A/N: Okay, so this update is ALMOST a month late! Almost, but won't be a month until tomorrow, I checked. As always, you all continue to amaze me with your overwhelming love and support for this story and in return I would like to apologize for the lateness of this update. Stuff with school has gotten rather hectic with so many more tests and all the activities I'm involved in so I haven't had as much time to sit down and put your minds at ease from the last chapter, but I'm here now! Enjoy!
Disclaimer: If Twilight was mine, I wouldn't be here. I would be enjoying the fact that I created characters as freaking awesome as the wolf pack. Unfortunately, they all belong to Stephanie Meyer.
Embry POV: 11:58 and Bella's truck hadn't so much as made it across the border. I would've known as soon as it did, because I had hypersensitive hearing and it wouldn't have been hard to miss the roar of her beast of a vehicle coming down the road. I was beginning to get worried.
My mom and Joshua weren't home, something about shopping for new bathroom tiles. Since my mother had decided to let Joshua back into her life, he was now going to become a constant presence in my life; as in he was going to be moving in this weekend. Yes, I was on only slightly better terms with him now but that didn't mean I was going to be completely okay with him shacking up with my mother and I.
That aside, I couldn't even talk to my mom and vent my worry right now; it was killing me. Maybe I should call Sam, see if there was any way the imprint could help me feel her presence, like it had when I was on my death bed.
All of a sudden there was a fierce burning pan shooting throughout my body and I wailed in agony. There was definitely a way to feel whether or not she was in pain. This was worse than any other pain I'd ever felt in my life.
Another wave of fire washed through me and screamed again. Before I even registered what was happening, I heard the door slam open and footsteps running towards me. Honestly, with my level of discomfort I wouldn't have minded a leech flying through the door just to poison me. That pain would have been relatively welcome compared to this. Compared to knowing my girlfriend was hurt, but not knowing why or how to get to her.
To my misfortune though it wasn't a vampire; I recognized the voices and inwardly groaned (or did I do it out loud? It was kind of hard to differentiate the two at the moment). I was screwed if anything, because it was Quil and Jake.
"Em! What's wrong, man? Embry! Open your eyes! What's happening?" Jake's frantic voice broke through the pain-induced haze in my mind. I couldn't do what he said, though. I couldn't open my eyes. I did however speak to him just as he'd wanted. "There's something… wrong… with Bella," I gasped out through gritted teeth. "I don't know what it is, and I don't know where she is, but there is definitely something wrong."
There was a brief silence before I heard a faint, "Call Sam."
Within thirty minutes the intensity of the pain deflated marginally, teetering on the edge of bearable and unbearable. It was killing me; I still didn't know what was wrong with Bella. I'd tried her cell phone numerous times, as did the rest of the pack including my mother, Billy, and Joshua when they'd all gotten to the house. The phone kept going straight to voicemail triggering a strange desire in me to bang my head up against the wall.
Then finally, the house phone rang causing me to bolt into an upright position. My mother ended up reaching the phone before I did, and we all sat in dead silence as we waited for some sort of verdict.
"Hello?" my mother said frantically as soon as she picked up the receiver. She let out a gust of breath. "Hello Charlie! Oh my goodness, we've been so worried about Bella. She never showed up here and her phone's been going right to voicemail. Do you know where she is by any chance?"
There was a low, indistinctive chatter on the other line that we couldn't make out. All that gave us any warning was the tears that started to rapidly cascade down my mom's face. I felt my heart tighten and race, and my limbs go numb. This couldn't be good.
"Oh my goodness," my mother whispered, sounding heartbroken. "That's terrible. It was a hit and run? Well, is she going to be alright? Okay, okay I'll tell him to get down there right now. Thank you for calling us, Charlie."
She slid the phone back into its cradle and just stood there, expression blank except for the quickly falling tears, utterly shell-shocked.
"Mom," I demanded as I ran over to her and squeezed her shoulders, suddenly terrified. "What's wrong? What happened to Bella?"
"She… was in a car accident," her voice was almost robotic. "A very large silver Jeep swerved into her on the highway and drove away; it apparently almost looked to be on purpose. Charlie was called to the scene of the accident; said he nearly had a heart attack when he saw Bella's truck on fire."
I could feel my insides crumble, all reason slipping further away from me. My emotions overtook me. "Is she going to be alright?" I inquired desperately, knowing my tearstained face matched hers.
"I don't know sweetheart," mom said softly, apologetically. "Charlie didn't tell me much about how she was doing, just that she was in critical condition when they brought her in. He did say one thing, though."
"Which was?"
"That you get your ass in the car and get down to that hospital as quickly as possible."
A/N: PLEASE READ! Okay, so what did you guys think of Em's reaction to the whole ordeal? Loved it, hated it? And who do you guys think was behind the wheel of that Jeep? I made a proposition to the rest of my readers and I'll make it to you. In an effort to easily maintain an update schedule, how about expecting updates every weekend to every other weekend, as the weekends are usually when I'm the least busy! Good or nah? Sound off in your reviews and tell me what you think of everything and I'll see you all soon! I love you!
Thanks for Reading!
