With my teeth locked down I can see the blood
Of a thousand men who have come and gone
Now we grieve cause now is gone
Things were good when we were young
Is it safe to say? (c'mon c'mon)
Was it right to leave? (c'mon c'mon)
Will I never learn? (c'mon c'mon)
(c'mon c'mon c'mon c'mon)
And know this day these deepened wounds don't heal so fast
Can't hear me croon of a million lies that speak no truth
Of a time gone by that now is through
Kenzie woke up to her phone ringing and she picked it up as she moved her head from side to side to relieve her neck of any soreness.
"Lo?" She mumbled.
"Red, where are you?" Damon's voice came across the line.
"School."
"Where's Elena?"
"I don't know." She snapped, "A little busy being dead."
"Again?" Damon asked.
"Go fuck yourself. Why are you calling me? Try someone else."
"No one else knows." Damon informed her. "Now I'm just waiting for your side of the story."
Kenzie groaned as she stood up. "Your brother took a bite out of me, sucked me dry, the end."
Damon sighed over the phone. "All we know is Klaus discovered that Elena's blood was the key but Klaus and Elena are both gone."
"He needs Elena's blood, where can he go and withdraw blood from her all the live long day?" She asked with a roll of her eyes as she left the school.
"uhhh…."
Kenzie sighed, rubbing the bridge of her nose.
"The hospital, dumbass, I'm on my way there."
"You can't do anything." He told her.
She bit her tongue so she wouldn't blurt out what exactly she could do. "Go distract, I'll find her."
"Distract how?" He asked.
Another sigh. "I don't know, let him use you as his own personal punching bag? Maybe you should see if Rebekah could take a video of that for me? I would love that."
"Red…" He trailed off with a sigh, unsure of what to say to her.
"Don't bother." She snapped, hanging up the phone and grabbing her jacket she had discarded earlier. She threw it on and zipped it up before taking off for the hospital.
She stopped just short of the entrance, seeing Klaus there and Damon approaching him. Letting the two go at one another, she slipped in through a side entrance, quickly searching as many rooms as she could to find the brunette teen. She finally found her in a room just as a nurse was coming out and Kenzie charged in, not caring the least about the nurse.
"You can't be here." The nurse told her, grabbing her arm.
Kenzie spun on her with a snarl, forcing the nurse to look at her as she compelled her. "Go back to your station and act as though I'm not here. When Klaus comes looking for Elena, you will not remember seeing me."
The nurse nodded, walking away and Kenzie stepped into the room, pulling the IV and needles out of Elena who sleepily opened her eyes.
"Kenzie." Elena whispered. "You're alive. I'm so sorry."
"Shh." Kenzie told her. "my ring was on my necklace. I'm going to get you out of here."
She knew she could have easily carried her, but having to explain that was not on her list of things to do today so she left to go find a wheelchair, running into Damon as she left the room and pointing to where Elena was. He nodded, stepping inside and gathering the girl in his arms before leaving and motioning for Kenzie to follow.
"What about the nurses?" He asked.
"Acting like we don't exist." She replied with a shrug, following him out to his car and getting into the passenger seat as he placed Elena in the back seat.
When he pulled out of the parking lot, he finally chanced a glance at her.
"Got my window fixed." He told her.
"That's nice." She replied, looking out the window on her side.
"Care to elaborate why it was broken and your blood was in my car?"
She slowly turned her head to look at him with a raised eyebrow. "I locked the keys in the car and broke it to get back in.
"Why were you even driving? Driving terrifies you." He reminded her.
"I was looking for you."
He sighed. "Red, look, what happened-"
"Can you just not?" She snapped. "Your girlfriend is in the back seat with a lack of blood going through her, your brother has switched his flip right off and is now certifiably psycho and tried to kill your girlfriend and Tyler is- I have no idea if he's alive or what the hell is going on. So really, I don't have time for you trying to sweet talk your way out of whatever the fuck happened, so do us both a favor and just shut the hell up."
He slammed on his brakes and grabbed her arms, forcing her to look at him. "You don't have the first clue what's going on with Elena and I and let me tell you it's not what you think."
