A.N. I feel I should explain a couple of things.
I'm Australian, not American, so I apologise in advance if I spell things differently/use different terminology than what you're used to. Feel free to ask for clarification if you're ever confused.
Since we're starting to get into the story and Sakura's telepathy is becoming more prominent, I'm using font to differentiate her thoughts from those of other people:
Italics = Sakura's thoughts
Bold Italic = other people's thoughts

Chapter 7
Rain poured from the sky. The Urameshi twins heard an audible squelch every step they took. They huddled under a tree and gazed around the forest. They'd managed to follow Gōki into the wooded area, but once the rain started they realised the task was going to be more difficult than they thought.
"Great," Yusuke grumbled. "This stupid rain's going to wash away his tracks,"
"Maybe so, but we're not licked yet," Sakura hunched down in her jacket. "Botan's on her way and from the sounds of it she'll have something that can help hunt him down,"
Yusuke pawed the ground with his foot and continued to look for signs of movement.
"Hey, what's that?" he muttered under his breath.
Sakura looked to where Yusuke was indicating. A little further off, she could see a lone beam of sunlight peeking through the thunderclouds.
"It's not raining there," Sakura murmured. "That's definitely not normal,"
"Squirt, I'm going to check that out. You should stay here,"
Sakura rolled her brown eyes. "Like hell I will. You need me,"
"Sakura," Yusuke turned to face his sister. He looked more serious than usual. "One, you're not a fighter like I am,"
"Says the crybaby who brought up the black eye that I gave him," Sakura retorted.
"Two, I'm the Spirit Detective,"
"And Koenma sent me along to help you!"
"And three, you're still injured. Wait here for Botan, ok?" Yusuke began to run towards the light.
Sakura shook back her sleeves. "Botan healed them quite a bit! And in case you've forgotten dimwit, you've already used your Spirit Gun today. I'm the one who can still use the Spirit Blast!"
"And you haven't even done that once, Squirt. Seriously, stay back!"
Yusuke was already out of sight. Sakura scowled. Of course he would just run head first into danger. Anything for a fight. Gritting her teeth, Sakura chased after him. There was no way she was letting anything happen to her twin.
As they'd suspected, the steady rainfall had ceased in this area. Sakura threw back her hood, even though her hair was wet. Reaching the clearing, Sakura hung back slightly and waited. Yusuke was nowhere in sight. She figured he must be lurking off in another area. Yes, he was bound to be pissed off if he knew she'd come after him, but that was a risk she was willing to take if it meant stopping him from doing something stupid.
A triumphant laugh broke the silence. "This is perfect!"
A rather small figure seemed to teleport through the air, slashing a lethal-looking sword with every move. He swung the blade into a huge tree nearby. It instantly disintegrated and revealed a red demon with wings. The hideous creature screeched a battle cry and flew into the air only to turn into stone once out of the sunlight.
The kneeling figure wielding the sword stood up from his crouching position. Now that he'd stopped moving, Sakura was able to get a decent look at him. It was one of the thieves Botan had shown her. She hadn't expected him to be so small. Even from where she hid, Sakura guessed he was about the same height as herself, maybe even shorter. Though his face wore a much brighter expression, there was no mistaking his identity. The black spiked hair, a white bandana around his head.
It was Hiei, and he was admiring the Shadow Sword.
"If the sword can make demons from trees, just think what they'll make from humans!" Hiei's voice had an air of excitement, not unlike a child being promised a large bag of lollies.
He pointed the sword at the shadowy figure before him. "I say we go to the next big city and carve out a thousand of them! Imagine raising an entire demon army!"
A gravelly voice chuckled. "I like the way you think, Hiei. If we teach them how to eat souls, I even know how we'll feed them all…" the speaker stepped into the light and pulled out a glowing green sphere.
"The Orb of Baast!" Gōki crowed.
Sakura shuddered. Hiei and Gōki were in reach, but there was still a third culprit.
What was his name again?
"And once the moon is full, we can use Kurama's weapon and supposedly get full control. Isn't that right?" Hiei turned to their unseen companion.
The mysterious Kurama walked forward into the light. Sakura slapped her hands over her mouth to keep from gasping out loud.
Kurama was even more attractive in person than the image she'd seen. His deep red hair perfectly in place, sparkling emerald-green eyes that shone out of his impossibly young face.
He looks like he's not much older than me. But how?
"Sorry," Kurama said in a voice much softer than she'd been expecting. "I must withdraw from this alliance,"
If Sakura felt shocked, it was nothing compared to how Hiei and Gōki reacted.
"What?!" they both hissed furiously.
"What is that supposed to mean?" Hiei snarled. "Surely you're not dropping out of the game when we've come this far?!"
Kurama's face betrayed no emotion. "Yes," he responded calmly.
"You coward!" spat Hiei. "Your years of hiding yourself in this human world has made you just like them: spineless and ready to be walked on!"
"I don't give a flip if he leaves," Gōki shrugged. "But he's got no right to the loot. Give us the pretty little mirror,"
"I can't," Kurama still hadn't shown the slightest hint of concern. "I have great need for it myself first, "
Maybe it was a trick of the light, but Sakura couldn't help noticing his eyes looked... sad. No, it was more than that. She saw an ocean of pain inside them, far deeper than she'd realised.
