Chapter 17

Hello guys! I am back with another chapter. I had some time today and I had an idea that was waiting to be expressed for a very long time, so here it is. This chapter has what we have all been waiting and hoping for. I do hope you enjoy! :)

The following morning the entire team was present in the bull pen early. They had found a lead on Abby's case and had a suspect who could have shot Abby. It wasn't a surprise to anyone now that Abby was involved in drugs and a drug deal had gone wrong. Even though Voight had not spelled it out for all of them, the team understood what had happened and they knew better than to question him or oppose him. They would ask him what this was about perhaps after the case was solved, but until then they had to simply obey his orders. The good thing about Intelligence was that they worked as a team, even though sometimes they didn't agree with one another. They had each other's back at all times and at any cost.

The day went by in chasing these leads and questioning all the suspects that popped up. But the team was confident that they would catch the shooter soon. Late in the afternoon they were finally set to catch the prick and the team geared up, ready to get over with this. Hailey, Kim and Kevin were going undercover to set up a drug deal with the shooter and the shooter would eventually lead them to the boss and they would be able to arrest everyone involved in this case. And before they were ready to depart, Jay and Hailey had had a slight argument. Jay did not want Hailey to go undercover under such circumstances but she wasn't going to listen to him. Jay had the right to be worried but that was the extent to which he could have his say, the rest was up to her and she wouldn't let him influence her or change her mind. It was gradually becoming clear why being in a relationship within the unit didn't help, there was this constant fear and worry that the other one would get hurt. But Jay wasn't going to think about that now, he would make sure she understood his worry and if possible listened to him. Hailey finally scolded him furiously, "Jay! I am going to be fine. You have to stop with this behaviour. Nothing is different, we are partners and partners have each other's backs."

"What do you mean nothing is different? There is a big difference and I am pretty sure you are aware of it as well," Jay said, surprised that Hailey was acting as though nothing had happened.

"That's the thing Jay. Even if there is a difference it cannot interfere with the job. And that's what Voight keeps saying, and if we behave like this, he will surely have our asses."

It was true, Hailey was right but so was Jay in his place. If Jay would have been going undercover Hailey would have had the same reaction or an even worse one. It was frustrating to have to undergo this, especially when Voight had warned them about just this and he was keeping a special eye on them. The pressure that brought about was massive and they had to both prove themselves. Jay was still uncertain but Hailey had made up her mind. "Jay, I am going to be fine. Now let's go, everyone's waiting for us."

They joined the rest of the team and Voight was explaining the final details. They left soon and were all in position. Soon they saw a car approaching and identified it as their target. Atwater, Burgess and Upton were prepared with the bag of money and hoped that this would go smoothly and they would have the offenders in cuffs soon. They met with the shooter and one of his colleagues who were both still hesitant to make the exchange, but ultimately they did it and Voight ordered the team to move in. Sensing that they were trapped both of them attempted to run and Hailey, Kim and Kevin went after them. Kim and Hailey went after the shooter and Atwater chased the other perp. They were running in narrow alleyways with so many obstacles in between. They had to be alert at all times and at the same time not lose sight of the offender. Kim and Hailey decided to trap the shooter from either side and Kim went another way. Hailey was still after the shooter, focused and alert. And when Kim appeared from the other side the shooter panicked and turned towards Hailey and fired three blind rounds, not aiming particularly. But it so happened that one of the shots hit Hailey before she could take cover and Hailey was on the ground. Kim shot the shooter in the chest twice ending his life in a matter of seconds and rushed to Hailey. She was alive, but breathing with difficulty. It seemed the team had heard the shot and Voight was enquiring desperately about what had happened. Kim herself was about to speak in the radio, "10-1! 10-1! Officer down! I need an ambulance on"—

Those were the final words Jay heard before racing to where he had heard the shot. Hailey had been shot and he knew this because he had seen Kim and Hailey go after the shooter and Kevin after the other guy. Then the team heard on their personal phones, Kim was yelling, "Hailey has been shot! I need help! Where are you guys!"

