Upstead (First Kiss)

Chapter 21

Hello guys! I am back with yet another chapter. I am going to warn you from before itself that this chapter is sad and even hurtful in some ways. And if I were to be honest, I would admit that I did cry while writing this one. If you guys feel even a little of the emotion and thought I put in here, I'll be delighted. Feel free to comment, and enjoy. :)

Her words were still reverberating in his mind and his heart suddenly ached. What did Hailey just tell him? And was this the truth? Because if it was, he didn't know how to react other than feeling greatly hurt and disappointed. Hailey sensed all of this and she moved away from his embrace and sat up facing him. Jay met her eyes and her fears were confirmed, he was hurt. He sat up too, really wondering what to tell her next. The fact that both of them were naked did not escape their notice. Finally Jay mustered enough courage to ask her, "What?"

And that one word was enough to crush Hailey's heart. She felt terrible and simply looked at one him, genuinely wondering what she could say in this moment. But Jay continued, still registering the information, "Hailey, why are you leaving? Is this because of Voight?"

He had hit the correct point and Hailey just stared at him, knowing now that there was nothing more to discuss. He understood her silence and looked away in surprise combined with disgust. So it had come down to this eventually, one of them had to leave Intelligence. But Jay wondered why did she have to sacrifice her career for Voight's rules? Then it hit him, he realised what the matter really was and said, "No, I am not letting you do that. You're not leaving because of me."

Hailey understood that Jay had understood everything in a matter of minutes and honestly she was glad. Because having to explain everything would have been too painful and strenuous. This way, everything was sorted, she would leave, Jay would know what was happening and there wouldn't be unnecessary heartaches. But she didn't realise that Jay was not going to let her do that at any cost. He wouldn't agree to this at all.

Hailey spoke finally, having composed herself, "Jay, please don't make this harder than it already is. We still have tonight to spend. And you have to leave in the morning."

Jay looked at her in surprise and spoke, "I am the one who is making things harder?" He placed his hands on her shoulders for emphasis, "Do you realise how hard this is for me Hailey?"

He was staring directly in her eyes and she was overwhelmed by his touch and emotions. She blinked to let the emotion pass. He continued, in an almost defeated voice, "Hailey, how did you even think I was going to let you do this?"

She approached him and placed her hands on his cheeks, "Because you are the most understanding person I know. And I know that you understand the consequences very well."

He pulled out of her touch and looked away and she knew he was angry, otherwise he would never act in such a manner. She tried to coax him, tried pulling his face in her hands but he refused, he didn't come. He just looked away. Then he got down from the bed and began looking for his clothes. He started dressing and Hailey sensed she had to intervene now. She too got down and dressed herself quickly. Once Jay was finished she saw him head towards the main door. She followed him and spoke, "Jay, where are you going?" concern and worry evident in her voice.

He turned to look at her for a moment and started walking again, this time Hailey grabbed his hand and stopped him, "Jay, if you're angry at me, scream at me. If you're mad, yell at me, but please say something Jay," desperation was evident in her voice and tears had formed in her eyes.

He looked at her for a moment and smiled sadly, saying, "Hailey I can never be angry at you. I'm just extremely hurt and disappointed."

The tears that had formed in her eyes flowed down now. Jay too was tearful, he didn't cry so often but when he did it was always related to Hailey, showing how much she meant to him. She approached him and hugged him, he didn't react. She held him tightly, crying on his chest but Jay didn't hold her. The only proof that she had he was affected by this was that she felt his lone tears fall on her hair. She stayed there hoping to get some reaction from him but he didn't move. Then gently he pushed her away and said softly, unable to control his emotions any longer, "I should go."

He turned and left without looking back. Hailey was standing there too shocked and numb to do anything. And before she could realise what was happening Jay had gone and she found herself rushing for the door. She opened it quickly and saw that he was nowhere to be seen, he was gone already. She shut the door gently and collapsed against it, back resting against it. She sat down face in her hands, tears streaming down her face at an accelerated pace. She was crying profusely in the silence of her UC apartment.

Jay walked to his truck in even steps, not showing one bit that he was breaking apart from within. He opened the door and sat in the driver's seat. He shut the door casually and looked ahead for a brief moment. He had kept it together for a long while, he had tried his best not to cry in front of her. But now he was alone and he let go, he held the steering and rested his head on it, weeping. He wept like a child and didn't care about anything. The sounds of his sobs and ragged breaths were protected in his truck and he continued in the same manner. What hurt him even more was that he hadn't reciprocated when Hailey had hugged him. He had wanted to hold her so badly but he just couldn't bring himself to do it. It had taken all the strength in him to be passive and not react.

