Summary: Where Kakyoin and Jotaro have their first conversation?
Jotaro was right; never again will she board an airplane with Mr. Joestar.
Kakyoin was glad when they all agreed to take the boat to Hong Kong instead of the helicopter. She had a feeling that they all came to the same conclusion as she. On top of being jet lagged she had earned herself cut to the mouth. Thankfully it wasn't that bad, she'll just have to deal with it later.
She stood at the end of the boat's deck where the density of people was a lot less and watched as the plane got farther and farther away. The sputter of the engine was louder in the back, a small price to pay to be alone. The wind whipped her long hair into a frenzy causing it to unravel from the neat two braids she placed them in. She'll have to deal with that later too.
It was ten minutes into the boat ride when a memory of her sketchbook flashed in her mind. A sinking feeling rose at the pity of her stomach.
Oh no
Frantically, she picked up her duffle bag and started to rummage through it. She didn't pack much, just her necessities, so it didn't take her long to realize that it wasn't there.
Fuck
She didn't think she would start losing her stuff so soon. She thought about all the unfinished sketches and references she accumulated in that book lost somewhere in the ocean. She tried to remember the last time she used her sketchbook.
She was drawing Avdol's jewelry. He was kind enough to let her examine them. He told her that each piece was a present from his family members. She was shocked to feel the weight of them when he handed them over. He laughed and explained that they were all made of solid gold.
"Wow Avdol that must be worth a lot of money" she said while studying the intricate designs on his necklace. The level of skill to bend and shape them into these smooth, complex shapes excited her.
He laughed at her claim "Yes they are, but I would never sell them. Back home it's a custom to buy gold as a show of affection. Some of these pieces are family heirlooms passed down from generation to generation. They mean a great deal to me."
"That's amazing! The work on the designs are incredible."
"Some of them have islamic scripture to ward off the evil eye" he explained as he pointed out the lines that made up the letters of Arabic calligraphy .
Quickly, she started to sketch the designs into her drawing book to save as a reference for later.
Then she dozed off. Leaving her drawing book in the pocket of the seat.
Shit, shit, shit. This can't be happening.
"Hey, what are you doing?"
She turned around. The dark haired girl stood besides her, eyes barely visible underneath her cap.
"Oh, hey Jotaro I- uh… I'm looking for my sketchbook" she looked down at her possessions in her bag hoping that the book might appear before her eyes. Her mouth tugged downwards " I can't find it in my bag". Defeated, she closed her bag and looked up at the other girl, a sad smile playing at her lips "I think I forgot it in the airplane"
" A drawing book?" she replied. Her brows furrowed slightly as if she was trying to recall something. After a few seconds she said "Is it leather bound?"
Kakyoin's eyes widened "Yes, how did you know?" she doesn't remember showing Jotaro her book nor did she ever mention it.
The taller girl did not reply, instead she slid her hand in the pocket of her loose fitting pants and pulled out her sketchbook.
Relief washed over her as soon as her fingers touched her book. She quickly flipped through the pages, checking for any damage. When finding none, she allowed herself to relax. She knew it was impractical to get worked up over a draw book. If she wanted to she could have bought a new one and tried to replicate most of it, but she had always been attached to her drawings, she still hid most of them at home in the back of her closet. She would always go back to look through them, to remember parts of herself she kept or discarded. They acted as a record of her life when she had no one to share it with.
"God Jotaro, where did you find it?"
Jotaro's eyes darted away for a breif second. "I saw a book on the floor close to where you and Avdol were sitting when we went back to grab our stuff and I picked it up"
Kakyoin smiled. Maybe she was wrong to assume they wouldn't get along. It's true she had her doubts here and there but this had removed any uncertainty she had before.
"Thank you Jotaro. This means so much to me"
The other girl pulled down her cap, obscuring her face in shadow.
"Did you look in it?" asked Kakyion, her brow arching elegantly.
If the red head wasn't so observant she would have missed the slight waiver of jotaro's eyes.
So she did look through it.
