A.N. Here we are, after five days of almost non-stop writing, Chapter 26 is here for you all to enjoy.

Hina714: You're right, Sakura's stubborn but determined, and between you and me that's almost certainly going to get her into a wold of trouble moving forward. And yes, Yusuke still isn't keen on letting Sakura fight. Both twins are flawed, but together they make a great pair. Without giving away too much, nobody's going to be happy with Toguro soon. I'm considering OCs for Sakura to fight. It might end up being a combination of the two. Hope you enjoy this action-filled chapter.

Wolfs child/Damaged Forest Spirit: Thankyou! Hope you enjoy. I'm writing Chapter 27 right now.

Chapter 26

Yusuke stared down the Toguro brothers. "So I guess this is the big finish,"

"I can't wait!" Kuwabara said excitedly.

In the observation room, Tarukane was sweating bullets. "Hey! Toguro, don't blow this!"

The Black Black Club laughed. "Poor Tarukane. He's going to have a conniption before this is finished," one said.

"Can't blame him," another pointed out. "It's not often that your whole financial future is bet on one match,"

Kuwabara glared at the screens. "Hey, who are those people? They're watching us risk our lives like it's funny!"

"Remember what Kura said?" Yusuke muttered. "They're Tarukane's pals and they're betting on who wins,"

Botan looked revolted. "It's awful,"

"Ah, grow up. It's called business, kids!" Tarukane laughed. "And why are there only three of you here? Where'd that other broad go?"

"What do you mean, 'broad'?" Yusuke shot back. "You better not be talking about my sister!"

"Oh, she's your sister. Makes sense," Tarukane grunted. "So she chickened out? Can't say I blame her. Those little whores are always scared of the big players,"

Yusuke clenched his fists. "Shut your face! Kura could kick your ass any day of the week,"

Tarukane folded his arms and smiled in a way Yusuke didn't like. "Is that so?"

"Yeah!" growled Yusuke. "She could do it with her hands tied behind her back,"

Tarukane's piggy little eyes glittered. "That can be arranged, boy,"

Kuwabara reached out to prevent Yusuke charging at the crime lord. "Ignore him, Urameshi. Sakura can take care of herself," he gestured to the Toguro brothers who were waiting patiently. "We need to beat these guys first,"

"If we get tired, please allow us to tap out," Younger Toguro still hadn't removed his shades. Elder Toguro giggled.

"Don't listen, Urameshi. I got a feeling these guys are up to something,"

"No joke," Yusuke glowered. Once the Toguro brothers were taken care of, he was looking forward to introducing Tarukane to his Spirit Gun.

Kuwabara looked slightly skeptical. "But judging from their spirit energy, we shouldn't worry. They're weaklings,"

"No, wait!" Yusuke shook his head. "I can't really explain it, my whole body's getting this weird vibe. It's like there's something big in here,"

Kuwabara blinked. "I don't feel nothing,"

"Ready brother?" Younger Toguro smiled. He held out his arm and Elder Toguro clambered onto it. With a shrill cry, he stripped off his jacket and raised his arms. His whole body seemed to mould like clay.

Kuwabara flinched. "What's that little guy doing?"

"I bet he's really popular at parties," Yusuke deadpanned.

"You see, my brother's able to transform the shape of his body. It's nothing really," Younger Toguro explained. The trio just realised what Elder Toguro had become.

"He just turned into a sword!" Kuwabara yelped.

"This is my brother's specialty," Younger Toguro smirked. "And mine?"

He roared, and like so many demons before him, Toguro's body expanded to terrifying proportions.

"Further, my spirit energy surrounds my brother and makes him indestructible. You see, the Toguro's truly fight as one. Can you say the same about yourself and your twin, boy?"

"Botan, get back," Yusuke said quietly, then gritted his teeth. "Don't talk about my sister, scum," He couldn't shake the feeling that Sakura was struggling emotionally that moment.

Kura, please be safe.

Jorge looked curiously at Koenma, who was leaning forward on his desk and staring intently at the screen. "Do you need a back rub, Koenma sir? You seem tense,"

Koenma didn't reply.

Jorge paused, then asked hesitantly. "Yusuke can beat them, right?"

Koenma leaned in closer. "Well…probably not," he admitted. "But then, I've only seen them fight once, and that was many years ago,"

Kurama was silent. Sakura had gone after Yukina alone. But where was Hiei?

Be careful, Sakura. You can do this.

"Hold it right there, young lady!"

Sakura's hair flew as she whipped her head around. Two very human security guards were racing in her direction, much like the tokage had at the school…

STOP! Don't think about that. You MUST focus! Save Yukina!

"Hey there boys," she grinned. "What can I do for you?"

Guard One seized Sakura's arm. "You're coming with us,"

"No thanks," Sakura spun around. "Spirit Blast!" And just like that, Guard One was down for the count.

"What the…?" Guard Two reached for Sakura, but she was ready. With a spirit-powered foot, she kicked him straight into the wall. He shook his head, then got up and went for her again..

Just like Yusuke does!

