Chapter 20
Choose

Of course they had to choose the worst time to be nosy. They both had a firm grip on both of my arms as they pulled me back out into the rain. Gilan and Luther should never be left alone in a tent together. Who knows what they would do to each other. I know that Gilan can surely handle himself but for some reason he didn't look like his normal controlled self and it kind of worried me. I just hope that Luther wouldn't find a way to get rid of him before morning or else we are going to be in trouble. Speaking of trouble having these two with their scary smiles on their faces frighten me.
"Where are you taking me?" I asked suddenly worried for my safety.
"Your tent of course." Jane said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. Stopped in my tracks, forcing them to come to a halt.
"Well we already passed it then." I sighed and used their hold on me to guide them to where they wanted to go.

They probably thought my tent was with everyone else's, usually clustered around the main food tent. Luther of course would probably panic if I was ever that far away from him and usually had my tent put up right next to his. I stirred them towards my large tent and opened the flap to let them in. Taking a second to listen for any signs of fighting from the neighbouring tent before stepping inside myself. When I walked in Jane's and Beatrice's mouth were still open. I don't really know why. They put my tent up in a rush today so they didn't even have time to add the extra luxuries. Silently, I was glad because they were a waste of effort just to carry them around. Ranger Silas however was the only one who didn't want them.

"You must've saved the kingdom in your past life Silas." Beatrice joked.

"We don't even get a tent half this size and we have to share it with four people." Jane complained. I said nothing not wanting to create a bad relationship with the girls.

"Silas, you are so lucky!" Beatrice suddenly hugged me. I stiffened as my arms were pinned to my sides.

"I would do anything to be in your shoes right now. How do you do it?" Jane chimed in. Beatrice and Jane lead me to my bed and sat me down. They sat on either side of me, each with a hand on my arm as if they were ready to pin me down if I tried to escape.

"Now," Beatrice started, "we have to decide what you are going to do." My eyes were wide. I didn't like where this was going.

"What do you mean?" I asked cautiously.

"You're going to have to choose honey." Jane placed a gentle hand on my shoulder. I was stuck now.

"Choose what?" I asked confused.

"Oh Silas." Beatrice and Jane smiled at each other. Obviously they knew something I didn't. It was like they were having a silent conversation. I tried to not let my frustration show as I couldn't figure out what they expression meant. "If you don't choose between Luther and that new Gil guy they are going to end up fighting."

"But how romantic would that be to have them fighting for your love." Jane cut Beatrice off looking somewhere in the distance with wide eyes. Wait, love? This time it was my eyes that went wide.

"Don't you think you're thinking a little too far ahead?" Beatrice nudged Jane's shoulder reaching over me in the process who almost fell over. Seeing these two interact was rather comical as they whispered nonsense between them. I laughed quietly as they fought over opinions of who I was going to end up with. As a Ranger I couldn't think like that, I couldn't afford emotions to cloud my judgement. Thinking about love or falling in love has never crossed my mind. I've heard of it. But the look that Beatrice and Jane get in their eyes when they think of the possibility of even finding a man befuddles me. There is this sparkle in their eye that I don't even know how to do. Could it be learnt? It might help persuade Luther more. But then again I don't know if I should risk it just yet, not with the speed his feelings are developing for me.

"Obviously it is too early to tell." Jane said snapping me out of my thoughts. Again the direction of this conversation was still a mystery to me. Why was trying to figure out their minds more difficult than analyzing an enemy's intentions.

"Too early to tell what?" I wondered if we were in fact even still talking about Gilan and Luther. Both of the girls giggled again. I seemed to be tonight's comedic entertainment.

"Well we have seen how Luther acts and it's pretty obvious what's on his mind." Beatrice explained slowly. "Well obvious to mostly everyone that is." She added in as an afterthought.

"What she means is that we are going to help you through this and help you pick the right match." Jane finalized. They both blinked at me expectantly. They were waiting for my answer. I had no idea how they thought they could help me. I had my mission so I already knew that I had to get close to Luther. Gilan is just there so it doesn't progress too quickly before the real action begins. But the one thing I'm lacking was what they seemed to figure out in a matter a seconds. Knowing how to read a person's mind on an emotional level was something that I've never done. Maybe having them help me wouldn't be that bad. They could help me where Gilan seems just to laugh at my naivety and forgets to answer.

