A new chapter! This is about Jim's life after it all went downhill.
I know that in every fanfiction you want mostly Spirk, preferably as soon as possible. The two are the main characters here and a lot of Spirk is planned. In this and the next chapter, however, we first deal with the lives of Jim and Spock after the disaster. If anyone is reading this please give me a chance. This is my first really long fanfiction I've planned. Thank you very much!

The Rest of the World

As a child, Jim had the strangest dreams. In each of these dreams he had memories that were so real to him that when he woke up it always took a moment to become aware that they were wrong.
Even now he was lying awake on the floor, staring at the sky and wishing, even after two years, that the realization would come and that not everything was real. He would be in his bed at the academy, possibly with Gaila by his side, and not have to wait long for Bones to scold him. Everything would be as normal as it could be. No Nero. Not a destroyed Vulcan. No earth enslaved by the Romulans. Jim would just close his eyes and if he opened them again the nightmare would be over ...
...
"Are you trying to get killed again?" A familiar voice echoed in the distance. Footsteps approached him and someone stopped in front of him. Jim cursed inwardly. He kept his eyes closed. He would treat him like air until he would disappeare.
However, it turned out to be difficult to ignore someone when they were sitting on your stomach.
"Get off me, Gary!" Jim scolded and couldn't help but open his eyes.
No, this world was still the same ... Fuck!
"Do you think it's a good idea to lie down here like a target?" His buddy asked without getting up from him. Of course Jim could easily have push him away, but instead he let his head fall back and sighed.
"Lying on the roof is smarter than you think. The soldiers search the building from the inside and never go up on the roof."
"Yes, because they have enough pilots to search the area from above. You are a perfect target for them."
"Then I'll pretend I'm dead."
"Very good! That will definitely stop them from shooting you again; just to be sure", Gary replied sarcastically as he began to bob up and down slightly on Jim's stomach.
The bastard wanted to piss him off!
"What do you want Gary?" Jim asked angrily and as he looked at his friend he saw the blood on his lip for the first time. "What happened?"
Gary caught his gaze and wiped his mouth. "Shit happened! Kelso's in trouble."
Now Jim throw him away so he could stand on both feet in a flash. "Why don't you say that right away?! This is serious!"
Gary just got up and wiped his clothes. He seemed to find the situation less urgent. "As if we were already having fun here", he replied and disappeared into the stairwell. Jim close behind him.
"Just tell me what's going on", he demanded as they walked down the stairs together.
Gary just looked at him briefly. "While you started your isolation period, Kelso and I were thinking about how we could get new supplies."
Yes, that was a constant problem these days.
"Kelso came up with the great idea of stealing from a Romulan search party. After all, the boys had to have something like rations with them."
At that statement Jim winced noticeably. "Are you crazy! You don't steal from the Romulans! They just want one reason to be able to destroy an entire city. They don't care how small the offense for it is! That was a stupid idea!"
Now Gary turned to him and grabbed his collar. "We're running out of supplies, Jimmy! And unlike you, Kelso at least had a suggestion and believe it or not, the shit didn't go wrong because of us! Other Survivors stepped in looking for trouble. Those idiots attacked the Romulans directly, not us!"
Jim forcibly pushed him away. For him, however, that didn't change the fact that the plan was utterly stupid. "Where is Kelso now?"
"I was able to escape. Kelso must be in Sector A somewhere. The Romulans are searching everything. I don't know if the guy is hiding well."
That was so fucked uped!
Jim pushed Gary aside and ran down the stairs. They had to go back as soon as possible and get Kelso out of there. Who knew what the Romulans would do to him if they got him?
"We could just leave him behind, you know?" Gary called after him as he kept up with Jim. Leaving his friend behind hadn't been an option for him, of course, and the bastard knew it. Even so, he felt the urge to answer. "We definitely won't do that!"
When they finally left the building through the back door, Jim turned back to Gary. "Do you have any idea where Kelso could hide?"
"A little ... follow me!"
He didn't have to tell him twice either. The two sprinted through the alleys, avoiding streets and open spaces. Even if they had to save their friend, they couldn't be careless. When a Romulan spotted them, they would pick up a gun and pull the trigger without asking questions.
On their way, Jim thought of the old days. When the streets were full of life and people and other races enjoyed their daily lives. The conversations and disputes. The laughter that echoed around. The quiet moments that everyone enjoyed together in their own home. Families who sat and ate together at the table. Friends who met for a movie night or wanted to watch a game. There was peace.
... but that was the past.
When Jim looked around now, there was only unbearable silence and devastation. Many of the buildings were empty and abandoned. Some have been completely destroyed or partially collapsed. The survivors hid in the dark and feared the Romulans. If footsteps echoed through the streets, it could only be patrols clearing the area. Even the only airships in the sky were only used for surveillance. No one was on the surface unless it had to be.
