You can sit around and wait for the phone to ring
Waiting for someone to tell you everything
Sit around and wonder what tomorrow will bring
Maybe a diamond ring

Well it's all right, even if they say you're wrong
Well it's all right, sometimes you gotta be strong
Well it's all right, as long as you got somewhere to lay
Well it's all right, everyday is judgement day

She wasn't afraid to admit that she was hiding in plain sight. She was watching TV in the front room with her Dad, not even caring that he was watching some sports game. This way, no one could show up in her room and force her to talk or show up at her door and ask how she was because her dad was there and he had no clue what was going on.

She was wearing a pair of shorts with a long sleeve shirt to cover her arms, her hair strategically placed over the one shoulder to keep her neck hidden. For his part, her Dad didn't think anything was up as she sat curled up on the couch, blankly staring at the TV. She loved her Dad dearly but he was so clueless about everything in her life. She didn't blame him for that because she knew he loved her, he had just never been the same since her Mom and sister had died.

A knock sounded at the door and she unfurled herself to slide down further on the couch, only letting the top of her head and eyes appear over the back of the couch towards the door. Her dad stood and she waved at him, motioning to say she was not there as she moved just out of sight of the door. Darren gave her a confused look before going to the door to open it. The voice that spoke was accented and not one that Kenzie recognized.

"Hello, sir, I was hoping to speak with Mackenzie."

"She's not here." Her dad replied.

"Really?" The faceless voice asked. "Then why don't you invite me in to see her."

The way he worded it sent alarms through her head and she shot up from the couch, vaulting over the back of it and running to the door, pushing her dad away from it.

"Who are you?" She demanded to know.

He smiled and she knew exactly who it was. He was thinner, his hair lighter and cut shorter, his cheekbones just as killer as his brother Elijah, making her believe that all vampires really were this pretty and it really was that unfair.

"Klaus." She whispered.

"Macks, what's going on?" Darren asked, trying to come closer.

"I have it Dad, go watch the game."

She had no idea if her D ad was still taking his vervain tea or not but she wasn't about to risk it. When he didn't move, she turned to look at him.

"Dad, it's fine, Klaus is one of my friends brothers. Do me a favour and grab my phone. Call Damon and tell him Klaus has arrived in town and would love to see him."

Her dad finally nodded and returned to the living room to get her phone to do as she asked, when he was out of ear shot, Kenzie turned back to Klaus.

"My, my, you do look a lot like Jill. I mean, if I hadn't met true doppelgangers, I would be completely blown away by the resemblance." Klaus said with a charming smile.

"A pity you missed my twin sister by a couple years." Kenzie replied with a sneer. "What do you want?"

"Oh come now, Mackenzie, there's no reason to be so angry. I only came here to get what's mine."

She raised an eyebrow at him. "I have no idea what you're talking about. In case you've forgotten, I'm just a simple teenager, compelled to be Damon's sex slave."

"I don't quite believe that, especially since you dropped by to see Katerina and let it slip about the moonstone."

Her expression didn't change as she stared at him. "Moonstone?"

"Oh give it up." He cried. "Where is it?"

"No idea."

He moved towards her as close as he could before the invisible barrier stopped him. "Listen, the moment your Dad steps out of this house to do whatever he has to do, I will grab him and I will torture him until you give me what I want."

Kenzie looked back into the house to see her Dad turned away from them, talking on her phone.

"Fine." She ground out through clenched teeth. "You can have it."

"Is it on you?"

"Yes."

"Then why not come for a walk outside." He suggested.

"Because I'm a redhead, not a blonde, I have a lot more IQ points."

"You are funny, Katerina was right. But I think you should come out here before Daddy gets off the phone and I snap his neck."

She clenched her hands before letting out a breath she didn't realize she was holding. What was the worst that could happen? As far as she knew, from what little she heard, the moonstone wasn't needed anymore, right? But then why would Klaus be asking for it, surely he would know that? So maybe she should just go out there and give it to him. Chances were she would hand it over, he'd snap her neck and voila, bounce back in a few hours. Or he'd kidnap her, hold her until Elena showed up, then kill her. She knew more than likely she would die what made it really sad was that moment hesitation when she thought about taking her ring off first. But at the end of it, as much as it hurt her Dad to look at her, she knew it would hurt even more to have her gone so she left it on and with a sigh, stepped out onto the porch.

"Dad, I'm taking him to Damon, be back later."

"Where is it?" Klaus demanded to know, grabbing her arm as he pulled her off her porch and out to the sidewalk.

"In my bra."

He looked at her, confused. "How?"

"I'm wearing a push up bra, there's a lot of padding in said bra, I sewed it in there. Can't really tell, huh?" She asked, puffing out her chest.

He jerked her arm and she stumbled, quickly trying to right herself so she could keep up with him. "You're coming with me and when we get there you have 30 seconds to hand it over before I do it myself."

