Chapter 1 - The Beginning

Lucy Heartfilia is a normal teenager. A normal teenager who drinks, parties, goes to college, and watches Netflix. A normal teenager… A normal teenager in a world of absurdities.

It was about seven in the morning, as she climbed out of bed and slipped into her fluffy robe. She lived alone in an apartment just a few blocks away from Magnolia University, which was located at the heart of the town. Though the town itself was a pretty small area, Magnolia University was one of the most prestigious universities in all of Fiore.

Lucy smiled as she walked to the bathroom and brushed her teeth. Today was a big day! She turned nineteen exactly one week ago, meaning that her connection to her soulmate would be more powerful than ever before!

"I'm just going to trust my guts with this!" She exclaimed, washing out her mouth and skipping to the kitchen. Pouring herself a cup of apple juice and readying the cup of cereal (yes, it is always the cereal before milk), she sat down on the small kitchen table and scarfed down her food.

Stretching, she headed back into her room with a large smile… only to plop back into bed.

"Who am I kidding! As if I have a soulmate!" She groaned in agony.

"Alright, class! Remember to hand in your research papers by next week Friday. Good luck!" The Professor exclaimed. The bell rang, and the students stood up and were hurrying out the door, Lucy in tow.

She huddled off to her apartment once again, finished with her lectures for the day.

"Softly~ I'm Sorry~ My darling… " Lucy sang from her heart, remembering her mother's song. She hummed the tune, balancing herself on the stone blocks. Careful not to slip into the canal, she jumped off, entering her apartment building. Knowing she was late for her rent, she snuck into her room, softly closing the door shut.

"Maybe I should go to the carnival today instead!" Lucy dropped off her bag on her bed and grabbed a coat.

She turned around, and just as she was grabbing the soft material, a golden glint caught her eye. Turning, she saw the box she kept locked at all times on her bed stand. She was drawn to the box today, very strongly. The chest itself was created with a dark mahogany. Etched into the sides were the twelve symbols of the zodiac, Leo the Lion standing carved proudly in the middle as the leader of the group. The box, though years older than herself, looked brand new, as if it were freshly made a minute ago.

Lucy stared at the box. Why now, of all times? She'd been abandoned, with only Mrs Spetto taking care of her, for an entire 15 years. She was barely eighteen when Mrs Spetto passed away, leaving her alone.

"Lucy, remember, darling. The keys, this box and the song. Your mother never abandoned you, my girl. She loves you, I love you, and your family is waiting for you to return. Find them, Lucy." Mrs Spetto spoke on her deathbed.

Lucy was bawling as she witnessed the person she loved to the ends of earth pass in before her eyes.

Everything came crashing down on her.

Mrs Spetto's last words never, ever left Lucy's mind. Family? What family? The only one she ever had a heart-to-heart with in this wretched place was the reflection she saw in her bathroom mirror!

As if she'd ever have a family. It was a fairytale. Simply a far away dream she'd never be blessed with.

Dropping the coat she so tightly clutched, Lucy absent-mindedly trudged to the box, cracking it open. In there lay the beautiful golden keys.

"Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, and…. Aquarius." She fingered each key, holding them gently as to not harm them.

Wiping her teary eyes, she plopped the ring of keys into the pocket of her trench coat, not letting go of the warm glow they seemed to emit. She thought about the song again, and almost everything her mother left her.

'It's a weapon of great strength

A weapon of great power.

Yet it is so unattainable

As unattainable as it is real

As unattainable as its vigor

Still, so real that it can be felt

At the brush of innocent hands

At the shared gaze that lingers for a moment too long

At the small whimpers of their touch

But though it is impossible;

The small smiles

The tangled limbs

The tinkle of her laughter, and the furrowing of his brows

Is so much more powerful

That sometimes, they ask themselves,

Why do they yearn for this weapon?

Never realising

They've lived in it's mighty presence

All along.'

She couldn't decode it for the life of her; what was her mother (if she could call her one) talking about? Either way, she wouldn't give up to it, no matter what! She hardened her face and let out a fired up cry.

"I'm not going to let this get to me! Off to the carnival!"
