I could be cold
I could be ruthless
You know I could be just like you

I could be weak
I could be senseless
You know I could be just like you

The original Vampire had been looking at Jack and Jill but upon Kenzie's gasp, he turned his head to look at her and dropped the rope in shock. Kenzie screamed as she was dropped several feet before she was jerked to a stop again and pulled out of the well, Elijah reaching out a hand to help her. She refused to let go of the rope as she stared at him.

"I will not harm you." He promised.

Kenzie stared at him, glancing at Jack who was leaning over Jill, completely ignoring her and she knew she had no choice but to accept Elijah's help if she wanted out of the well. With a sigh she reached out and took his hand and in the blink of an eye, he had let go of the rope but had his arms wrapped firmly around her , putting her safely on the ground.

"How?" He asked, his arms still wrapped firmly around her.

She struggled to get away and when he released her, she slapped him across the face. "That was for killing me, you fucking asshole."

He didn't even flinch but an eyebrow did raise at her language.

"You killed her?" Jack asked, moving so he was suddenly in between them.

"Don't." Kenzie warned him, tugging on his arm. "He'll kill you in a heartbeat."

"Who is he?"

"I'm surprised you don't know." Kenzie replied, stepping up beside him. "This is Elijah, one of the Originals."

Jack looked surprised as he stepped back. "Katherine spoke of you."

"I'm sure she has." Elijah said with a small strained smile.

Jack turned to look at Kenzie. "You told me he was… daggered… but you did not mention that he killed you."

Kenzie scowled. "What did you think was wrong with me when you picked me up from my front porch and deposited me on my couch."

"You were breathing, I was more worried about finding what I had to before you woke up."

"Yes, he killed me, I have this fancy ring that everyone thought only the Gilbert's had and voila, I'm alive."

"Cecilia's ring?" Jack asked in confusion. "Our rings were our wedding rings, gifted to us by the Gilbert's as a wedding present. When they learned Jill was with child, Jonathon gifted us another for her."

"They must have really liked you then because here I am." Kenzie exclaimed, gesturing to herself before looking at Elijah. "And that's how I'm here."

He nodded. "I am sorry for that Mackenzie."

"Whatever." She mumbled, looking around for a sharp rock. She found one and knelt beside Jill.

"What are you doing?" Elijah asked.

"I don't even know." She muttered. "She doesn't deserve this after the hell she put me through."

"I'd like to think Jill was bluffing that she would never hurt you or your father"

Kenzie looked up at Jack with a scowl. "Don't defend her."

"You have to understand 1865 was a different time. The death rate was much higher and even before she got pregnant, Jill was sick. She got worse after the baby was born and she begged Katherine to save her because she wanted to be around for the baby. Katherine obliged and Jill feels she owes her a great debt."

"That still shouldn't make Jill Katherine's lapdog. Family comes first."

"It's more complicated than that. If Katherine threatened to hurt me or you and your father, her hold would be that much stronger."

Kenzie glared at him, holding the rock above her wrist. "I said don't. Look, against my better judgement, I'm giving her blood, so just stop."

She let out a pained noise as she made a cut and held the blood to Jill's lips. The vampire began drinking and Kenzie watched as her vervain burns began to heal. When the little redhead tried to pull away, Jill's hands came up to grasp her arm as she greedily drank more. Kenzie began to struggle and it took Jack grabbing Jill and Elijah pulling Kenzie away to part them.

"Just get her out of here." Kenzie sighed, cradling her wrist against her chest, Elijah's arm still wrapped around her.

"But you are injured." Jack argued. "And I do not think it's wise to leave you here."

"I'm fine."

She waited until Jack had left with Jill before pulling away from Elijah. "What are you even doing here? You were supposed to be with Elena."

"Klaus attacked her aunt. She left to go help but has promised to return."

"Whatever." She muttered, turning to walk away, gritting her teeth when he followed her.

"You should get that looked at. Please, let me help."

"No. I hate you."

He gently grabbed her arm and turned her towards him, pulling out a handkerchief and pressing it to her wound. "I only want to help."

"Said the guy who killed me."

"I do regret doing that."

"But you still did. As far as I'm concerned, you got what you deserved, except you should've stayed shriveled up."