"Okay..." I reply hesitantly. They both squealed in my ears making me jump. I was stuck frozen on spot when they both hugged me from either side. Once it seemed like they squeezed all the air out of my lungs they finally let go.

"Leave everything to us Silas."

What I didn't realize what that they meant everything. I could even feel my eyelids drooping by the time they had finished what felt like putting my hair in knots and prepping my face for tomorrow. They fell asleep on my bed, I didn't mind. I actually found it rather humorous how they have bundles of energy one minute and the next the collapsed on top of my legs do to exhaustion. I hope they weren't going to do this every night. The sheer process was similar to what Mrs. Padavick put me through. Just when I was thinking that being a girl wasn't so bad. How I had managed to let them attack me I have no idea, that's what shocked me the most. I didn't even complain like I normally do. I simply sat there and listened to them talk about mindless things as they worked their fingers. Not wearing a ranger's cloak for this long must've changed me. My hair hurt as I rested my head down. Taking it out the the small strips of material tying my hair up was out of the question as the two girls would probably force me to do something worse if I did.

As usual the early morning beams from the sun creeping over the horizon caused my eyes to flutter open. Blinking twice to adjust my eyes to the dim light I slowly took in my surroundings. The two girls were still sleeping soundly, hogging most of my bed. Gently, I pushed Jane over and swung Beatrice's legs off me so I had enough room to escape. They groaned slightly mumbling incoherent jibber before adjusting into another comfortable position. Crawling over them was the easy part so I eventually made it to the edge of my bed so I could lace up by boots. Quickly I changed into my green dress which wasn't dampened by the humidity like the one I just peeled off and adjusted my brown belt around my waist. Using last night's rain as an excuse I had ignored being proper and excluded lacing my corset back on. Deciding that I could get away with a simple chest wrap, at least for one day. The belt was tight enough to create the illusion of a thin waist so no one was going to notice. Well I hope that Beatrice and Jane's keen eyes wouldn't notice. I grabbed my blue cloak and pulled it around my shoulders before heading out of my tent.

The ground was still wet, causing me to hike my dress up a little higher not to get mud on the bottom of the skirt. And I had learnt yesterday the dangers of having a wet skirt mixed with my clumsiness could be. But that wasn't the only thing I noticed. Gilan was already outside tending to a fire. The smell of good coffee filled my nose and I smiled. Ever since I tried the horrible stuff Claudia tried to pass as coffee I've restrained myself from having a second cup. It wasn't until the sweet aroma hit me did my taste buds tell me that I missed it. Quickly I went and sat down beside the freelance clad knight.

"What's got you in such a good mood this morning?" Gilan asked before even looking at me. I blinked, astounded that he could even see the smile on my face. Or was he just guessing? He turned with a cocked eyebrow. It wasn't a guess, not with the look on his face. It turned into a questioning glance as he looked slightly above me. I turned around but found nothing there. He chuckled a placed a hand on my head. Immediately, I cringed from the painful knots the girls had tied my hair into last night. It hadn't hurt until now and I gave Gilan an unimpressed glare.

"Jane and Beatrice decided to torture me last night. Don't ask." I grumbled. My good mood was gone. His hand was making my head hurt more and he seemed to enjoy causing me pain as he didn't show any signs of taking it off. Pursing my lips I grabbed his hand and pulled it off my head. What I didn't expect was for him to switch his grip. Before I could finish blinking he grabbed my wrist and pulled me closer in. I have been keeping my guard down and I was going to hear it from him.

"You're going to have to be wary of Maverick," Gilan started in a hushed tone. "He knows that you're purposely hiding your powers from him. He's already convinced Luther to let him train you more."

"That might be a little more difficult now that you're here." I matched his quiet tone as my the corner of my lips turned up in a cunning smile.

"From what I've noticed, I don't think that's going to stop him from trying."

"He's going to want to get rid of you more than Luther."

"I doubt there is a way for him to convince me to leave you." I had been surveilling on one side of our surroundings for any movement or any sign to stop in fear of being overheard. As I knew Gilan was doing the other side. We were talking so low chances were slim but Rangers were prepared for any eventually. Except he said the last bit differently. It wasn't hushed. I snapped my head to him. I froze realizing how close we were. It wasn't until I looked up and locked eyes with him that I noticed that we were mere inches from our noses touching. I knew he had pulled me close to converse privately but even this was closer than I had thought we were. My chest tightened my heartbeat began pulsing in my ears. Why couldn't I pull away, or even move. I stayed there simply staring into his eyes analyzing their depth. What was this? Why was I feeling like this?

