The girl with claws -

Chapter three -

My eyes blink open, my breathing heavy, daylight flooding my pupils causing me to blink harshly. I groan and sit up. My senses coming to life, my mind trying to tell myself that it was all just a nightmare, my breathing slows back to normal and I glance at the clock, 8am. Probably time to get up.

I stretch, claws extending as I do so, clawing at the bedsheet. A yawn escapes my mouth as I stumble to the door of my room, hearing the footsteps and breathing before the knock even happens

"Yes?" I murmur as I swing the door open, Logan stands on the other side, holding a clean change of clothes for me, a simple pair of jogging bottoms and a blue shirt. "Thought you might like these. Come down for breakfast when yer ready kid" Logan says, shoving the clothes into my arms, I nod my thanks, and push the door closed.

Once I'm dressed, I head down to the kitchen, on the way there I pass many students, gaining strange looks from all of them, some of them pitying, some scared, and some full of pure hatred.

I ignore them all, how they felt wasn't my problem, they can hate me all they want.

Marie sits in the kitchen alongside Logan, laughing over something whilst eating. The laughing dies down when I walk in and there's a slightly awkward silence before Marie pipes up "Good morning!" she exclaims. "Good night's sleep?" she questions. I pause, not used to the interactions, and then subtly nod "Yes. I guess". I share a look with Logan, he sighs, I know his feral hearing would have picked up on my movements during my sleep from the nightmare and he gives me a smile, not a pitying smile though, an understanding one. I grab a coffee and sit on the other side of the counter, having so much sudden freedom felt strange, one minute I was being kept as Strykers little pet, the next I'm sat in a kitchen in some mutant school free to do what I liked.

"Xavier wants to run a through things through with you after you've finished. Nothing to worry about, just about basic rules of staying here" Logan informs, I nod, and look down to my coffee. "Am I safe here?" I mutter, Logan sighs "You're as safe as you possibly can be, we're here to protect you, and help you find your daughter, okay?" With a slight smile, he looks into my eyes, trying his absolute best to reassure me, his hand resting very near to mine.

"Thank you" I whisper, even being a level five feral mutant, I still need to feel safe and protected sometimes. I'm not invincible!

Ten minutes later and i'm stood again in Xavier's office, I sit in front of him as he assess's me.

"Logan will teach you self defence whilst you're here, starting immediately. Now lets see here... Level five feral, with enchanced senses, slight telepathy, adamantium bones, just like our Logan. And with the ability to turn into, a tiger?" He exclaims, seeming somewhat impressed at my abilities. I nod, "yes sir"

"You don't see many female ferals nowadays. They're rare. And a level five one as well. Tell me, have you found your mate yet?" Xavier asks, a puzzled look takes over my face "No? What do you mean by mate?" I wonder

Xavier smiles "humans have boyfriends or girlfriends, ferals have mates, it's a strong bond which ties the two of you together. Now because there's less females than male ferals, often more than one male feral with have a bond with a female. But seeing as you haven't found your mate yet, there's nothing to worry about. Now there's not many rules here living at the mansion. Just be back before 11pm, and no violence or aggressive behaviour towards students or staff members. Understood?" he enquires.

"yes sir" I confirm, and the old man smiles. "And please, call me Charles. Sir doesn't suit me"

I nod, "Okay... Charles"

"Now as for the last thing, your name, we can't keep calling you weapon 12 now can we? I think you should choose your own name, what would you like it to be?" he enquires.

I pause, I cannot remember what my name was before the memory wipe, and the only name I've ever known was weapon 12. I sigh, thinking through all the possible options.

"Lyra" I breathe. "Call me Lyra"

Xavier smiles warmly, "It's nice to meet you Lyra."

Logans POV -

He sits on the gym bench, waiting for the girl to arrive, Charles has instructed him to teach her more self defence.

Damn, what was that girl doing to him? The moment he laid eyes on her last night he felt this immense pull towards her, like she was all he needed, he felt a bond, a connection. Something he hasn't felt before, at least not so quickly! What is wrong with him? What he is unsure of, is if she feels the same way. Well there's only one way to find out... he thinks.

No, she's only just got here, she's been through a terrible time and she needs his help! Not him lusting after her!

He sighs, his head buried in his hands.

Lyra's POV -

I stride up to Logan in the gym, he stands and smiles a nervous welcome.

"how'd it go with Xavier kid?" He questions, I raise an eyebrow at being called 'kid', And smile faintly.