He couldn't help but give a small smile at the fire in her.

"Don't laugh at me." She hissed, pulling away from him as she began walking away again.

"Mackenzie, please wait."

She did stop, patting her pockets before remembering she had left her phone beside the well and doubled back to get it. She picked it up and moved in another direction but Elijah was in front of her, stopping her in her tracks.

"Will you please talk to me?"

"You have two minutes." She warned him.

"First, you are wet, please take my jacket." He took it off and draped it around her, Kenzie actually biting her tongue and stopping herself from saying she still had his other jacket.

"I feared you had been part of the plan to kill me and at first I thought it was you that stabbed me." He explained.

"It wasn't." She snapped. "I was outside waiting for you to return."

"I see that now. But the deal I had with Elena was no longer in place and you were the most… convenient at the time to send my message."

"Except no one knew. It took me awhile before I told anyone and let's just say that Damon would gladly torture you for days on end for killing me."

"Ah, so there is something going between you two, I suspected as much, another reason I chose you."

Kenzie turned away from him, trying not to lash out at him, lest he killed her again.

"Damon and I were not together then. That's a recent development. And why choose me because of that? Jealous?" She asked with a raised eyebrow

His lips quirked up into a small smile amused to no end by this human. "I will not deny that you completely fascinate me."

Her cheeks flushed red with anger. "Well forget it, as far as I'm concerned, you can go to hell and stay there." She stomped away from him, stopping when she saw Elena's car pulling up to the Lockwood mansion.

"You actually came back?" She asked in disbelief as the brunette exited the car, looking at Kenzie in surprise.

"What are you doing here?" Elena asked.

"Saving Jill when lo and behold My favourite vampire showed up." Came Kenzie's sarcastic reply.

"What?" the brunette was completely lost as she looked between Elijah, who had an amused smile on his face and Kenzie who was wearing Elijah's suit jacket and looked like a drowned rat.

"Nothing." Kenzie snapped. "I'm leaving."

She turned to leave but was stopped yet again by Elijah who wasn't looking at her but at Elena.

"You can't leave, Kenzie." Elena softly told her.

"Watch me." She snarled, tempting to move past Elijah.

"I'm sorry, but she is right." Elijah told her.

"If you leave, Stefan and Damon will find out where I am and they can't know right now."

"Fine, I'll keep my mouth shut." Kenzie snapped.

"Please, just stay with us." Elena pleaded.

"Or what? Elijah will snap my neck again." Kenzie looked at Elena who was staring at them in shock.

"You killed Kenzie?" She whispered in disbelief.

The redhead looked back at Elijah with a shrug. "No one but Damon knew. Oops? So fine, I'll stick around, see what all the fuss is about, yeah?" She stepped back, motioning for the other two to do what they had to and Elena led the way back into the house and into the front room, taking off her jacket as she did so.

"Kenzie, I should tell you a few things first." The brunette said, dropping her jacket on the couch. "Klaus and Elijah are brothers, and the curse is fake."

The small teen's eyebrows shot straight up. "Then what the hell have we been protecting you from all this time?"

"There is a curse." Elijah explained. "Just not that curse."

"So tell me, what is Klaus' curse?" Elena asked.

"Your brother?" Kenzie cut in. "What the actual hell?"

Another small quirk of Elijah's lips, his amusement at her clearly showing as he gestured to the couches for them to sit down. The two girls sat on opposite couches and Elijah chose to sit down beside Kenzie before he started speaking.

"My family was quite close, but Klaus and my father did not get on too well. When we became vampires, we discovered the truth. Klaus was not my father's son."

The girls exchanged a look of disbelief before turning back to Elijah, who had a pained smile on his face.

"My mother had been unfaithful many years before. This was her darkest secret. Klaus is from a different bloodline. Of course, when my father discovered this, he hunted down and he killed my mother's lover and his entire family. Not realizing, of course, that he was igniting a war between species that rages until this day."

"A war between the species?" Elena asked, confused.

Elijah nodded his assent. "The Vampires…"

"And werewolves." Kenzie finished for him with wide eyes as it began to clue in.

Elijah nodded.