A leg nudge Gilan's arm, basically kicking it out of the way. In another blink Gilan was back to tending the coffee on the fire as Luther squeezed himself between us. Feeling flustered I let him have some space as cleared my throat to clear my head.

"Good morning love." Luther said with a smile. I did notice the look he shot Gilan before turning his full attention on me. He too noticed my hair and I rolled my eyes. It couldn't look that bad could it?

"Jane and Beatrice." I simply said. Luther laughed.

"I guess I will have to protect you next time." He placed both hands on the side my head. I cringed again at the hands pulling my hair.

"Coffee?" Gilan had my back as he practically pushed Luther off of me. I greatly accepted. I inhaled the sweet aroma as I let the mug warm my hands. I smiled as I took a small sip letting the sweet and bitter taste fill my tastebuds. Gilan was right. It does taste better with honey. But nothing can compare with Ranger coffee. I smiled wider if possible as I was finally given my favourite elixir.

"Silas!" The moment ended. The shriek that came from behind me, froze me on the spot. I don't even think coffee could save me for what that voice had in mind. Before I had the chance to even take another sip two pairs of hands grabbed my upper arms and dragged me backwards out of my seat. Luckily I wasn't doused in hot coffee due to Gilan's quick hands. Luther also had the same idea but wasn't as fast and he just simply let his hand fall back down to his knee. I gave the two men a pleading look before my view of the outside was cut off by canvas tenting.

They turned me around with twin disapproving scowls and matching hands on their hips. It was the silence that made me want to back away slowly. Somehow I knew that they would be able stop me. Even with all my training and having more strength they knew my weakness in being a women. My eyes shifted between them just waiting for what them to at least speak. The tension was like the calm before the storm.

Then Jane sighed shaking her head. "I guess we have so much more work cut out for us than we realized."

"How could you even think of just wasting all our hard work like that?" Beatrice tone was a little more harsh and made me jump back.

"What do you mean?" I asked confused.

"Beatrice how about you go and make sure that Luther and Silas' fiancée don't kill each other while we have their peacekeeper." Jane calmed Beatrice down with gentle strokes on her back.

"Fine." Beatrice agreed making her way towards the exit. "Don't worry Silas I won't let them near each other." She nodded confidently before heading outside.

As soon as Jane had me sitting down on my bed we heard Beatrice's loud voice from outside. Apparently she, nor did Jane by her expression knew that Claudia made bread in the morning. She announced loudly that she was going to get some for us and not to come out until she was back. By the sounds of it, I think she took Gilan with her as a measure to keep them from being unsupervised. Jane began loosening my hair. Each time she undid a knot that part of my scalp thanked her in relief.

"Next time Silas wake us up if you can't undo these yourself." I blinked in confusion at her. She laughed to herself. "Really, it's like you were raised by a man." She joked, not know how spot on she really was. "The trick to being a woman Silas is to keep everything hidden until it's perfect or until it's the right moment. Thats including hair." One last tug and my hair was free. I gently massaged my head trying my best not to mess anything up.

"Now that feels better." I smiled at her as she nodded. She probably knows the pain I've just been through as she smiled sweetly alongside with me. Jane sat in front biting her tongue as she organized the curled ringlets of hair around my face. Jane's advice about being a woman made sense but the only type of mystery I was used to creating was that of a Ranger, and I don't know if that is going to be of any help for my case. This is just so confusing.

"There, done!" Jane clapped her hands together in excitement. "I can't wait to see their faces. I wish I had a mirror to show you Silas but you'll just have to trust me." As if they had planned this I heard Beatrice's steps coming towards our tent. Jane stood me up and started straightening out my dress just as Beatrice entered the tent and quickly shut the flaps behind her.

"Wow Silas! Can't you share any of your beauty with us?" Beatrice said half finished one of the small loaves of bread in her hands.

"Completely unfair isn't it." Jane agreed folding her arms going to stand by her friend. They both stared at me making me feel uncomfortable so I smiled at my feet at their compliment.