"All right," Gōki smirked. "Then I'll punch it out of you!" He swung his enormous hand towards Kurama, who didn't move an inch.
"Excuse me, neighbours," a familiar voice rang out and stopped Gōki in his tracks. All three demons turned in the direction of the newcomer.
Sakura facepalmed. Tell me that isn't who I think it is!
It was.
Yusuke sauntered out into the group. He was holding a tree branch that he'd presumably used as a makeshift umbrella and had his signature cocky smile painted on his face.
"Couldn't help but notice there's no rain falling here. Maybe the next time you guys go stealing some magic toys, you should hide where it's not so obviously sunny. Just a tip," he winked.
Sakura ground her teeth together. That idiot. Just has to walk out and announce his presence!
Hiei glared. "Who are you and how do you know about the artefacts?"
"Give us your name, " Gōki growled.
"Thank you, hoped you'd ask," Yusuke replied rather grandly. He dramatically tossed the branch away. "Hello, boys! The name's Yusuke. I'm a Spirit Detective,"
The only thing missing was the musical fanfare. Sakura bit her tongue to keep from laughing. Could her brother be any more of a dork?
Gōki looked confused. "Spirit Detective?"
"Don't worry, he's just one of Koenma's fools," Hiei sneered. "He must have been the only human they could round up. His Spirit Energy is pathetic,"
Kurama squinted ever so slightly at Yusuke. Then he turned and began to walk off without a word.
"Hey! Where are you going? " Yusuke called after his retreating form.
"Sorry, I don't have time to be arrested," Still with that maddeningly calm air, Kurama vanished into the distance.
"Stop Kurama! You can't just walk out on our plans! " Hiei roared. With a contemptuous glare at Yusuke, Hiei leapt into the air and disappeared.
"Hey, don't leave yet you guys! I just got here!" Yusuke called in mock disappointment. "So much for manners,"
Gōki laughed. "Don't feel bad, kid. I'm much more polite than those two brats. I'll turn myself in nice and neat, if I can't rip off your head!"
"Sounds like a deal," grinned Yusuke. "Just don't pull my hair,"
Gōki silently advanced on Yusuke, showing exactly how immense their size difference was. "But if you don't mind waiting, I need a little snack," he reached into his pocket and pulled out the Orb of Baast.
"What do you mean?"
"I find this Orb very useful. I never have to cook anymore," Gōki crowed, reaching into the Orb and pulling out what looked like white mist. "People don't realise how hard it is to eat human souls," he explained. "You gotta cook the humans so they taste good, but not enough to kill 'em. But this...it takes all the guesswork out of it! Pulls 'em from the body so all you get is good, clean soul,"
Sakura felt bile at the back of her mouth. Yusuke stared in horror at the soul Gōki clutched in his fingers. "Is that...is that the little kid?"
"They're the best!" Gōki smiled and popped the child's soul into his revolting mouth as if it were a piece of candy.
"Monster!" Yusuke roared. "Spit him out!"
He delivered a hard kick into the demon's stomach. Gōki retched, and the soul cloud began to emerge. With a yell, Yusuke sank his fist into Gōki's jaw, and the soul cloud was able to break free as Gōki crashed to the ground.
Yusuke straightened up, looking extremely pleased with himself. "And that's a knockout!"
Still hidden from view, Sakura breathed a sigh of relief. The little boy's soul floated high out of reach, and flew off in search of its rightful owner.
Yusuke watched with a small smile. "That's right little boy. You're safe now. Just fly on home to your body," He approached the fallen Orb and picked it up. "Two more to go!"
A whirring sound caught his attention. Yusuke spun around and jumped in alarm at the sight of Gōki on his feet.
"For a human, you're pretty decent,"
"What's your problem?" Yusuke glared at him. "Get back on the ground; I hit you too hard for you to be on your feet!"
Sakura looked at the gigantic demon. There was a mark on his face and some blood where Yusuke had got him, but he looked completely calm.
This isn't good.
Yusuke watched as Gōki let out a laugh as his body glowed with red energy. In a move not unlike the Incredible Hulk, his muscles bulged and ripped the shirt he was wearing. Horns sprouted from his head. His hair became long and unruly, and saliva dripped from the fangs he now had. He'd more than doubled in size along with this grotesque transformation.
"Uh...I think I'm in trouble," Yusuke's face would have been comical if the situation wasn't so dire. Without hesitation, Gōki swiped his monstrous hand, knocking Yusuke to the ground and leaving long slashes in his shirt. Yusuke raised himself up, still holding the orb. "Next time I see Koenma, I have got to ask him how to fight monsters!"
"Easy, kid. You run away," The monster ripped a massive tree from the ground as if it were a twig. He heaved it at Yusuke, knocking him off his feet.
Sakura looked around. Botan, where are you?!
She knew her telepathy was virtually nothing at this point, but she had to try on the off chance it worked. And it didn't.
Ok, think Sakura. Think. They don't know you're here, which means you have the advantage if things get worse.
She began to climb the tree she was hiding behind. Get to a higher point and wait for the moment to strike.
