11/30/16
This is the end of season 3 and we are on our way through season 4, I'm trying to get a few chapters ahead again.
Taking it slow, but it's not typical
He already knows that my love is fire
His heart was a stone, but then his hands roamed
I turned him to gold and it took him higher
Well, I'll be your daydream, I'll be your favorite things
We could be beautiful
Get drunk on the good life, I'll take you to paradise
Say you'll never let me go
Deep in my bones, I can feel you
Take me back to a time only we knew
Hideaway
We could waste the night with an old film
Smoke a little weed on the couch in the back room
Hideaway
Say you'll never let me go
... ... ...
Damon groaned as he woke up, his phone vibrating with text messages.
"Why am I still alive?" he whispered to himself, turning his head and seeing Kenzie's body slumped against the locker. The stake was gone but she was still dead.
"Kenzie." He whispered, crawling over to her, one hand cupping her cheek as the other one ran over her hair. A tear slipped out of the corner of his eye and he quickly wiped it away as he heard a groan behind him. He turned around to see his brother finally waking up.
"Damon?" Stefan groaned. "We're alive."
"Not all of us." Damon snapped.
Stefan turned his head, taking in the body of the redheaded vampire. He glanced over the body, letting out an inaudible sigh of relief.
"Get up." A new voice commanded them. "Klaus is going to kill Elena."
"Do you think I even fucking care any-" Damon stopped as he turned to the new voice, his eyes widening in disbelief at the redhead currently being held by Alaric. "Red?" he whispered.
"I was worried." She said with a sheepish smiled, her eyes sweeping over them before they came to rest on the body behind them.
"Jill?" She cried, forcefully pulling her arm away from Alaric as she rushed to her ancestors side. She dropped to her knees, cradling her face as she looked her over. "Who did this?" She demanded to know.
"Me." Alaric replied. "She wasn't important, so I disposed of her."
"You son of a bitch." Kenzie screamed, standing up and running at him, only to be stopped by Damon, who had quickly stepped in her path.
"He'll kill you."
"He killed Jill. You fucking psychopath. I'll make sure you fucking burn for this."
Alaric only stared at her with indifference before turning to Stefan. "Klaus is going to kill Elena." He reiterated.
"What are you talking about?" Stefan asked. "Klaus needs Elena's blood to make hybrids. She's the last person that he'd kill."
"The witch bound my life to Elena's. If she dies, I die. Klaus figured that out and now he's taken her. I'm trapped here until the sun goes down, so you two better start doing what you do best, saving Elena's life." He pushed past them, leaving the three in the hallway.
When he was gone, Damon pulled Kenzie to him, breathing in the scent of her hair as he sighed in relief.
"I thought that was you." He murmured. "I thought it was you and I couldn't do anything to stop it."
"You thought Kenzie was a vampire?" Stefan asked, exchanging a look with the little redhead.
"They're damn well close to being dopplegangers." Damon pointed out. "I couldn't tell the difference while we were all fighting Alaric."
"I wouldn't be caught dead wearing that top." Kenzie told him with a small sniff, stepping away to kneel down beside Jill. "I asked her to come help us. No, I told her she better come help us. I never expected it to end this way. All she wanted was to reconcile with Jack and now, she's dead. What do we do about her?"
"First we need to rescue Elena, we'll come back for her." Stefan said, leaning down and helping Kenzie to her feet. "I promise."
She nodded, moving back towards Damon as he wrapped an arm around her, pulling her close to him.
"Why didn't Alaric do anything to you?" Damon wondered. "I don't think he cares who he destroys right now."
Kenzie shrugged. "I snuck into the school and tried to find you. He caught me and started going on about me being a vampire sympathizer and some other junk but he was also mumbling that he needed you guys awake to save Elena. I gently pointed out that if he killed me, Damon wasn't going to help him and Elena would die. Then we came across you guys as you were waking up."
"Gently?" the elder brother asked with a small smirk. "Redbird, there's not many things you do gently."
She grinned up at him.
"So how do we rescue Elena?" Damon asked as they walked outside.
