Book 2
"You don't have to do this." Her companion told her.
"Yes, I do." Kenzie replied as she packed away her makeup.
"Screw it, we can travel and do whatever we want."
Kenzie only shook her head. "What I want to do, is go home, see my dad, start school and graduate from said school. This is my senior year, I plan to make the most of it."
"Oh please, you don't need school, you don't need to even go back there. Humans grow old, they die and you move on."
"But these humans I love, I love my dad, I'm not leaving him, I still have my friends there. Well some of them." Kenzie added the last part as an afterthought. She turned to her companion with a smile. "Don't get me wrong, hanging with you was actually kind of fun and you taught me a lot but I have to go back."
"I'm going to say something completely out of character here but I didn't have to teach you a lot, oddly enough, it came almost natural to you. I've never seen this control from any newbie."
Kenzie only shrugged, looking down at her bag to make sure she had everything. "You told me that everything about your personality was intensified. I spent years learning how to control every little facet of my emotions. I was all about control, it really isn't all that surprising I'm still all about that even more so now and you know what? It's gonna help me when I go back."
Her companion moved closer to her, their eyes wide in surprise and shock. "You mean, they don't know?"
Kenzie shook her head, zipping up her bag.
"None of them?"
"Not a single one." Kenzie replied. "My dad was compelled to tell everyone that I had to go to California for a family emergency and decided to stay out there for the summer. I haven't really spoken with many of them, just some texts telling them I'm having a great time. Rather one text. To Caroline."
"Are you going to tell them when you go back?"
"I-I don't know." She faltered.
"It could work in your favour if you keep it quiet." Her companion pointed out.
"True." She picked up her bag, turning to her companion and her teacher these summer months. "I should get going, my flight leaves soon."
In a move that was strictly out of character for the both of them, they stepped forward to hug.
"I really don't think I could thank you enough for everything you've done." Kenzie whispered.
"Something about you, Kid, I had to help. You need me, you call and I'll be there."
Kenzie nodded, smiling one last time before leaving the hotel room.
… … …
Kenzie hadn't been home more than a couple hours when a knock sounded at her front door. Her dad was at work and she silently groaned at realizing who it was there. Stefan was on her front porch and she wondered when he had returned to town. He was supposed to be in Memphis, wreaking havoc with Klaus. Part of the deal for Damon's cure was Stefan had to hand himself over to Klaus, which he obviously did and the two were off being complete psycho's in her opinion.
Now, she opened the door, pasting on a big smile and knowing this would be her first test. If she could fool Stefan, she could fool the others.
"Stefan, hey. I didn't know anyone knew I was back."
Stefan nodded looking a bit distracted. "Yes, I heard that somewhere, can you come for a walk with me?"
She shrugged, leaving her house and closing the door behind her.
"So how was summer around here?" Kenzie asked, playing dumb. "I've been so busy in Cali, I haven't talked to anyone much."
"Really? So why did you go to Cali?" Stefan asked as he led the way towards Mystic Falls.
"Oh, you didn't hear? Family emergency. Dad had to work so I had to go and decided to stay there. Thank god it happened after everything went down, or I would've been a wreck but I got the call right after I heard Damon got the cure. How's he and Elena doing by the way?" She slyly asked, looking at him out of the corner of her eye.
"Good, good." He replied as they got to the school.
"You want to take a walk and we go to school? I kind of wanted to wait until actual school started." She said with a giggle.
Stefan broke a lock and led her inside towards the auditorium.
"Okay Stefan, what's going on? Did you plan a welcome back party for me?" She kept the smile on her face, playing dumb but inwardly she wondered what Stefan could be up to. She knew for a fact he wasn't supposed to be in town. She knew exactly every place that Stefan had been all summer and he must have made his way back to Mystic Falls the same time that she did. But whatever his plans were for her, she knew it couldn't be good, besides knowing where he had been, she knew what he had been up to. Ripper Stefan was here in full force.