Yusuke had dropped the Orb in the fall, and as he reached for it, he paused and seemed to realise something. "That's right, the Spirit Gun thing…! Hey...it's not working...damn it, Mr Iwamoto screws me once again!"
It won't work, idiot! You can only use it once per day! Sakura crouched on the branch and waited for the opportunity to present itself. It was surely moments away.
Gōki was advancing on Yusuke without hesitation. "Do you know what the best spices for a soul are? Some fear and a dash of pain!" he roared with laughter.
I'm really gonna die. Again! Come on Yusuke, you'd better think of something quick!
Yusuke's thoughts burst into Sakura's mind. She could sense his fear. What could she do? Would jumping in just make things worse? And where the hell was Botan?
Sakura, you have to do something. Use the element of surprise! She told herself sternly.
Gōki looked Yusuke up and down. "That soul you let go was my dinner, and I'm VERY hungry!" he snarled. Again, he hurled Yusuke through the air. "I'll just have to eat you instead!"
"Then eat THIS!" Sakura leapt from the tree branch and kicked Gōki directly in the head. The monster bellowed in shock and clutched his face.
"Kura?!" Yusuke spluttered when he realised who had come to his rescue. "What the hell are you doing here? I told you to stay back!"
"I'm saving your ass," Sakura retorted. She took a defensive stance in front of Yusuke as Gōki recovered from the hit and looked about wildly for his assailant.
"You're the one who jumped on me? Who are you, girl?"
"Sakura Urameshi, Yusuke's twin sister. Give up now and I'll go easy on you," Sakura glared up at him, determined not to show her fear.
Gōki stared for a second before bursting into laughter. "You?! What's a tiny human girl going to do to me? Actually, come to think of it, twins do make an excellent meal," he took a swipe at Sakura, who leapt out of the way on instinct. "You're a feisty one," he smiled. "I wonder how you'll taste!"
"Kura, get the hell out of here!" Yusuke hollered. He lifted his beaten body up, but collapsed with the effort.
"Yusuke!" Sakura cried.
"Oh, I'd forgotten how fragile humans are," Gōki scratched his head. "Don't let me hit you too hard now! I mean, I'd hate to bruise the meat,"
"Don't you touch him!" Sakura's temper exploded, and that wasn't all. She raised her hands into a triangle, and shrieked at the top of her lungs. "SPIRIT BLAST!" Her hands burned with energy which she pushed out towards her enemy. Three magenta orbs shot from the triangle and launched themselves at Gōki. One after the other, they hit him in the chest.
Gōki howled. Sakura collapsed on her knees. She felt as if she'd just run a marathon.
Did... did I seriously just do that?
The demon stood up with slightly hunched shoulders. Sakura and Yusuke could see where Sakura's attack had singed his flesh, but nowhere near enough to take him down.
Sakura's heart sank. That's all I can do. We're done for. I'm sorry, Yusuke. I tried.
Gōki ran forward and delivered a kick that sent Yusuke flying into a tree, then grasped him by the hair and held him aloft.
"NO!" Sakura screamed. "PUT HIM DOWN!"
"Shut up, girl. You brought this on yourself. Don't worry though, you won't be away from your brother for long!"
Gōki lifted Yusuke higher off the ground, both gigantic hands wrapped around his neck.
"Come on everyone, I've found a clearing. We'll camp here for the night,"
Gōki froze and glared in the direction the voice had come from. Torch lights shone in the distance.
"Let's not sleep. I want to find that monster. My pack of big dogs are hungry,"
"What? I hate big dogs," Gōki muttered darkly.
"No, let's rest. I'm tired of carrying all these big weapons," The voices seemed to be getting louder.
That voice...could it be? Sakura hardly dared to breathe.
"Sorry kids, you're not worth a run-in with the local villagers so I'll have to let you live. Now be smart and stay away from me," he warned, carelessly dropping Yusuke to the ground and stalking away.
The voices were closer than ever. "Hurry up everybody, I think I see someone! He's right up there!"
Sakura was sure Gōki had finally left, so she crawled to her brother as fast as she possibly could. His eyes were closed and he wasn't moving.
"Yusuke? Yusuke!" she shook him. No response.
"Sakura! Oh thank goodness, I've found you!"
Sakura looked up, blinking raindrops out of her eyes. "Botan!" she gasped, letting the relief flood through her. "He's hurt!"
Botan dropped to her knees and examined Yusuke. "He's unconscious, but I think he'll be fine. What about you? Are you injured?"
"No, I'm ok. Just used up my spirit energy with one blast is all,"
Botan's eyes widened. "You can tell me everything later. We need to get you home. Come on!" she signalled for her oar. The two women heaved Yusuke onto it before hopping on themselves.
"Hold tight, and make sure he doesn't fall," Botan told Sakura as they took flight.
"This is our place," Sakura panted, sagging under Yusuke's dead weight. She knocked loudly on the door. "Hopefully Mother isn't too inebriated to let us in,"
"Give him to me," Botan said cheerfully. "I'll carry him,"
Sakura stared. Botan easily picked up Yusuke in her arms like he was a kitten.
The door opened. "Sakura? Where have you been? It's so late….YUSUKE!" Atsuko cried out. "What happened? How did he get like this?! Is he dead?!"