She scowled. "Listen, maybe if you weren't such an asshole, people would be nicer to you."

"You do realize I could kill you right now?"

Just as she suspected, he had no clue about her ring. How had Katherine and Jill kept that tidbit quiet?

"Yes, I know that but really, what's the point if I plan on cooperating with you on everything?"

"You've been warned." He told her, missing her roll her eyes.

She did keep quiet as he took her back to Alaric's place and entered, pushing her towards Katherine.

"Your 30 seconds begins now."

"Dude, it's sewn into my bra, I need scissors." She told him as she undid her bra and pulled it through her sleeve.

"Help her." Klaus demanded Katherine who looked confused but after a slight hesitation took the bra from Kenzie and ripped it where the redhead told her to. She then took the bra back and pulled out the moonstone, tossing it to Klaus.

"That was my favourite bra." She griped. "you owe me a new one."

"Sit down and shut up." He told her before looking at Katherine. "Keep her quiet."

Katherine grabbed her arm and forced her to the couch.

"Where is Maddox, he should be back by now."

"I don't know." Katherine replied.

He let out a frustrated sigh as he pulled out his phone and sat at the laptop, opening it up and bringing up a grainy image of someone lying down in what looked like a dirt cellar.

"What are you doing?" Katherine asked. "Where's Elena?"

Kenzie looked up in surprise. "Elena? Then why the hell am I here? You got your moonstone and your doppelganger, how about I head home now?"

"I sent her with Greta and you could still prove useful to me Mackenzie, don't you worry." Klaus replied and Katherine squeezed the little redheads arm, warning her with a look to be quiet.

The woman on the screen began crying out in pain and Kenzie looked closer to see it was Jules and somehow she just realized that tonight was the full moon. How could she forget that?

"It's almost time." Klaus gleefully announced.

The door to the apartment opened and everyone looked to the door.

"I wasn't aware you'd been invited in." Klaus spoke.

Damon stepped inside. "I've come here to tell you that you have to postpone the- Red?"

She waved at him from the couch as Katherine stood up and pulled her along.

"For the record, I'm still not talking to you." She told him.

"Lovers spat?" Katherine couldn't help but ask with a smirk.

"He bit me and it hurt." Came Kenzie's flippant reply.

"Will you please just shut up?" Klaus told her before looking at Damon. "We've had this conversation already."

"Yeah, but that was before I rescued your werewolf and vampire and killed your witch."

"Excuse me?" Klaus stood up and stalked towards Damon, looking ready to murder.

"And you can kill me for it. I don't care. It was all me." Damon told him with a smirk.

"No." Kenzie cried out, shaking off a shocked Katherine as she stepped forward. "Don't you even think about it."

"Katerina, why don't you give us three a moment." Klaus demanded.

The she vamp hesitantly walked away, looking as if she wanted to take Kenzie with her but she eventually left.

"You're not killing him." Kenzie passionately cried, stepping in front of Damon.

"Stop." Damon told her, gently pushing her to the side.

Klaus let out a low chuckle as he shook his head. "I've heard about you. The crazy, impulsive vampire in love with his brother's girl."

"I knew it." Kenzie muttered.

"But I had not heard of this little redhead being in love with you and Jill was less than helpful, so I disposed of her. Well full of vervain is a nice touch, no? As for you, Damon, I knew one of you would try to stop me. It was a just a 50/50 guess on who." Klaus moved back to his laptop and reached down, pressing the mute button so Jules cries were broadcasted as she went through transition. "The nice thing about werewolves is they tend to travel in packs. Need a closer look?"

He closed his laptop and picked up his phone throwing it to Damon who grabbed it and looked at it.

"Jules."

"When you spend a thousand years trying to break a curse, you learn a thing or two." Klaus walked towards them and circled them, stopping beside Kenzie. "First rule always have back-ups. Back-up werewolf. Back-up witch."

Damon raised an eyebrow. "back-up vampire?"

Klaus smirked as he bit open a vein in his wrist and grabbed Kenzie with the other arm, pulling her out of reach of Damon, holding a wrist to her mouth. Blood entered her mouth before she realized what was going on and she began to struggle against him but had no choice but to swallow when she needed to breath. Finally he let her pull away.

"I've got that covered too."

His hands grabbed her head.

"No." Damon yelled moving towards them. He knew Kenzie had her ring on but he didn't know how it would work if she was fed blood then killed. He reached them just as Klaus wrenched her neck, snapping it and killing her instantly.

… … …

"Come on Kenzie, please, please, please." Someone muttered as Kenzie gasped, shooting straight up.

"Thank god." The same voice whispered.

Kenzie turned to look at Elena who looked ready to cry. "What is it, what's wrong?"

"You're in transition." A new voice called.