The following morning Hailey woke up in her normal time but looking at herself in the mirror she realised she hadn't really slept. She had spent most of the night crying and sleep had come to her only in the early hours of the morning. She didn't know what to think about her and Jay's current situation. And the moment her mind thought of Jay, a fresh wave of tears appeared in her eyes. She had to focus on the case at hand, it was nearing its end. How the hell was she going to do that she didn't know. Marc, the guy who had tried to kiss her would probably be here any minute. And the moment this thought traversed her mind, her doorbell rang and Hailey jumped, shaken by the sudden sound. As she opened the door her breath stopped, a relief crossed her being for a fraction of a second but then only terror and fear filled her being. Jay was standing in front her, face bruised in places, T-shirt torn and full of dirt. He was wounded and her heart ached instantly. Jay too had observed her face and understood that she too had been crying the whole night. She managed after getting back her breath, "Hey."

But before she could continue, another figure appeared and she was shocked out of her bones. Thank God she hadn't said Jay. Marc was pointing a gun at the back of Jay's head and pushing him inside the apartment. Jay obliged, faltering in his steps because he was clearly hurt. Hailey was both furious and terrified. She screamed at Marc, "What the hell are you doing Marc?"

He turned towards her and smirked before saying, "I should be asking you the same question."

Hailey stole a quick glance at Jay who couldn't help her because he was tired and beat up. Did Marc know they were cops? That would literally be the end of everything. She retorted back, trying to seem as though she was fine, "What the hell are you talking about?"

Marc scoffed and smiled. Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out a bunch of photographs and threw them at her. As some flew around, Hailey tried to gather them all and meanwhile Marc was tying Jay to one of the poles that were present near the wall. As Hailey picked up the pictures and went through them a new panic nabbed at her insides and she felt as though she was going to faint. The photographs displayed her and Jay making out and having sex. How the hell had this happened and more importantly when the hell had this happened! She went through them again and realised, it was only the night before that these pictures were taken. Her first reaction was to glance at the tainted windows to her left.

"That's right, the pictures were taken from there," she heard Marc saying.

She looked at Jay who, it seemed already knew about this and was not thrilled one bit.

"So are you still going to say that he's your brother Riley?" Marc asked waving the gun at her.

The only good thing about this sentence was that it confirmed Marc didn't know their real identities and Hailey was going to make sure it remained that way.

"What do you want Marc," Hailey asked, realising that he had the upper hand.

"I want you," he said lust filling his eyes.

Internally Hailey was disgusted to her core, but she had to keep a straight face outside and she did just that. She just looked at him because this was not going to happen at any cost. And Marc had perhaps expected such a reaction, so he continued, "And if you don't I shoot this guy and expose these pictures."

Hailey was trapped and she didn't know how to come out of this enticement. Marc on the other hand had a lot of things to say, "By the way, who is this dude anyway?"

Hailey was not at all pleased by Jay being called a dude, but she said calmly, "He's my boyfriend."

"Oh, wow! So you are actually in love? Do you love him?" Marc asked finally.

"I do, more than he knows," she said looking at Jay.

This had caught Jay's attention and he was looking at her as well. Hailey continued, without being asked, "And he should also know that I would never hurt him unless I had absolutely no choice."

Their eyes locked and they could understand the deeper meanings of these words, but Marc was left with the surface meaning and he scoffed, "Enough of this crap Riley."

She was suddenly pulled out of her gaze and looked at him again. He continued with a big smile, "It's going to be fun having sex in front of your boyfriend Riley."

Hailey froze and Jay uttered finally, "What?"

"You shut up Ryan," he said pointing the gun at him. "You only get to watch, you can't speak."

Jay had to stop this at any cost, he couldn't let this happen, especially right in front of his eyes. Marc seemed to be in his world of fantasies, "You know, I saw you guys go at it yesterday and I was so turned on I cannot say. Riley, you really are good at this it seems. I can't wait to lay my hands on you."

Both Jay and Hailey were beyond disgusted. If they could go deaf they would, at least not having to hear this. Marc continued nonetheless, "I saw you Riley, you didn't let him move his hands for a long while. The way you teased him, I can't wait for that to happen to me. And when he took control, it was savage. The way he drove in you and the way your tits swayed. I can't wait to grab your tits and play with them Riley."