Atsuko then noticed Botan. "And who on earth is this girl?"
"Mother, he's ok, just got in a fight. Let us get him to bed and I'll explain everything, ok? This way Botan,"
Sakura motioned for Botan to follow her to Yusuke's room, where they laid him down on the bed.
"I'll get the first aid kit," Atsuko hurried into the bathroom.
Sakura stared after her. "We have a first aid kit?!"
Once Yusuke's injuries had been attended to, Atsuko fixed Sakura with her best attempt at a stern mother look.
"Talk, young lady. What's going on? Who's your friend?"
"Botan's my name!" The Grim Reaper cut in and spared Sakura from having to think of a good cover story on the fly. "I'm a recent transfer to Sarayashiki, so Sakura's very kindly been helping me study after school,"
"Odd, she hasn't mentioned that?" Atsuko looked skeptical.
"Mother, you've either been asleep or crying about Yusuke every time I've been home the past week,"
"That's quite enough out of you," Atsuko flushed slightly. "What happened to Yusuke?"
"He got into a fight on the way home," Sakura replied honestly. "But let's just say he was punching above his weight,"
"He'll be fine, Ms Urameshi," Botan trilled. "Come morning he'll be right as rain,"
"Well, alright," Atsuko didn't seem too convinced, but nodded anyway. "I'm going back to bed,"
After she left, Sakura slumped against the wall and slid to the floor. "Thanks Botan,"
"It's no trouble, sweetie. Now I guess we can talk properly. What happened?"
"Hang on," Sakura opened her eyes. Only now did she realise that Botan wasn't wearing her pink kimono... and she could be seen by humans? "How come my mother could see you?"
"Oh, I've taken on my human form so we can train better. Koenma's idea. Speaking of humans, you're completely soaked. Go dry off first. I'll stay with Yusuke,"
Sakura glanced down at herself. "Uh, sure. I'll be back,"
After a hot shower, Sakura returned to her own room and dressed in cotton leggings and an oversized t-shirt. She combed through her long black hair and pulled it into a low ponytail before returning to Botan. Where to begin?
"...I honestly thought we were both doomed. But then you showed up,"
"So it was your Spirit Blast that I saw. I was tracking you both, but those lights from your attack showed me I was heading in the right direction,"
"It doesn't matter, they weren't strong enough to stop him," Sakura shook her head miserably.
"Sakura, don't be so hard on yourself. If you hadn't stepped in, Yusuke would probably be dead now,"
"I suppose you're right,"
"Besides, I think your power was stronger than you realise. Didn't you say they were able to burn him?"
"A little bit, I suppose, but nothing major. I don't even know how I did it. That was the first time I'd ever tried it,"
Botan looked thoughtful. "Could it possibly be because you were overcome with emotion? That can affect spirit energy, you know,"
Sunlight began streaming through the curtains.
"Oh dear!" Botan gasped. "Morning already? I've kept you up all night!"
"It's fine, Botan," Sakura sighed. "I'm used to late nights,"
"Even so, I'm sorry Sakura. I'll go make you some tea,"
"I can do it,"
"I insist!" Botan danced from the room.
Yusuke bolted upright. "What happened to the forest?" Rattled, he looked around. "I'm in my room? Don't tell me that was all just a crazy dream… "
"Nope, it was real," Sakura deadpanned from the end of his bed.
"Huh? What's going on Squirt? "
Atsuko appeared in the doorway. She dropped the tea towel in her hand and approached the bed. "Yusuke, you're up! Are you alright?"
"I think… OW!"
Atsuko smacked Yusuke over the head with all the strength she could muster.
"MOTHER! You don't just wallop an injured person!"
"You look like you've been fighting with a wrestler!" their mother snapped. "You're going to get yourself killed!" She dissolved into tears.
Yusuke looked slightly panicked. "Don't do that Mother, it's OK!" he turned to Sakura, who was watching the scene with amusement. "At least I think it's OK. Who was that voice?"
"Who do you think?" Sakura indicated towards the door.
"Come on, you know!" the pretty blue haired visitor giggled and waved. "Hello!"
Yusuke stared in disbelief. "Wow Botan. You saved me?"
"Yes she did, brought you back home asleep in her arms. She's very strong," Atsuko said fondly.
Yusuke nearly fell out of bed. "She… what… can other people see you now?" he whispered to Botan who had come closer.
Botan nodded. "I told Koenma I'd make a much better assistant to the Spirit Detective if I had a human form and he agreed,"
"Makes sense, I guess, " Yusuke still looked dazed.
"It's lucky for you that Sakura's tutoring Botan. Who knows how Sakura would have gotten you home otherwise."
"Tutoring?" Yusuke looked more bewildered than ever.
"Yusuke, you'll have to introduce me to this lady properly soon," Atsuko winked from the doorway. "I'll go make some tea, "
With their mother gone, Yusuke rounded on Sakura. "I told you to stay back, Squirt! What the hell were you thinking, taking on Gōki like that?!"
