So I have no idea if sports day is an actual thing in the US but I had the idea and just had to go with it. I wrote this on my new tablet in breaks at college so excuse any spelling mistakes, I'll sort it out when I have a full size keyboard to use.
Hope you like it.
"Go Cassie," Sam and Janet yelled while Jack and Daniel cheered her on and Teal'c watched on, still unsure of what the actual point of this was. They all cheered together as Cassie crossed the finish line, first, even Teal'c who had gotten caught up in the moment a little.
Cassie smiled over at them, beaming with pride that she had managed to win. She waited for everyone else to finish and then for their teacher to send them back to where they had been sitting before she went up to the teacher and spoke to her quickly. The group of adults waiting for her could see her excitement as she gestured wildly with her hands.
"What do you think that was about?" Jack asked the group in general when Cassie finished and turned to head towards them.
Everyone shrugged in response. "You could always ask her yourself," Sam suggested in a midly cheeky tone.
Jack rolled his eyes while Sam and Janet laughed and Daniel chuckled along with them.
"Well done CassandraFraiser," Teal'c stated, bringing to everyone's attention Cassie's return.
"Yeah well done Cassie," everyone else chorused while Cassie blushed.
In a low and quiet voice Jack then added, "Looks like our little alien is the fastest in her class."
Cassie beamed at him while Janet and Sam both shook their heads. While they had been trying to get Cassie used to the way things were on Earth Jack still insisted on calling her his little alien.
Usually he did it in the privacy of his or Janet's home but occasionally he would use the nickname in a public place.
When Cassie didn't sit down like the rest of her class had now that they were back with their families and friends who had come to the school sports day Janet asked, "Are you ok Cassie?"
Cassie nodded quickly, her cheeks still pink from her run. "You know that we have our sports day in the evening is so parents can come without having to miss work?" Cassie asked. When all the adults nodded that they did indeed know that, and that all of them thought it was a wonderful idea, Cassie continued, "Well they also do a race for all the parents."
"Go on Doc," Jack teased, cutting across Cassie, "Up you get."
Janet rolled her eyes but otherwise ignored Jack, waiting for Cassie to continue. "Well I asked my teacher," Cassie started again, "And she said that if you want to you can all race."
"I don't think so Cassie." Jack answered quickly, "I'm not really sure I'm up to it."
"Please Uncle Jack," Cassie begged, giving him her best puppy eyes, "Please, please, please."
"Fine," Jack agreed, he could never say no to Cassie's puppy eyes, "But only if Carter, Daniel, Teal'c and the Doc do it too."
Cassie looked at them all hopefully.
"Well I'm game," Sam stated while Daniel and Janet both nodded in agreement.
"Damn," Jack muttered under his breath, too quiet for Cassie to hear but loud enough to earn him an eye roll from Sam. He had been expecting them all to say no, or at least Daniel to say no anyway.
Everyone turned to look at Teal'c and the Jaffa sat for a moment before he inclined his head towards Cassie, "I would be honoured CassandraFraiser."
"Traitor," Jack mumbled to himself, earning another look from Sam in the process.
Cassie beamed and then they all cheered as another race finished. It had been a longer race since it was an obstacle course of sorts. "Well it's next," Cassie stated, "So you need to go to the start line."
"What all of us?" Daniel asked.
Cassie nodded, "Everyone runs together, moms and dads so it doesn't take as long."
"That's going to be a lot of people," Sam commented, looking towards the crowd that had already gathered on the start line.
"Sally said that if there are lots of grownups then they split it into two groups but it's still mixed," Cassie explained. She hadn't known herself because this was her first sports day, and she had been excited about it for weeks.
"Come on then," Janet instructed, standing up and moving to stand beside her daughter, "Let's get this over with."
Cassie beamed again. "I'll stay with the bags," she decided, "And watch from here."
Janet gave her a smile and waited for the other four to get to their feet. Once everyone was standing, Sam having offered Jack a hand to get him up faster because he was still trying to avoid the race, they headed over to the group of adults who were milling around the start line.
As they got closer they saw that the teacher there was indeed splitting the adults into two groups. "That's Cassie's teacher," Janet pointed out as she directed them to join the second, smaller group.
"Cassie like her?" Jack asked. He and the others all knew that Cassie was really enjoying school but they didn't really know much about the actual teacher because Cassie tended to focus more on her new friends.
Janet nodded. "Yeah Cassie does seem to like her and she was very considerate and helpful at getting Cassie used to coming to school."
They stopped talking and listened to what Cassie's teacher was saying. "It's a straight run to the finish line," she explained, "When the first group finishes and everyone clears the finish line I'll start the second group off."
Everyone nodded at her words and the second group moved away so that the first group could get ready to run. It was easy to see who was going to take it seriously and run as fast as they could and try to win and who was only doing this because their child had asked them too. The teacher raised the start gun and pointed it into the air. "Ready, set," she started before she pulled the trigger and shouted, "Go!"
They took off at varying speeds, some taking it at little more than a walk while others took off as fast as they could. Once everyone had cleared the start line the teacher gestured for the second group to step forwards.
They waited for the first race to finish and the finish line to clear and then listened as the teacher once again said, "Ready, set," and raised the gun.
"Last one across the line buys the first round of drinks next time we go O'Malley's," Jack said in a rush just as the teacher yelled go and shot the gun.
The five of them all took off, leaving most of the group behind as they sped off. A few of other parents kept up for a minute but none of them could match the speed that all of them had.
Teal'c was by far the fastest, as they knew he would be, his Jaffa agility and superior strength meant that even though he was by far the largest he was also the fastest. While Janet mainly stayed on base she still had to be fit and ready to go off world at any moment so she was also in good shape and her and Daniel were tied when it came to speed and were running nearly side by side at the back of their group. Sam and Jack however had been in the Air Force a long time, like Janet, but unlike Janet they went off world regularly so were much faster than both her and Daniel, having a few years' experience over Daniel were faster than him too. They were pretty evenly matched due even though Jack was actually stronger than Sam due to the age difference and the trouble he had with his knees.
Because they were pretty evenly matched they ran together, leap frogging each other as they ran after Teal'c.
Teal'c crossed the line and stood waiting for the others to finish, not even a little out of breath. Sam and Jack ran side by side until they were only a few feet from the finish wee Sam suddenly speed ahead and crossed the line a few seconds before Jack. They both slowed up and then stopped and took a moment to catch their breaths as Daniel and Janet finished in sync. The four of them were a little winded but nowhere near as much as the other adults who then started to cross the line.
"Well that was fun," Jack stated with a smile as the last of the adults crossed the line. "It's a little bit weird running without being chased though."
Sam, Janet and Daniel all laughed while Teal'c stood straight faced as ever. Cassie's teacher came over to them and handed Teal'c a sticker for coming first while the others all got a slightly smaller one for taking part. "I'm glad Cassie asked if you could all run," she commented as she handed them out, "I don't think I've seen people run that fast in a while."
The five adults all smiled in response, even Teal'c although it wasn't as wide as the others, before they all headed back to where Cassie was sitting with their bags, a brilliant smile on her face.
As they walked Jack muttered to Sam, "We'll have to ask Hammond if we can have a sports day on base, I think that would be a laugh."
Sam shook her head but didn't comment. She could see it being fun but she also see everyone getting very competitive and taking it just that little bit too seriously.