"Not quite." He replied with a mysterious smile.
Kenzie fingered the necklace underneath her shirt which now contained her ring, knowing that with whatever went down, it would probably be what would save her.
"Where's your ring Kenzie?"
She lifted her hands, wiggling her fingers to show she didn't have it on her. "Oh my god." She cried. "The airplane totally made my fingers swell, I completely forgot to put it back on."
"Good, that's good." Stefan said as he grabbed her and forced her to look into his eyes. "I want you to message Damon and ask him to meet you here because you're in trouble and need his help. Then I want you to go up to the catwalk and wait on the very edge just above us. You will not move until I tell you to, got it? And when I tell you to move, take a step forward."
"Yes." She replied, inwardly rolling her eyes as she pulled out her phone and typed out a quick message to Damon, telling him she was in the auditorium at school and in trouble and to please hurry.
Great, she was being used as bait and while she wanted nothing more than to tell Stefan to go fuck himself, a part of her knew that as long as no one knew about her, it could work greatly in her favour at some point. Plus she just wasn't really ready to share with everyone what had happened to her the night she had died a non supernatural death. She would then have to explain who helped her, where she had really been all this time and how she had ended up at the Salvatore house and heard everything that had gone down between Damon and Elena. She couldn't deal with it, she just couldn't. So she used that part of her that was so obsessed with control and kept it all in check.
Now, she walked away from Stefan and climbed up to the catwalk, checking her phone when she reached the top to see Damon had replied, telling her he would be there as soon as possible. She stepped to the edge of the catwalk and froze, glad that she had never been afraid of heights or she would be freaking out right now. The lights went out and she tracked Stefan with her eyes. Technically, she shouldn't have been able to see and she didn't want Stefan to wonder why she all of a sudden could see, so she kept her head pointed forward.
It was only minutes later when she heard Damon approaching but she forced herself not to look as he opened the door and stepped inside of the auditorium. She wanted nothing more than to look at him, even if it would hurt because she hadn't set eyes on him in months and a part of her still loved him, although another part hated him. She was like this now, partly because of him but the real reason she hated him was because he was still completely in love with Elena. It was her name he called out, it was her he confessed his love to when he lay dying and she could not forgive him for that.
"Redbird?" Damon called out.
She kept her mouth shut as Damon turned around coming face to face with his brother.
"Stefan."
"Hello brother." the younger brother greeted with a smirk.
"You don't call, you don't write."
"Need you to stop following me. Causing some problems."
Damon let out a noise of disbelief. "With who? Klaus? Are we supposed to care what he thinks?"
"What you're supposed to do is let me go."
Damon ignored him as he walked closer. "Saw your latest artwork in Tennessee. Walking a fine line there my friend. Keep that up and there will be no saving you."
Stefan smiled and shook his head. "See the thing is, I don't need any saving. I just want you to let me go."
"Nah, I got a birthday girl at home that's not gonna let me do that."
Stefan nodded. "You know, maybe I haven't made my point." He turned to look up at her on the catwalk. "Hey, Kenz you still there?"
"Kenzie?" Damon asked, before following his brothers gaze to see Kenzie standing up on the edge of the catwalk, looking for all intents and purposes bored out of her skull.
"Yup, you know me, just hanging out."
"No, she has a ring." Damon pointed out.
"Funny because I was able to compel her to message you and walk right on up there until I told her otherwise."
"Not cool, brother." Damon hissed.
"Aw, come on! A little bit cool. Huh? Hey, Kenzie, You can move now."
No." Damon cried, moving to step past his brother but Stefan grabbed him using his speed to push him up against a wall. Both brothers waited for the sound of Kenzie hitting the floor but when none came, they both turned to look up at Kenzie who now sat on the edge of the catwalk.
"I told you to move." Stefan told her.
"I did. I'm sitting now, aren't I?"
"That's not what I told you to do, I compelled you." Stefan cried, outraged.