Sakura ducked under his outstretched arm, sending spirit energy to her hands and feet. She clasped her hands together, forming them into one fist and brought them crashing down on his back. A fountain of saliva flew out of Guard Two's mouth. Sakura kicked the back of his legs and finished off with a blow to the side of the head. The guard fell heavily on the ground, looking dazed. Sakura stood over him as he rolled over and glared at her.

"Impossible. You're just a little girl. How are you this strong?" he spat, barely conscious.

"I lift," Sakura said coolly. "Now tell me where I can find Yukina,"

Guard Two ground his teeth. "Not a chance, you little bitch,"

"Oh, ouch," Sakura said sarcastically, and pressed her still-powered foot into his chest. Just like Kyap did…NO! Stop!

Sakura blinked a couple of times, determined to stay afloat. "Let me rephrase that. Tell me where Yukina is right now or I'll show you the true meaning of pain,"

The guard looked furiously at Sakura, but couldn't hide the slight fear in his eyes. "What could you possibly do?"

Sakura summoned her spirit orbs to her hands and bounced them around. "Keep pushing me, you'll find out!" she growled.

"...Fine! She's in the observation room with Tarukane. Happy?"

"Thanks for the help. I can find my own way there," Sakura smiled and slammed his head into the ground. As soon as he was unconscious, Sakura's knees finally gave way and she slapped her hands over her mouth. She was almost retching, completely sickened by what she'd just done.

A horribly familiar laugh filled her mind. "Poor little Sakura Urameshi, in a moral dilemma," Tora chuckled.

"Look," Kyap snickered. "She acts so sanctimonious when she's being kicked around but given the chance, she uses the very tactics we did. Nice to see you paid attention, sweetheart,"

Sakura was back in Suzaku's chambers, wrists restrained to the bed. Kyap was pinning her legs into the mattress while Natchi ripped her t-shirt with his filthy claws.

"Listen to that whining. And you were acting so brave before," Natchi purred, and moved towards her jeans."Are you scared now, you little brat?"

She could feel Natchi's hot breath and the wetness of his tongue at her ear. "Being tied up suits you. Suzaku will like it. But first, I'm going to enjoy this. I'll enjoy hearing you scream,"

Nobody had heard what he whispered to her, and they were words she'd never repeated to anyone.

Just then the door was kicked in…

Kura, please be safe! Yusuke's panicked voice brought Sakura back to her senses. She was hyperventilating. It was true. She had used similar tactics to those mercenaries. What did that say about her? Was she really no better than the tokage?

Yusuke? I…I don't know what to do…the flashbacks…

Look, Squirt. I don't know what's going on with you right now, but I believe in you. You're bigger than those flashbacks. You can do this!

Enough! At last, Sakura was able to gain enough control to pull herself out of the memory. It's just a flashback, a stupid flashback. You were defending yourself. Those monsters are dead. They can't hurt you anymore.

Sakura took a deep breath and forced herself to stand. She knew where to find Yukina. The observation room. Almost certainly where the last fight was taking place. Now it was simply a matter of getting there.

Yukina. Talk to me.

Yukina's voice was still hesitant. Sakura? Is that you?

Yes. I need to get a lock on your energy so I can find you.

No, Sakura. You can't. I won't let anyone else die because of me. Yukina sounded sadder than ever.

We won't, I promise. I've been held against my will. I know how scared and hopeless you must feel. Please, let us help you.

Yukina hesitated. Well…alright.

That was all Sakura needed. Yukina's energy was coming through loud and clear. Now she knew where to go.

Yukina, I'm coming for you.

Toguro barrelled towards Yusuke and Kuwabara. He slammed his sword into the ground so hard that pieces of the arena floor went flying in all directions. The boys grabbed Botan and jumped out of the way.

"Spirit Sword!" Kuwabara's weapon surged to life.

"Too slow!" Toguro crashed his blade against Kuwabara's, both pressing down on the other. Toguro took advantage of Kuwabara's momentary distraction to swing a punch at the boy. Kuwabara noticed in time and jumped back at the last second, but the force of the punch sent him straight through the wall. He fell out of the imprint and onto the ground, coughing up blood.

"No!" Yusuke roared.

Toguro smirked at Kuwabara as the boy struggled to his feet. "You managed to step back just enough to avoid a fatal blow. I'm surprised you had enough intellect to do that. But you won't have to scrape along the floor for much longer. Come now, brother. Let's send him to Spirit World," Toguro's outpouring of spirit energy surrounded him, but he didn't notice Yusuke coming at him from the side.

"Hey! Forgetting something, stupid? Spirit Gun!"

Toguro jumped out of the way, aiming to attack Yusuke from above, but the Spirit Detective was unafraid.

"Maybe I didn't make myself clear. Shotgun!"

