Chapter 37.
So I am not always sure what I should or shouldn't make a notation for. You've made it this far so I am going to assume we have learned together most of the basic Mando'a I use in my writing… Which is mostly swearing, brother, food and drink. Let's not analyse me as a person based on these facts alone. :D As always, please enjoy the conclusion of this filler arc. After this, we get back to the main thing you all came for. Cheers and enjoy. Last edited on June 1st, 2016.
They didn't reach the med bay fast enough.
Torian would be fine. That guy was always fine.
Mako pushed Kevain and his wards aside in a frenzy as two Mandalorians laid Raidre down. She had dosed Raidre with as much the stuff already that she had on her, but the injury to the head was dire.
Wear helmets kids!
Mako's mind darted from one idea to the next, away from assessing her emotional distress. She couldn't be distressed right now. They laid her down on the bad, facing down so that Mako could assess properly.
She didn't want to assess.
It had been bad enough to accidentally touch the back of her head and feel how soft it was.
Heads were not made soft.
Mako stared at the mass of gored flesh and she went numb.
"How is she still alive?"
Mako didn't know if she had spoken or if someone else had. She hooked up Raidre with two more lines of Kolto, directly to her carotid arteries.
"This is going to be nasty. If you don't have the stomach for it, leave now."
A couple of the guys ran for it once given permission. Reva pulled Kevain's curtain shut but remained, as did Ruda. Doga pulled his own curtain around himself. Mako tried not to laugh.
"Ruda, make sure Gault makes a call to our doctor."
Ruda nodded and bounded off, she closed the med bay door behind her. Mako looked at Reva, the Mandalorian was white as a sheet.
"You don't have to stay."
"You're going to need help."
Mako shook. "I don't know how much I will be able to do."
Reva nodded. "Then let's get started."
The girls nodded to each other and Mako stripped, or rather, threw off her clothes as fast as possible as Reva helped her into sterile scrubs and such things. They did they best they could, but it was nowhere near sterile enough for brain surgery. But they were short on time. Even with two direct lines of Kolto, Raidre had begun to fade.
Corridan paced as best as he could with a broken tibia. He'd lost all feeling to that leg a long while ago. For now, he just used a single crutch so as not aggravate his broken bone. Torian had been knocked out on the way here with all of Mako's sedatives. Which was good, because he was on the verge of losing his shit.
Gault had gone to get the bounty in, and to make a call to a Dr. Megadol. Corridan had no idea why that name sounded familiar, but it did.
Mako finally came out in a half state of dress. Corridan looked away.
"How is she?"
Mako sighed. "I won't know until Megadol gets here. She's alive for now."
She walked to him. "Sit."
He bid as she commanded. She frowned as she undid the bindings on his leg. "Have you been pacing this entire time?"
Corridan felt a cold pang of fear. "No?"
Mako looked him directly in the eye as she began to apply pressure to his broken bone. Eyes unblinking, she used an index to press directly at the break. Corridan inhaled sharp and eyes rolling in pain.
"Does that hurt?"
Corridan gritted his teeth as cold sweat began to poor down his temple. "A little."
She punched his shoulder, he was glad he was sitting. "What the frack man?! Why you make my life harder!?"
He laboured his breath. "Please, don't kill me."
She put her hands on her hips. " I should!"
Corridan brought his hands together. "Please."
She slapped his hands away. "Enough. I ran out of anaesthetic, so just shut up while I set it."
Corridan groaned. Reva came out as well with a platter of tools, she passed him a pencil as she walked by. She looked like she was about to die from holding in laughter. Corridan glared with all the furry of his command at her. She giggled and sped away. He was turning to yell at her when Mako punched him again.
"Stop moving!"
She pulled his leg out straight and with a gentleness that she had thus far not shown him. She took the pencil from him and shoved it in his mouth. He almost swallowed his tongue as she did so.
Mako pulled out her datapad and viewed the bones in Corridan's leg. She looked between him and the pad.
"You're lucky, it's clean."
She took a syringe and shoved it in his thigh. "Antibiotics and what numbing agents I have left. It's not enough but it will keep you from squealing like a girl."
Corridan began to protest, but Mako put her hand up, an index wagging. "Ah! Ah! Keep still and quiet while I make sure that Torian remains in a coma, you can stay put until that stuff kicks in."