"Yeah, but here's the funny part, I lied about my ring, I am wearing it. I heard through the grapevine that you've been out with Klaus and Damon was looking for you, so here we go, Mackenzie Madeline Miller, bringing families together since, well now."
"Your middle name is Madeline? How did I not know that?" Damon muttered.
"There's a lot you don't know about me." She replied before remembering she really shouldn't have been able to hear that. She quickly spoke again before they began to question it. "So you guys talk it out, kill each other, whatever, I'm going home."
She stepped away from the edge and got off the catwalk, walking home with a scowl. Why did she do all that? Did she really screw everything up that quickly? She better not have.
Kenzie was almost home when Damon caught up with her, grabbing her arm and spinning her around.
"What the fuck was that?" He demanded to know.
"You found your brother, you're welcome."
"That's not what I mean." He ran a frustrated hand through his hair. "You've been gone, all summer."
"I told you I had a family emergency."
"No, you didn't tell me anything. You left, while I was on my deathbed and no one has heard from you since."
"Not true." She shot back. "I texted Caroline."
"Saying you were busy and would talk to her later. What's going on?"
"Nothing." She told him with a shrug as she turned and began walking home.
"Nothing is not an answer. Where were you?"
"California."
"The whole time?"
"Yes."
He grabbed her arm again to stop her. "Bullshit. I went there looking for you."
She cocked her head to the side in confusion. "Why would you go looking for me?"
"I thought something happened to you. You just disappeared in the middle of all this shit going down. My car window was shattered, I smelt your blood in my car and you were just gone."
She realized she was in front of her house and walked up to the porch. "I knew what was going on. I knew you got the cure."
"Then why didn't you stick around?"
"Because Elena had everything in hand." Her reply was frosty as she stopped in front of her door to turn and look at him. "And with Elena there, you seemed to be fine, with everything."
"Really? Because I was a bit busy dying and I thought you of all people would be there."
"I was there." She hissed. "I was there the moment I found out until you almost drained me of blood and took off and when I finally found you again, you were cozied up to Elena on your bed."
"Yeah, dying!"
"Do you even remember what you said?" She snarled, trying her hardest to keep control of herself. "Do you remember calling for her all the time? Or telling Elena that you loved her? Do you remember kissing her?"
He looked shocked by all this and Kenzie shook her head in disbelief. "Can't help but wonder if that look of shock is from not remembering anything or from finding out that I know. Either way, I hope you two are really happy together because as far as I'm concerned Damon, you can kiss my ass. Stay the hell away from me."
She went inside and slammed the door in his face.
… … …
"Oh god. No, please no. Just kill me now, please."
"Why? It's really not that bad, all you need is some blood an-"
"NO." She cried, "I never wanted this. I just want to die, please let me die."
Katherine sighed as she looked at the little redhead who was now sobbing into her hands. "If you were anyone else, I would happily grant that wish, but I've always had a soft spot for your family Red."
"Please." Kenzie sobbed.
"You need a nice stiff drink while you think about this, let me grab you something."
Kenzie continued sobbing until Katherine put a glass in her hand and without thinking, she took a drink, softly moaning as the liquid slid down her throat. She immediately dropped the glass, lifting her head to look at Katherine. The vampire smirked at her and in a flash, Kenzie was up and moving, grabbing Katherine by the throat as she pushed her up against the nearest wall.
"See all that strength? Feels good, doesn't it?"
"You tricked me." Kenzie hissed. "You fed me blood."
"And now you're one of us." Katherine smirked, slowly removing Kenzie's hand from her throat. "Give me a month Red, one month. You want to die after that, then I will stake you myself."
Kenzie glanced over her shoulder, her gaze drifting up to where she knew Damon and Elena were as she tried to decide what to do.
"Fine." She relented. "One month but first you have to compel my dad so he doesn't worry."
Katherine grinned. "And herein lies the first lesson, how to properly compel someone."
"Yeah, whatever." Kenzie muttered.
