Chapter seven
Black Doom
It was the very early hours of the morning aboard the ARK and a very stressed out professor was in the middle of designing the eclipse cannon after finding some flaws when suddenly without warning a huge and terrifying looking alien appeared on a semi big screen right in front of Gerald. At first Gerald jumped back in fear but then recognised the creature to be non other then Black Doom, Shadow's biological father. With a deep and powerful voice, Black Doom spoke to the aged human in a disgusted and sickened tone.
"Gerald I demand that you give me a couple of minutes with my son alone, I wish to discuss an important matter that needs urgent attention."
Gerald was taken back a little at the way Black Doom spoke, he wasn't used to being spoken to in such a hostile way. Sure the commander of GUN would talk to him with a small level of hatred towards him but not on this type of scale.
"N-no, Shadow is resting after a rough afternoon and doesn't need to know of your existence as of yet. I'm sure what ever urgent matter has arisen it can wait…" Gerald replied with a firm yet somewhat shocked tone as he couldn't believe he managed to summon up the courage to actually deny the warlord his request.
"You deny me access to my son you pitiful human. If you wont willingly retrieve Shadow then I will do it myself." Doom bitterly spat out then waved a hand over the screen that glowed a light blue.
Before Gerald could reply to a very annoyed and angered alien, the door to the smallish lab opened to revel a some what sleepy looking hedgehog with a dazed look within his eyes. Black Dooms hand stopped glowing and Shadow blinked a few times, looking around in confusion as to how the hell he got here. Both Shadow and Professor Gerald locked eyes in utter confusion as Shadow slowly and cautiously approached Gerald and the strange alien on the screen.
"Shadow! G-go back to bed, there is nothing to see here…Off you go." Gerald ushered with panic in his tone not wanting Shadow to discover his true origins.
Shadow gave the professor a strange look but shrugged then turned and walked out of the lab. Gerald sighed thanking the gods that Shadow didn't question and just did what he was actually told first hand but all relief left him as Black Doom growled on the screen.
"I don't think so come back now Shadow…" Doom roared out in anger as he watched Shadow continuing to walk, clearly unfazed upon Dooms tone.
Dooms fears were coming true, his so called biological son was completely ignoring his commands. This was the very reason Black Doon decided to 'check in' on his hybrid son and those despicable humans who were raising him, clearly there were signs of disloyalty towards himself…this was defiantly going to change and tonight too. Doom again raised his hand and the same blue glow was back. Shadow froze in his tracks out side of the lab, he turned around and walked back towards Black Doom with that dazed look, completely ignoring Gerald this time and stopped in front of the screen. The glow died down and Shadow once again found himself in an unwanted place, confusion plastered all over his face as he looked up to the alien on the big screen.
"Shadow, never disobey your father again or there will be highly painful consequences…" Doom warning his hedgehog son in an angered tone, watching Shadow's eyes widen in disbelief.
"F-father but how can that be…professor what is he talking about?" Shadow shockingly announced then turned to look at his creator with a questionable look.
Gerald looked back at his creation and sighed knowing full well he will have to explain in more detail of Shadows true creation. Unfortunately Black Doom beat him to it but he was sure as heaven and hell he will not leave Doom to explain the entire story, knowing he will probably twisted it in some way.
"I'm utterly surprised Gerald didn't tell you of me Shadow, leave it to a human to think of themselves and themselves alone…Gerald was in development of the ultimate Lifeform but couldn't seem to crack the genetics of it in order to survive on its own, just look at the prototype…" Doom started then gave the professor a smug look as he mentioned that freaky lizard thing, abomination to nature in his opinion.
"Excuse me but I had created a life and was on a break through before you appeared…" Gerald stated with slight anger towards the horrific alien warlord.
"Yes that is true human but without my help you will still be rattling your tiny little brain…" Doom replied with the same anger but more smug towards the end of his sentence.
"How dare you, I have you know I'm one of the Earths smartest humans and…" Gerald went but was cut short by a voice that wasn't Black Dooms or his own.