"I think I saved your life," Sakura replied coolly. "If I hadn't gotten the jump on that monster he would have killed you before Botan arrived,"
Yusuke glowered. "It was still dangerous. Anyway Botan, how did you find us? I didn't even think we knew where we were,"
Botan smiled and pulled out what looked like a watch. "Nothing too special. I just used this compass to find Gōki,"
"What is that?" Sakura asked.
"A Demon Compass. Detective item 2 of 7. It indicates the distance and direction of an already identified demon," Botan recited as though in an infomercial.
Yusuke looked curiously at the device. "This'll make finding them a lot easier, but my real problem comes once they're in my face," he muttered. "Gōki was a lot stronger than I thought, "
Botan's face fell. "The next two thieves will be even stronger. And there's another catch. Koenma didn't tell you this, but you only have one week,"
Yusuke didn't look up from the floor. "Why does that not surprise me,"
"I should be encouraging you," Botan admitted. "But…"
"I know, I know, the odds aren't good,"
"Not necessarily," Sakura piped up. "He might be stronger than you but that doesn't make him invincible. He seems a bit dim, to be honest. Ruled by his stomach. There's got to be a way to outsmart him if we play it right,"
Atsuko had turned on the TV in the lounge room. The news headlines caught Sakura's attention.
"And now continued coverage on the spreading epidemic in Grey Corner, "
"That's close by," Sakura said sharply.
"Four children from this quiet forest town have fallen comatose in the last three hours. Doctors are hesitant to pin a cause on their conditions, but say it is unlike any disease they have encountered before. Town officials are advising families to stay inside,"
"No… " Sakura growled.
"Sounds like Gōki's having his lunch," Yusuke frowned.
"In the past, he's taken souls much more slowly. With the Orb of Baast it's much easier. He can take all he wants,"
Sakura felt sick at the thought of those poor kids. "That monster. He has no right!"
"The souls he eats," Yusuke looked directly at Botan. "How long until they're digested?"
"It's hard to say...one day at the most,"
"Fine," Yusuke pulled on his clothes.
"What are you going to do? What can you do?" Botan almost sounded nervous.
"Simple," Yusuke slammed his fist into his hand. "I'll just rip open his stomach,"
"You're not even recovered yet!" Botan reminded him.
"There's a lot of things that I don't understand, Botan. But isn't it better for a person to lose their life than their soul? They can't even become a ghost! And I'll give up my body before I let that happen,"
Sakura took a step back from her twin. There was a fire about him that she'd never seen before. Honestly, it scared her a little. His eyes were bright...were those tears?
"Yusuke…" Botan seemed lost for words.
Yusuke took aim. "I haven't used my Spirit Gun today," he muttered. "This time I won't let him win,"
"I'm coming too," Sakura said firmly.
"No, you're staying here," Yusuke glared at her in warning.
"Absolutely not," she said coldly. "We're in this together, and might I remind you that I can use my Spirit Blast too?"
"You're still injured, you damn brat!"
Sakura held up her forearms in front of Yusuke's determined face. "Look," she told him. "No more burns. Botan's healing powers worked," It was true. Yusuke stared in amazement. Sakura's arms were virtually back to normal. Aside from a slight redness, there was no trace of the burns she'd received in the house fire.
"...Ok, fine Squirt. But you have to be careful. I'm not going to let anything happen to you, no matter what,"
"I can take care of myself," Sakura groaned. "And for the love of all that's good and holy, don't run into this fight without thinking of a plan first! Preferably one that doesn't involve the 'hit hard and think later' tactic. Think deeper!"
Botan nodded solemnly and handed another item to Yusuke. "This might help. It's a Spirit Concentration ring. I was supposed to save this item for when your spirit energy got much stronger. It will give your spirit gun a huge punch, but afterwards you'll be completely exhausted. Only use it as a last resort,"
Yusuke twisted some dials on the compass. "You got it. Kura, I have Gōki's energy. Let's go take care of this creep,"
In the forest, a tiny girl politely handed the glowing green sphere to the large man in front of her. "You dropped your ball, Mister,"
"You're a sweet girl. You'll be even sweeter in my stomach," The Orb of Baast glowed and sucked the girl's soul from her open mouth. Her eyes went blank and glassy as she crumpled to the ground.
Gōki chuckled and patted his belly. "I'm starting a little collection. See, children? It's not so bad. You can all play together in my stomach!"
"Hey Gōki! I came all this way to see you," Yusuke emerged from the woods and stood before him without a trace of apprehension. This infuriated the monster.
"Idiot!" he blustered. "Didn't you listen to what I told you yesterday?"
"Yeah, of course I heard you. I'm just stupid,"
Instantly, the sky turned red. Gōki morphed into his true demon form. "You're becoming a pest,"
"Then what happens when a second pest shows up?" Sakura appeared behind Yusuke.
"You again? Sounds like you're both as stupid as each other!"
Sakura looked behind their opponent. Lying on the ground behind him was the Orb of Baast.
"Yusuke," Sakura muttered. "I'm going to grab the Orb and distract him while you power up the Spirit Gun. You only have one shot, so make it count,"
"And if it doesn't work?"
"Throw me the concentration ring and I'll fire my Spirit Blast. But hopefully it won't come to that. I know you can do this. Just think. There has to be some part of his body that's vulnerable!"