Jim found remnants of the old hope and the will to fight on old masonry. On many walls he found old writings with "We will not go down in silence" or "The stars are for everyone." People hadn't wanted to get down too quickly, but Nero had a weapon with the Red Materia that they couldn't fight. The Romulans quickly showed that thousands of Earthlings would pay if one of them were injured. For Jim, it was almost a miracle that the earth still existed, even if he didn't understand why. His home planet was tortured and looted so that it could no longer be of any value. They might not care about humanity either, or they wouldn't hunt them so ruthlessly. Was it just a sick reward for them in the end? Was the earth nothing more than a trophy?
... Actually it didn't matter. Jim wasn't going to get an answer anyway. It was a fight to stay alive and he couldn't let such questions distract him.
Still ... sometimes he wondered if he would see some of his friends again ... He really hoped Bones was still alive. Did he have enough to eat? Did his medical training help him even though he lacked the technical equipment? Jim missed his friend and could only hold on to the hope that he was still a stubborn bastard and refused to die.
Kelso was different ... Jim wouldn't say it out loud, but his buddy would have been dead in this new world if he hadn't had him and Gary by his side. They worked together to survive. Damn it! They even had ground rules to increase their chances. One of them was that they never attack a Romulan. Each of them had agreed immediately, so why this stupid idea?
Jim knew they were having trouble getting their food, but that was just insane. No matter how bad his stomach growled, Jim refused to go near these bastards. Romulans ruled the earth. It was a fact and none of them should forget it. After all, they were the ones with the guns. The end of the story! There was no reason-
Gary yanked him against the wall, interrupting his thoughts, and joined him on it.
Jim didn't ask what was wrong because it wasn't long before he heard the heavy sound of a Romulan war machine patrolling the streets. He pressed himself more against the wall and didn't even dare to breathe. They were already in Sector A. Was that thing going in Kelso's direction? Jim prayed it wasn't.
His heart skipped a beat when the heavy vehicle stopped and he heard footsteps from individuals. Voices rang out. Unfortunately Jim couldn't understand anything. He had never learned Romulan.
"Release us!"
Only when he understood something did he winced in horror. Gary still held his arm in front of his chest and forcibly pushed him back. Both heard the same thing. The soldiers had tracked down survivors. What if Kelso was among them?
Jim panicked at the thought of losing his friend. He pushed Gary's arm away and went into the next corner to peer out of their hiding place. He had to be sure!
There were hardly a handful of soldiers on the street, their war vehicle stayed still and 7 people standing in one line. Kelso wasn't among them!
Most of this people looked around anxiously, as if someone were going to save their group. Two of them still had the courage to look defiantly at the Romulans.
... these idiots would probably have to die first or watch the others die. Jim had seen this too many times.
One of the soldiers stood in front of them and spoke in his own language. It was obvious that they didn't understand. The guy seemed more than aware of that. He repeated his words and signaled his soldiers with his hand to make them be ready to fire. The survivors immediately winced.
"W-we don't understand y-you", one of the group stammered with his hands up and looked pleadingly at each soldier. The Romulan repeated, but it was clear that this would not help. These people did not speak his language. Jim even doubted anyone else had a working communicator. In the end it wouldn't make a difference. If the guy wanted to know something, he'd somehow get it out of them.
Another gesture. It was only a split second, but everyone understood what was going to happen next. All seven turned to flee, but the shots were fired instantly. None of the group got far. All fell lifeless to the ground. The job was done for these bastards. Without looking at the bodies again, they simply left and got back into their vehicle. Jim closed his eyes as the soldiers drove carelessly over the deceased and carefree continued on their way.
He tried to take a deep breath. There was no point in getting angry. He couldn't change anything.
"They're going our way, Jimmy", Gary informed him grimly from behind.
Jim cursed. "Fuck!"
"You said it!"
"Do you think these guys were among the survivors who started fighting?"
"It doesn't matter. They won't be able to mess with anyone anymore."
Jim couldn't tell how much he felt the urge to go to the bodies and drag them off the street. Maybe to bury them? Or to loot them? He wasn't sure. All he knew was that they had to go to Kelso.
"So we need to worry about the soldiers. It's getting complicated."
There was an explosion in the distance and when Jim saw Gary's gaze he knew it was going to be very complicated.
Fuck! Why couldn't that just be a bad dream?

The next chapter will be about Spock and then the two will meet soon. Promised!
Bones isn't dead either. Don't worry! I planned him for later.
