that every wish
Would be heard and answered
When wished on the morning star
Somebody thought of that
And someone believed it
And look what it's done so far
What's so amazing
That keeps us stargazing
And what do we think we might see
Someday we'll find it
The rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers, and me
All of us under its spell, we know that it's probably magic
Have you been half asleep?
And have you heard voices?
I've heard them calling my name
Is this the sweet sound
That called the young sailors?
The voice might be one in the same
I've heard it too many times to ignore it
It's something that I'm supposed to be
Someday we'll find it
The rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me
When he finished singing he noticed that there was a crowd outside the door so he chuckled. Tina was squealing happily and clapping her hands for her brother. Artie was grinning. Rachel looked as if she wanted to eat him. Mercedes looked impressed. Kurt as well looked as if he wanted to swallow Wayne whole and Mr. Schue looked as if Christmas had come early. Wayne grinned and took that as a sign and sat down beside Tina. He looked out the door and saw a smiling crowd there. Maybe this would be good for all of them and the school.
