A little late, but still on time! Themusicmaniac here!
tompotter38: Yeah, Steelbeak is definitely one who doesn't care for kids. But in this series I am really interested by how he seems to be underestimated by all the other characters, and I really want to use that. The other dimension will be mentioned, but we have to meet DW first. And that won't happen until someone (or some two) try to break into the lab.
Guest: Thank goodness I get to write Gosalyn!
I wish you all the best this week, thank you for your reviews and follows, seeing those pop up make my day. Enjoy!
A good night's sleep is just what I needed.
Gee, what was I supposed to do today?
There was that paper on Nicomachean Ethics. I wanted to check out a sample that Sarah found at the lab. I turned over as I heard the echo of pots and pans in the kitchen.
The kitchen?
I jolted awake as I realized where I was.
I groaned and rubbed my forehead. Gosh, I'm still not used to waking up here.
"Oh, you're awake." Gosalyn came into the living room for a second. "I've got eggs and toast started in the kitchen, once you're ready."
"Thanks, Gosalyn." I said, carefully stretching my arms.
"No problem." She said, walking into the kitchen.
I set to work folding the blankets that I had made into a bed. After I was done, I went into the bathroom and washed my face and hands. I really needed a shower, but I wasn't sure… how to shower as a duck.
I looked in the mirror for the second time since I had been in St. Canard.
A duck face looked back at me. I had shoulder length hair that was loose, and my beak was an orangish yellow color. I looked in the mirror as I touched it, and turned around. I have a tail! I felt the end of it too. As strange as it was to be a duck, now that I was somewhat used to it, it wasn't uncomfortable."
I looked at my face once more before I deemed myself ready to head to the kitchen where Gosalyn had a bowl of oranges, cereal, milk, eggs and toast set out.
I smiled. This was the exact breakfast that Darkwing made for his challenge course that Gosalyn did with him.
"How are you feeling?" Gosalyn asked, taking the eggs from the pan and setting them on two plates.
"Better, now that i've had some sleep. Thanks." I sat down in front of one of the plates.
"What do you know about Taurus Bulba?" Gosalyn said, sitting down in front of me with her plate. She didn't waste any time did she?
"Not much. I was sitting in my dorm after my classes when I felt something pulling me. I looked behind me and saw a portal and was sucked in. The first thing I saw was Bulba looking for Dr. Waddlemeyer." Gosalyn nodded, seeming to think about something, but didn't say anything, so I continued. "He then noticed me, and I introduced myself to him. I learned I was in McDuck labs, which was confusing for me because of a show in my dimension that's similar to events like these."
Gosalyn interjected, "Grandfather had said that Solego had predicted that our own universe may be depicted in stories in other dimensions." She looked back up at me. "You should continue your story."
"Okay." I said, taking a bite of toast, "Well I had to learn how to walk because I was a duck now, and that's not what I am in my dimension. Bulba helped me walk to his office and offered me tea. It was drugged." Gosalyn's eyes widened but she said nothing. "I woke up in a locked lab and climbed into the vents. He went looking for me and sent FOWL after me."
"What's FOWL?" Gosalyn asked, drinking her glass of milk.
"The Fiendish Organization for World Larceny." I said, looking down at my plate. "He sent an Agent named Steelbeak after me. He also set up an appointment with Scrooge McDuck, presumably to show him the Ramrod in two weeks." I said, grabbing an orange from the table and peeling it. "So I finally found my way to the outside from the vents. But I was at least ten stories up. So I jumped and tried to use my jacket as a parachute. It didn't work and I landed in a bush and distanced myself to a nearby alleyway. That's where Bonkers found me."
"And you decided to go to my Grandfather's house?" Gosalyn asked. I nodded.
"Running from McDuck labs while the alarms blared didn't exactly look like an escape. He accused me of stealing, and I told him the truth. He didn't quite believe me so I told Bonkers that if your Grandfather was here, I would've been lying, right?"
"So you made your way here and knocked on my door at three in the morning?" Gosalyn said frustratedly.