"Yeah, I didn't mean to. It was open when I found it." she said, not quite looking at her. Her mouth was drawn to a line, her brows furrowed. She looked as intimidating as ever.
A slight blush crept up kakyoin's neck. She never showed anyone her art work before, well, she never had anyone to show her art work to. Most of her inner personal thoughts were in there, taking form as a line or a splash of color, it made her nervous that someone other than herself had seen it.
As if sensing the red heads distress, quickly she added "I only saw sketches of Avdol's necklace nothing more"
"I see," Kakyoin said, not looking at her.
"Your drawing was nice. The detail was cool" Jotaro nonchalantly. Her body stood erect, towering above her, hands pressed into her pockets. She could see the tension in her arms as the muscles flexed underneath her jacket. If it weren't for the words she had just received Kakyoin would have assumed she had offended the tall woman. Yet she was flattered that she had gotten a compliment, and from Jotaro none of the less. Was Jotaro trying to be nice? The tension on her face said otherwise.
Maybe Jotaro was trying to be friendly seeing as they're the only two teenagers on this trip.
"Thank you, I asked him to let me see the designs so I can use it as a reference for another piece I'm working on"
After a few seconds of silence she asked "What are you working on?"
She panicked, she didn't think she'd ask. She could feel the blood rising to her face.
"Well I-uh Hierophant is a bit bossy sometimes, it's just that they … umm-uh..." she stopped herself and chuckled " I'm not even making sense." She took a deep breath and started over "So when I was younger I used to draw Hierophant all the time. They would get so excited over the picture I drew that I decided every once in a while I would make a portrait for them. Lately they've been very picky and demanding so it's been hard for me to find ideas, but when I showed them the designs for Avdol's braclets they got ecstatic."
As if the stand knew that she was talking about them, they appeared. They're tendrils wrap around her waist as it layed it's head on her shoulder.
They are trying to comfort her, how sweet.
She smiled tenderly at her stand, they always knew what she needed.
"They might be a pain in the ass when they're picky but honestly my art has improved drastically because of them" she continued.
Hierophant cocked it's head to the side staring at her with an intensity that only she knew the meaning of.
"What" she said smiling "don't give me that look you are a pain in the ass when you want to be"
The green stand made a noise that could have been a grunt of disagreement.
Kakyoin placed her hand on her stand's face affectionately, a form of a half hearted apology. Hierophant nuzzled into it and purred. She had almost forgotten Jotaro in the presence of her stand and blushed slightly at the display of affection.
She had looked up to find the other girl staring.
"You two seem pretty close" the dark haired girl said
"Well I've had Hierophant for as long as I remember, they're my closest friend" My only friend she added to herself. Her hands played with Hierophant's tendrils, a habit she did when she'd get nervous.
"I've only had Star for about a week" she leaned on the taffrail and watched the waves that broke on the side of the boat. " We don't really speak, it works out for both of us"
"Oh…" Kakyoin didn't know what to say. She couldn't imagine a world where she didn't have Hierophant, yet alone not talk to them. She knew that Jotaro wasn't much of a talker, so it would be common sense that her stand would be the same.
Jotaro pulls out a cigarette from her pocket and swiftly lights smoke blows straight to Kakyoin's face, disorienting her from her surroundings. She leaned on the taffrail next to Jotaro, bringing her body closer to hers. She could see the curve of her neck clearly from where she stood, her short ebony hair framing the tan skin elegantly. Kakyoin had the sudden urge to sketch it in her book. She almost did.
She wondered why Jotaro had come to the back of the boat. Was she escaping the crowd? Did she come here to smoke? Or was she looking for a distraction. It could be all of the above. She didn't mind sharing the space with Jotaro, she didn't expect her to talk. They stood there in comfortable silence, a few inches apart, the ashes of the cigarette the only indication of time passing. This was nice, she didn't mind this.
"This is annoying" Jotaro spat, throwing her cigarette on the floor and crushing it with her heel "How far are we from Hong Kong"
"I think I see the skyline of the city. But I'm not to sure"
"It is the skyline"
The sun rose high above the sky, penetrating the city with overwhelming light.
