Chapter 8: Whatever Happened to Daisy Duck?

Back in New Duck City, Daisy was just coming home from work. It was dark by the time her cab pulled up to her apartment building, and Daisy let out a tired sigh as she paid the cabbie and got out. She had been gone longer than she had intended…

But then, she had been offered a bonus for doing a special weather report for K9 News tonight. Again. Really, they should start paying her on a weather-woman payroll rather than just offering her a bonus for every extra job that popped up - because honestly, Daisy was the only one who was willing to be the weather-woman. And this was the 6th this week she'd been offered a bonus because Rufus Barkworthy hadn't showed up.

"Battle for another time," Daisy said to herself, stepping into the building and going for the elevator. To her dismay, there was an "Out of Order" sign on it, and yellow tape crossed over it. Great. Just...great.

Thankfully Daisy only lived on the 3rd floor, not the 7th. Stil, though, three flights of stairs is a lot. Which is why, when Daisy finally arrived at her floor, she was exhausted. She'd been working all day, and late into the night - and had to walk up three flights of stairs.

Daisy stuck her key in her apartment door, room 11, and unlocked it. She opened the door to an apartment. One that was much too quiet for her taste. Diane was staying at her cousins, April, May, and June's for a few days...and while Daisy was glad that her daughter was spending time with her cousins...she also missed her.

Tossing her purse and keys on the couch, Daisy made her way to the kitchen. She didn't have to work tomorrow. As a matter of fact, she didn't' have to work for the rest of the week. She'd nearly fainted of exhaustion on the job, and when she woke up her friend, and co-worker, Clara Cluck said she needed to take the week off. It was an order, not a request - because the last thing K-9 News needed was for some rival reporter to say K-9 was over working it's employees.

"What to do, what to do…" Daisy said to herself, picking out a box of left over Chinese food. She opened the box and took a whiff - and then nearly barfed. The stuff was overgrown with green mold, and smelled like something had just died.

Still holding her nose, Daisy opened a window by the fire escape and tossed the moldy food into an open garbage bin. Once it was gone, she closed the window and breathed in the fresh air.

"I'm going frozen food tonight," She said, heading back to the fridge. This time she opened the freezer, and pulled out a Mac-n-Cheese meal. She tore off the lid and popped it in the microwave. While she waited for it to heat up, she thought she'd call Diane.

Thankfully her phone was in her pocket and not in her purse. Pulling out the phone, she clicked Diane's speed dial and waited for her daughter to pick up.

"Hi, this is Diane!" Her daughter's voice rang out.

"Hey sweet hear it's -"

"I can't pick up the phone right now because I'm busy being awesome. But, as long as you're someone I know, you can leave a message after the beep and I'll call or text you back later. Bye!" The prerecorded voicemail was followed by a loud: "Beep!"

"Oh, um, Diane, honey," Daisy said, recovering from her surprise rather quickly. She had not expected to go to voicemail. Her daughter always picked up the phone. Well, except when she was at Baseball practice. "It's your mom. I just wanted to check in and see how things were over with April, May, and June...Call me back soon. I love you."

With that, she pressed the 'end call' button and looked back at the microwave. She stared at it, her mind wandering as she waited for her cheesy pasta noodles to heat up.

Why didn't she answer the phone? Daisy wondered. I know she's not playing Baseball...not after she was kicked off the team for fighting...

The beep of the microwave interrupted Daisy. Blinking, she pulled out her meal, mixed it up with a plastic fork, and started eating. It was just the right temperature, not too hot, and not too cold.

As she munched on her macaroni, she decided to call her sister, Donna, and contact her daughter that way. She pressed speed dial again, and waited as the phone rung.

"Come on, Donna," Daisy said, tapping her fork on the plastic Mac-n-Cheese container. "Pick up."

Shortly after she said that, her sister's voice came on.

"Hey, Daisy!" Daisy's older sister, Donna, said. She sounded pretty happy. "Long time, no call!"

"Hey Donna," Daisy said, feeling tired just talking to her sister. Donna was always a little more energetic than Daisy was. Her energy had no end - which was good considering she had three daughters to take care of. "Can I talk to Diane?"

"Pardon?" Donna asked, and Daisy rolled her eyes. Donna probably hadn't heard her because she was multitasking. Classic.

"I said, can I talk to Diane?" Daisy asked, making sure to state her syllables loud and clear, and stressing her daughter's name. "She hasn't answered her phone, so I thought I'd call you and contact her that way."

"Um, sis…" Donna said, her voice sounding concerned. "Diane's not - she's not here."

"Oh," Daisy said, gently rubbing her forehead. Diane was probably watching a movie with April, May, and June. "Well, when she gets back, can you have her call me?"

"Daisy." Donna said, "You're not listening - Diane's not here."

