"You are Kenya, right?" Nurse Joy asked.
Andrew had just trudged off to his new room. He was exhausted. He'd just returned from Mistralton City. Kenya lingered by his door for a while before giving up and heading downstairs. She stared at Nurse Joy, blank-faced.
Nurse Joy raised her eyebrows.
"Did you say something?" Kenya asked.
"You're Kenya, right?" Nurse Joy said. Kenya nodded slowly. "I believe I have a letter for you." Kenya stood by as the woman searched around through some files. "It arrived a few weeks ago when your group first arrived in Driftveil."
"That long?"
Nurse Joy procured an envelope and offered it to Kenya. She immediately recognized the handwriting.
"Thanks, I guess."
Druddigon's roar seemed to shake the earth. It straightened up, raising its head to the sky.
"Get it!" Kenya ordered. Druddigon lunged, slashing its claws. Musharna spun to the side, narrowly avoiding Druddigon's attack. Druddigon roared and chased Musharna, swinging its claws wildly.
Musharna was panicking. The two of them circled the battlefield. Druddigon quickly closing the distance between them.
I took a breath.
"Musharna, Zen Headbutt." Musharna paused, turning to meet Druddigon's charge. Musharna charged, body glowing with energy.
Musharna slammed into Druddigon's chest, knocking it back a few steps. Druddigon roared, slamming Musharna into the ground. Musharna was knocked out. I returned Musharna and sighed.
Druddigon raged around the battlefield. Kenya ran over, feeding it berries. I watched her for a minute. Druddigon sat down, slowly relaxing. Kenya turned to me, frowning.
I started for them.
"What's wrong with you?" I asked. Kenya patted Druddigon on the arm before meeting my advance.
"You threw the fight," Kenya remarked. I was taken aback.
"What?" She folded her arms.
"You heard me," She gave me a long look.
"I didn't throw the fight," I insisted. "You won."
"Then why'd you have Musharna use Zen headbutt?" Kenya asked. "If Musharna kept dodging, Druddigon wouldn't have lasted much longer." Her eyes narrowed.
"Well, I didn't know that," I said. Kenya sat down on the grass with a grunt. She ran a hand through her hair, looking down at the ground. Suddenly, I was reminded of Cheren.
"We should have a rematch," Kenya said. I scoffed. I sat down on the grass, letting my eyes travel to the cloudy sky.
"It's been a bit, hasn't it?" I asked.
"What's that?" Kenya asked.
"Ever since they got me," I watched the clouds slowly drift around. "I feel like I haven't been able to… I don't know." I hesitated for a moment. "I feel like its not the same anymore."
"What are you talking about?" Kenya asked.
"Us." I met her eyes. She blinked. A smirk formed on her face. "I'm not talking about the so-called crush," I corrected. She snickered. "We're still sticking together, but are we still friends?" Kenya's face went blank.
"Of course we're friends," she said quietly." Why wouldn't we be?"
"What's been bothering you?" I asked. "Ever since I got back, I could tell something was off. It's not some dumb crush either." She stared at me, unmoving.
"I don't know what I'm going to do," She said slowly.
"About what?"
"Anything." She crossed her arms. "I'm not smart enough to be some kind of professor. I guess I'm not good enough to battle. Can't even think for myself." She fished a piece of paper out of her pocket. She offered it to me, turning away.
I hesitantly took the paper, watching her face.
"What is this?"
"I got it a few weeks ago. When we were in Driftveil city. Well, it was late. I was supposed to get it before the Nimbasa tournament." I looked the letter over.
Kenya sat down at a table, unceremoniously ripping the envelope open. She quickly scanned it, unsure what to expect.
Kenya. I hope this letter finds you in decent health.
I heard there will be a tournament in Nimbasa city a few weeks from now. I've decided that I want you to compete. This will serve as a challenge for you. I want to see how well you can use Druddigon in battle. If you win the tournament, you will receive Alder's appraisal. This will be an honor. It will open doors for you. This is a grand opportunity.
Don't miss your chance.
With love, Lenora.
P.S. If you're lucky, your friends won't compete. If they do, you'll lose.
Kenya silently folded up the letter.
I folded up the letter.
"Who cares about that?" I said. "You already battled in the tournament." Kenya laughed.
"I lost!" She shouted. "I lost in front of everyone!" She threw up her hands.
"I lost too," I said. "So did Bianca."
"But you guys don't…" She trailed off and lowered her head. "I missed my chance." She went silent for a moment. "I missed my chance." She snatched the letter from me and got up.
I remembered my battle with Bianca, near Nacrene City.
"I know it doesn't matter!" She jumped to her feet. "I just… forget it. I'll see you later."
I hesitated.
"It's getting chilly," Kenya commented. I sighed.
"I'm sorry." She looked down at me.
"For what?"
"I didn't know the tournament meant that much to you." I should've known. I remembered how stressed she got about her battle with Clay. How upset she was after she lost to Nathan.
Kenya perked up, noticing Bianca and Mary approaching. Bianca was waving. Mary had a smile on her face.
"Come on," She said, returning Druddigon. I got up.
"Hey, Kenya. Listen." She paused, meeting my eyes. "You won, I didn't throw the battle." She didn't seem convinced, she just nodded.
I knew it wasn't enough. I should've said something better, to reassure her somehow. Nothing came to mind.