"Ok Squirt. Do your best,"
"What are you two brats whispering about?" Gōki growled. "Trying to think of some way to beat me? Good luck with that!"
"Thanks," Sakura and Yusuke said simultaneously.
Gōki clenched his fists and stood over Sakura. "You're going first, Missy. That feisty attitude is sure to make you extra tasty!"
Use your size to your advantage. He's strong, but you're quicker. If you can get close, try to grab the Orb!
Sakura kicked Gōki in the shin, as hard as she could. It couldn't possibly have hurt, but he seemed surprised at the power behind it and took a step back.
Now's your chance!
Ducking under his legs, she zigzagged across the grass, and snatched up the Orb. "What's wrong? Too scared to fight a girl?" she teased.
Gōki turned his head and bared his teeth. "I'm not scared, but I'm sick of you! No more messing around! Wait...where's that damn Orb gone?"
"Looking for this?" Sakura waved it in front of her.
"Think fast!" Yusuke barrelled forward and punched Gōki's stomach.
The demon laughed. "For a detective, you don't know much. Soul-sucking ogres like me have rock-solid skin. You can't hurt me!"
Yusuke gritted his teeth and jumped out of the way as Gōki aimed a retaliatory punch at him. The force of the hit snapped the tree where Yusuke had been moments before clean in half. Yusuke picked up the fallen trunk and threw himself at Gōki.
"How about a big wooden stake?!" he thrust the giant log at the demon's stomach, to no avail.
Gōki raised the tree up as Yusuke hung onto the other end. "Don't you see it's pointless?" he snarled. He hurled the wood through the air and Yusuke was slammed to the ground.
"Yusuke, it's no use! You have to think outside the box!" Sakura called. Amidst her fear and panic, the wall in her mind crumbled and Yusuke's thoughts rang in her head.
All out of choices. I have to use the Spirit Gun. Ok, what if I shoot him in the eye? He'll be blind, right? Wait, he's got two eyes!
Gōki's next kick sent Yusuke tumbling through the air again, but that wasn't all. The ogre crushed his enormous foot into the boy's back, making him scream in pain. "You're giving me a bigger appetite. There's something about those screams of pain!"
"Yusuke, no! Get off him!" Sakura dropped the Orb and raced forward, charging her Spirit Blast. But before she could let the energy fly, a blue haired figure jumped in front of her.
"Sakura, look out!" Botan pitched a thick branch at Gōki's back with such force it splintered on impact.
Gōki paused his torture of Yusuke and turned very slowly to look at who had joined the fight. "Who the heck is she?"
Botan stood with her mouth open, trembling from head to toe.
"Forget about her, she's nobody!" Yusuke yelled.
Botan began running away, towards Sakura. Gōki leapt into the air and cut off her escape route.
"Merry Christmas!" Sakura shouted. "Spirit Blast!"
A single magenta ball collided with the back of the monster's head. With Gōki momentarily distracted, Botan was able to switch directions and ended up behind Yusuke.
"Hey, you big freak! Don't you want your precious Orb?!" Sakura held it up.
"After I eat all three of you. Which will be easier now you two are standing together," he grinned and approached Yusuke and Botan. He seized Yusuke by the hair and pulled him up to eye level. "Starting with my top offender!" He opened his mouth wide.
Sakura looked on in horror. "No, don't do it!"
Just then, Yusuke's arm slashed through the air. When the movement ceased, Sakura could see the thick branch her brother had managed to wedge inside Gōki's mouth.
"It's about time," he panted. "I was waiting for you to open up your big, fat mouth!"
Gōki no longer looked intimidating. Instead, his eyes were full of terror and shock.
"The skin on you monsters may be hard as a rock, but I bet your insides aren't!" Yusuke slipped the concentration ring onto his hand. His index finger began glowing with Spirit Energy.
"Monster, meet Spirit Gun!" Yusuke roared. Without hesitation, he aimed and fired. The force of the blast lit up the forest and went right through Gōki's head. Sakura was knocked off her feet and she shut her eyes tightly against the glare. She couldn't see, but she could hear Gōki's screams, and a final crash as his body fell.
Sakura heard Yusuke sigh. She cautiously opened her eyes. Yusuke was on his knees, Botan beside him. Gōki's body glowed and a collection of Spirit clouds floated into the air.
"One, two, three, four, five," Yusuke counted quickly.
"You saved them all, Yusuke," Botan said in relief. Yusuke laughed briefly. He sounded exhausted.
"Sakura! Are you ok?" Botan hurried to Sakura's side.
"Yes, I think so. Just a few scrapes," She allowed Botan to help her stand. "He did it. Those children are all ok," she smiled wearily. "Go help him,"
Botan returned to Yusuke and supported him while he got to his feet. Sakura brought the Orb over. "One down, two to go," she grinned. "You were amazing, Yusuke,"
"Nearly lost my head to get that one artefact back," he panted. "I'm scared to think what two more of them will take,"
"Hey, you're not alone in this. We'll find a way," Sakura squeezed his arm. "We should get you home and make sure Mother doesn't see you. She'd have a heart attack,"
"Thanks, Kura," Yusuke gave her a tired smile. "Couldn't have done it without you,"
"Yusuke, can't you just admit it'd be easier to lean on my shoulder?" Botan asked anxiously.