"Let. Me. Go." She snarled.
"How do you know about my brother?" He asked instead.
She inwardly panicked as she realized what she had slipped up. "I umm- I talked to Jill." She blurted out. "She tried to save Elena from Stefan."
He stared into her eyes a moment longer to make sure she was telling the truth before he finally let her go and she turned to look back at the window, refusing to say more until he pulled up to the Salvatore house.
"The least you could've done was take me home." She grumbled.
"Elena needs a friend." Was his reply.
"Ohhh right, like when she was my friend when she was kissing my boyfriend?" She snapped. "So who do I kiss now to piss her off, you or Stefan? Both? I mean, she's clearly still in love with him."
He glared at her as he pulled Elena out of the car.
"Aww, does the truth hurt, sweetheart?" She sneered.
Damon took Elena into the house and put her on the couch as the brunette groaned and became more awake. He turned to Kenzie and with his supernatural speed, raced towards her. She easily tracked his movements but chose not to move when he stopped in front of her.
"Stop it." He snarled. "I'm sick of your goddamn comments about shit you know nothing about. Maybe if you were here at all this summer you'd know the fucking truth. When I wasn't looking for my brother for her, I was looking for you."
"Exactly." She snapped. "When you weren't looking for her. She was your first priority."
He ran a frustrated hand through his hair. "That's not what I meant."
"Kenzie, please." Elena whispered and both turned towards her, Damon leaving to fix her a drink.
"Hey, have some bourbon. It'll help you forget." Elena glanced warily at Kenzie who had yet to move from her spot by the door before taking the glass from Damon. He sat down in front of her and she took a sip of the drink, making a face.
"Yeah, it's strong." Damon said. "You know I can help you forget, too. At least the memories you don't want to keep."
"Don't bother." Kenzie snapped as she walked over to Damon's alcohol stock and grabbed the bottle he had just poured, taking a swig right from it. "She needs to remember."
"No, she doesn't." Damon glared at her and she took another swig, lifting her middle finger at him before answering.
"Yes, she does or she's going to think Stefan can be saved or some crazy shit. He can't, your boy has gone loco and you can't forget that."
"She's right." Elena whispered, looking down at the glass in her hands. "I can't forget that."
"Here." Damon held up Elena's necklace, the one Rebekah had been looking for. "I stole it back for you."
Kenzie only took another swig of the bourbon, rolling her eyes at Elena's reply.
"He's really gone this time. I watched it happen. After everything that we went through to get- to help him. Now he's just... Gone." She looked at the elder brother, tears in her eyes. "Where were you, Damon?"
For his part, he looked guilty as he placed a hand on her leg "I shouldn't have left. I promise you, I will never leave you again."
"Oh gag me, with a knife." Kenzie cried before taking yet another gulp. "There's nothing going on, my ass."
Both looked at her, looking startled as if they forgot she was even there.
"I dunno, I think it's kinda sweet."
All three turned to see Stefan leaning against the doorway, staring at them with a smirk. He glanced Kenzie over, his eyes trailing down her clothes, stopping at her midsection. Kenzie glanced down, noticing a bit of blood from her shirt had seeped through. She crossed her arms over her stomach, trying to remain inconspicuous.
"what are you doing here, brother?" Damon asked, standing up.
Stefan stepped into the room, holding out his arms. "Last I checked, I live here." He stopped beside Kenzie, holding out a hand for her bottle but she only scowled and muttered at him to get his own. He did before speaking again. "Klaus is gone, but he's asked me to keep watch on you until he returns. From now on, you're under my protection."
"Totally keeps getting better." Kenzie muttered. "I'm going home." She saluted them all with her bottle of alcohol before leaving, drinking as she walked down the driveway. She guzzled the rest of the bottle, looking at in disgust before tossing the bottle away with all her might, smirking at hearing it smash far away against a tree.
"That's some arm you got on you."
She glanced at Stefan with a scowl. "Shut up before I go find it and bring it back to smash it over your head." She grabbed the bottle out of his hand and began drinking that.
"You hold your alcohol pretty good for such a tiny little thing."