"She's probably at the mansion." Stefan replied, just as his phone rang. He pulled it out of his pocket and answered it as Damon pulled out his phone and looked down at the text, seeing it was from Bonnie, wondering what she should do.
"That was Tyler." Stefan told them. "Klaus is at his mansion and he's currently draining Elena's blood."
"Bonnie wants to come out. We might need her help with this."
"Wait." Kenzie cried, her eyes wide as she looked between them. "We want to get rid of Klaus but we can't because he sire's ou- your line, right?" she asked, ignoring her little slip up. "Why don't we do to him what we were planning to do to Alaric?"
Both brother's looked at her, their eyes wide as they realized what a great plan it was. If they could desicate Klaus and dump him into the ocean, they would be free of him and they could find another way to deal with Alaric, if he wasn't too busy on some crazy hunt to track down Klaus.
"I'll tell Tyler we're coming." Stefan announced. "Tell Bonnie to stay there and be ready, we're doing it."
Damon nodded, typing out a message to Bonnie before grabbing Kenzie and kissing her hard. "You're a genius." He exclaimed.
She rolled her eyes. "I know. And stop kissing me."
"Not this again." He groaned.
She shrugged. "Let's get rid of Klaus. We can talk after."
"So you're going to talk to me now?" he asked.
"I'm open to the idea." She replied with a grin. "I think we have a lot to talk about."
"I agree."
"Alright, let's go." Stefan yelled out to them, already by the car.
"You should stay-" Damon began, only to be cut off by the little redhead.
"Don't say it. I'm coming with you. At least I can get Elena out of there."
He agreed, a part of him not wanting to be far from the redhead just then.
They got into the car, Damon driving as fast as possible to the mansion as they talked over their plan. Tyler was going to wait until Elena was alone and untie her, carry her out if possible. If not, the guys would be there, holding down Klaus and doing the spell while Kenzie got Elena out of there.
Tyler messaged Stefan, moments before they arrived, informing them that he was going in. The brothers glanced at each other before taking off into the mansion, leaving Kenzie to follow at a human pace. She went inside, following the sounds into one of the rooms. Tyler and Damon each held one of Klaus' arms as Stefan's fingers plunged into his chest and the Original began to scream. Glancing around, Kenzie saw Elena on the steps and rushed over to her, helping the very woozy teen to her feet.
"Are you okay?" she asked.
Elena glanced at her, her eyes narrowing. "Kenzie? I thought you were dead."
"It was Jill." The redhead replied. "Can you stand?" She helped the much taller girl to her feet, supporting most of her weight as Damon walked over to them, glancing over Kenzie before turning to Elena.
"Are you okay?" he asked.
She nodded, glancing at Klaus before letting Kenzie lead her out.
"We need to get her home before the sun sets." Kenzie whispered to Damon.
He nodded, all three of them stopping to glance back at Klaus who was being lowered to the ground by Tyler.
"Let's go." Kenzie urged them, glancing at Stefan to make sure he was okay. He gave her a small nod and she returned it with a small smile, slowly leading Elena out to the car.
"I would've dropped him." She muttered as she helped Elena into the front seat.
Damon smiled at her, pulling her into his arms. "See? You don't do anything gently. I kind of like that about you."
She smiled up at him, glancing back at Elena, whose eyes were closed, her head against the headrest.
"Damon, there's something I need to-"
"Let's go." Stefan called out as he walked out of the house. "We'll get the girls into the house then come deal with Klaus."
The redhead nodded as she pulled away, frowning as she got into the backseat, Stefan getting in beside her. It seemed everytime she worked up her nerve to say something, she was either cut off or quickly chickened out.
How was she supposed to tell him?
… … …
All four walked up to Elena's house, the brunette claiming she was fine and didn't need an escort but was quickly shot down by both Salvatore's who reminded her that Alaric would be terrorising the streets at any moment.
"He can't hurt me." Elena reminded them. "It's you guys we need to worry about."
"Well he won't be able to find us." Stefan replied as they reached the front door. "I'll call you when we get back."