Toguro's energy shield easily deflected the blast. "Yes, he must think quite low of us, brother. As if we can't deflect a little energy,"

Damn it. Guess there's just one good way to stop him. Yusuke dashed to Toguro, dodged the slash of his sword and jumped up to meet his eye level. "How about point blank? Spirit Gun!" Yusuke's attack went directly into Toguro's face. Tarukane was incensed. Botan and Kuwabara cheered. Yusuke landed on the ground. "Don't worry, I hear headless is in this year,"

The smoke cleared but Toguro was standing completely unharmed. Elder Toguro had transformed into a shield which had blocked the Spirit Gun. With a smirk, Toguro socked Yusuke in the face and he was flung several metres backwards.

"Did I forget to tell you?" Toguro said smugly. "My brother makes an excellent defensive weapon," He approached the boys slowly and cracked his knuckles. "I was only being a professional. Though I was hoping you'd provide me much more entertainment than this!"

Despite the pain, Yusuke was profoundly grateful Sakura was nowhere near this fight.

Hold on, Yusuke. I'll be there soon.

In Spirit World, Koenma shook his head hopelessly. Yusuke and Kuwabara were thrown around the room by Toguro who was beating them mercilessly with everything he had.

"They're not going to make it, are they?" Koenma moaned to Kurama.

"You're certain it's them?" Kurama asked. "The brothers?"

Koenma folded his arms and shuddered. "I'd never forget that face,"

"Yusuke is not ready for them," said Kurama.

"Well of course he isn't. No-one is!" Koenma snapped. "Now why hasn't Hiei shown up? Not that he could put a dent in the Toguro brothers either…where are you going?" the toddler suddenly noticed Kurama leaving the room.

"I don't belong here," Kurama said simply. "Voyeurism has never been my strength. Excuse me,"

Jorge watched him leave. "I wonder where he's going, sir,"

Koenma rolled his eyes. "Over to Tarukane's stronghold, idiot!"

"Oh…can he get there in time to save Yusuke?"

"At this point, that might be impossible. I just hope he can save the human crooks from Hiei,"

Koenma didn't voice his other hunch aloud, but he strongly suspected Kurama had other reasons for going. Reasons involving a pretty, dark-haired human girl.

Almost as if he knew what Koenma was thinking, Jorge turned back to the screen. "Do you suppose Miss Sakura will be able to get to Yukina before Hiei does?"

"I'm not concerned about Sakura, Ogre," Koenma snapped. "She's only up against a couple of humans. But if Yusuke is killed, she'll certainly go after Toguro, and that wouldn't end well for anybody,"

On the other side of the estate, someone else had just crossed the threshold, and looked up from the security guard who now lay unconscious on the floor, the gun he'd brandished uselessly cast aside.

Hiei glared at the man with contempt for a moment, and looked down the corridor. His Jagan eye would lead the way to Yukina.

But one glance from the Jagan revealed a figure he recognised also headed in that direction. Her? What in the world is she doing here? Is she going after Yukina herself?

The Jagan seemed to think so. Hiei shook his head, half with annoyance and half with amusement. What did that foolish girl possibly think she could accomplish? Last time she'd barely made it out alive, and once again the detective had let her out of his sight. It appeared those two hadn't learned, and likely never would. But there was no time to ponder. The demon knew where he had to go, and soon the human who enslaved his sister would pay.

Be strong, sister. I'm coming.

Sakura's heart was pounding. Yusuke was in trouble. She could feel it. Hold on, Yusuke. I'll be there soon.

There was no answer. Everything in her wanted to run back to Yusuke, but she needed to save Yukina. Get Yukina first, then help Yusuke. Hiei could be here any second!

The worried teen raced through the halls of the mansion, following Yukina's energy signal. She was close, but gaining access to the room would be the next obstacle to overcome. As Sakura reached the door, one look was enough to tell her it wasn't going to open easily. Trying to break through the door would garner unwanted attention, and would almost certainly put Yukina in danger. But Sakura could already see an alternative route. The door to the observation room was sealed tightly, but the vent next to it wasn't. The cover of the shaft had come loose, likely from the shockwaves of the battle. Carefully, Sakura moved the cover over a little more and hauled herself inside the vent. She slowly crawled forward doing her utmost to avoid making noise. Through the grate, the viewing window was wide enough for her to see Toguro kick Yusuke in the stomach. He landed on the other side of the room, coughing up blood.

"Let…him go!" Kuwabara had clearly suffered similar treatment to her twin and was struggling to move, let alone talk.

Yusuke! NO!

Kura, stay out of this! Get Yukina!

Inside the room, Sakura could see Tarukane eagerly watching Toguro beating up Yusuke and Kuwabara, which turned her stomach. "Feel free to take a little extra time with him, Toguro! I know how all you demon creatures are into torture. Besides, my Black Black Club could use some good entertainment!"

Still in the clutches of the two security guards, Yukina turned away, clearly trying not to cry.

Tarukane grabbed Yukina's face. "Hey, why aren't you looking, baby? I know it's the way that you like it. Humans getting killed because of you. Just like that last one," he said slyly.

Sakura caught a glimpse of Yukina's anguished face and suddenly the ice maiden's memories filled the girl's mind…

Tarukane's hideous face grinned down at Yukina. He was holding one of the cards that adorned her cell window. "My people told me these talisman cards can burn the skin right off an ice apparition with just a friendly little touch. Let's try!"