She shrugged as she kept walking and drinking.
"So when did you become a vampire again?"
Her scowl deepened. "Oh, right about never." She replied without missing a beat.
He nodded, grabbing her and turning her to face him. "Want to try that again? I know how well you can lie but really, you and Jill wearing the exact same clothes with the exact same stab wound in your stomach?"
"What stab wound?" She snapped, yanking her arm away from him.
He lifted an eyebrow before grabbing her jacket and ripping it open, showing her blood drenched shirt underneath. "That stab wound."
"We traded clothes." Kenzie muttered.
"Want to try that again?"
"Why do you even care?" She yelled. "Your switch was turned off, I saw it, so don't pretend to care so you can get into my head and think you can-" She stopped and squinted her eyes at him. "Wait, what the fuck are you trying to do?"
He shrugged. "Nothing, I'm just curious, you put up one hell of a fight for a newbie so I was wondering when it happened."
"It was Jill." She tried again.
He gave her a smirk. "Let it go."
Kenzie rolled her eyes. "I'm going to keep denying it because you're just going to be running back in there and telling everyone."
"There's a reason you want to keep it a secret."
"I enjoy being helpless and useless." She muttered.
"I'll tell you what, you tell me when and why and I won't tell them the what." Stefan told her.
Kenzie cocked her head to the side as she looked at him. "You're Klaus' lackey, that fucknut wants me dead."
"I'm to report on the status of Elena, he thinks you're dead."
"The night Damon got the cure." She blurted out before realizing she was giving her secret away. God, what was wrong with her? Was it the alcohol? Could Vampires get drunk? She totally had to ask Katherine about it.
"Katherine, you're in contact with her?" Stefan sounded surprised and Kenzie slapped a hand over mouth.
"Shouldn't have said that." She mumbled before sighing and removing her hands. "So how do I know you'll keep your word?"
He shrugged. "You don't, you'll have to risk it. You don't say anything, I'll go tell everyone now, you tell me, you hope I keep my mouth shut."
"You're a fucking asshole." She stated. "I was shot in the head, so it wasn't a supernatural death, then I went to your place with no clue what was going on when lo and behold Damon on his deathbed was professing his love for your girlfriend and she kissed him." She glanced at him to notice his only reaction to the last part was a small twitch of his eye.
"And Katherine?" He asked.
"Tricked me into drinking blood and begged me to give her a month. So I left with her that night and we've been off gallivanting the country. Know what was fun? Compelling everyone to let me in the front of the line at all the Disney world rides. Never been there. Katherine indulged me."
"She's K1." He realized.
Kenzie nodded, pointing to herself. "K2. Can't have just anyone going through my phone and realizing it. Now you know, so fuck off and let me drink."
"If it hurts, turn it off." He suggested. "let me tell you, it feels great. No pesky emotions, no stupid love."
The baby vamp shook her head as she let out a humorless laugh. "K1 has been trying that all summer. I can't."
"You can." He told her. "Think of the fun we could have."
Another shake of her head. "No, it's not, I won't. It's I can't. I can't find that fucking switch everyone talks about."
He shook his head. "Impossible."
"Not when everything about you is heightened and the most important thing you have over yourself is control. I value control over my emotions so damn much that it made finding that switch impossible. God, do you know how much more easier it would be if I had that stupid switch and didn't have to feel."
"But you just said you control your emotions."
"I control them but that doesn't mean I don't feel them even a little. Fuck." She screamed, taking the now empty bottle and slamming it against a tree. She fell back against another tree and slumped down. "That was the extent of showing my emotions."
He looked at her with a raised eyebrow. "We should go hunt. It'll make you feel better."
"No, you know what would make me feel better? More alcohol."
"You're drunk." Stefan noted.
She sarcastically clapped. "Thank you, Captain Obvious. Don't tell me turning off your humanity made you stupid."
He chuckled. "Don't make me stake you."
"Don't tempt me. Now do you have more alcohol on your or not?"
He pulled another bottle out and handed it to her.
"Now, I'm going to go home, continue drinking this and go pass out. Vampires don't get hangovers, do they?"