"No wonder why they fell for you." Beatrice handed Jane one of the loaves in her hand.

"Time to go." They both nodded and start pushing me towards the opening. Whenever they both started pushing me made me feel really nervous. I don't know why but it just felt like I wasn't going to like what was going to come next. Usually I was right.

There were two sets of eyes that were wide. As soon as they heard the shuffle of opening the tent and the three of us stepping out they had both turned. My hair must look completely different than before because I have never seen both men freeze on spot. I wasn't sure which pair to give focus so I shifted between the two before biting my bottom lip and tucking my hair behind my ears. I was just hoping it didn't look weird because I've never had my hair curled before. I highly doubt I will willingly let them do it to me again either. "Don't play with your curls too much or they will go flat." Jane whispered in my ear.

"That's a man's job." Beatrice murmured in my other ear causing both of the girls to giggle and me to blush. One of the girls gave me a gentle push and I took as a sign to go and sit down next to Gilan and Luther. Both of their eyes followed me as I sat between them. I considered this to be better than them giving each other glares.

"Coffee?" Gilan was the first one to regain composure. I gladly accepted and noticed it was a fresh cup. Mine probably cooled off in the time I was away. With a smooth hand Gilan gently held a loose curl in his hand before tucking it back behind my ear. I didn't miss the wolfish smile Gilan shot behind my head.

"Try this Silas." Beatrice reached across Luther to pass me her last loaf. "I've been here a whole year, how did I not know Claudia made bread in the morning?"

"And here I was hoping that we could keep that one of our secrets Silas." Luther said with a sweet smile. He proceeded to at tapping my nose with his index finger. I could sense Gilan tensing behind me as Luther's fingers gently brushed my cheek. He, just like Gilan, shot a look over top of me as if they were competing for attention. Apparently Jane and Beatrice were right. They were competing, trying to win me to have more pull on their side of this war. I just knew that I wasn't going to like being in the middle of their tug of war again. All I know is that I'm going to have figure out why my body is reacting like it's on adrenalin and how to stop it.

"So Gilan," Beatrice started, "you said that you trained as a knight, but haven't found a fief to settle down in yet." She gestured to Jane across everyone with a not so subtle head nod.

"Surely a man with your talents would be easily recruited." Jane added in. Luckily I wasn't the one who had to start a conversation between these two. It was hard enough to keep my attention divided. I had to let Luther know that there was still some hope for him or else he won't fight to get me to stay. If that happens then our mission will be over. I heard Gilan laugh as we both knew they only got that information from eavesdropping on us last night.

"I have been recruited by several fiefs." Gilan said simply. Before the girls had a chance to say anything after gasping he continued. "But like I said before I wanted to marry Silas first and let her decide where we should live." Gilan casted a brilliant smile towards me. My heart pounded loudly a couple of times before I managed to swallow the sensation down. Just then I felt an arm drape around my shoulders. I froze for a second under the contact. Are these two ever going to give me a break?

"Are you sure that she even wants to leave now?" Luther asked sweetly, but the tone shot at Gilan was anything but.

"Well then I will just have to stay until she decides to leave." Gilan gave a genuine smile with a playful wink. Get a hold of yourself Silas, he's just acting. You are also just acting with Luther so there is no reason why them fighting over you should have this effect on you.

"Except there is one small problem." Luther began with a force smile. "I am not going to have a freeloader. Everyone here pulls their weight. They either are part of the act or help with the act. We don't have any jobs for a knight." Luther's tone was starting to sound angry. He did have a point and if Gilan and I didn't think of something quick he may win this one. To calm him down I turned my attention fully on him. I even daringly placed my hand on his. He stopped his murderous glare immediately at the touch of my fingers. For a second he actually looked shock as he stared in disbelief before giving me a wide smile.

"But Luther, that would mean I have to leave too." He blinked in surprise and a sudden fear flashed in his eyes. I continued: " I've been doing nothing and freeloading this whole time." Hopefully this would give Gilan enough time to figure out his next move.

"But love you're different." He cooed softly. "You've also been practicing with the acrobats. When you're ready maybe you'll be a part of the show." I didn't miss when he said the word maybe. Was he worried about me? Or was he set on treating me like a princess who never has to lift a finger even after I told him that wasn't what I wanted.