"Get away!" Held by two guards, a terrified Yukina struggled to evade him. "Please, stop!"

Smiling, Tarukane seized her wrist and slowly pressed the card onto her skin. Yukina cried out as she was burned.

The crime lord laughed. The sound of her pain brought him great pleasure. "Put the cards all over her cell. That'll keep her from going anywhere,"

Alone in her prison, Yukina received a visitor. "I've brought you some food,"

The ice maiden glanced up. The young man who set the tray down had a kind face. Since she'd been taken from her people, nobody had looked at her with such genuine concern.

"You're not going to be in here forever, Yukina," he smiled. "You know, I've got a little sister back home who's about your age now,"

"Our chance has come. Tarukane's left the country on a trip. Most of the guards are gone,"

Time had passed. Yukina's friend was trying to convince her to escape.

Yukina shook her head. "We can't. You'd be in great danger. What if they caught you?"

The young man grasped her hands and spoke firmly. "Come on! Can't you think about yourself for once?!"

The two of them ran down the front hallway and were almost at the door when three figures appeared. Tarukane, shouldered on each side by guards armed with guns.

"Let's show this boy what we do to traitors," Tarukane smirked.

The young man threw Yukina out of harm's way, and she was forced to watch helplessly while he was murdered in front of her. Tarukane's henchmen showed no mercy, shooting again and again, long after his life had ended. Yukina's only ally was dead, and from that moment on she knew there was no hope of escape.

Sakura couldn't even breathe, let alone move. The world around her went blank. Yukina.

Laughing, Toguro walked over and picked up Yusuke by the collar. "Tarukane is wrong. I don't like torture. At least, not when they're too pathetic to even defend themselves,"

Sakura felt the impact from her vantage point and she suddenly remembered what was happening. Yusuke. He needed her.

Yusuke! I'm coming to help! Sakura began sliding back out of the vent.

Kura, I told you to get Yukina. I don't want you anywhere near these guys!

You need me, Yusuke. I'm watching this all from the vent. I can't sit here and watch you die!

Stay where you are, Kura. It's safer, I mean it! Tarukane doesn't know you're coming. He thinks you got scared and ran off.

Sakura was torn. Would jumping into the fray only put Yukina more at risk? But if she saved Yukina, would that be at the cost of her twin brother and two friends? What in the world was she supposed to do?

"Disgraceful!"

Sakura's attention was momentarily diverted. Kuwabara had risen to his feet, glowing with an aura of spirit energy.

"And you call yourself a man? Seeing you live makes me sick!"

Toguro considered Kuwabara with a small smile. "Interesting. Your spirit power has increased greatly. You'll be much more fun than this boy," he threw Yusuke aside. Botan ran to him.

"Get lost!" Kuwabara dismissed Toguro with a wave of his hand. "I'll have to deal with you two freaks some other time. I was talking to Tarukane!" Judging from Kuwabara's reaction, he'd seen Yukina's memories as well.

Tarukane looked highly amused at Kuwabara's threat. "What, you want to beat me up?" He burst out laughing. "Sorry kid, but I'm too expensive. Toguro, I want this creep fried extra crispy!"

Toguro looked at Kuwabara and shrugged. "You heard him. We have no choice,"

"Get out of my way!" Kuwabara charged forward, Spirit Sword at the ready, but with the help of his brother Toguro easily deflected the blows from the sword and knocked Kuwabara back. But the boy was still on his feet.

Toguro glared. "Your attacks are very slow. We can predict your every move,"

"Hey, Urameshi," Kuwabara muttered to Yusuke. "I need a favour,"

Tarukane pounded the desk impatiently. "Ok, Toguro. You've had enough fun. I want to start collecting my money!"

That was it. Angrier than ever, Sakura raised her foot and prepared to kick the other vent aside. She knew what she had to do, it was simply a matter of timing. Tarukane was finished. The only potential issue was them going for their guns. But if she was quick, she could easily take down those two guards holding Yukina with her double blast, and that third one wouldn't be a problem. Then she'd turn her fists on Tarukane. As long as Sakura had anything to say about it, that vile human would feel all the pain he'd caused Yukina, and then some.

Any second now. Just wait…

"It's too dangerous," Botan protested. "Let's wait!"

"You know how fast they move. This will only get you killed quicker!" Yusuke added.

Kuwabara's face was twisted in fury. "You haven't seen what I have. You don't know what they've done to her! Please!"

Yusuke. Apparently Sakura was listening. Do it. I'll get Yukina out.

Yusuke smiled. Kick his ass, Kura. "Fine," he said to Kuwabara. "I've got your back,"

Kuwabara stood, sword raised. "Are you ready?"

Younger Toguro observed the boys. "They want to die with honour. We will respect their wish!"

Kuwabara barrelled towards Toguro, sword out in front of him.

Toguro prepared for the final blow. "The battle ends here!"

"Kuwabara, here it comes!" Yusuke's Spirit Gun hit Kuwabara in the back and propelled him forward. Kuwabara tilted his sword vertically and the force of Yusuke's energy rammed the blade straight through Toguro's stomach. Sakura flinched. A fatal wound if she ever saw one.