Torian was good, still stable even though he still had a piece of the droid in his chest. It's never safe to remove foreign objects from bodies on the field. The infection rate was insane, not to mention that there was no way to do transfusions in the field. Nathan and Davain helped her bring Torian in. By help her, they carried him in for her while she held the door. They laid him down on a fresh and empty slab and They helped her dismantle his kit. The tentacle had pierced Torian's armour at such a high speed that it had created a tight seal, but then Torian had gone the extra mile and had melted it shut. It made it hard to dismantle, but it had also protected him from foreign bacteria.
The guys inched away. Mako sighed.
"Just go."
They ran.
Mako sighed and rolled her eyes. The wound was clean, he had a couple of shattered ribs, but there wasn't much she could do about that aside for applying bone blue and hope she had found all the pieces lost in his chest. Once she had made sure all of his essentials were safe, like heart and arteries and spine, she sealed him back up, re-inflated his collapsed lung and put him on BiPaP. Mako sat down and sighed as she ran her fingers through her hair.
She sighed again.
"Dammnit."
She pulled her hand out of hair and groaned. She went to the sink and washed her hands. She then dunked her head under the water. It was cold and it made her shiver from head to toe, but it also woke her up. She pulled out one of the few remaining towels to dry off her face. She came back out to see that Corridan was nodding off. He sat up when he saw her. She gave him the pencil, he bit down on it.
She set his tibia and he didn't even jump from the pain. She set him a temporary cast and then went to her medicine cabinet. All she had left was codeine. Mako sighed and threw the whole pack at him.
"Two of those, every 4 hours, you go it? Anymore and you get sick and I have to deal with you."
Corridan nodded. "Get some sleep."
She was about to yell at him, but Gault charged in with Dr. Megadol.
"Pleasure to see you again, Mako. I only wish the circumstances were better."
Mako sighed. "Me too."
The doctor nodded his plain face, now set in severe lines. "Right, let's get on it."
Mako followed him into the Med-Bay.
Gault was pacing and Corridan watched since he wasn't really able to sleep. Nathan was right, it was dizzying.
Mako came out and Gault caught her as she lost her footing. He wasn't a sentimental Devaronian, it was clear that his feelings in this situation were mixed, but was worried. They all cared for their boss. Torian sure did.
"She's okay… We just don't know how she's going to be affected from this."
Dr. Megadol came out as proper and clean as he had entered. "I fear I must impose upon you while my patient heals. If I catch anything off, I can fix it best if I remain here to do so." He looked at Gault. "I will give you the bill once I have made sure all are well."
Gault rolled his eyes. "Sure hope you're not charging by the hour."
Dr. Megadol pulled off his gloves off, one hand rolled into the other, and the second pair rolled over the first, as the latex snapped off his fingers he sent it expertly towards the trash bin. Didn't even touch the rim. He looked directly at Gault as he walked away to the mess hall.
Corridan stifled a chuckle at what was an obvious and long standing professional relationship sprinkled with contempt.
Gault heard it however, of course he heard it, the size of those ruddy ears.
"Huk, huk. Yea, laugh it up, chum!"
"Go sleep Mako, you've been up and running for over 24 hours now."
Mako nodded, exhaustion stealing her voice, and went off to what could only be her personal quarters. Gault watched to make sure she wouldn't stumble again, then gave a level look to Corridan. He pointed both index and middle finger at his own eyes and then at Corridan.
"Watching you."
With that he walked away.
Corridan blinked, not sure what to make of the Devaronian's threat. He laid down and tried his best to catch some shut eye too.
Blizz flew the Mantis while the crisis unfolded below deck. He sure hopped the boss was okay. She had taken a nasty hit and had bled a lot. Mako had been pale. It was always bad when she was pale. Gault stumbled up and Blizz asked him in Huttesse how everyone was. Gault let himself fall into the co-pilot's seat, he was pale too.
"We live to die another day."
Blizz remarked on how that didn't sound so good.
Gault frowned and smiled. It wasn't a real smile though.
"We'll be alright little guy. Now how about we fly this rust bucket to where the Mandalorians are docked? I'm sure they want to go home too."
Blizz nodded and began to fly to where the ship had last been docked.