"If you were off with Katherine why did you come back?"
Kenzie shrugged, taking a drink. "I don't know, why do any of us come back?"
"Well, Klaus broke my neck and drove me here."
"You should really look into severing that tie, getting the fuck outta here. What's vampire Barbie like?"
"Chicks in love with me." Stefan replied with a roll of her eyes, producing yet another bottle that he began to drink.
"Holy shit." Kenzie exclaimed, stepping forward as she began to pat him down. "You packing anymore?"
He grabbed her arm, pulling her up to kiss her hard on the lips. Drunk Kenzie momentarily responded until sober Kenzie realized how wrong it felt and she hated herself to realize just how much she missed Damon. She pushed him away, wiping at her lips as she glared at him.
"I'm not that drunk yet." She snapped. "And ya know, for someone that turned off his humanity, I'm surprised you're trying to get back at your brother for kissing Elena."
He raised an eyebrow. "Actually, I'm just looking for some fun."
She let out a small snort as she swiped his bottle and began walking away. "You want some fun, go back to the house and tell Damon and Elena you just kissed me, lemme know what happens, see you later."
She continued her walk home, noting he didn't follow her as she alternately took drinks from each bottle. Her phone rang and she answered it with a grin.
"How's my favorite doppelganger?"
"Still not friends with little Ms. Perfect?" Katherine asked with a smirk.
"She makes me barf. Hey do vampires get hangovers?"
"You're drunk? Tsk tsk. What did Damon and my annoying twin do to you now."
"Nothing." She mumbled. "Stefan's humanity went bye bye. He knows about me. Even kissed me but it was gross. You should come back here and get your man or whatevs."
"Wait Red, back up, what about Stefan?"
She ran through the events of the night and Katherine was left speechless.
"Is this thing on?" Kenzie muttered, looking at her phone.
"You're lucky I like you kid, otherwise I'd rip your heart out for kissing him." Katherine finally said.
"He kissed me, I did not enjoy it."
"Seriously?"
"Don't even get me started." Kenzie replied with a sigh.
"I should come back for a bit." The older vamp mused.
"So Stefan can tell Klaus and kill you. Right. Genius. Now why were you with Damon, did you kiss him?"
"He tell you that?"
"I knew it." Kenzie triumphantly crowed. "But you're a bitch."
"Look, I knew they were after the necklace mini me had so I went there to get it and learned something very interesting in the process."
"Didn't even say hi." Kenzie grumbled.
"Looking like Elena? I'm sure you would've punched me." Katherine said with a chuckle. "But what I learned has to do with you too. Hold on a sec… Say hello Jeremy."
"Hello? Who is this?" Jeremy asked, as his voice came over the phone. Kenzie waited til Katherine was back before speaking.
"Why do you have Jeremy?" Kenzie asked with a sigh.
"Needed to get in touch with Ana."
"His dead girlfriend? I told you she was dead."
"Oh yes, but he can talk to her. You see, that night Damon got the cure from me and I found you, Jeremy was shot by the Sheriff in the Mystic Grill."
"What?" Kenzie asked in disbelief, her mind racing over this new info. "Is he-"
"Nope, not a vampire. Bon Bon brought him back after he died and it left him with a nifty new super power."
"Wait, so Caroline's mom was the one who killed me?" She asked in disbelief. "Why would she shoot Jeremy?"
"Trying to kill Damon. Has no one told you Mama Forbes knows everything now?"
"No one has told me anything." She replied through gritted teeth.
"Nobody would feel bad if you killed her." Katherine suggested.
"No." Kenzie snapped. "I'm going to finish getting belligerently drunk, then go home and sleep until school starts. What a shitty day."
"Hey, you're not dead, so there's that." The older vamp reminded her.
"Well, I kind of am, now we see how long until Stefan tells everyone about me. That should be fun."
Katherine chuckled before turning serious again. "K2, if Klaus comes back, think about skipping town with me, something tells me you're high on his hit list now."
"Don't care. I'll talk to you later." Kenzie mumbled before hanging up the phone and letting out a scream of frustration.
Maybe she just should've stayed gone.