The demon was stunned. "A genius plan…you fighters…are truly something," he gasped out and keeled over.

"What just happened?" Tarukane screamed.

On screen, Sakyo smiled. "Simple, old friend. You lost the bet. I believe that's sixty-six trillion, fifty billion and two hundred million you now owe me,"

The Black Black Club began to laugh and jeer. "Well, I know that you founded the Black Black Club. However, I'm afraid we can't associate with poor men,"

"Bye! Have fun standing in the breadline!"

Enraged, Tarukane cut the feed.

"Ok Sakashita. Move to Plan B. Start the chopper and make sure Yukina's with us. Nobody's going to shut down Gonzo Tarukane!"

Now! Sakura kicked the grate out of the wall and leapt to the ground. "You're not going anywhere,"

"What the…you?" Tarukane gasped. The two security guards holding Yukina drew their guns.

Sakura's face twisted in anger. "Double Blast!" her attack hit both fools square in the face and they went down like lead balloons. Sakashita ran up behind Sakura to restrain her, but a simple spin kick soon took care of him. With only Tarukane left, Sakura advanced slowly on the crime lord as the door flew open to reveal Hiei. He crossed the room in the blink of an eye.

"The game's over, you ugly fool," he snarled.

Damn it! Sakura pulled Yukina out of the way and held her close. There was going to be bloodshed. "You're safe now, Yukina,"

The tiny apparition was shaking all over. "Are you Sakura?"

Sakura nodded. "No-one will ever touch you again," she vowed.

Hiei only had eyes for Tarukane. "I saw the talisman cards hung in the tower. That explains why I couldn't find her with my Jagan eye. But you can't run from death forever,"

Tarukane backed up against the wall. "Wait!" he spluttered. "I don't know who the hell you are, but if it's money you're after, we can talk!" He pointed a trembling finger at Yukina, who clung to Sakura in fear. "Listen here. That broad behind you makes jewels you wouldn't even believe! I could pump millions from her!"

"Wrong answer, genius," Sakura sighed.

With an expression of murderous rage, Hiei punched Tarukane into the observation window with such force the glass cracked. Hiei then struck Tarukane again and again with his fists. He seemed to grow angrier with every blow.

In the arena, Botan looked up and saw what was happening. "Oh goodness, Hiei!"

"Hiei's here?" Yusuke glanced over. His eyes widened when he noticed Sakura protecting Yukina.

Sakura, you have to stop Hiei! Botan told her frantically and turned to Yusuke. "We have to do something. Regardless of what Tarukane deserves, Hiei is forbidden to take human life! He'll be punished severely!"

"Perfect!" Yusuke grumbled and slowly stood up.

Sakura sprang forward. "No, Hiei!" Barely even looking at her, Hiei threw Sakura backwards and resumed his assault on Tarukane. Sakura hit the wall and fell to the ground.

"Sakura!" Yukina hurried over.

Kura! Are you ok?! Yusuke was horrified.

I'm fine. Worry about Hiei!

"Stop it, Hiei!" Yusuke yelled desperately. "Don't kill him!"

Hiei glared menacingly at Tarukane, who was now bloodied and bruised beyond recognition. He dragged the man up to eye level and raised his fist to end it all. "They're just afraid of justice!"

Sakura made a move towards Hiei, but someone else got there first.

"No!" Yukina caught Hiei's arm. "Please, no more. I beg of you!"

Hiei stared at Yukina in furious disbelief. "Are you crazy?! Is this not the man who tormented you and made you his slave?!"

"He is," Yukina's eyes were sparkling with tears. "I have to bear that. But taking his life can't wash away all that he's done to me. It will only bring more pain. Just more nightmares,"

Sakura got to her feet and placed a hand on Yukina's shoulder. She didn't say a word.

"Please, no more," Yukina begged. "I can't take it!" Her tears clattered to the floor as hiruseki stones.

At last, Hiei relented. "Understood. I won't make you cry. He's too worthless for that,"

Yukina released her hold on Hiei's arm and turned to Sakura. "How can I ever thank you?" she said weakly. "All of you?"

"There's no need, Yukina," Sakura said quietly. "The important thing is that you're free from Tarukane now. It's over. You're no longer a slave to him or anyone else,"

"Sakura…" Yukina threw herself into Sakura's arms.

Hiei looked curiously at the sight. Strange. Why should a human girl be a comfort to an apparition?

After a moment, Yukina moved her head and gazed at Hiei. "You seem…familiar," she whispered. "But I'm not sure why. Who are you?"

Hiei looked momentarily alarmed, but his features quickly smoothed out into his usual indifference and he looked down at the arena floor. Yusuke and Botan made their way over to an injured Kuwabara, satisfied that things had settled enough in the observation room.

"No-one," Hiei muttered. "Just a member of the team,"

"Oh no!" Yukina gasped. "I have to help them!" she hurried from the room. Sakura stayed where she was.

Hiei looked at her with annoyance. "What?"