"But she's going to be back, right?" Daisy asked, sitting up. Something fishy was going on. "I mean, she went over to your place a few days ago -"

"No, Daisy," Donna said. "She didn't. I haven't seen Diane last Christmas. Isn't she with you?"

"Hold on," Daisy said, standing up. "I'm coming over."

"What - Daisy wait -" Daisy hung up before Donna could protest. Diane was not at Donna's...or so her sister said. Her daughter might be missing...or maybe Donna didn't realize Diane was at her house. One of the triplets would know. They had to.

(Slight Time Skip)

Daisy stepped out of the taxi and went straight for her sister's house. Donna was already outside, waiting for her.

"Daisy," Donna said, jogging over and hugging her sister. Daisy hugged her back, but she was quick to pull away.

"Are you sure Diane's not here?" Daisy asked, looking into her sister's eyes. "You didn't lose track of her or anything?"

"That was one time," Donna said, flushing. Once she had taken Diane to Ducky's Daycare, and had neglected to notice that the little duckling had crawled out of her stroller and was walking around the mall while she signed her in. "And yes, I'm sure she's not here. But you can check."

"Okay," Daisy said, heading for the door. She opened it, looking for any signs that Diane was here. Baseball bat, blue jacket - anything. But no such luck. "Diane!? Diane - are you here?"

"Hey Aunt Daisy," April said. She was sitting on the couch, not too far away, scrolling through something on her phone. May and June were over in the kitchen, and June had a cookie stuffed into her mouth. They both waved.

"Hi girls," Daisy said, looking meaningfully at each of them. "Do you know where Diane is?"

June started coughing on her cookie, and May gave her a little glare. April just shrugged her shoulders.

"Not since Christmas." She said, completely nonchalant. Daisy raised an eyebrow at June's reaction. June was not good at lying. She just - couldn't do it. May and April, however, were masters at it. "Why do you ask?"

"Because," Daisy said, meeting June's eyes. May tried to make June look away, but Daisy's eyes held her there. "She's missing and...she won't answer my calls. I don't know where she is, if any of you know - please tell me."

"Why would we know where Diane is?" May asked, shrugging her shoulders and stuffing a cookie in her mouth. June looked away, still chewing her cookie. May took a swig of a glass of milk and added. "I mean, it's not like we helped her escape on a bus for Duckburg so she could see her dad or anything."

"You what." Daisy said, more as a statement than a question. Her eyes grew wide with shock as the news sunk in. April groaned and rolled her eyes.

"May! You weren't supposed to say anything!"

"She guilt tripped me into it!"

"Then you shouldn't have looked her in the eyes."

"Girls," Daisy said, her voice stern and commanding. "Go get dressed and pack your bags. You're coming with me."

"What?" The three girls asked.

"But - but what about mom?" June asked, her mouth no longer full.

"She can come too -" Daisy looked at her watch. "You know what - nevermind about packing - come on. We're heading to Duckburg now."

"Now?!" The three girls asked.

"But we're still in our pajamas!" June protested.

"Speak for yourself," April said, lifting her head. "I'm wearing a nightgown."

"I don't care what you're wearing - we need to go now." Daisy said, using her mom voice. April, May and June looked at her, then at one another, and then back to Daisy. With a collective sigh, they got up and went to her. Daisy nodded her approval and shooed them out the door, locking it as she left. "Donna - come on, we're heading to the airport."

"The airport?" Donna asked, blinking. She hadn't moved from the sidewalk by the taxi. "Girls - what's going on?"

"We're going to find Diane," June said, and April gave a her a look. "What? She'd have found out sooner or later."

"Now?!" Donna asked, gesturing back to the house. "But what about my house - and Greg?"

"You can call Greg on the way there and let him know what's going on," Daisy said, pushing Donna into the taxi's passenger seat. The triplets were already in the backseat.

"Hey lady," the taxi driver, a crane, said. "I can't fit all five of you in here."

"Get out and let me drive." Daisy said, pulling out her press pass. She never went anywhere without it.

"Get real -"

"Listen - my daughter is missing - and if you don't let me drive this taxi to the airport right now - I'll make sure K-9 News hears the story of how a certain taxi driver hindered the search for a missing child. Your company wouldn't want all that bad press now, would it?"

"Fine." The crane mumbled, getting out of the car. "Just - don't dent her."

Daisy waved and hit the accelerator, going as fast as she could without breaking the speed limit. Thankfully she didn't' need to go too far to get to the airport - and thanks to her connections she was able to book a one way flight to Duckburg.

Hello everyone! Thank you all so much for the reviews! I know I said last chapter this chapter would be about Donald and Diane and chilli - but I brainstormed with via_is_a_person on Wattpad and created this chapter instead. Next chapter will be Donald and Diane and chilli - with Daisy and her posse interrupting (I cannot wait to write that chapter - the gears in my head are already turning). Anyway - till next chapter, stay safe!