Elena nodded, glancing at both men. "I know it's selfish, like I'm stringing you both along but I don't know what to do-"
Damon cut her off, holding up a hand as he glanced at Kenzie, the redhead's jaw set as she looked down at the porch. "Elena, stop. Honestly, all those times, it was a mistake. I see that now. Once upon a time, perhaps but- I love Red here. It's always been Red and I was an idiot to think otherwise."
Kenzie's head shot up to look at him. Her eyes wide as she stared at him, the blood rushing to her ears as he declared in front of his brother and Elena that he loved her. She didn't hear Elena's reply or Stefan telling Damon it was time to go before saying he would give them a moment. Elena went into the house and Stefan returned to the car, leaving Damon and Kenzie alone.
"You just rejected Elena." She finally whispered.
He gave her a small smile, stepping forward to cup one of her cheeks. "Do you believe me now?"
"Why?" Was all she could say.
"Because it's always been you." He replied. "Maybe, once upon a time I loved Elena, maybe I still tried to see if I did. But you're the one I want, Kenz, and I wasn't lying when I said I would take however long I need to make you see it."
"That was downright sappy for you." She informed him.
"Even I have a romantic bone somewhere in my body."
Stefan honked the horn and Damon turned to glance at him, gesturing for him to hold on.
"I have to go help deal with Klaus. We'll make sure Jill is looked after as well. I'll call you when can."
Kenzie grabbed his arm. "No, I want to go with you."
He shook his head. "Not this time, Red. Stay here, help watch over the others and I'll be back as soon as I can, I promise."
"But-"
"Stay here. They need you."
She bit her lower lip but finally gave a small nod. "Call me the moment you can?"
He nodded, leaning down to capture her lips with his. "I'll be back soon. Don't forget about me."
She rolled her eyes as he stepped away. "I spent all summer trying to forget you. I don't think it's going to happen."
"Good." He replied, his cocky smirk back in place as he walked backwards down the steps. "I'm in your head. I'll see you soon Red."
She watched him get into the car, waiting until they had drove off and turned a corner before she went inside.
Now all she had to do was wait for him to come back.
As soon as she entered the kitchen, Caroline handed her a shot and she looked around, seeing that Jeremy, Bonnie, Tyler and Matt were all there, throwing a victory party. Elena lifted her shot glass to her and with a small cheer, they all downed the shot.
They were free.
Klaus was finally gone.
… … …
Kenzie had only been asleep for a little while when she was awoken by her phone ringing. She picked it up and answered it, not bothering to look at the call display.
"Kenz?"
"Stefan?" she mumbled. "Calling already? Wait, did something happen?"
"Yes but not on our end, on your end. Jeremy found Elena, she had collapsed and was bleeding and he took her to the hospital."
"What?" She asked in disbelief, "Alaric is out there."
"I know. Look, Damon's continuing on, I'm on my way back but I need your help."
"Of course, anything."
"We told Jeremy to get her out of there before Alaric shows up, can you go meet them, make sure she gets home safe."
"Of course, I'm on my way."
She hung up, grabbing the first thing she could find and put it on, taking off for the hospital with supernatural speed. She arrived just as Elena and Jeremy were exiting and slowed down to a human pace.
"What are you doing here?" Jeremy asked, looking surprised to see her.
"Stefan called, he wants to make sure you guys get home."
"He called us too." Tyler announced, walking up with Caroline and Matt. "We need to get you home now."
"That was the plan." Jeremy snapped, leading Elena over to the car and helping her in. The others quickly split up, a second car following behind just in case there were any problems. As they reached the house, they all gathered around Elena, helping her up the porch and into the house.
"Couch." Caroline told her.
"I will." Elena promised. "I just want something to eat first."
"We're on it." Tyler volunteered. "As soon as we make sure no one is lurking in the closet."
"I"ll go scrounge up some food." Kenzie said.
"I"ll go to the Grill and grab something." Jeremy informed them, quickly leaving again.
Kenzie went into the kitchen, finding some ingredients to make a sandwhich with as Caroline talked to Elena on the couch. By the time Kenzie had finished, Elena was asleep and the redhead let out a small pout as she stared at the sandwich. She had actually put effort into it and now it looked like it was going to waste.