Yusuke stopped hobbling on the stick he was using as a crutch. "Right, can't you admit it'd be embarrassing?"
"Leave it, Botan," Sakura sighed. "If he wants to be a tough guy and make his injuries worse that's his choice. It's not worth the argument,"
Botan shook her head. "If you insist,"
Yusuke's expression changed from suppressed pain to one of alarm. His compass had started beeping wildly.
"What's up?" Botan asked sharply.
Yusuke scanned the crowd. "One of them is here. If they try to fight us, we don't stand a chance. We've both used our spirit weapons today,"
"There!" Sakura spotted the target. Long red hair, a face that could have been sculpted from marble...
"It's Kurama," Yusuke tensed up as the demon approached.
Sakura stepped forward. "What do you want?"
"Don't worry, I have no intention of fighting you," Kurama said calmly. "Nor do I intend to flee. In fact, I've come to ask you a favour,"
"Are you crazy?" Yusuke hissed.
"Give me three days. After that I will gladly return the Forlorn Hope to you,"
Without changing facial expressions or even looking them in the eye, Kurama melted into the crowd.
"OUCH! OK!" Yusuke yelled. He flopped back on the bed and massaged his stinging arm. "More alcohol and I'd need a designated driver," he growled.
"You know this could be a trap, Yusuke," Botan ignored Yusuke's tantrum and set the first aid kit aside. "It seems a little too easy,"
Sakura leaned against the wall. Her mind was racing over their encounter with Kurama.
"It's no coincidence that he asked for three more days," Botan went on. "By then, the moon will be completely full and the powers of the Forlorn Hope will reach their maximum. When that happens, the mirror will reflect the strongest desire of whoever looks into it. And it is said the desire will be granted, though the user must give something in return,"
"Do you know what?" Sakura asked without looking up.
"No. Only a few people know what that something is," Botan replied. "Getting our mirror may be pointless if his wish destroys the earth,"
"But it sounds like he could do that by himself, right?" Yusuke reasoned. "Why would he go out of his way to meet me?"
"That's a tough one," Botan admitted.
"I don't know," Yusuke said thoughtfully. "Something tells me I should trust him,"
"What in the world are you saying?" Botan gasped. "Let's not forget that his dear old teammate tried to rip you into little bits!"
"When I was walking up, they were having some sort of argument," explained Yusuke. "And I don't have a clue why, but Kurama told the other two he was leaving. Something in his eyes...he looked more sad than evil," He fell silent, remembering.
"I wish I knew more about this guy," Botan muttered.
The solemn atmosphere in the room was broken abruptly as Atsuko entered. "Hey! I've made us some dinner! Will you be eating with us, Botan? There's plenty of food,"
"Oh yes, that'd be lovely, thank you!" Botan sang.
"Ugh! Can't you knock, Mom? We're in the middle of an important conversation!" Yusuke snapped.
Atsuko rounded on him. "Hey! What kind of conversation can't be held around your mother?"
"Well, uh…" Yusuke stammered. "I-it's not what you think Mom!"
"What happened to Keiko? I thought she was your girlfriend?"
"I don't have a girlfriend!" Yusuke protested.
"Ignore him, Mother. We'll be at the table in a few minutes," Sakura called.
Atsuko sighed. "At least one of you has manners," she muttered and left the room.
"Something on your mind, Sakura?" Botan asked curiously.
"I... I agree with Yusuke. About Kurama, I mean. I don't get the sense that he's evil. And I saw him leave the alliance. Like Yusuke said, he just looked sad when we tracked them down the first time. If he wanted to kill us, he could've just done it in the street,"
She turned and looked out the window into the night sky. "I think there's something else going on,"
"Wow Squirt," Yusuke said in awe. "You're on my side? Wait...you just think he's cute, don't you?" he teased.
"That's not what I'm saying!" Sakura blushed furiously. "I'm just saying that we might be able to give him the benefit of the doubt is all,"
"Anyway, let's go eat," Botan chuckled nervously.
"You guys go ahead. I'm not very hungry," Sakura mumbled.
Ignoring their questioning eyes, Sakura went into her room. She sat at her dressing table and began combing out her hair. What was the matter with her? Why was she so quick to trust this perfect stranger, no, this demon, who'd stolen an exceptionally dangerous weapon? He was a criminal. They were master manipulators.
She set the brush down and dropped her head into her hands. Was she just being naive? She was so sure of what she'd seen in the forest.
Sakura crossed the room and flung open the window for some fresh air. She breathed deeply and gazed up at the stars. The gentle breeze was calming.
It's not your problem, Sakura. She thought to herself. You have to be there for Yusuke.
Sakura glanced down at the street below. She hadn't yet appreciated the view from her new window. She scanned the nearby buildings, admiring the pretty lights.
A shadowy figure on a nearby rooftop caught her attention. Sakura couldn't make out who (or what) it was, but the sight made her skin crawl. She had a nasty feeling that whatever it was, they were watching her.
Hello Miss Urameshi.
Sakura jumped as this new voice emerged in her mind, though it was one she recognised.
I'm very sorry, I didn't mean to startle you. Forgive the intrusion into your mind. I only did it because I deemed it absolutely necessary.