"Will you both stop acting like kids and stop point scoring…Err father, if I should call you that, could you please continue your story." Shadow shouted out then faced the screen ready to listen to the rest of the story.
"I will gladly continue my son…" Doom replied in a strange yet almost caring tone towards the hybrid.
All part of the plan to gain Shadow's trust of course. Well that's what Black Doom told himself.
"As I was saying before I was rudely interrupted…he couldn't quite crack the genetics in your creation and no matter how hard he tried the human just couldn't figure it out…so much for being smart I might add." Doom slightly chuckled in a mocking way.
Gerald's anger was getting to the point of almost bursting out as the insults were thrown in his face, if it wasn't for Shadow then he might of gone through with the though of cussing that big headed alien and shutting the screen off.
"But I suppose Shadow does deserves to know the truth." Gerald though as he tried to curve his anger, no need to give Shadow any reason to resent him any more then he might already.
"I was passing this strange metal thing floating in orbit of the Earth, which I now know it as a space station, and as usual curiosity got the better of me so I teleported aboard. I happen to have landed in the same room as the so called great absent minded Professor over there. Realising I arrived undetected I hidden within the shadows, listening to the human scientist talking to himself. I over heard everything, the problems of the prototype, how Gerald was finding it difficult in cracking the code of your DNA and the stresses of deadlines from their government. That's when I had the idea of aiding the human in his research in creating you shadow." Black Doom explained but before he could finish he was once again interrupted.
"Why?" Was all Shadow asked in a calm and collected tone, not letting the warlord know of any hidden anxiety he was feeling. Also feeling slightly suspicious in his biological father's actions.
This took both Black Doom and Gerald by surprise. Gerald formed a small devious grin knowing too well Black Doom's reason for Shadow's creation, it was to benefit himself where as his reason was far more greater and less selfish. Doom was unsure how to word his answer with out angering the hedgehog because if his hunch is correct the hybrid Black Arms took after him more so then his hedgehog side.
"I aided the scientist in creating the Ultimate Lifeform, you Shadow because I wanted a son a heir, if you will, to assist me in many years to come and one day take over from me in looking after my, your brothers and your future home. I needed a son who is equal to myself in every aspect therefore I helped by supplying that oh so needed genetic make up in the form of my everlasting blood." Black Doom concluded using the most sincere tone he could master up without making himself break down in disgust at showing any level of caring especially in front of a vile human.
"Poppycock the only thing your interested in is destruction and murder…" Gerald started to announce but a small voice took over the spotlight.
"Then why have his help at all if that's all he's interesting in…does that make me the same as him a destructive and murderous being bent on destroying and manipulating others to do my bidding." Shadow asked in a terrified yet quiet tone, looking into the professor's eyes pleadingly.
"Shadow…if you choose that path then I wont lie to you, you will end up like him but assessing your behaviour I've come to the conclusion that you are in no way like your biological father far from it infact. You know what is right and what is wrong and with my teachings and guidance you will never be like Black Doom." Gerald said to his creation in a sincere and honest tone, ending with a soft smile.
"Bah you don't know me retched human, you have no clue to my intentions and beliefs. You humans are all the same, you take one look at me and assume I'm out to kill…" Black Doom defended in an annoyed tone and had a right angered look to go with it.
"Why else would you make me promise that Shadow would deliver you the chaos emeralds in 50 years time? Humm…" Gerald spat out feeling a type of rage buried down deep inside then added in a more angered tone "I will not allow you to corrupt Shadow, not while I'm still breathing."
"Corruption has already begun…by you vile human." Doom roared out in utter rage glaring daggers at the old man.
By this time Shadow didn't know what to do, he watched both creatures arguing over his future, both having strong views of one another. On one hand he had this alien creature claming to be his biological father, wishing for Shadow to join him and his so called brothers in years to come. On the other hand he has the professor, the one who is raising him and teaching him all he knows about the world and doing what's right. Shadow was feeling so overwhelmed by the new sudden events and thoughts that the only thing he knew he could do right now is to do what he did the very day he was awakened…he ran.