"That looks great, I'm starving." Matt exclaimed, coming down the stairs. He glanced over to the couch and seeing that Elena was sleeping, turned puppy dog eyes to Kenzie who grinned at him as she pushed it towards him. He took it, takng a huge bite out of it.
"This is good." He mumbled around the food.
"That was pure luck." She replied, just as Caroline and Tyler's phones went off.
They gave each other a curious look but answered it, both trying to calm down their Mom's, who were begging them to come home.
"What's wrong?" Kenzie asked with a small frown, as they hung up.
"I don't know but apparently we both have a family emergency." Caroline replied. "Will you guys be okay?"
Matt and Kenzie nodded.
"As long as we don't leave, we're safe in the house." Kenzie reminded them. "So go, keep us updated."
"We will." Caroline replied, as they both left.
Matt and Kenzie stared at each other with a small smile.
"I feel like you and I haven't spent a lot of time together." Matt noted.
"Not just the two of us." She agreed. "But Stefan should be here soon. I'm just going to clean the kitchen up, keep myself busy."
"Did you need help?"
She shook her head and he went out into the living room to sit beside Elena while she slept. The redhead took her time, hearing Elena wake up and have a quiet conversation with Matt before the door opened and Stefan walked in. Elena's face lit up as she stood and walked towards him, throwing her arms around him.
He tightened his arms around her, breathing a sigh of relief before fnally letting her go and leading her back to the couch.
"Is everything okay?" he asked.
Kenzie nodded. "Caroline and Tyler had to go deal with their moms but we were in the house so I figured that's okay."
"I'm still hungry." Elena mumbled.
"Well, there was a sandwich, then you fell asleep so I gave it to Matt."
"It was good." The football player informed her.
"I'll make you something else." Stefan promised, moving into the kitchen. "I'll find something for all of us."
Matt followed after him, offering to set the table.
Elena sighed. "I'm being overcoddled."
"You're on house arrest." Stefan reminded her. "You're supposed to be coddled."
"Wouldn't it be smarter if we just got you the hell out of town?" Matt asked.
"And do what?" An exasperated Elena asked. "Go on the run for the rest of my life? No thank you." She stood up, gathering her blanket. "And I'm not an invalid, I'm done with the couch." She stormed out of the front room and Kenzie drifted into the kitchen.
"So you're just going to let her call the shots?" Matt asked.
Stefan shrugged. "Letting her make her own decisions."
"Even if they're wrong?" He challenged.
"Nothing wrong with free will Matt. Trust me, you don't realize that til you lose it."
Kenzie reached over, squeezing Stefan's hand as Elena called his name.
All three turned towards her, seeing her at the front door, Elijah standing in front of her, inside the house.
"Elijah." Stefan whispered.
"Hello again." He replied.
"Elijah." Kenzie squealed, running and jumping at him. She threw her arms around him as he easily caught her, spinning her in a small circle.
"Mackenzie, I'm glad to see you are well and seem to harbour no ill feelings towards me."
"Kenz." Stefan called in warning.
"Oh relax." She rolled her eyes as she pulled away from Elijah, looping her arm through his. "I'm guessing if Elijah is here, it's to help us with Alaric, which I'm guessing Rebekah told you about."
"You are correct." Elijah said with a small smile as she led him to a chair.
"Before we start though, we need to call Damon." Kenzie pulled out her phone and called Damon, who answered right away.
"Is everything okay?" He asked by way of greeting.
"Mostly." She replied, putting him on speaker. "Elijah's here. I think he has a plan."
"Of course Elijah is there." He muttered. "And what sort of plan does the wonderful Elijah have."
"I think he's still a little jealous of you." Kenzie stage whispered.
"Will you get on with it?" Damon snapped.
"All we need to do is take the stake away from him. Once he's been disarmed and the weapon is in my possession, my family will scatter to the ends of the earth and Alaric will follow."
"And you'll just… run?" Stefan questioned, sittign down across from him.
"We've done it before." Elijah reminded him. "Klaus and Rebekah spent the better part of 1000 years evading my Father. What's another half century while Elena's able to live out the rest of her natural life?"
"There's a catch isn't there?" Kenzie asked.
"Again, you are right."