"So Klaus' real father was from a werewolf bloodline?" Elena asked. "What does that make Klaus? A werewolf? Or a vampire?"

Elijah looked away from them both before speaking. "He's both."

Elena's jaw dropped and she looked to the other teen who looked just as shocked.

"A hybrid would be deadlier than any werewolf or vampire. Nature would not stand for such an imbalance of power. Therefore the witches, the servants of nature, saw to it that my brother's werewolf side would become dormant."

Elena leaned forward, completely captivated by what Elijah was saying. "That's the curse that Klaus wants to break?"

"He wants to trigger that part of him that's a werewolf. If allowed, Klaus would sire his own bloodline. He'd build his own race. Endangering not just vampires, but everyone."

"But you helped him." Elena pointed out.

"I helped him because I loved him. That's changed, now he must die."

"You can easily kill your own brother?" Kenzie asked with a raised eyebrow. "I mean I know you're all vampy and can flip a switch but family is family."

Elijah turned to stare at her and they assessed each other before he finally nodded. "I will do what has to be done, this cannot be allowed."

"Good answer." She replied.

"Does this mean I'm forgiven?"

"Ha, no." She smiled at him to show she was softening.

"We have the dagger now, we can stop him." Elena said.

"Especially since you're not using it anymore." Kenzie replied with a small snort.

"Kenz." Elena groaned, praying the redhead's mouth wouldn't screw all this up.

"It's quite alright." Elijah told her. "Mackenzie's way with words is very delightful. As for the dagger, when a werewolf is wounded by silver, it heals. An Original can't be killed by anything but white oak ash on a silver dagger. So you see the conundrum. The dagger does not work."

"What, are you saying that Klaus can't be killed?" Elena asked.

"There's one way to kill any supernatural species… at the hands of the servants of nature themselves."

"A witch if they can channel that much power, but it would kill them." Elena closed her eyes, thinking all was lost.

"The curse must be broken during the full moon." Elijah explained. "When Klaus is in transition. That's when he'll be at his most vulnerable. A witch with enough power, can kill Klaus."

"What if I told you that I knew a witch that could channel that much power?" The brunette hesitantly asked.

The vampire looked at her. "Then I should tell you there is one more thing you need to know."

"What?" Elena asked.

"When the time came to sacrifice Katerina, the witches found a way to spare the doppelganger. I was all for that but my brother did not care to save the life of a simple human." A look of pain crossed his face and Kenzie couldn't help but put a hand on his arm.

"I haven't been here for the whole story but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know you fell in love with her, huh?"

"That obvious?" he asked with a small smile.

"To me."

"Once upon a time, yes, I did have strong feelings for Katerina but my brother was not willing to spare her."

"But you found a way to ensure that she would live?" Elena asked.

"Yes, Elena, I did. But unfortunately, Katerina took matters into her own hands first. I believe you already know how that played out." He gently removed Kenzie's hand from his arm as he stood up. "Falling for her was a mistake, a common one I'm told and it's one I won't make again."

Without a backward glance, he left, leaving the two teens to stare at each other in shock and confusion.

"We should go tell the guys." Elena finally spoke as she stood up.

"That was…."

"Intense?"

Kenzie nodded as she followed Elena out to her car, surprised to see Elijah already waiting there.

"You did not think I would leave yet, did you? We have to kill Klaus." He said, holding the door open for Kenzie to get in the car.

Kenzie was quiet on the way back to the Salvatore house, not paying attention as Elena and Elijah made a new deal. When they arrived, Elijah was already at her door to help her out. She didn't say anything, but accepted the hand and Elena only raised an eyebrow at this, confused by Elijah's actions. For someone who said he wouldn't make that mistake again, he seemed pretty sweet on Kenzie.

When they entered, a loud crash came from the front room followed by growling and the sounds of struggling. Kenzie was already rushing forward into the living room, seeing Damon and Stefan fighting. She jumped over the banister and quickly inserted herself in between them, pushing back on Damon's chest as Elena yelled for them to stop. Both guys relaxed and Damon looked down at the little redhead, scowling at the jacket Elijah had given her before looking up at the original vampire.

"So now you've invited him in?"

"Elijah and I have renewed the terms of our deal."