Sakura stood completely transfixed, staring up at the shadow she now knew to be Kurama.
I could sense your fear when we crossed paths in the street earlier. I merely wish to assure you that I have no desire to harm your brother in any way. He will return safely, I give you my word.
Even if Sakura had been able to respond, she seemed to have lost all sense of communication with the shock of knowing a demon was speaking with her via telepathy.
I suppose that's all I need to say. Thank you Miss Urameshi. Your brother is certainly lucky to have you.
Kurama's voice faded. Sakura blinked. His silhouette was gone from the roof. She clutched the window sill, wondering if that had really happened.
Don't be stupid, of course it was real. You know that! You wrestled an oversized troll doll today!
Sakura slammed the window shut but turned quickly at the sound of someone knocking at her bedroom door.
"Kura? You ok in there?"
"Uh, yeah!" Sakura stuttered, almost tripping over her own feet in her haste to open the door.
Yusuke and Botan looked at her with concern. "Is...something wrong?" Botan asked carefully.
"No, not at all!" Sakura squeaked, plastering a smile on her face. "So what's the plan?"
"Uh...well...I guess I'm going to see Kurama," Yusuke shrugged.
"Oh cool!" Sakura said a little too quickly. "Say, Botan! D'you think we can do some telepathy work at some point like we talked about yesterday?"
"It's a little late for that now, but I'm sure we can schedule it in," Botan nodded.
"Ok, cool, I'm going to bed. You should too, Yusuke. You almost died today. Again! Night!"
Sakura shut the door, flicked the lights off and jumped into bed. Her heart was pounding. She peeked over her blankets at the window, half expecting to see Kurama's face. His beautiful, youthful face…
Stop it! She commanded herself. Get a grip, Sakura. You're letting your hormones get the best of you. You'll be giggling like a moron if you don't pull yourself together.
She rubbed her face vigorously. How do you know Kurama was even telling the truth? You really expect a thief to be honest? He could be trying to get your guard down. He might try to use you against Yusuke…!
The thought made her blood run cold. Her stomach churned. Her twin could be walking into a trap...
Her door opened slightly. Yusuke peeked inside. "Squirt? Are you sure everything's ok? You seem kind of...wound up,"
Sakura stared at him. "Uh…"
Yusuke shut the door and sat on the end of her bed. "You know you can talk to me, right?"
Sakura bit her lip. "What if...what if I told you that I'm worried you might be getting sucked in?"
"You mean by Kurama?"
"I...I think I just saw him outside. I think he knows where we live," Sakura's voice was rising with anxiety. "What if he's lying about returning the mirror? What if he's just luring you into some diabolical scheme? What if he tries to use me to get to you? What if…"
Yusuke took hold of Sakura's arms and held her firmly. "Sakura," he said evenly. "Calm down. I'm a big boy, I can take care of myself. Plus I have my detective items, Botan, and you. There's nothing to worry about,""
"Yusuke...I...I'm scared. I don't want to lose you again. I can't stand the thought of you leaving me." Sakura's eyes sparkled with tears.
Yusuke laid a finger over her lips and locked eyes with her. "No matter what happens, you'll be ok Squirt. You're strong. But seriously, I think you're overreacting. As for Kurama - or anyone else - trying to use you to get to me, I'll never let that happen, got it?"
Sakura nodded slowly. Yusuke gave her a gentle punch in the shoulder. "No more tears. Now why don't you get some sleep? You look like you need it,"
"Gee, thanks," Sakura said sarcastically. Yusuke ruffled her hair and closed the door on his way out.
Sakura sank back into her pillows. It had been a bizarre day, but she had a feeling this was just the beginning.
The next morning, Botan had reverted from her human form. Floating on her oar, she looked at the twins soberly.
"I'm going to see if I can get more information on the Forlorn Hope from Koenma. Yusuke, you go to your meeting with Kurama, and please be careful, ok?"
"Right, right, I'll be walking on eggshells," Yusuke said dismissively.
"In the meantime, Sakura, you'll be coming with me to Spirit World. There's someone there who is most eager to train you,"
Sakura did a double take. "Say what now?"
"Koenma contacted me this morning. Apparently one of the telepathy masters in Spirit World has taken interest in you and has offered to help you work on your abilities,"
"But I can't go now," Sakura argued. "Yusuke needs me!"
"Go on Squirt!" Yusuke rolled his eyes. "I'll be ok. You need to get that telepathy thing of yours under control. It can only be a good thing,"
"Don't worry, there's broadcasting screens throughout Spirit World," Botan reassured the girl. "You'll be able to keep an eye on Yusuke from up there,"
Sakura hesitated for another moment, but she finally nodded. "Please be safe," she said seriously.
"I will, promise, cross my heart, you know, all that. Just go already!"
Sakura leapt onto the oar behind Botan and it floated into the air. She watched Yusuke walk away as long as she could.
"So Botan, who is this telepathy master?"
"Don't make me spoil the surprise!" Botan laughed. "But I promise you, you'll be learning from the best!"
In spite of herself, Sakura couldn't help grinning with excitement. Her brown eyes had a look of determination. "Let's hurry then. Spirit World, here I come!"
