Trunks found himself in the kitchen grabbing breakfast before he headed to school. The kitchen was definitely one of his favorite places to be. Maybe it had something to do with his Sayain appetite. It was unusual for him to be up and ready for school on his own without the sound of his parents annoyed voices ringing as alarms do. But after his mom's recent achievement he felt inspired and wanted to make her proud. Sure, he earned some high academic grades but he knew he could do better with his morning routine. He could show some responsibility and get up and ready for school on his own. He would do that starting today.
Baby steps.
So… on this particular morning when his alarm clock jolted him out of his sleep, he woke up and got out of bed. He ignored urges to turn around and go to sleep. He ignored his thoughts reminding him that he could break his alarm clock if he wanted to.
Baby steps.
He was proud of himself. He was sure his parents would be proud too, speaking of his mom and dad, it was weird for them to be sleeping still. That "certain situations" fiasco at his mom's surprise celebratory dinner was weird too but hey that was their marriage issues. Trunks decided to stay out of it.
As if on cue, both of his parents walked into the kitchen together.
'Also, weird.' Trunks thought to himself.
"Morning Hun." Bulma greeted Trunks while opening the refrigerator to grab some orange juice.
Vegeta grabbed two glasses from the cabinet but did not greet his son.
Trunks didn't expect him to. His father wasn't the greeting type.
"Morning Mom and Dad" Trunks greeted his parents before starting to clear his plate of his breakfast.
Trunks started to clean and wash his dish. His mom could be messy at times but she had a strict "everyone cleans their own dishes" rule. His dad was an exception of course.
"Well look at this, I'm up before you two, dressed on my own, about to head out to school." Trunks continued in a sing song voice. His father was an early bird and his mother hardly ever slept in, he didn't want to imagine what kept them both so occupied this morning that they both slept in, but he was going to milk this moment for all it was worth.
The Sayain Prince responded first. "If you're getting up on your own now son, you can get up earlier to join me in the gravity room before school, we can add another training session to your day, give you something good to sing about."
Trunks stomach started to sink. Sure, he loved to train but not before school. Plus, who said he was committing to waking up on time every day.
Baby steps for Kami's sake!
He looked at his mom from across the island in the kitchen and silently mouthed the words "save me."
"Don't listen to your father." Bulma started while pouring the orange juice in the glasses provided to her by Vegeta. "He knows we agreed that you only train after school."
Trunks signed in relief. He didn't mind training after school with his dad but the thought of adding an early training session to his day made him want to throw up his breakfast. And he really enjoyed his breakfast.
"Oh yea, I can definitely stick to my afternoon training schedule Dad." Trunks said while shyly smiling at his father. He never wanted to be out of the house and at school as much as he wanted to in this very moment.
He grabbed his face mask and bookbag and started to head out before he was interrupted by his mom.
"Wait, Trunks, I have a question for you, how would you feel about having a little brother or sister?"
Literal baby steps! Trunks thought. He could see it now. He almost laughed out loud. This was a very unusual morning.
"That would be cool, Dad would have another child to train." Trunks responded.
"Really, is that all you could think of?" Bulma asked, slightly annoyed.
The Sayain Prince was noticeably quiet. He eyes focused on his wife and if looks could kill…
"Dad's super focused on training and mom you're super focused on science. At least Goten gets a balance, Aunt Chi is focused on academics and Uncle Goku is super laid back. I want a balance too; I just want to be a teen…"
"and focus on girls perhaps?" Bulma interrupted with a smirk.
Trunks blushed before explaining himself further, "I'm just saying, I wouldn't mind a little brother to share some of this pressure. It ain't easy being the son of Bulma and Vegeta, so I am all for a sibling." Trunks attempted to get out of dodge but he was not quick enough for his father.
"See you in the gravity room as soon as you get home from school." Vegeta said before Trunks could leave.
"Yes sir." was Trunks reply. He knew his father would make him pay for his statements later on today in their training session. He sighed, closed the door behind him, and headed off to school.
Bulma turned to face her husband while finishing her orange juice, "He has a point there, you don't have to be so hard on him."
Vegeta shrugged, "You do know he mentioned you being hard on him as well." He finished his orange juice in one swig. He felt off having missed his training session this morning. A certain wife of his had occupied him in the bed last night and this morning making it nearly impossible for him to follow his morning routine. He wasn't complaining about that though, but this conversation with Trunks, that pissed him off.
"So, this is what we have come to, we're now involving Trunks." Vegeta shifted the conversation and asked his wife.
"I didn't plan to, but I'm curious, we're a family and I just wanted to know his thoughts."
"You could have asked him what he thought about the possibility of you dying. Better yet, you should have asked him to choose between you and a new sibling because that is what this will all boil down to if we continue to entertain this idea of you breaking your promise and carrying this pregnancy to term."
Bulma was tired of the same argument.
"I'm going to get ready for work." She announced before heading back up to the bedroom leaving Vegeta in the kitchen alone.
"Woman, we aren't done here." Vegeta yelled after her.
"Well, I am."
He could argue with himself for all she cared.
Bulma met with her senior leadership team when she arrived at the office. Pensil was still out on vacation.