She turned to look and saw a female standing there with a smirk on her face. "Who the hell are you?"

The woman just smirked and turned away and Kenzie turned back to Elena, a tear slipping down the brunette's face.

"I'm sorry." Elena whispered so the other woman couldn't hear her. "But- oh god Kenzie. After you left the house, it was awful. Damon fed me blood, I might be a vampire at the end of all this too, then Klaus took me and when they finally brought me here, you were dead. Klaus fed you blood and killed you. I'm so sorry, I know you didn't want to be a vampire either."

During the explanation Kenzie's eyebrows slowly shot up, practically in her hairline by the time Elena was done. Inwardly, she did a check to see what was and wasn't okay on her. She was breathing heavily, her organs still seemed intact, her heart was racing and most of all she didn't want blood. She checked on her finger and sure enough her ring was still there and she slowly shook her head, knowing she wasn't in transition. The brunette's eyes widened and went to say something but Kenzie put a finger to her lips, motioning Elena to stay quiet about it.

"Where's Damon?" She whispered.

"I-I don't know." Elena replied. "I haven't seen him since he fed me blood."

"He was at Klaus'. Bastard found out about the moonstone and threatened my dad so he got me and the moonstone. Damon showed up, and eventually I died. So no idea what happened to Damon."

"Probably dead by Klaus." Elena said, not sounding regretful.

"Hey, he's trying to save you." Kenzie argued. "he said something about taking away his vampire and werewolf."

"He bit you, Kenzie." Elena cried. "Or have you forgotten already?"

The redhead rolled her eyes. "He does it a lot." She replied much to the horror of her friend. "Usually when we have sex and it's actually pretty hot but that was unwarranted and yes, I'm pissed but I'm going to be more pissed if he's dead."

"Even though you're a vampire now because of him."

Kenzie bit back a grin, shooting another look at the woman. "Even though I'm a vampire."

"And I bet you're hungry." The woman said, moving back to them.

"And I still want to know who you are?"

"That's Greta." Elena explained. "Klaus' witch, Luka's sister."

Kenzie nodded but noticed Elena was no longer looking at her, instead she was looking past her and suddenly she darted away but with a lift of her hand, Greta knocked the taller teen back and another flick brought a ring of fire to life around Elena. She stood up and rushed towards the flame but found she couldn't move outside of it.

"Don't bother trying to get through. I spelled the circle. You're trapped. No matter what you do."

"Let her go." Elena pleaded.

Greta took a sharp rock, slicing her wrist open. "Klaus chose her. Now, drink it." She commanded Kenzie.

Kenzie stared at the wrist, feeling around for another rock. She grasped it in one hand as she stared at the witches wrist, slowly reaching for it as Elena begged her not to do it. She grabbed Greta's wrist, staring longingly at the blood as she leaned closer. Then she yanked Greta's arm as she swung the rock at her head, knocking her down.

"Run." Elena screamed but Kenzie was already one step ahead of her as she took off running into the forest, hoping she stunned the witch long enough to be long gone, perhaps get some help.

"Steven's quarry." Elena yelled after her.

Kenzie stored that away and continued running, dodging fallen trees and ignoring the branches that were scratching her as she pushed herself to the limit, refusing to slow down until she was in a public place. She had to find someone, then she had to find Damon.

She ran for what seemed like hours when she finally saw an abandoned house in the distant and her heart sank, knowing she would have to continue running to find help. As she neared it, a figure appeared outside and she almost cried in relief as he used his speed to meet her.

"Mackenzie? I thought my brother had you."

She grabbed onto his arms, trying to catch her breath. "Ste- Steven's Qu-Quarry." She gasped.

Stefan, Alaric, Bonnie and Jeremy appeared in the doorway and rushed over to them, giving Kenzie another chance to catch her breath.

"Kenzie." Jeremy called.

"No." Alaric cried, looking ready to panic "No."

Kenzie looked confused, shaking her head. "What? I'm fine, I got away. Klaus, he didn't know about my ring, I'm not a vampire so I escaped. They're at Steven's Quarry but he doesn't have a vampire now and I knocked the witch out too."

"Yes, he does." Stefan quietly replied.

"Damon?" Kenzie fearfully asked.

Stefan shook his head but Jeremy was the one who spoke.

"He has Jenna."

… …

Kenzie paced in the house of what she now recognized as the witch house she and Damon had dropped Bonnie and Jeremy off at. In a matter of hours, everything had turned into a huge clusterfuck and she couldn't help but feel slightly guilty. On one hand, if she had stayed, Jenna would have been safe a while longer, on the other hand, Klaus would have realized rather quickly that she was not in transition and would be sacrificing Jenna regardless but by the time he figured that out, they probably would have been rescued.

"It is not your fault." Elijah told her as he reentered the house, having seen Stefan off who had a plan to offer to trade places with Jenna.