"Fine, my new name is Lyra" I remark, feeling slight excitement over my new name, finally something to be called other than 'weapon 12'

"Beautiful name.." Logan breathes, making me blush faintly. "ready to start?" He continues, coughing slightly.

He steps backwards slipping some boxing pads on his hands, "We're gonna start out simple for ya now" He starts.

I smirk, he doesn't know what he's let himself in for. I'm stronger than I look.

"When you're ready!" Logan exclaims, and I grin, and throw a hard punch to one of the pads, sending Logan stumbling back a few steps. "Woah girl! You got some strength in you!" Logan breathes, "Maybe I've started you out a little too easy."

"How about some plain hand to hand combat? See how you get on?" Logan asks, I smile and nod. "Sounds perfect" I breathe.

An hour later of vigarous training, Logan and I were still going at it, throwing and dodging punches and kicks, whereas he's a lot of brute force, I am agile and swift. Our skills complimenting each others well.

"You did good back there kid" Logan praises as we walk back to our rooms. "Thank you, you didn't do too badly yourself!" I laugh ever so slightly.

"See you later... Lyra"

A week later -

I've been staying at the mansion for a week now, and so far so good, I've made friends with Marie and Ororo and I'm getting on well with my training with Logan, Logan's nice, although seems a bit weird with me sometimes, like he's in this daze...

Jean doesn't particularly like me, and I haven't spoken to Scott much or any of the other x men members.

I sigh as I walk towards my bedroom, it's fairly late and I've had a busy day, Marie had insisted that I go shopping with her and we spent all day traipsing around the shops. I soon discovered that shopping was definitely not my idea of fun.

"Hey Lyra!" A call echoes out behind me and I smell the musky scent of Logan jogging to catch up with me. He walks up alongside me and puts an arm around me. Weird, I think.

"Well done with your training today, you did great" he praises, a smile on his face. We stop at my bedroom door and I faintly smile at him, "Uh, thanks Logan" I mutter, my breathing speeding up slightly at the closeness he's standing at.

"Goodnight Lyra" He whispers, and quickly brings his face down to mine, pressing his lips against mine with passion, I pause, freezing on the spot, not knowing how to react. How long has he been wanting to do this? I never knew he felt this way, even his scent hadn't changed!

He pulls away, a little flustered, breathing heavily.
"Goodnight Logan" I breathe, before hurriedly darting into my room, wanting to escape the awkwardness as soon as possible.

I hear Logan linger outside the door for a minute or two, before he moves off down the hallway. I sigh heavily, not sure what to make of his sudden advances. I see him as more of a brother than anything else. I just don't want to let him down, I guess I'll have to talk to him tomorrow about it. But until then, I need sleep!

There's a scratching sound outside, And I pause, my ears pricking up, my heartbeat speeds up and my hairs stand on end. I glance at the door, judging how much time I have to run to it, Logan definitely wouldn't have enough time to get here if I shouted for him, so I need another plan, I can tell I have a matter of seconds before I have company in my room, having stupidly left my window open from earlier I can hear claws climbing the walls of the mansion.

I lengthen my claws as a huge shadowed figure jumps in through the window, he stands tall, towering over me, wearing a black trench coat, the man grins, showing long, sharp, pointed canines at me, a murderous glare in his eyes. He has a short military style hair cut, with mutton chops round his cheeks. We both pause, our scents mixing in the air, I sniff, he smells like Logan, but muskier, he smells angry, but with a hint of arousal, and lust. I feel weird, like I'm suddenly attracted to him, like we have a connection even. And judging by the smell of him, he's thinking the same way.

His confusion disappears, and his claws lengthen. He's another level five feral mutant. He snarls, And I do the same.

"Hello frail" He purrs. Advancing towards me, I can tell he wants to to run, play the part of prey and him predator. But that's just not me, I don't run from anyone. Especially not an overgrown pussycat!

I ignore my strange instincts to submit to him and be his. And lunge, claws out and teeth lengthened. He does the same, and we clash into each other, claws slashing and teeth snarling, I dodge the majority of his attacks, only getting hit a couple of times, my slashes healing fairly quickly.

My claws dive into his stomach and he roars, before shoving me backwards and running at me, diving his sharp teeth into my shoulder, I yelp in pain before pushing him off. He's quick, and bigger and stronger than Logan is, he hits me hard on the head, and I stumble back, dazed and dizzy from his attack.

Logan slams into the room, breaking the lock on the door "LYRA!" he screams, but before he can do anything, The large feral grabs me, slings me over his shoulder and jumps out the window.