Sakura hesitated. "You didn't tell her,"

"And neither will you," he turned away. "But tell me this. Why would you, of all people, have sympathy for a demon?"

"What difference does it make if she's a demon?" Sakura shook her head. "She needed help, and I wanted to help her,"

Hiei still didn't look at her. "Even after every ordeal you've been through with demons, you still wanted to assist?"

"Yukina's not the one at fault for that!" Sakura said hotly. "And what happened to me has nothing to do with it anyway. I wanted to do the right thing,"

The demon finally faced Sakura and looked at her for a moment. "The right thing…" Suddenly he scowled at something in the corner. "How long have you been standing there? Long enough, right?"

"I guess I didn't need to come here after all," a familiar voice said.

Sakura turned around so fast her neck nearly snapped. "Kurama!" her face split into a huge smile.

How wonderful to see you, Sakura. Kurama smiled back. "Why don't you want to tell the girl, Hiei? She deserves to know she has a brother,"

"She deserves to be happy," Hiei said quietly. He gave the first genuine smile Sakura had seen on his face. It was almost unnerving.

Kurama laughed slightly. "I thought the two were the same,"

Still smiling, Hiei shook his head. "This is the way I want it," He felt a small hand on his shoulder.

"Hiei, I…" Sakura was gazing at him in wonder, amazed both at what she was doing, and also stunned that he didn't shake her off. Sakura couldn't move for a second. There was a new look in Hiei's eyes. Exactly what it was, she didn't know for sure. But it seemed a wall between the two had shattered and they were meeting for the first time.

"Go to your brother, Sakura," Hiei said haughtily, turning away.

Sakura glanced at Kurama, hesitating. Kurama nodded, and finally Sakura followed after Yukina.

Like Sakura, Hiei was just as surprised. The earnest look in the human girl's eyes should have irritated him, but instead it seemed to warm his cold heart. For the first time, he saw her properly. He'd never truly appreciated her beauty. Large round chocolate brown eyes, long lashes, pale lips, petite frame, shiny black hair. Not only that, her compassion for his sister and himself was unexpected.

"Strange," he muttered to Kurama. "The girl truly is a puzzle,"

Kurama watched Sakura run to Yusuke and throw herself into his arms. He smiled. "She is,"

Yusuke ruffled Sakura's hair. "Everyone's ok. But what about you?"

"I'm fine," Sakura mumbled. And it was true. From what Yusuke could see, she only had a couple of scrapes. He sighed with relief.

Yukina was kneeling beside a more seriously wounded Kuwabara. "Stay still. I can use some of my power to heal your wounds,"

Yusuke put his arm around Sakura and glanced at Botan. "Hey, let's see what's happening upstairs,"

"Huh?" Botan blinked, but quickly cottoned on. "Oh yes, of course. Good old upstairs!"

You big softie! Sakura teased.

Yusuke merely smiled and squeezed her tighter as they entered the observation room. He looked at the four unconscious bodies. "Wow, we've got a full house, huh?"

"Hmph!" Hiei walked out without another word.

Kurama approached the twins. "Yusuke,"

"Didn't expect to see you here, Fox Boy," Yusuke smiled.

Kurama chuckled and turned to Sakura. "You certainly did a number on these guards. I doubt they ever suspected you would be such a formidable opponent,"

Sakura flushed slightly. "They deserved it,"

Yusuke cleared his throat loudly. "Forget these low life thugs. Now what?"

Clearly, having a conversation around your brother isn't feasible. Kurama chuckled.

Sakura sighed internally. I'm sorry. I really am.

There's nothing to be sorry about. He simply wants to protect you. Frankly, it's a quality I greatly admire.

Sakura's heart was pounding. I-I know. But… She hesitated, knowing that what she was about to say might backfire horribly. I'd, uh, like to get to know you, Kurama. Outside of missions. I mean… if you'd like that too, of course!

Kurama's green eyes shone. I would, Sakura. I would like that very much. But perhaps we can discuss it afterwards?

Sakura's knees went weak. Great! Sure. That's...super cool.

"I'm sorry," Yukina said tearfully. "You were hurt because of me,"

Kuwabara grinned stupidly at Yukina, but his face fell when he saw the burn mark on her arm. "Your burn. You got that from Tarukane. I saw it. I'm the one who should be saying sorry. For not saving you earlier," He hung his head. "You probably hate humans, don't you? I don't blame you for it. There's lots of stupid humans out there. Heck, most of the guys I know. But…but there's some good ones too!" he said desperately. "Don't hate us! I can show you the good side!"

Yukina looked at Kuwabara with wide, stunned eyes. He could see that they were brimming with tears and he turned away in shame.

But she gently touched his arm. "Don't worry," Yukina looked up to the observation room. Sakura was visible through the window. "Really," Yukina looked back at Kuwabara with a smile. "I like humans. Very much!"

Sakura pulled her jacket closer against the falling snow. Yukina wrapped her tiny arms around Sakura's waist.

"How can I ever thank you, Sakura? And Yusuke?"