Katherine wrapped an arm around the new vampire as she led the way out of the Salvatore House. "Oh Red, we're going to have so much fun."
…
Kenzie woke up to the sound of her phone ringing and she reached over and picked it up without looking at the call display.
"If you're calling me this early, somebody better be dying." She said by way of greeting.
There was a pause and finally. "Kenzie?"
The redhead sat up as she recognized the voice. "Elena."
"Damon said you were back, why didn't you call?"
"Been busy reuniting families." Came her short reply.
"It- it's not early, it's actually kind of late."
Kenzie sighed, rubbing at her temple. "Yes, well, I'm something of a night owl now, is there something you wanted?"
"I've been worried about you." Elena softly explained. "You left so abruptly, I'm glad you're back."
"Family stuff, which was good, you know, totally saved you and Damon. Jealous Kenzie is one crazy bitch."
"Jealous?"
Another sigh. "Don't play dumb Elena. The whole time I was with Damon when he was dying, he called for you. I heard him many times. I also heard him declare his love for you and your kiss. How sweet really."
Elena grew quiet and if not for her supernatural hearing, Kenzie would have thought she had hung up.
"I thought he was dying." Elena whispered. "I never meant to hurt you."
"Right, so if Stefan ever dies, I'll make sure to give him a nice big smooch. Goodbye Elena." She hung up the phone, ignoring Elena's protests and fell back onto her pillow.
That was not a conversation she wanted to have just yet and she didn't want to linger on it so she decided to try calling Caroline. The blonde vampire didn't pick up though and Kenzie made a face. Fine, she would go eat instead, she was hungry and her fridge in the basement was stock full of blood.
When her dad had picked her up from the airport, she had made a quick stop to raid the hospital in a nearby town and compelled her dad to forget about the blood and the fridge she had him install in the basement. She wasn't too worried about compelling her dad, in fact it was a necessity if she wanted them to live as if nothing had happened and she really didn't want her dad a part of this world. She wanted to keep him safe. He was all she had left and really she was all he had left.
After grabbing some blood, she decided to go see if she could find Jeremy or Tyler even, someone that she didn't hate on site that she could talk to. A part of her wanted to make sure that her cover would work and no one would figure out what she was until she was damn well ready. If that didn't work, she could always go find Jack and Jill. God knows what had happened to them.
When she was leaving her house, her phone rang and she grabbed it, smiling to see who it was.
"Miss me?" the voice asked.
"Always." Kenzie replied with a smile. "Didn't think I'd hear from you so soon."
"Yes, well, I'm all alone now, just wandering."
"You mean chasing Stefan?"
"Why would you ever think that?" Katherine asked.
"Oh, you know, all the times we ended up somewhere in their vicinity this summer, it doesn't take much to figure it out. He was here you know."
"Must've missed that, do tell."
Kenzie quickly explained how Stefan had tried to use her as bait and how she had gotten out of it.
"Wow, looks like old Stefan is back, I really do love him like that." Katherine said and Kenzie could hear the smirk in her voice.
"ugh, can you be a little less psychotic and creepy?"
The older vamp only chuckled. "Oh my little spitfire, if you would just let yourself go…"
"And lose control? How could I ever do that?"
"That little part inside of you that wants to turn off? So easy to flip it off."
"You keep saying that but I'm telling you K, I don't feel that little part inside of me." Kenzie explained. "Seriously, there's like nothing to turn off."
Katherine sighed. "I keep hoping one day you'll wake up and there it will be."
"Well, when it does, I'll be sure to let you know."
"So what was it like seeing Damon? Have you seen my annoying double?"
"I've talked to her and both of them even tried playing dumb. Damon maybe doesn't remember it but I know Elena does. Ugh, I basically told them both to go shove it and get out of my face."
"You know, if you ever decide to play nice with Damon again, vampire sex is so hot."
"I'll remember that, so what's up?"
"I actually just spoke to Damon to see if he knows where his brother is."
"And it matters to me why?" Kenzie asked as she decided to go find her ancestors instead of her friends.