Gilan cleared his throat and I felt the muscles in Luther's hand twitch as we were disrupted in his time with me. "Then how about this." I turned and saw the cunning smile on a ranger could have. He had a plan. "I do have other skills than being a knight. Let me have an act in the show and I'll prove it. But I will need Silas as my assistant." I noticed how Luther was set on denying him the chance, up until he said my name. "Silas do you remember what we use to practice back when we were kids?" From the look in his eye, I was to follow his lead. I was probably the only one who could convince Luther to let him stay. I nodded enthusiastically before turning back to Luther with hope in my eyes. I grabbed both of his hands and clutched them both tightly as I tucked them under my chin. I tired to keep my smile big as I looked from under my long eyelashes.

"Please can I try?" I left out Gilan on purpose knowing that I could distract him if I focused it all on me. It was as if he melted under my gaze.

"I'll give you a trial run. If I like it you're in and maybe I'll consider putting you in my show, if not you leave." He said monotonously to Gilan.

"Thank you!" I smiled even bigger. It was almost as if my body took over because if I was fully in control I would never do this. Especially with Gilan right beside me. My arms flung around Luther's shoulders and I embraced him tightly. Luther was probably just as shocked because it took him a second to react. I heard him chuckle in my ear before wrapping his arms around my waist. It only last a second longer because I felt a hand grab the back of my belt and pull me back. The look on Gilan's face once he let go of me was one that I was scared of. Becks used to give me that look all the time. It always meant that I was in big trouble.

"I can't wait to see what act the two of you are going to do!" Jane said excitedly.

"Just having the two of them would be enough to lure a crowd." Beatrice added. So enclosed in my small bubble between the two men, I almost forgot about my two friends on the outside watching my every move. For this they were probably more observant than a ranger.

"How far do we have to go today Luther?" Jane asked changing topic so Luther wouldn't change his mind.

"The ground is still too wet for us to pull the carts through. Plus we don't want to carry the water weight from the tents." Luther said without having to think. He did care about the people working under him. Forcing his company through the mud would only make people leave. If they were starting something against the king they would need people. But it did make me wonder how he acted around the rest of the troupe when he wasn't with me or the ringmaster entertaining the crowds.

"Oh thank goodness. I don't think I could handle another day of walking." Jane exasperated.

"It was one day Jane." Beatrice rolled her eyes at her friend.

"Doesn't change the fact that I hate walking." Jane complained causing a laugh to spread through our small group.

"It does mean that I have to make rounds this morning." Luther stated as he stood up, brushing off his pants. "Would you care to join me love?" He asked while offering his hand.

"If we are going to convince you about letting our act be in the show I think it would be better if we practiced, don't you think Silas." Gilan suggested causing Luther to scowl before returning to the princely smile directed at me. I sighed to myself, hating that I was going to have to choose between them. I briefly glanced at Jane and Beatrice but they had opposite suggestions so they were no help what so ever.

"Silas could I have some of your time today?" A third voice came from behind our small circle. There was only one voice that made the hairs stand on the back of neck. I had sensed someone approaching but didn't expect them to approach, as normal people were still sleeping at this time. Hearing his words I noticed Luther's outstretched fingers curl in. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Gilan's jaw tense as he gave me the slightest of nods. Neither of us were happy about going with Maverick. This was our job even if it left me vulnerable. But that was Gilan's job to watch my back.

I set my face to be as content as I could make it in the situation and accepted Luther's hand to help me to my feet. He squeezed it tightly as we made our way to Maverick. The two black orbed eyes was the only thing that made Luther let go. Following him I glanced back trying to reassure both Luther and Gilan that I would be alright. If only I could convince myself. I wasn't surprised that he would take advantage of our day off. But him wishing to train me could also mean that he has new things he wants me to try. That or he is going to find a new way to control me because the first one didn't work. And since Luther now has competition he'll have to. Find a new way to guarantee my allegiance. I hate to know what his mind would be capable of coming up with if he ever finds out that I was against him from the start.

"Now miss Silas, shall we begin?" Maverick turned and asked when we were far enough into the forest that a scream wouldn't be heard.