Kenzie sighed, sitting down beside him. "You want Klaus, don't you?"
"I do. I heard what the witch has done to him, I heard Damon is currently taking him somewhere far away."
"We finally stopped him, Elijah." Elena informed him. "After everything he's done to us, I can't just let you bring him back."
Elijah leaned closer, wanting her to see how earnest he was. "I give you my word, Elena, I will not revive Klaus within yours, nor even your children's lifetime." He leaned back smoothing down his slacks. "Perhaps that will finally teach him some manners."
"Why should she trust you?" Matt finally spoke up,coming to stand behind Elena. "All you've ever done was screw her over."
"And for that I'm deeply ashamed." Elijah replied. "But know this, she could've been dead the instant I walked through that door tonight, so, Elena, I leave it to you to make the decision whether to trust me or not."
"Not." Damon yelled over the phone. "Hello? Did that concussion give you brain damage? His lunatic siblings will kill you the first chance they get."
"Rebekah and Kol will honor the terms if you return Klaus' body to us, Elena will come to no harm."
Elena looked at Stefan, who turned to look at Kenzie who gave a small shrug. She believed Elijah's intentions were good but this was out of her hands.
"So, do we have a deal?" Elijah asked.
"No." Damon yelled. "No, no, no, no. Did I mention no?"
Stefan sighed, looking over at the brunette. "Elena, it's up to you."
"Oh come on." Damon cried.
"Why do you want Klaus' body?" Elena asked, ignoring the brother on the phone.
"He's my brother, we remain together."
Elena let out her own sigh before coming to a decision. "We have a deal."
"What?" Damon yelled in disbelief.
Kenzie stood up, taking him off speaker phone as she went into another room. Sure, she was only fooling herself in thinking she had privacy but she wanted to talk to Damon alone.
"I believe him." She informed Damon.
"Of course you do, he probably made googly eyes at you."
"So you are still jealous?" She asked with a small smirk.
"No." Came his petulant reply.
"I trust him and now you can come home sooner."
"I don't trust him."
"Duly noted." She replied with a grin. "Now get home."
… … …
A very impatient Kenzie sat on the porch, angry that Damon wouldn't be coming home just yet. He had to go meet Rebekah and give her Klaus and Kenzie was more annoyed than anything. Something was bugging her and as a result, she just wanted Damon back here so the uneasy feeling could go away.
The door opened and Matt slipped outside, meeting Jeremy who was coming up the walkway. Both of them sat down on the steps, not even noticing that they weren't alone.
"Alaric stopped to talk to me." Jeremy muttered. "He wants the location of Klaus' body."
"So what are you going to do?" Matt asked.
"What I want to do? Is run into the house, grab Elena and get her out of here and away from all this."
"So why don't we?" matt wondered.
"Good luck getting her past all the Vampires in there." Jeremy reminded him. "Even if I wanted to help Alaric, I have no idea where Klaus' body is."
"I do."
Kenzie's head tilted to the side as she leaned forward, the porch swing she was on letting out a small squeak as she did. Both guys turned to see her, letting out a small sigh of relief when they realized it was just Kenzie.
"Did you hear all that?" Jeremy asked.
She shrugged. "Not my fault you didn't look to see if you were alone. So, Matt has the location, you gonna help Alaric?"
"No." Jeremy cried. "Look, I want Elena safe but to do that, it means killing everyone else. Maybe I'm not find of Vampires but we'd also lose some good ones."
Kenzie stood up and looked between the two. "Maybe we can use Alaric wanting to help you to our advantage. The Originals can get their weapon and everyone can be off and maybe we can try to remember what it was like before Klaus showed up here."
Jeremy stood up, leading the way inside, "You might be right."
When Kenzie and Matt caught up to him, he was just gathering everyone together and telling them about his conversation with Alaric. After a quick discussion, they decided on where they should tell Alaric that Klaus was and Jeremy called him, telling the new vampire that Damon was burying him in the woods off of route 12, promising to text the specifics. When he hung up, he looked at them, giving them a small nod.
"He bought it."
"Good." Stefan replied. "Bonnie is meeting with Damon right now to do a spell so Klaus can't be located. We'll go deal with Alaric. Matt why don't you stay here with Elena?"