"Well I happened to mention him moving in on Elena now that little brother is gone and it made him rather upset. I think he still has feelings for you Red."
The redhead sighed. "Why does it matter to you, K?"
"Because I don't like sharing but if I must, I'd rather he be with you then that annoying little twit of a doppelganger. Think how much fun the four of us could have."
Kenzie laughed now and shook her head. "Listen, I'm going to find Jack and Jill, see if they're still here. Don't get too close to Klaus okay?"
"All this time hiding from him? You really think I'm going to let him catch me? Not likely. I did hear another juicy tidbit though. Elijah is with him but daggered."
"Karma can be quite the bitch. We'll talk later, yeah?"
"Of course." Katherine replied. "Don't have fun without me."
"I'll try not to." Kenzie replied with a grin as she hung up.
She was in the woods near the Lockwood estate and stopped to see if she could hear anyone nearby, perhaps see where Jack and Jill was. She didn't expect to hear Caroline crying out though.
"No! Please! Stop! Please stop! Please! I don't hurt anyone, I swear. Dad, I swear. I can handle the urges. I can!"
"Oh hell." Kenzie muttered as she took off with her supernatural speed until she came to a cellar where she could hear Caroline still crying as she spoke to her dad who seemed to be trying to teach her to repress her vampire side.
God, Caroline was the epitome of good vampire. Besides that first night, she never hurt anyone. Katherine had even commented once on how well Caroline's control was, that if she hadn't seen Kenzie's straight off the bat, she'd be impressed with Caroline. Kenzie knew Caroline did it out of the goodness of her heart, whereas she was just afraid that to give in would be to lose control and that option to switch the flip would present itself to her and be far too tempting.
Now, Caroline screamed and Kenzie knew she had to act fast before her dad killed her. If she went down there as plain, simple Kenzie, she could never take on Caroline's dad but if she went down as her vampire self, Caroline would know and that girl sucked at keeping secrets. However, with her hair tied up just right and if she stuck to the shadows and moved too fast, Caroline, who was probably weak and hungry would think she was Jill and she could work with that.
Tying up her hair and putting her hood up, Kenzie moved down the stairs and through the door a dark corner of the room. The other two occupants eyes followed where she moved past them.
"Who is it?" Carolines father demanded.
"I don't know, Dad." The blonde softly cried. "I'm too weak, I can't see."
Kenzie moved again and again from corner to corner until Mr. Forbes no longer knew where to look and when he was disoriented, she struck from behind, going for his neck and sinking her fangs in.
"No, that's my dad." Caroline cried. "Daddy."
Kenzie dropped him.
"Kenzie?" The blonde softly asked and she shook her head.
"Wait, are you Jill?"
Kenzie nodded
"Oh good." Caroline sighed in relief "I thought you were Kenzie and had become a vampire, which would totally suck."
The redhead looked down, glad she was in the shadows, if she only knew. Then what would she think?
Kenzie abruptly left, not giving Caroline a chance to thank her. She used her speed to get far enough away to remove the glasses, take off the jacket and stow it away and put her hair down. She ran back to the cellar and slowed down to a human pace just as Tyler and Caroline's mother arrived.
"Kenzie, you're back." Tyler noted.
She nodded. "Jill just called me, said she saved Caroline from here so I'm coming to check on her."
All three entered, Liz pulling her gun out to train it on her ex husband as Tyler rushed in and grabbed Caroline, picking her up and carrying her out of the cellar. The blonde stopped him when he went by Kenzie.
"Thank Jill for me." Caroline told her. "She saved me and she didn't kill my dad when I asked."
"Even though he did this to you?" Kenzie asked.
"He's still my dad, even if he hates me." She softly replied before Tyler carried her away.
Kenzie could only watch her go with a frown. What would her dad do if he ever found out about her? Truly found out about her and not just be compelled to be okay with it. Would he accept her as she was or would he try and do what Caroline's dad did?
… … …
