George got up from his seat. He paced a little as Murdoch and Sam entered the office. He liked Sam and didn't want her to lose her job. They had become friends fast maybe even faster than he had become friends with Henry but they were just friends! That's all!

"I hope Sam's alright." George said finally.

"They've only just gone in there George. Leave them alone." Henry chuckled.

"I know but I want her to stay."

"So do I but it's up to Detective Murdoch and the inspector."

"You're right. Let's just hope they take pity."

Henry shrugged as a response. George looked one more time into the office and then sat back down at his desk. Henry could still see him looking however, he just rolled his eyes and then went back to work.

Sam sat down behind her father's desk. Murdoch stayed standing behind his chair looking down at the floor. He didn't look happy and Sam wasn't exactly expecting a happy welcome.

"You're late again!" Murdoch started.

"Dad…" Sam tried to say.

"No. That's enough, I'm speaking now." Murdoch nearly shouted.

Sam stared down at the floor. She hated when her father spoke like that. He barely ever spoke like that so knew she was in trouble.

"You have been late on more than seven occasions since you started here. Also you don't listen to a word I or the inspector say." Murdoch said.

"But dad…" Sam tried to speak for herself.

Murdoch just shook his head. Sam could tell that he was going to do something she wasn't going to like.

"Go home Samantha." Murdoch said quietly, finally looking at his daughter.

"But what if you need me?" Sam tried to change his mind.

"It's just for the rest of the day. You'll have time to think about this job and some other stuff." Murdoch said.

Sam calmed a little once he had said that. At least she still had a job for now, she just hoped the inspector felt the same. Sam nodded and left the office again. George and Henry were waiting for her when she came out.

"How was that?" George asked her.

"I'm still on the job but just for the day. I'll decide further apparently." Sam shrugged.

"Thank goodness for that." George sighed.

"Samantha." Murdoch said from his office telling Sam to go home before he changed his mind.

Sam waved goodbye to Henry and George and left the station with her coat up around her ears. Murdoch watched her leave and then walked over to his two constables.

"So she's keeping her job?" George asked with a smile.

"Yes George she is." Murdoch said rolling her eyes at George's feelings for his daughter.

"Murdoch!" Brakenreid called from his office.

"Here we go again." Henry said under his breath.

Sam watched the police officers go from a stand in the square. She would have loved to be with them but knew to listen to her father when he was in this mood.

"Something troubling you?" A familiar voice asked behind her.

"James Pendrick." Sam sighed as she turned around.

There standing in front of her, was an old friend of her fathers. Well when I say friend, I think I mean acquaintance, I don't really know you'd have to ask Murdoch. Whatever he was, Sam and James seemed to be close and got along more closely than her father seemed to do.

"What are you doing in town?" She asked him.

"I came here for some ideas. For my new invention I'm planning." James answered her.

"Sounds interesting." Sam said sarcastically.

"I'm sure your father would be interested." James said, crossing his arms.

"Yeah we're not exactly seeing eye to eye at the moment."

"Why not?"

"Apparently I'm late to everything. I'm having a few days off."

"Aren't you happy about that?"

"No. I would rather be out there and fighting crime."

"I'm sure you wouldn't. Now I must go, I have stuff to do." James said walking away from the conversation.

"You can't just go." Sam chuckled.

"Watch me." James said with open arms as he blended back in with the crowd.

Sam had already lost sight for her genius friend. It was to see someone on her side even if Pendrick didn't work for the police. Sam then heard a crash from somewhere in the street and then shouting continued. Sam being the person she was went to investigate.

As she rounded the corner she saw a carriage fallen over with horses running everywhere. People were trying to help the fallen carriage but to no help. Sam looked over to see how she could help in any way.

"Sam what happened?" James said running up behind her.

"It must have fallen over. Come on we've got to help." Sam said running over to the carriage.

James couldn't really see how they could help but still followed Sam to the crash site. Most of the people had been pulled out of the carriage but there were still two people trapped inside.

"Detective Murdoch." One of the people recognised Sam.

"Give us something to do. We want to help." Sam said pointing at her and Pendrick.

"Of course. Grab that side of the carriage so we can spin it over." The man said pointing to where the two people had to stand.

Sam nodded as James sighed. He hated heavy lifting but if it was to help someone he couldn't exactly say no. He stood next to Sam and other people who had said they would help out too.

"Ready?" The man called them.

The people all nodded.

"On my mark. Three, two one…"

When the man said one the whole carriage was lifted a few inches off of the floor. Two men managed to fit through the door and were helped away from the crash site. The people then put the carriage back down again. They all cheered as they saw the thing they were working for.

"See, if you had gone on that investigation.. You wouldn't have been here." James said to Sam walking away from the crowd.

"I just don't get why the police aren't here." Someone said from a different conversation.

Sam couldn't disagree with James or the person behind them. The police should have been there. She grabbed James' arm and took him back to the police station.

"You're not arresting me are you?" James said a little panicked.

"No. I need to see where the officers are." Sam said, still pulling James' arm.

"Okay but do you have to pull so hard?!" James moaned.

Sam didn't listen and just made her way back. As soon as they got there they ran inside and straight to the reception desk.

"Hodge?" Sam asked walking up to the desk.

"I thought you were supposed to be off today." Hodge said surprised to see the young officer and more surprised to see Pendrick with her.

"I am but I need to see where everyone is." Sam answered hopefully.

"They've gone to a homicide in the east end. I'm sure they'll be back soon." Hodge tried to reassure her.

Sam nodded and paced the floor. Pendrick didn't know what to do with himself as she continued to pace.

"You're making me feel sick." Pendrick said, trying to keep the conversation going.

"Well look somewhere else then!" Sam said impatiently.

Pendrick did as Sam said. He looked out of the window where an ambulance rushed past to the crash site. Hopefully the injuries weren't too bad. Soon voices came to the window, James only guessed that it was the officers returning from the scene.

And he was right. Murdoch, Crabtree, Higgins and Brakenreid followed by other officers came in talking loudly. Murdoch soon saw Sam and stopped before going to his office. Crabtree stayed just a few steps in front to see what was going to happen.

"I thought I told you to go home." Murdoch said to Sam.

"You did but I wanted to see where you were." Sam answered.

"Why?"

"Because there is a crash scene out there and no other officers were there." Sam shrugged.

Murdoch looked out of the window and then back at Sam. he gestured to some of the other officers to go and have a look. Sam wanted to smile but managed to keep it hidden.

"Thank you." Sam said to her father.

"Don't worry about it." Murdoch gave a smile.

"I'd better go." Pendrick said leaving towards the door.

Murdoch nodded and Pendrick waved as he left. Murdoch didn't mind Pendrick but sometimes he just got in the way. Sam looked over at Crabtree and gave a smile.

"Now go home or get told off by the inspector." Murdoch smiled.

Sam went away and left her father to whatever was going on. Murdoch shook his head and then returned to his work.