Dragging my feet back the long hike back to camp was exhausting. My energy was drained. Trying to fight back Mavericks new attempts of controlling my actions and keep some of my powers secret was more strenuous than any training exercises Becks made me do. Maverick said he was just trying to bring forth my potential but I could see his frustration when he knew I was still fighting back. Giving him control would mean the end of the mission and there was no way I was going to let him.

All I wanted was to curl up and have a short nap to gather my strength. Luckily the ground was still damp making laying an unfavourable option so Luther and Gilan wouldn't have to send out a search party. The sun was casting long shadows from the west casting the camp in a light orange glow. Almost there, I smiled to myself. Walking through camp the happy chatters of those waiting for Claudia to finish cooking filled the air. It smelt better than some of her other meals but eating was the last thing on my mind. Closing in on the cluster of tents that held my bed I heard the thumping of a familiar sound. I managed to smile at Gilan as he practice some very simple knife throws before heading towards my tent. A hand on my wrist stopped me. Suddenly I was turned around which caused my already unfocused head to spin. Stumbling I felt a pair of strong arms lock onto my upper arms to hold me steady. Gilan's eyes were wide with worry. He began searching for signs of injury. "Silas what's wrong?" He finally asked after not finding anything visible. I let out a tired chuckle. I was glad he was holding me upright as the ground beneath me started to shift.

"You should see what Maverick looks like." I joked. Telling him more of my 'adventures' would take precious time I could use for sleeping. I leaned my weight into him. Resting my head against his hard chest was oddly soothing and the loud thumping of his heart caused my eyes to rest for a moment.

"What are we going to do Silas? If this is only the beginning…" He whispered softly as if it wasn't even for me to hear.

"That's what I have you for? So I can do this." I replied trying to make it sound light.

I didn't even have time to open my eyes let alone process what was happening when I did manage to get them open. My supportive wall had vanished in a second, making me wobble as I forced myself awake. The only words that reached my ears with any clarity where from Gilan's mouth yelling at another male figure."Just what are you doing to her if she comes back like that!" When I finally turned around Luther and Gilan were already at each other and I could tell what was going to happen next as fists were raised in the air. Just then my brain suddenly jolted awake realizing the danger. When Gilan held me he did it with one hand and the other with a fist. For some reason Gilan had his throwing knife in his left hand before the fight broke out. With new found energy I bounded two steps over to the two men who had their fists full of each other's shirts. By simply observing I could tell that Gilan easily had the upper hand. We needed to keep to the mission and Gilan wasn't going to ruin my hard work. Gilan punched Luther square in the jaw sending him stumbling backwards to the ground. I only had a few seconds. Before Gilan could sense that I wasn't on his side I grabbed his left wrist. I spun gracefully twisting his arm behind him forcing him to release his hold on his knife. Using my momentum I pulled back on his arm spinning the other way while simultaneously hiding in the only spot that was a accessible at the moment. I finally let go of Gilan's wrist and held out my arms straight out to the side. Both men stopped when they felt my hand on their chest. I managed glare at both of them. "If you two don't stop…" I never got to finish my sentence before my vision circled before fading to black.

Author's note: Finally they fight! If you have any questions or if something doesn't make sense please review or PM me. My laptop doesn't really work so I'm still working on how to type on my iPad( a real keyboard would probably make this go faster not to mention there isn't really a grammar check so I'm sorry if there are mistakes as I also don't have an editor). If you are wondering what Maverick did you may have to use your imagination until later. I'm also loving Beatrice and Jane who just make me laugh writing about them, what are your thoughts on them? As always Luther and Gilan are going to the next step next chapter to get her heart so stayed tuned. Anything else? Review! Or PM!

Love, Marie :)

Mando'a ranger: new name... I like it. Yes they did fight. I hope leaving it to one own imagination will make it to be the perfect fight in your head. Also I'm still working on how to write fight scenes so maybe I'll have one in the future. Thanks for the review.

Book overlords: thanks so much. I'll do my best to keep working hard.

Mando'a ranger: where have I been? School dead mostly.

GeorgiaIsAwesome: I love getting reviews like yours they always leave me smiling and feeling guilty for not being able to type faster. Well now it's six months and that just makes me feel horrible for leaving you hanging. I'm so glad you read my other story. I'm hoping you liked it (considering the fact you probably re-read it I'm going to say that you did. Some parts I do cringe at when I looked back at my early writing days compared to now). Thank you so much for that amazing
