A/N: MUST READ: So I have this strange feeling that you all want to kill me for taking so long to update, am I right? Firstly, I need to issue a sincere apology for not updating this sooner. I thought I'd done it around Thanksgiving with the rest but I didn't, so happy belated Thanksgiving everyone! I'm thankful for the love and support you all give me every day and I pray you haven't given up on me; school has just been way too hectic lately. Luckily, I'm on Christmas break for two weeks so I will be here as much as possible! After break though, I will only be updating every other week/weekend! Anyway, I know you're all excited to find out what's happening with Bella, so I'll shut up and let you enjoy!

Embry POV: It took us ten minutes to get to Forks' Community Hospital; though that was a record time coming from La Push it was the longest ten minutes of my life. I was out of the car and sprinting towards the automatic doors before Jake had even put the Rabbit in park.

Bursting through the doors I frantically scanned the waiting room until I caught sight of Charlie, hunched in the back corner of the room with one hand obscuring his face.

He seemed to hear my footsteps running in his direction because he stood up and pulled me into an unexpected hug almost immediately. "Thank god you're here, Embry," he told me gruffly. "There was no way I was going to get through this day without someone who cares about Bella just as much as I do."

Not knowing how else to respond I pulled back and grasped the chief's shoulders. "Charlie," I said seriously, anxiously. "What exactly happened? Have they told you anything about how she's doing?" the fire in my chest was still there, but it wasn't as prominent. I was nearer to her now. I could do my best to protect her from where I was.

Charlie blinked for one long moment and a set of twin tears fell down his face. There was an instant tightening in my heart; you rarely ever saw Charlie Swan cry, not unless something was worse than bad.

"She was almost to the reservation," he got out shakily, and then briefly paused to nod as Jacob and Quil took my flanks with equally worried expressions.

"Her truck was found on the end of the highway. It had been slammed into the shoulder and her engine… it caught on fire a minute or two before the paramedics arrived. Luckily there were some brave bystanders. They managed to bust open the passenger side door and pull Bella out before the car exploded. There was broken glass everywhere and the car spun because she was hit in the front, so the entire car is completely totaled."

I could feel my knees start to buckle underneath me and the tears start to pour from my eyes. It was fortunate the guys were behind me because they each held me under the arms to keep me upright. "Did- did they tell you how bad off her injuries are?" I stuttered, completely unable to keep it together.

Charlie shook his head, looking pained. "Not yet, I'm still waiting for her to get out of surgery for the doctor to speak with me. But when they put her in the ambulance, she didn't look well at all."

"What about the car that hit her?" Jake cut in. "Did anyone get a plate number or see the driver?"

Charlie shook his head again, and this time his agony was mixed with fury. "All bystanders could tell me that it was a silver Jeep Wrangler, that it sped up to hit Bella and the hit looked almost purposeful. The driver did about ninety on the getaway so no one could record the plates fast enough. The windows were also tinted in the front, so nobody saw their face."

At the mention of the Jeep Wrangler, Jacob tensed up and growled under his breath. I made a mental note to ask him about it when Charlie was out of earshot.

The chief sighed and looked at me apologetically. "You know son, I do need to be here, but I also need to find out what deranged lunatic did this to my daughter and why. I'm going to run down to the station, make some calls and see what matches I can find. Do me a favor and call me if there's any change in Bella, will you?"

I nodded. "Of course. But Charlie, what about the doctor?"

"I told him the nurses to notify the doctor that if I was not present at the time he needed me to speak with you. I figured the only other person I can fully trust to look after my girl is you, kid."

"Hey!" Jake protested indignantly.

I on the other hand was touched. I had always expected Charlie to forgo any type of affection for me, seeing as I was destined to be with his daughter forever, and no father would be too keen on their little girl being set with a soul mate at such a young age, but the chief continued to surprise me. "Thank you sir," I nodded my appreciation.

He offered a small smile before taking off out the hospital doors.

As soon as I was certain he was gone I rounded on Jake. "What was that about man?" I demanded.

"What?" he snapped. "I've known Bella my whole life, I think Charlie should know he can trust me to take care of her when he's-"

"Not that, stupid!" I cut him off. "The part where you looked like you wanted to go all psycho-crazy-killer on someone when Charlie mentioned the silver Jeep."

Jacob growled again. "That's because we all know only one person in Forks that owns a car as highly demanded as a Wrangler."

I thought it over for a moment and drew a complete blank. "No man, I don't know anyone around here with one. It was probably some dumbass tourist who thinks they can get away with anything in a small town like this."

"Yeah Jake, nobody around here is rich enough to pay for a brand new Wrangler," Quil added reasonably.

"Oh yes there is!" Jacob shot back, annoyed and angry. "It would be someone who's had hundreds of years to play with the stock market; someone who has hundreds of millions in his life savings."

It seemed to click for both Quil and I at the same time, because we both let out equally feral growls in unison. "Edward Cullen is a dead leech walking."