Book reported on behalf of Pensil. The vaccine rollout was successful. The vaccines supply was higher than demand at the moment. Some people were hesitant about the vaccine due to many factors including a distrust of the government. Many global leaders were televised getting the Capsule Corp Covid-19 vaccine. Bulma hoped this would encourage the world to follow suit and get the vaccine themselves.
Another senior leadership team member, Calcula, reported on the marketing plan to increase the world's trust in the vaccine. One of the strategies included televising Dr. Brief himself receiving the vaccine.
After the meeting ended, Bulma returned to her office. Before she could turn on her computer, there was a knock at the door.
"Come in" Bulma said.
She really needed an executive assistant to screen these visitors but generally practiced an open-door policy.
It was Book who entered. Bulma relaxed, Book was one of her favorite team members. Book immediately took off her face mask when she entered Bulma's office.
"I just need to breathe for a bit boss." She said before she updating Bulma on Pensil's quarantine status.
"His last day of quarantine is today and he'll be back tomorrow." Book said.
Bulma didn't have to guess who Book was referring to. She really wondered about them two.
"Thanks for letting me know Book, you can put your mask back on."
Book put her mask on.
"It wasn't necessary to come here to tell me that, I'm sure HR would have sent me an email or something.
"I know, I just wanted to let you know." Book responded.
It was then that Bulma noticed a diamond ring on Book's finger.
"Are you married Book?!" she excitedly asked.
Book squealed "yes!" while handing Bulma a souvenir from her vacation to Lake Toya.
"Wow, who is the lucky guy?" Bulma as she thanked Book for the souvenir. She had some thoughts. Two employees taking vacation around the same time to the same place. It was just a matter of time before her thoughts were confirmed.
"You'll meet him as my husband soon!" was all Book said before heading out of the office.
Bulma shrugged her shoulders and returned to her work.
Pensil returned to the office the next day with a wedding band on his finger.
Bulma was out sick.
Pensil apologized to the executive team for missing the launch of the vaccine. He was Bulma's second in command for a reason. He continued strategizing for continued global vaccine rollout with the executive team in Bulma's absence.
The cough came suddenly.
Bulma woke up in the middle night gasping for air.
That one cough quickly turned into several uncontrollable coughs. She could feel Vegeta rustling out of the bed to grab her some water. That usual helped humans when they coughed. Bulma tried to drink the water but she felt such a pressure in her chest and so much pain. The coughing continued. Trunks entered the room next.
"What's going on with mom?" she heard him ask with fear in his voice.
Bulma started gasping for air, it was clear to Vegeta that she was having trouble breathing. Water wouldn't help, she needed immediate medical attention.
Vegeta didn't respond to his son. He sprang into action, quickly dressing Bulma while she continued to cough. He could tell something was wrong. He arrived at the West City Hospital in record time. Bulma continued to cough.
The emergency room doctors immediately identified that cough. They also identified the Capsule Corp CEO in the muscled arms of her mysterious spike haired husband. Bulma was clothed but her husband arrived to the hospital in just his briefs. There was no time to chat though, a gurney was quickly brought out as Bulma's lips started to turn blue and she stopped breathing.
"Code Blue!" The emergency room doctor yelled out. A host of nurses and hospital staff arrived and resuscitated Bulma. Bulma was immediately transferred to the Intensive Care Unit where was attached to a ventilator to stabilize her breathing.
Vegeta remained frozen in time. He didn't even notice Trunks as he arrived and led his Dad to the waiting area.
The wait seemed like forever.
The two Sayains sat in silence. They were lost in their own thoughts, they had their own wonderings, worries, anxieties, things they could not dare to say a loud. They loved the woman in the intensive care unit, a wife, and a mother, she was their literal heart, she was their heart outside of their body.
Father and son remained in silence when the assigned doctor arrived and confirmed their worse suspicions.
Bulma was diagnosed with COVID-19.
Bulma had to remain in the Intensive Care Unit.
Bulma was not allowed visitors due to her health condition.
This could not be happening.
The doctor asked if there were any health conditions that the team should be made aware of as they treat Bulma.
Vegeta almost could not find the words to speak. This seemed like a shock, like this was a dream. He was drinking orange juice with his wife just the other day and now she was in the hospital with this blasted human disease that was killing people. Would this disease kill his wife?
Trunk interrupted his father's thoughts when he responded to the doctor.
"She's pregnant."
Trunks must have sensed the KI coming from his mother.
Vegeta was grateful for his son in that moment, his son was able to find the words that he could not speak.
'We will do all we can for Bulma and for her child." The doctor said before leaving father and son alone once again, alone in their thoughts, alone in their wonderings, alone with things they could not dare say aloud.
They sat there until hospital staff kindly asked them to leave. Due to COVID-19 the number of hospital visitors were being restricted. The father and son pair slowly flew back home. They flew to a home that would be empty, a home that would be silent, as they were a family that felt lost, that felt grief from being home without Bulma.
Home is wherever the heart, their heart is, Bulma, was in the hospital. Their home was the hospital but there was no way for them to stay there without causing a scene or embarrassment to the family and to Capsule Corp.
Two Sayains, father and son, slowly flew home, they slowly flew home while feeling uncertain of the future , uncertain of what would happen to their heart that they left behind at West City hospital, uncertain of what future awaited for their family but definitely certain that they would get through it together.