"I thought me running away would have delayed it like Damon wanted. I was the back up, how the hell were we suppose to know he would have a Plan C?"

"My brother has been waiting a very long time for this night."

"And I hope your brother rots in hell for this." Kenzie hissed just as the door opened again and John entered the house with some journals that Jeremy had requested.

"Really, my day keeps getting better." She muttered.

John only raised an eyebrow as she pointed towards the basement stairs, looking at the doorway as Damon entered his eyebrows shooting straight up when he saw her. She rushed towards him, throwing her arms around him as he caught her stumbling back a bit. She thought that odd but was too relieved to comment on it.

"Red." He muttered. "You're okay. Are you transitioning?"

She shook her head against his chest. "The ring kept me safe and I knocked the bitch out and ran. I didn't know they had Jenna."

He chuckled softly, smoothing down her hair. "that's my girl."

"I- I'm sorry." She whispered, loud enough so only he could hear.

"Wow that must've hurt saying that."

"Shut up or I'll take it back." She pulled away, going up on her toes to kiss him and when she pulled away, she frowned, noticing he looked a little unsteady. "you okay?"

He nodded, looking at Alaric who had just come up from the basement.

"There's something you need to know." Kenzie told him. "Stefan went to go trade places with Jenna."

"He did what?" Damon asked in disbelief, looking up at Alaric for confirmation.

The history teacher nodded. "He wasn't going to let Jenna die."

"We have a witch." He cried in disbelief. "She kills Klaus, no one has to die."

"Except for Bonnie." Alaric reminded him.

"God, Stefan, dammit." Damon turned and with his vampire speed, punched in the wall. Kenzie moved towards him just as he pulled his arm out, once again looking unsteady.

"Are you okay?" Alaric asked this time, noticing the same thing Kenzie did.

"I'm fine." Damon ground out, before straightening up. "Well, that's my brother for you, always cleaning up his messes." He pushed past Alaric and left the house and Kenzie shrugged at her teacher before following the vampire outside.

"Hey." She called out.

"Go inside Kenzie."

"No." She snapped, running after him and grabbing his arm. He hissed in pain and quickly turned, grabbing her arms as he glared down at her.

"I said go inside. Don't you get what I'm capable of like this?" He asked. "I bit you. I fed Elena my blood to ensure she'll come back even if she dies."

"And yet, here I am." She replied with a shrug.

"Just go before I do something stupid." He hissed, letting her go and walking away.

"I do not wish for a repeat, maybe you should let him be." Elijah said, watching from the doorway.

Kenzie nodded, turning back towards Elijah as a dsudden thought struck her. "Can I borrow your phone? My dad has mine."

He nodded, handing it over and she used it to first call her dad to tell him some made up story about leaving with Klaus to find his missing brother then going to Elena's to study. He bought it no problem and she shook her head at his cluelessness before calling Jack, asking him to meet her somewhere nearby. He agreed and she handed the phone back to Elijah.

"You're leaving." He stated.

She nodded. "I have to, we might need to help. Cover for me, they would never let me go otherwise."

"They're right, I'll go with you."

She bit her lip, before nodding, hoping they would make it back here in time and they set out to the designated meeting place, Jack and Jill already waiting for them when they arrived.

"You sounded upset." Jack said when they were within talking distant.

"I am." Kenzie replied, explaining everything that had gone on since they rescued Jill, the taller redhead looking scared whenever she mentioned Klaus' name.

"We need your help." Kenzie pleaded when she was finished.

"No." Jill whispered, "He will kill us all."

"That's why we'll kill him first." Kenzie shot back. "Elijah is his brother, he says it can be done and it will be but we might need your help, so please go with Elijah and Damon, help them rescue Elena and Stefan and Jenna."

"I- I can't." Jill cried before taking off.

Jack looked at her helplessly. "I must calm her down, I will meet you at the abandoned witch house. I will help you, you are family."

Kenzie couldn't help but hug him before he took off and she turned back to Elijah with a smile. "thank you, we need the help."

"We just might." He agreed as they walked back to the house. He looked up at the moon, mentioning that it was almost time and when they arrived, Bonnie and Damon were walking out of the house, Alaric yelling at them from the doorway as he pushed against an invisible barrier.

"Stay here." Damon ordered her.

"Wait." She called out and he turned around, looking pissed off.

"we don't have time Kenzie, we have to go save my idiot brother, you're not coming."

"Good." She replied, "I don't want to but Jack's coming to help."

Sure enough he arrived, stopping in front of them all with a nod and an apology about not being able to find Jill.

"Everyone just come back alive." Kenzie ordered them before watching them go.

When they were out of sight, she walked back towards the house, easily crossing the barrier that Bonnie had put up for Alaric. She shrugged as she walked past, knowing she could do nothing more than wait now.

… … …