"Really?"

Elijah nodded. "The two of you will come to no harm at my hands. I only ask for one thing in return."

"What?" Damon spat.

"An apology."

"A what?" Damon asked as if he couldn't quite believer what he was hearing. He glanced at his brother, who returned the glance before stepping forward with a sigh.

"I'm sorry for the part that I played in your death. I was protecting Elena. I will always protect Elena."

"I understand." Elijah said, accepting the apology. He turned to look at Damon who slowly shook his head.

"The sacrifice is going to happen, Damon. Bonnie will be able to kill Klaus without hurting herself and Elijah knows how to save my life. I told you I'd find another way. And I did." Elena finished with a smug smile.

"Is that true?" Damon asked in a low voice, looking at Elijah.

"It is."

Damon looked back at Elena. "And you're trusting him?"

"I am."

"You can all go to hell." He stomped out of the room.

Stefan sighed, "He's angry with me right now but he'll come around."

Kenzie rolled her eyes. "Or maybe he's pissed off because Elijah killed me, anyone think about that?"

"Wait, what?" Stefan asked, turning to look at the petite human. "He killed- wait you know about your ring now?"

"I have for a while. Right about the time Elijah snapped my pretty little neck."

"I thought we were over that." Elijah asked with an amused smile.

"I'm almost there, Damon's a whole 'nother story, good luck with that."

"To be fair, he did try and kill me first. Your death was only in retaliation."

She gave him a disgusted look "What are we, twelve?" She left the room, walking down towards Damon's room and stopping in surprise when she entered to see Damon stopped beside the bed and Andie the annoying reporter in skimpy lingerie in the door to the bathroom.

"I thought I told you to leave." Damon said with a sigh.

"You didn't compel me." She replied with a smug smile.

"No. No, no, no, no. You get the hell out of here." Kenzie grabbed a robe from nearby and threw it at the reporter. "Leave now."

"Damon wants me here."

Kenzie put her hands on her hips as she glared at Damon who grabbed Andie, looking her in the eyes.

"Leave and never come back." He hissed.

Andie grabbed the robe and left the room.

"What the hell was that?" Kenzie asked, extremely angry by then. "I go and do stuff for you and come back to find that goddamn skank that you said was used as a cover once, here, in practically nothing."

"And I want to know what the hell this is." He snarled, stepping closer to her and grabbing the front of the jacket she still wore from Elijah.

Kenzie's eyes narrowed and she could feel her cheeks heating up as her temper rose even higher. "It's a fucking jacket. How does a jacket compare to her wearing practically fuck all and looking ready to seduce you."

"She was compelled, what's your excuse?" He hissed, pulling her closer.

"Get your hands off of me." She snapped.

"Don't tell me what to do."

"I said let go." She yelled at him struggling against him.

He finally let her go and she fell back her arm hitting the corner of his fireplace mantle and causing a huge gash on her arm. She let out a cry of pain as she held her arm close to her and Damon quickly moved so he was standing in front of her, veins showing around his eyes and Kenzie wondered when the last time he fed was.

"Damon." She warned him.

He ignored her, his eyes trailing to her arm and she lifted her other hand to slap him across the face to snap him out of it. He barely flinched as he grabbed both her arms and pulled her closer, his teeth sinking into the crook of her neck.

Kenzie began screaming because unlike the other times he bit her when they were having sex and she found it pleasurable, this hurt. A lot. It felt like he was tearing her neck apart and she had barely finished her first scream, taking a breath to scream some more when Damon went flying across the room, Kenzie falling to a heap on the floor. She looked up to see Elijah standing in front of her, glaring at Damon who was on the ground across the room. Elena and Stefan appeared in the doorway, the former running towards her fallen friend who ignored her help and stood up, one hand clutching her neck.

"Kenzie?" Elena quietly called.

The redhead ignored her though as she glared at Damon her lower lip trembling, a glossy sheen to her eyes. For his part he looked down right upset by what he had just done as he stared back at her, the glossy sheen also in his eyes. He made to speak but she shook her head, looking away from him as she glanced around at everyone else. Her lower lip trembled more and before she could break down, Kenzie ran from the room and out of the house as fast as she could.
