The trip to Uraya went by without much issue. They had parted ways with Morag, Zeke, Brighid, and Pandoria in Mor Ardain before heading to Argentum to get passage on a guild ship. Fortunately, Argentum did not have strong ties to the Praetorium making life a bit easier on the group.
Mythra groaned as she reluctantly regained consciousness. She would have loved another hour or two of sleep, but something was not quite right. Finally opening her eyes, she looked up to see what she had been resting her head on. The sleeping salvager barely moved as Mythra's nose twitched. She debated on if this broke her no sleeping together rule. It was a technicality, but she figured she could have some fun with this. Teach Pyra to cuddle with her boyfriend.
"Rex…" Mythra said in a soothing voice meant to emulate Pyra enough to trick his sleep addled mind, "Rex."
"Hmm? Five more minutes, Gramps," Rex readjusted himself.
"Gramps!" Mythra's façade shattered, "In what way do I sound like Azurda!"
"Huh!" Rex fell out of his seat upon the Aegis yelling in his ear, "Ah! Mythra! What was that for?"
"For confusing me with an old man!"
"Who are you calling old?" Azurda piped up from the salvager's helmet.
"Shut it, pipsqueak," Mythra growled before turning her attention back to Rex, "And you, didn't I tell you to keep your hands to yourself?"
"I, um, er, huh?" The poor boy struggled to comprehend what was going on. He just knew that everyone in the cabin was staring at them while Nia struggled to contain her laughter.
"Really, cuddling like that. Do you have no shame?"
"Uh, Mythra, you're the one causing a scene."
"Huh?" Mythra suddenly became aware of the eyes around her realizing her little plot had backfired, "Er, just be careful with the cuddling!" Mythra then went back to her seat and quickly left Pyra to the damage control.
"Sorry about that, everyone," Pyra apologized before shooting Rex and apologetic glance, "Sorry."
"No, no, it's fine," Rex awkwardly took a seat, "Definitely fine!"
Mythra understandably made herself scarce for the remainder of the voyage. That had gotten out of hand rather quickly. She hated when she did that. Pyra never seemed to escalate things like that. Quite the contrary, she tended to deescalate things.
Truth be told, Mythra often had to quell the feelings of jealousy. They were working through their issues, but it seemed that each of them thought more of the other than they did of themselves. One of life's great ironies she supposed.
Their personal issues aside, Mythra was truly happy to see Pyra finally accept herself. Perhaps in part because she bore no small amount of responsibility for Pyra, Mythra wished her nothing but happiness. In her eyes, Pyra was worth protecting, and Mythra had something of a soft spot for her sister, even if she took a bit far sometimes. When this was all over, she was determined to make some true memories with her, somehow.
Despite that, she was starting to worry about becoming a third wheel. It was somewhat inevitable she supposed given their situation, but she did not want to encroach on what they had. Still, she would do her best to work something out.
"How do I look?" Rex asked after fidgeting for the past ten minutes making Pyra giggle at just how adorable she found it. He usually did not care much about appearances, but he was determined to make a good impression on the queen.
"Relax," Pyra responded with her voice filled with equal parts amusement and adoration, "You look fine."
"What about the armor? Do you think I should wear something more formal?"
"Hey," Mythra put her hands on her hips, "You saying we didn't do a good job making it?"
"No! I really like it, but is it right for a formal audience with royalty?"
"Relax. It should give you a bit more believability as the driver of the Aegis."
"Besides," Pyra interjected, "We'll match once we transform!"
"I still don't think I'm used to seeing such a sight," Haze commented as she joined them in the waiting room, "The way you two switch between each other without missing a beat."
"Haze," Mythra greeted if just partially to show off some, "Are they ready?"
"Yes, they are willing to listen."
"Alright," Mythra nodded before shifting into Pythra.
"Rex," They nodded to him.
"Right, let's do this."
What followed was a lot of talking that honestly left Rex feeling both bored and out of place. He was really only called on to talk about what he knew about Amalthus' actions as well as to explain the time travel bit. Oddly enough, Pythra did not seem to have any idea how they had actually pulled that off.
It would have normally been a pretty hard pill to swallow, but considering they had the Aegis and a high-ranking emissary of the Praetorium there, they were given the benefit of the doubt. The Queen of Uraya was hard for him to read, but Rex did his best to look professional even when he was not doing any of the talking.
Needless to say, Rex was extremely grateful when the meeting was over, and he was allowed to leave while the Queen deliberated with her advisors. After staying fused for the audience, Mythra went to go lie down for a bit until they were called back in. This actually left Rex alone with Haze giving him as good an opportunity as any to talk to her.
"Hey, uh, Haze?"
"Hmm?" The blade turned after a moment still getting used to her new/old name, "Yes? Did you need something?"
"There's a good chance that we'll end up fighting Amalthus. If that happens…"
"As his blade, I might revert to my core crystal."
"Yeah," Rex rubbed his neck.
"I know. It's…a sacrifice that I may have to make."
"Maybe not."
"What do you mean?" Haze tilted her head.
"Well, I can use blades that aren't bound to me. It might be possible…to make you my blade instead of Amalthus'. If we do that, then you could stay."
"And…Pyra, is she okay with this? She and Mythra are your only blades, correct?"
This time they were. Rex had never bonded with another in this timeline, "Yeah. I talked it over with them. If…you want, we can try it."
"I-I would like that. Thank you."
"Really? Great! I'll ask more about what exactly we have to do and get back to you."
Haze nodded, "Very well, I look forward to it." Though she wondered how Pyra really felt about it.
A/N: Well, if I do separate the final arc, then this story will probably be wrapping up before too long. As for future stories, I do have some at least basic ideas, there is the one with the abusive Mythra to Pyra. Not exactly a super happy story. Not even sure if it would have a happy ending. There's also the one I sneak peaked. I've also considered a dark Pyra story. Now, the old switcheroo isn't exactly a new concept, so it wouldn't be Amalthus awakened Mythra, no, I have some varying ways one or both of the Aegis girls could be bad. One being that Pyra's creation did not go as planned making her end up, well evil, and she plans to try and usurp Mythra. Could also be where an evil Rex somewhat corrupts her, or maybe Pyra and Mythra are just bad eggs in that take, but that might be the least interesting. Have also thought about doing something with a flesh eater Pyra.