"Yeah... But we were ambushed by Steelbeak on the way, so we had to be very careful about it." I said, finishing up the last of my orange. "But I'll have to admit that it helped confirm my story."
Gosalyn nodded. "Do you know anything else that could help?"
"He did imply that something about the Ramrod would be ruined if the public knew it's true nature."
Gosalyn was quiet for a minute before saying. "I believe you. I probably should tell my side of the story."
I nodded, and she started her tale.
"My grandfather built the Ramrod under Dr. Bulba. The last time I saw him, Grandpa had left to warn Bulba about a flaw in the programming."
"One that could bring unintended consequences or people into your dimension."
"Or destroy all dimensions completely! I checked his math. If we power up the Ramrod too much, we could cause the destruction of our universe!" I gasped as Gosalyn looked down at the table. "We have to get my grandpa back and find your home dimension before anything else bad happens."
"What should we do."
"I tried calling McDuck labs. It all went to voicemail. I tried calling the police on the second day. They filed a report but haven't done anything yet. Bonkers might be able to help us but my guess is that he can only do so much. It'll be up to us."
"Then let's make a plan." I said, as I heard the doorbell ring. Both of us jumped, and Gosalyn looked around the hallway.
"It's the mail." She went to go get it. I took the dishes and put them into the sink and started to clean up the kitchen.
"Hello Miss. Waddlemeyer. Have you been home alone for a few days?" I heard a voice from the other room and decided to check it out. A few people were gathered at the door, and I noticed a van parked in the driveway.
"Yes, but I have a family friend staying with me."
"We've been told that your grandfather went missing. And by law, you are now a ward of the state." My eyes widened as I knew what was happening. They were going to take her to an orphanage. Or foster care. Or-
"Well my grandfather told my good friend Valerie to take care of me if anything happened to me, so…"
"Well this form says he put you in Dr. Taurus Bulba's care." I felt the blood drain from my face. This could not be happening. She could not stay with him.
"Well then why didn't he show up here?"
"Uh…" The social worker was lost for words.
"If Dr. Bulba wants to take care of me, he should come here himself."
"But-"
"Bye!" Gosalyn slammed the door.
I closed the curtains and we both watched them leave.
"We really need to make a plan." I said, feeling faint.
"And we need to be prepared to fight." Gosalyn had a hardened look in her eyes. I knew she was ready to fight. But was I?
Gosalyn and I had cleaned up the kitchen and met in the garage.
"Okay, so first of all, we'll need to be able to fight." Gosalyn said. "I have a crossbow. What's your preferred weapon?"
"Hmm…" I said, going through every game I had played in my mind. I'm terrible at shooting arrows. I shouldn't carry a sword around. "Is there anything you have in mind?"
"Well, I've been working on a crossbow." Gosalyn said, "But it's been more of a personal project."
"I don't want to intrude on that." I said, picking up a masonry trowel that was sitting on the table.
"Wait, that's perfect!" Gosalyn said, picking up the box under it. "We just take the trowel, and this and…" She started using the trowel to fix up another type of projectile launcher. "And now for ammo…"
She was looking around the house for a little while, but found some projectiles in some acorns that were outside.
"Simple. Reasonably heavy. Environmentally friendly." I said, tossing an acorn up in the air and catching it. We had filled an entire jar full of them and put it on the top of the projectile launcher, but I had suggested using a plastic one for fear of breaking it. Gosalyn agreed.
Gosalyn had built a homemade handheld acorn launcher.
And it was perfect.
I wouldn't want to hurt anyone, but in a pinch, it may help me. I turned it over in my hands.
"Gosalyn, this is amazing. You really have a talent."
"Thanks." Gosalyn said, looking towards the floor. "It's kind of a hobby I picked up while helping my grandfather in the garage."
"I bet you miss him." I said, putting my projectile launcher on the table and sitting next to Gosalyn. She nodded.
"He's the only family I have."
"I'm sorry."
Goslayn looked like she was about to cry, but I saw her hold it back as she looked at me.
"What's the plan Valerie?"
The plan will come next week. See you then!