"You're taking Jeremy and Kenzie?" Elena asked.
"I'm going." Her younger brother announced. "I want to make sure this ends tonight."
Elena looked at Kenzie and shr shrugged. "I'm useful in my own way." She lifted her eyes to meet Elijah's, giving him a small smirk as she did so.
"Can I talk to you alone?" Elena asked Stefan, standing up and taking him upstairs.
Matt motioned to Jeremy and the two went back outside to talk, leaving Kenzie alone with Elijah.
"So." Elijah began, moving closer to her. "No one-"
She cut him off with a shake of her head. "not yet. Damon might but he hasn't said anything."
The Original smiled. "He doesn't seem like the type to sit on information when he has it."
"I'm sure you're right but I still feel like he knows. As for everything else, I like it how it is right now. Sometimes I feel almost normal still."
"I don't think they would reject you because of what happened to you."
"You're probably right but before it was just easier to be Jill and do what I needed to."
"I heard what happened to her, I'm sorry."
Kenzie sighed, tiredly rubbing her forehead. "Yeah, me too." She glanced at Elijah before looking away again. "Is it true? Did Klaus sire our blood line?"
"That's what he says. I know it wasn't me and Rebekah says it wasn't her or Kol."
"Great." She muttered. "Why couldn't we get a cool Original?"
He smiled, stepping even closer to her. "I don't have much time here. The moment we get the weapon, I must leave again."
Kenzie gave him a sad smile as she looked up at him. "So much for that date then, huh? And if this was your subtle way of asking me to go with you again, you know I can't."
"I had to at least try."
"Maybe after Alaric's gone. I've got all the time in the world now. Just don't kill Klaus in the meantime, no matter how annoying he is."
"Maybe trapped as he is, he'll be slightly less annoying." Elijah replied, stepping back. 'I'm going to go to our designated meeting area. I'll see you when you arrive."
She nodded, watching him go and quietly waited for Stefan to return. He motioned for her to go out to the car and she did, watching him talk on the phone before he got in, Jeremy climbing into the backseat with them.
They were silent on their way out to Route 12 and when they arrived, walked into the woods to meet Elijah and Caroline who were already waiting for them. Stefan told Jeremy to call Alaric but stopped him when his phone vibrated and he saw Damon on the line.
"Damon?"
Kenzie stepped closer so she could hear.
"Bad news, brother. Alaric staked Klaus, he's dead."
Kenzie's eyes widened as Stefan gave a small nod, trying not to show too much of a reaction.
"I feel okay, do you feel anything?" Stefan asked.
"No." Damon replied.
"It took Sage about an hour before she got sick."
Tears filled Kenzie's eyes as Jeremy stepped up beside her, wrapping an arm around her shoulder, having heard Stefan's side of the conversation, and figuring out what that meant.
"Yeah, or Klaus was lying about being the sire of our blood line."
"Well, if he wasn't lying-" Stefan turned to look at Kenzie. "I don't know if an hour will be enough time."
"For us to have our epic goodbye, Stefan?"
"Not us, brother but you and Kenzie."
The redhead stepped away from Jeremy, throwing her arms around Stefan.
"I guess you'll just have to say goodbye for me, won't you." Damon whispered. "Call me if you cough up a lung."
He hung up and Stefan wrapped his arms around the little redhead as she sobbed into his jacket.
"Stefan." She cried. "I love you. And I'm going to make it there."
He pulled her away from him, leaning down to kiss her forehead. "Good luck Kenz, I'm sorry you ever got pulled in to this."
She gave a small nod, sending Jeremy a weak smile before she turned and took off running at a human pace past Caroline and Elijah who had just joined them. She waited until she was out of sight before using her supernatural speed to get to the storage lockers he had tried to hide Klaus at. She got there to see Damon leaning up against the car, his head back as he looked up at the sky. She softly called his name and he looked up at her, his brows furrowed as he realized she was actually standing in front of him.
"Redbird?
With a small sob, she threw herself at him, burying her face in his chest. He immediately wrapped his arms around her, petting her hair as he whispered nonsense in her ear.