Shadow ran, ignoring the calls of his name from Gerald as they echoed down the hallway until they could no longer be heard. He didn't stop running until he reached the other end of the ARK and hid away in one of the storage rooms. Leaning against the wall on the far side of the room, shadow slid down slowly so he was sitting on the floor with a hopeless look on his face. Shadow closed his eyes trying to forget about what happened a moment ago in the lab when suddenly he heard that alien's voice inside of his head.
Shadow don't threat, come back to the lab it is important I speak to you. The professor has left the room…come speak with your father before I have to leave…please.
Dooms voice inside Shadow's head sounded much more softer and calm, trying to gain Shadows trust he then added in a caring tone…
Please my son you must understand I have but minutes before my means of communication is cut off permanently.
Shadow sighed and got up off the floor. He walked out of the storage room and dashed back to the lab where his biological father was waiting on the communication screen.
"Alright I'll hear you out on what you wish to say but understand this if its something I'm likely to dislike I will not hesitate to cut you off completely, which includes in many years to come. So if I were you I'll think hard on what it was you want to say…" Shadow calmly stated with arms crossed over his chest and a stern look of seriousness on his muzzle.
Black Doom was slightly thrown back by Shadow's sudden seriousness and frowned at what Shadow said to him, 'clearly siding with the humans' Doom thought as he again carefully worded his sentence.
"I wish to make a promise with you and no it has nothing to do with you going on a wild goose chase collecting those damn chaos emeralds the professor mentioned…it's a far more personal promise between father and son. I need you to promise that no matter what the future holds for the both of us in the next 50 years or so, that you will come willingly with me and live among me and your brothers aboard the Black comet. Please Shadow I hate our family split up like this, you living here so far away from me and your siblings…when I come back in 50 years you will come home with me wont you, my son." Black Doom asked in an almost pleading way while keeping eye contact with the young hedgehog.
Shadow was the one to break eye contact with his alien father, deep in though analyzing every word, every feature on Black Dooms face as he spoke. Knowing he hasn't got much time left to decide and finding nothing malicious to his words, shadow softened his look and uncrossed his arms then remade eye contact with his father.
"Yes I will come with you, I promise." Shadow promised his father in a soft tone and giving off a light grin.
"I'm very glad to hear this Shadow and just one more thing don't mention this to the humans, I don't want them turning you against me…good I must go now Shadow. Good bye my son I shall return for you in 50 years." Doom announced in a fatherly tone, now feeling a huge weight lifted off his shoulders.
"Of course I wont, I'll be here waiting for your return…good bye, father" Shadow replied before the monitor went blank and Black Dooms face vanished for the next 50 years.
Shadow left the lab not long after the alien left and he wondered down the corridor towards his room. Unknown to him Gerald was waiting patiently for him there and becoming anxious with every passing minute until slow foot steps were heard. The door to Shadow's room opened to revel the hedgehog himself. Shadow gasped at seeing one of his creators sitting on the end of the bed with a slightly worried look in his eyes.
"Shadow are you alright, I know what happened tonight must have been a huge shock to you and I want you to know I would have told you about Black Doom when I felt you were ready to know and…" Gerald said in a concerned tone towards his creation but was cut short by a soft and understanding voice of the Ultimate Lifeform.
"Its alright professor I know you would have. I in no way resent you for not telling me about Black Doom and if its alright with you I would like to forget about him and for as long as it is possible, forget that he exists at all." Shadow announced to his human creator with a sincere smile.
"If that is what you with Shadow, I'll leave you to get some rest. I'll see you in the morning, say about 9ish ok…good night." Gerald replied with a warm smile and made his way out of shadows room to leave him to rest.
"Good night professor." Shadow lightly whispered as the professor walked out of his room.
The door closed shut and when Gerald knew Shadow couldn't see or hear him he fist pumped the air and whispered "yes" under his breath thinking, "score one for the humans."
