They rushed through the palace, making their way to a safe room. Amberly glanced over her shoulder and he saw her eyes widen.
Before he could look back, she turned around, running behind him. He heard the gun shot and felt her crumple to the floor. He whirled around.
"Amberly!" Her name tore from his throat..
The gun went off a second time, and he felt a piercing pain in his chest. As his legs gave out beneath him, he reached for her, drew her close. Even now, she was the calm at the center of his storm.