Sakura hugged her back. "I'm just glad we were able to help,"

Yukina grasped both Sakura's hands and looked at her seriously. "This isn't goodbye," she vowed. "I will see you again, Sakura. I promise,"

"I know," Sakura smiled. "And I can't wait,"

Kuwabara stepped forward. "Yukina, wait! I just don't get it. Do you have to go?"

"Yes, I must," Yukina said softly. "Clearly ice apparitions are meant to live in the world of ice," she smiled at the group. "Thankyou for everything you've done. You're so brave,"

At last, Yukina walked off into the blizzard. She was finally returning home. Kuwabara ran a few steps after her, then fell back.

Yusuke nudged Hiei. "There goes your last chance, Hiei. You really going to let her just walk off like this without knowing the truth?"

"It's not important," Hiei said flatly. "She and I have different mothers. We're only half siblings. There's really no point in telling her,"

"Hiei, that's just silly," Sakura shot back. "She's been locked up for five years. Don't you think she has the right to know she has a brother?"

Yusuke nodded. "Exactly, and weren't you looking for her?"

"I'm a rogue and a convicted criminal," Hiei looked straight ahead. "Even you have had to come and capture me. Do you think she'd be happy to know that her long-lost brother is a felon? It's best to watch her from a distance,"

The twins exchanged a look. They were both thinking the same thing.

Yusuke hesitated. "So…is that why you had that third eye implanted? To see her?"

"Nonsense," Hiei looked at Sakura for a minute, then turned on his heel and walked away.

It's so sad. Sakura's throat was too tight to speak. Siblings…need each other.

Yusuke squeezed her hand. I know, Kura. I know.

Kuwabara's new gloomy demeanour did not go unnoticed by his gang, but they couldn't figure out why.

"Something's really come over him," Okubu said. "I bet it's his new image,"

Komada shook his head. "I bet he saw a new movie and now he's acting it out,"

"No way!" Miyamoto giggled. "I say Kuwabara got rejected by a girl!"

"Bullseye, Miyamoto!" Yusuke cheered.

"Now wait just a minute!" Botan frowned. "Kuwabara was not rejected!"

Yusuke raised an eyebrow. "Well what else do you call it? Yukina ran back to the ice world,"

"It's a long-distance relationship!" Botan was all starry-eyed. "It's romantic!"

Silently, Kuwabara walked away followed by his gang.

"He really is down," Yusuke muttered.

Botan nodded sadly. "Not every closed case comes with a happy ending. I've heard Hiei still refuses to tell Yukina that he is her brother, too. But it's not all bad!" Botan added. "You killed the Toguro brothers and saved Yukina. And Hiei was kept from killing Tarukane. I would've hated ordering you to arrest him,"

Yusuke shook his head. "Give me a break; that would've sucked,"

"And that is precisely why there was so much debate in Spirit World about telling Hiei. He's considered a very valuable asset now. We decided the safest bet was sending him with the tape, to keep him distracted!" Botan smiled proudly.

Yusuke snorted. "Are all you people in charge of Spirit World stupid? What if he looked at the tape? Ever think about that?"

"But he didn't! So there!" Botan laughed. "I have to go fetch Sakura. Enjoy your shopping!"

Yusuke jumped. "Shopping?! What do you mean?"

"Hey Yusuke!" Keiko waved from outside a fashion boutique. "You're late!"

Yusuke's face fell. Where's Kura when you need her?

Instead of learning anything new, Master Shinsuke insisted on revisiting all they had worked on thus far. Sakura didn't question it, but something seemed slightly off. She'd expected Master Shinsuke to ask about the mission, but he didn't mention it at all until the end when they were sipping his signature tea.

"I saw what happened in the mansion," Shin began slowly. "Seems like you and Hiei have a new connection,"

"Not really. His door still won't open for me," Sakura closed her eyes. Just thinking about Hiei made her uneasy. She hadn't forgotten the way he'd been looking at her since the start of the case. And now she didn't know how she felt about him either. She should hate him, but honestly now her emotions came down to something more closely resembling pity. That wasn't all she was feeling. There was an emptiness now. She missed Kurama. She missed Yukina. And she still didn't know how to reconcile her nightmares with her actions against those humans in the mansion.

"It will in time, I am sure," the old man said calmly. "In any case, you did well. I am very proud of you,"

Sakura looked down. "I don't know if I deserve that, Master,"

Shin looked concerned. "Whatever do you mean?"

Sakura's hands shook so badly her teacup rattled. The sentient plants gently took it from her. "While I was fighting some of the guards, I had a flashback of the t-tokage. It was so real. I could hear their voices in my head, telling me that I was no better than them,"

"A complete and utter lie," Master Shin shook his head firmly.

"Is it, though?" Sakura said hopelessly. "Who am I to decide whether violence is right? How is it not ok for those demons to attack me, but fine if I do the same to a couple of humans?"

Master Shinsuke held up a hand. "That's quite enough. I refuse to let you go down this rabbit hole. It is altogether unhelpful. You did nothing wrong, and you know it in your heart, even if your head hasn't gotten there yet," He stood up, robes flowing. "Let us leave it there for now. I shall see you at our next lesson,"

Numbly, Sakura got to her feet. "Yes, Master," she mumbled.