"Shut up! Just shut up! Shut your filthy mouth Marc!" screamed Jay trying to get out of his position with all his strength.

Hailey simply closed her eyes and cried internally. It was horrifying to even think that this animal was actually visualising her and Jay having sex and taking pleasure in it. And to top that, he wanted to do the same to her. Marc heard Jay's voice and approached him, "What did I just tell you? No talking. This is your last warning, you open your mouth again and I blow your head off."

Then he walked back to where he was standing earlier and placed his gun on the table. It was going to happen and neither Jay nor Hailey could do anything about it. He started walking towards her and instinctively she moved backwards. "Come on Riley, don't be shy," he said smiling and already unbuttoning his jeans.

As he came close enough to her, Hailey swung her hand and punched his face. He hadn't expected this and faltered back, holding his nose. He looked up with mean eyes and approached her vigorously. Before she could do anything else, he grabbed her hands and locked them behind her back, making her bend forward. He snarled in her ear, "What do you think of yourself bitch! I was going to be nice but now I'm going to do it my way."

He dragged her to the bed and pushed her forcefully, himself landing on her in an instant. She shoved at his chest, kicked his legs and tried to free herself but he was stronger. He bent his face to kiss her but she had shut down, she wasn't going to let this happen, again.

From the other side Jay was trying his best to free himself. He was pulling, pushing, trying almost anything to get out of his position. All the while he could hear Hailey's whimpers and gasps and they were nowhere near what she sounded like when she was with him. The animal was hurting her and there wasn't much time anymore. He pulled one last time and the rope that bound his hands to the pole snapped and he let out a loud cry of pain. He didn't care about his pain, he got up immediately and saw Marc on Hailey, trying to touch her everywhere. He grabbed him from his hair and T-shirt and yanked him down. Marc was surprised because he hadn't seen Jay come. He tried to fight back but Jay didn't give him a chance. He punched and beat the crap out of the guy. Marc was bleeding a lot already and he was about to lose consciousness. Hailey arrived soon, she had composed herself, lunging towards Jay and trying to stop him. But Jay was in other world altogether. He wasn't listening to what she was saying or didn't even seem to know where he was. Hailey was shouting beside him, "You're going to kill him Jay!"

She tried to grab his hands from behind and stop him. Finally Jay understood what was happening and he stopped. He sensed Hailey's presence behind him and halted all his movements. He didn't want to hurt her. Hailey rested her head on his back softly, still holding him from behind. He was panting and breathing heavily. He calmed down a little and removed Hailey's hands from their grip on his and got up abruptly, leaving her there. There was something about Jay, he just wasn't himself. It felt as though he had shut down completely and was never going to let anyone in. He dragged Marc's body to the pole where he had been tied and tied the prick's hands. Hailey followed him in quiet steps and stood far and observed him. He leaned against the table and said, looking down, he had sensed she had followed him, "I think you should end this operation here."

She walked towards him slowly and tried to look into his eyes, but couldn't because he was looking down. She spoke softly, "Jay, what's wrong? Look at me."

He didn't, he simply said again, "End this here."

"I am," she assured him, still approaching him.

He simply nodded, still looking at the ground. Hailey spoke, "Jay, what's the matter with you?"

He didn't respond so she tried to reach out to him but he retreated, never looking at her, eyes fixed on the ground, "Hailey, please… Just please… I can't right now… Please," he said in a whisper that he could barely hear.

But Hailey heard him clearly and stopped immediately. She knew that tone because she herself used it when she wanted to convey something like this. She didn't force him, she simply said, "You're hurt, let me at least clean it up and put a bandage."

He hesitated for a moment then spoke, "It's fine, I'll just go to Med."

Hailey looked up at him for a moment then said, "Alright."

She really didn't want to push him. He needed time and he deserved it. She was not going to ask him anything until he himself was ready to speak. But she knew one thing for sure, the previous night had changed a lot of things for them. Now whether they were good or bad, only time would tell. He stood there a moment longer then turned to leave, again without looking at her or even saying he was going. Hailey just watched him go, unable to do anything at the moment. Just as he opened the door he saw a figure already standing at the entrance. He looked up to realise it was Voight and Jay was dumbfounded. He didn't know what to say or how to react. Voight simply stared at him and went past him and entered the apartment. The sudden commotion caused Hailey to look up from her work, she had entered the bedroom and was looking at a few files. She saw Voight and her breath hitched in her throat. She walked out towards him and saw Jay still standing at the door, also numb from this experience. They were caught and there was no excuse this time.