"I don't want you to die." She sobbed. "We haven't completely made up yet. I don't want to die. I thought I did but I don't, I want to stay here, I want to be with you."
He pulled away and looked down into her eyes, pushing a few stray hairs off her face. "So it's true then?"
She nodded. "Since- since the night Caroline's mom shot Jeremy. Her second shot got me."
He looked away from her in shock. Sure he all but knew but to hear her actually admit it now, threw him for a loop and made it seem all the more real.
"I'm sorry." She cried, her eyes screwing up even more as the tears poured out. "I should have told you but I couldn't. I spent so much time just being mad at you and now I've wasted it all and we're going to die."
"We're together." He pointed out, sliding down to the ground and pulling her into his lap.
"How- how did you find out?" She asked, sniffling against his chest.
"Your sister told me."
"You would've said something, you don't like keeping quiet."
He shrugged. "I honestly figured we had more time to figure this all out, that you would come to me when you were ready. I'm sorry Red, for everything."
"I'm sorry too."
They grew quiet and Kenzie waited, wondering what it would feel like. She had seen Sage die, it had looked painful. What would happen to her after? She was a vampire. Was there a heaven? Was there a vampire heaven? Would she see Mads and her Mom? Would she see Damon after they had both moved on?
"Do you feel anything yet?" Damon finally asked
She shook her head. "You?"
"No."
"Do you think it will hurt?"
"Probably."
She let out a shaky laugh. "I think you were supposed to lie and tell me no."
"It's almost the end, I don't want to go out with lies between us." He said with a small smirk.
"Maybe Klaus lied."
"Maybe." Damon murmured, tensing up beneath her. She lifted her head to see Alaric staring down at them with disdain.
"Stand up." Damon whispered to her.
She obliged, grabbing his hand as they squared off against Alaric.
"I see you're still pissed." Damon observed. "I take it Goldilocks gave you the slip?"
Alaric rushed forward, pushing Kenzie out of the way as he punched Damon in the face, dropping him to the ground. The redhead was on her feet, running into Alaric with all her might and pushing him away from Damon. He hit the wall hard, his eyes lighting up with glee as he realized that it was Kenzie in front of him and she was, in fact, a vampire.
"Well, well, when did this happen?"
"You stay the fuck away from us." She hissed, helping Damon to his feet.
Alaric rushed at them again, grabbing Kenzie by the hair, spinning her around and throwing her hard. She hit the coffin, her head hitting the edge of it and opening up a cut.
"Stay down." Damon yelled at her as Alaric continued to beat him down.
"What? You're not going to fight back?" Alaric sneered.
"You're kind of invincible, Ric." Damon pointed out.
"Don't call me that." He yelled, punctuating it with a kick to the ribs. "We're not friends."
"We were." Damon reminded him.
"Well our friendship was part of the problem, it's what kept me weak. That's why it took so long for the real me to break through and now I'm going to break you." He punched Damon in the face, knocking him to the ground and turning to Kenzie who was pulling herself up with the coffin.
"But first, I'm going to break your little girlfriend in half." Alaric grabbed Kenzie's hair again but this time she was ready, lashing out and kicking him in the knee as hard as she could. He crumbled to the ground and she ran over to Damon, telling him to get up, that they had to run. She didn't see Alaric moving up behind her, the stake raised up to stab her, but Damon did and he easily pushed the redhead aside, grabbing Alaric's wrist and pushing him back as he got to his feet, punching the invincible vampire in his face. Kenzie joined Damon, both of them working together to keep Alaric at bay when he stopped, dropping the stake he held in his hand as he grabbed Damon for support.
"What's happening?" He gasped.
They watched in surprise, wondering what was going on when it finally clued in with Damon. "Oh no." He whispered.
"What's wrong?" Kenzie asked, staring with wide eyes as Alaric let out a yell of pain.
"No." Damon cried. "No, no, no. Ric."
Before their eyes, Alaric died and Damon looked at Kenzie his eyes wide andshe finally understood.
"No." She shook her head, not wanting to believe it.
"She's not dead." Damon cried.
"Elena." Kenzie whispered.
