He made it difficult for her to even find a reason, the man only had eyes for her and her alone. And since he was the most loyal and honorable man she's ever met, now after they had been married, he would not glance at the opposite sex out of respect, even if in passing. She found it quite amusing in fact, checking how he made sure to keep his chin up and above the crowd, an easy task with his considerable height. When women were near, he kept his eyes trained on the horizon, and only responded to them when absolutely necessary.
Eun Soo was pleased and giggled a lot into her fist, having Choi Young dart disconcerting looks her way. "Imja, I told you not to draw attention to yourself. What is with all the giggling and smiling and then trying to hold my hand, like you were a child?"
"But you are like a robot, not a feeling in your face. How do you do that?"
"I can do many things to my face," he responded wearily. "We are not here for fun. Danger seems to follow me wherever I go, so I have to avoid any unnecessary entanglements."
"Like looking at women?"
"Yoo Eun Soo!" He furrowed his brow and acting like a true Goryeo husband, moved ahead, folding his arms behind his back with Eun Soo trudging behind, but his eyes never let her figure out of his periphery.
"Daejang," he heard her whining. "Can you at least buy something pretty for your wife?"
He stopped and turned, strictness in his posture and his face was not pretense and she immediately felt foolish, burdening him with her inconsequential whims. "Sorry. It's just the market is very amusing and I saw a ring that is very pretty. What are we looking for anyway?"
Before he could answer, his strong hand pulled her to his chest and out of the way of a galloping horse. "This is not a place for a woman who does not know this world," he hissed into her ear angrily. "I took you with me because you can't be locked in the house like a prisoner, but we have to remain inconspicuous, remember?"
"Yes," she mumbled, shaking like a leaf from the shock. She had learned to cross the street looking for cars, but she did not bother to check for riders. "I'm sorry. I will do better." She sounded like a scolded child, seeking forgiveness of her parents. Indeed, she was like a child in this world, where everything had to be learned, even the way she had to walk and talk.
"I'm looking for people I knew and I want to gather information about anything that might come in handy later. The market is the best place for reconnaissance," she was glad to hear his kind voice again. When she looked up, his almond eyes were incredibly soft and even remorseful. "I was harsh, I will apologize. But you must understand - there is noone but me here to protect you, so I'm on edge all the time."
"Then leave me at home and do your thing. I will wait patiently. I just need something to do... How about you take me to a pharmacy."
"Where?"
"Medicines? Herbs? I want to see what they got. Maybe, even a book."
"Can you read our language?"
"I have something I brought with me." Eun Soo winked at him, making his stomach fill with worry. This woman was going to cause trouble, he could just feel it coming.
"All right. Come." Choi Young led the way, feeling self conscious of the fact that he could not simply hold his wife's hand or hug her, like he used to do in Seoul. Those frivolities of the future were some of the things he missed the most. Physical contact, closeness, being able to show affection without having judging eyes upon him. At least, they could be themselves at home, behind the closed doors.
. . .
Eun Soo was browsing through books, looking for the ones with drawings. She sneaked her cellphone with her with a specially purchased for this trip solar battery. She was yet to reveal this to Choi Young. She only intended to use it for things like translating Hanja or recording important information. But she expected him to be really mad.
This Choi Young was much tougher to deal with than the version of him she was used to back at home. She watched him tend to his weapon and handle it with certain happiness, as if assured that it was not just an artifact of his past, but truly a part of him. Choi Young now was able to carry his sword freely and proudly. The sides of him she only glimpsed before, the sides of a guardian, warrior, a man of discipline, a man who had to make decisions about life and death – they were now coming to the surface, and the sweet and less restrained stranger that charmed her mother and modeled jeans for her – had no place in this reality. She missed him. She missed that Choi Young. But she understood it was necessary if they were to smoothly blend in and survive, according to him.
He wore leather booties, molded to his feet and light and roomy pants he seemed to love so much. She kind of liked him in his attire. Her husband was hot as it is. But the old style clothing somehow matched him well. It brought out the reserved masculine beauty she admired so much. Black was his color and his long raven hair was up in a ponytail just like when she first saw him at the hospital. His handsome face bore a solemn expression, his brows knitted often and his eyes always thoughtful. Even the angles of his bone structure were more prominent somehow, reinforcing this mature and severe persona he projected. Eun Soo wondered whether it was a requirement for a Woodalchi general to appear stern and aloof, or it was something deep and engrained in Choi Young's personality.
Either way, she was grateful to witness who he was, where he came from, making her appreciate so much more how much he was willing to change for her and accommodate her expectations, when he lived with her in the future.
So she was thinking and meandering around the herbal medicine shop, which was like a treasure for any doctor from the future. She touched and smelled everything in sight and felt like a kid in a candy store. She only took one semester of oriental medicine in school, but she always thought she needed to take extra continuing education classes. And now she could learn first hand. At least this trip would not be time spent in vain. "How much is this one?" She asked the shop owner about a thick volume, covered in dust and hiding behind newer books.
"That is 2 coins."
"2 coins?" She said, prepared to bargain. Only she had no idea whether two coins was a fair price or not.
"I will wait for my husband," she said demurely, trying to behave in the manner Choi Young had instructed her, just as he rushed in panting hard and looking as if he had been running. "Imja, we have to leave now, something urgent came up. I will explain on the way."
"Sorry, I will come back again. Keep it for me," she said, turning to the friendly shop-keep.
"I will lower the price," he offered, but strange couple had already been gone.
. . .
"I saw Mae Hee," He said simply.
Eun Soo stared at him, not getting the meaning.
"I saw my ex-fiancé... the one that died," he added and visibly flinched with an obvious pain at the last words.
"You did?" Eun Soo tried not to show her feelings, although he could probably sense them easily. Anxiety took over her entire body and she felt like crying. She could not explain her reaction, there was no reason for her to worry. Choi Young loved her with all his heart and soul. His body belonged to her. They shared KI multiple times and ultimately, there was no question that she was his true partner, not some girl he used to like when he was a teenager. But being a woman, Eun Soo could not help wondering. What was that girl like? What if his old feelings came back, even for a short time? What if he wavered? What if he regretted loosing her and after seeing her alive would want to change the past so that they stayed together? What if he decides to remain and marry this girl and will just send her back into the future, asking for divorce? What if? What if? So she made superhuman attempt to appear neutral. "You did?"
"Yes. And I also met Jae Su. The thing is... The thing is... I kind of knocked him out," He admitted blushing.
"What?" Instead of telling her about the girl, he now unloaded on her another surprise.
"We have to decide and quickly, how to deal with him. I don't think he should see my face. And I think you should be the one to tell him about the future."
"Hmmm?" This man was insufferable. He did not even give her a chance to wallow in jealousy and insecurity about his first love; she had to forget about the girl and deal with a boy, Jae Su at that.