Confirming what he already knew, Jay ran faster, if that was even possible to Hailey's aid. He spotted Kim by Hailey's side and rushed to the scene. He dropped by Hailey's side and began, "Hailey! Hailey! Are you alright? Hailey!" The fear and desperation in his voice were as evident as daylight.

He then tried to locate where the bullet had hit her and he noticed it had got stuck in her vest on her lower abdomen. He quickly ripped the vest off and pulled her shirt up slightly to see if the bullet had left any mark. Fortunately, there wasn't a big one, it was simply a small hole where the blood had clotted. The impact was what had made Hailey fall back and catch her breath, otherwise the injury was not life-threatening. Hailey's breathing had evened out now, but Jay was still looking at her intently, wanting to make sure she was absolutely fine. They shared a look that conveyed so many things; Hailey was silently apologising to him and Jay didn't know whether he should be angry with her, or hold her or tell her this is exactly what he was afraid of. But the moment passed as quickly as it had come and the ambulance had arrived now. Hailey was escorted into the ambulance and Jay went along with her.

At the hospital Will assured them that there was nothing to worry about and Hailey could be taken home. The good news was that the case was finally closed, they had arrested the supplier as well and all the pricks were thrown into lockup. That being completed, the team were free to head home. Finally Jay had decided what he felt towards Hailey, it was anger and a relief that she was fine. They drove to her place in silence, not wanting to have the discussion that was bound to take place in the truck. As they entered the apartment Jay wasted no time in starting, "We are going to talk about this Hailey."

She turned to look at him as she was the first one to enter the apartment. She sighed, not knowing what to say because for once she didn't have a suitable answer. Jay continued in his serious tone, "What the hell were you thinking?"

"Jay… Let's not do this, please," Hailey pleaded knowing fully well how this would end.

"Do what Hailey? I am just asking you a question because I am curious to know what was going on in your mind when you decided to get shot," he shot back, more angry than before.

"I did not decide to get shot Jay, it just happened. Why are you trying to make this into something it isn't?" she blurted, frustrated herself.

"Right, because getting shot is a daily routine," Jay said sarcastically.

Hailey knew this would only get ugly the further it continued so she decided to end it, "I am sorry. I will be more careful henceforth."

At those words Jay's anger subsided and he didn't know what more to say, because he was ready to fight, he wasn't ready to win so easily. But Hailey continued this time, "It's just after yesterday I have become super cautious about everything, because it doesn't help when Voight is breathing down your neck all the time."

"Yeah, I can relate to that," Jay said acknowledging her words. Then he suddenly said, "Let me see it."

For a brief moment Hailey wondered what he meant but she understood in the following moment and lifted her shirt slightly. Jay leaned down slightly to look at her wound and wasn't pleased to see that it was swelling gradually. He got up and couldn't stop himself from saying the following words, "Hailey… Don't ever do this again, please. It almost killed me when I heard that shot."

Hailey approached him now and placed her hands on his shoulder softly, assuring him, "I am sorry. It won't happen again."

Jay's heart was continuously melting and now he realised he needed more. He placed his hands softly on her cheeks and pulled her in for a passionate kiss. Hailey didn't resist at all, she let herself go immediately. She too needed this now and she was more than happy that Jay initiated it. They were making out for a few minutes, only stopping to catch their breaths. Then Jay reached for the buttons on her shirt and started opening them one by one. Soon enough her shirt was discarded on the floor and now it was her turn to lift his T-shirt over his head and throw it on the floor. Hailey was wearing a navy blue bra and it looked sexy on her. Jay didn't hesitate to unclasp it and let it drop to the ground. They were both chest naked now and the sight turned Jay on. She too turned to face him and there was a broad smile on her face. "That was too cute Jay," she said finally and resumed her laughing.

This time Jay too joined her and they laughed for a good while.