"Sakura!" Master Shinsuke called as she reached the door. "I know you are confused, dear girl. And I'm afraid there are no simple answers. But I do know this. You did excellent work today," he smiled. "Keep practising hard til our next lesson. It will be alright,"

Sakura smiled faintly. "Yes sir. I will,"

As usual, Jorge was waiting just outside the door. "Come along, Miss Sakura," He led Sakura back to Koenma's office where Botan was gushing to Koenma.

"Here I am, with another successful case from my best project," she said proudly. "Oh, and here comes one of them now!"

Koenma smiled at the screen showing Younger Toguro lying motionless with Kuwabara's Spirit Sword sticking out of him. "Thankyou, Botan. You're priceless,"

Botan's grin became a frown. "I must admit, I was about to give you a couple of black eyes. Seems like you're always putting Yusuke up against people he shouldn't be able to beat, just to see what will happen,"

"That's just a result of your inexperience, Botan," Koenma said cheerfully. "You underestimate his true potential. Isn't that right, Sakura? I'd never put Yusuke in a fight he couldn't win,"

Botan was astonished. "That's incredible, sir! You knew all along?"

"You bet!" Koenma laughed.

At that moment, Jorge returned carrying a tiny black tuxedo and a scroll of paper. "Koenma, sir. What should we do with the black suit and eulogy I wrote for Yusuke's funeral?"

Sakura turned slowly to glare at Koenma, who gulped and tried to laugh it off. "Well, you know…good leaders always have to take a few precautions!"

Botan was the first to act. She hauled Koenma out of his seat and yanked him up to eye level, furious. "Big liar!"

"Well, come on now, everything turned out good in the end, didn't it?" he spluttered.

Sakura crossed her arms and got right in the toddler's face. "Is that right?"

Koenma quelled under Sakura's murderous look, but everyone's attention was diverted as another ogre ran into the room brandishing a tape.

"Sir! About the Toguro brothers. It's unbelievable!"

Botan dropped Koenma. "What?"

Sakura looked up sharply. "Come again?"

"Sorry sir," the red ogre said sheepishly. "We accidentally left the tape running after the battle and…there's something you should see,"

The footage showed the empty arena, after they'd all left. Kuwabara's sword disappeared, and everyone watching gasped as Elder Toguro regained his form, and Younger Toguro stood up, alive.

Sakura's face went white. Oh no…

"What?! What is this?! They're supposed to be dead!" Koenma shrieked.

"Be quiet, sir!" Jorge ordered.

Sakyo appeared on the screen overlooking the arena. "Excellent performance, Toguros. You almost had me fooled,"

Younger Toguro shrugged. "We have excellent hearing. Once we overheard the boy's plan it was simple to play along. Though I was afraid I was going to kill them both before I could fake a believable loss,"

Tarukane had regained consciousness and was laughing hysterically in the observation room. Younger Toguro barely glanced at him.

"I hope you don't mind me letting the ice maiden go. I didn't see any good reason for making her die. Who knows. Maybe you'll want to profit off her tears someday,"

Sakyo smiled. "That's fine. The apparition is of no consequence to me now, not when I think of all the money our great plan will be affording me,"

"We're so glad that our client is pleased. Now my brother and I have a little favour to ask in return. Please give us an opportunity to fight those boys again. This time, seriously,"

Sakyo puffed his cigarette. "But of course, Toguro. They will be two of the most anticipated guests in the Dark Tournament,"

Toguro smiled faintly. "I should have known all along. Extorting Tarukane's fortune was only half your plan. You wanted to see the competition,"

Sakyo laughed. "You're very perceptive. So tell me what you thought of their powers,"

"That Yusuke Urameshi is very intriguing. He lacks the fighting experience but could be a dangerous weapon,"

"It's a shame you didn't get to fight his twin sister," Sakyo said wistfully. "According to my sources, she's a telepath. Quite a force to be reckoned with,"

Toguro jerked his head. "The only use she will be is as leverage," he said darkly.

"Maybe…" Sakyo purred. "The competition will be held in two months, so you better make sure you're ready. Oh, and take care of the mess upstairs before you leave,"

The screen flickered out. The Toguro brothers turned their attention to Tarukane who appeared to have gone quite mad.

"I'm ruined," he giggled insanely. "Bankrupt…might as well be dead!"

He never saw what was coming up behind him, and if Sakura hadn't witnessed it with her own eyes, she'd never have believed it. Younger Toguro kicked through the glass, and Tarukane's hideous head was knocked clean off his shoulders.

This freak was after her brother. With a horrified moan, Sakura slid to the floor.

"Sakura!" Botan knelt beside her. "What are we going to do, Koenma? They're after Yusuke!"

"Yes…" Koenma twitched nervously. "And they will no doubt entice him to fight in this competition!"

"But you know how these fights will be!" Botan said desperately. "And Sakura…"

Sakura slowly sat up. She still felt quite faint. "Yusuke. Take me to him. Now,"
