Sam looked at herself in the mirror. What was she doing?! She should be out there looking for whoever did this not standing here crying. She wiped away her remaining tears. She then brushed herself off and went out into the bullpen hoping no one would notice the tears still smudging her face.

"Here she comes." George whispered.

"Right. Should I mention it or not?" James asked, looking at her face.

"Probably not." George told him.

James nodded as Sam came closer to them. Sam smiled as she saw her friends waiting for her. She was a little bit worried about what Pendrick was going to say.

"Hey." Higgins said first.

"Hi. You didn't have to wait for me." Sam smiled weakly.

"I don't care what you think. We're your friends, of course we would wait for you." George urged.

Sam was a little taken aback by this comment but coming from George she didn't really mind. She expected as much from James but he wasn't really saying anything so thought nothing of it.

"Where's everyone else?" Sam asked, looking around.

"They haven't got back yet. Either that or the inspector told them all to go home." Higgins shrugged.

"And that goes for you as well." The inspector's voice came from the door of the station.

The four gathered turned to see the inspector looking a bit shaken. There weren't many situations where you would see Brakenreid like this so it surprised the group to see him that way. The inspector tried to put on a straight face as he walked towards the group gathered. Seeing Sam didn't make it any easier either!

"Sam, Higgins, George. Pendrick." Brakenreid sighed.

"Inspector." James sighed back.

Both of the men hated each other but got along for Murdoch and Sam's sake. Brakenreid didn't want Sam to get upset but it wasn't going to be easy with the information he had now.

"How's my father?" Sam asked hopefully.

"Don't worry about that now." George waved away.

"I need to know George!" Sam exclaimed.

George and Higgins stood back. Sam could be very harsh when she wanted to be. Maybe right now she needed to be left alone. Brakenreid nodded at them which meant they should get back to work or go home.

"Come on Henry." George took Henry by the arm.

Higgins wanted to say something but followed George back into the bullpen. They still kept an ear of the conversation but kept away from discussing anything.

"Why did Sam have to be like that?!" Higgins sighed.

"Henry, Detective Murdoch is badly injured. Of course she's going to be upset!" George spoke up for Sam.

"I know but… Oh well. You going home?" Higgins asked.

"Might do. Doesn't look like we're needed here." George looked around at the empty station.

Higgins nodded as the two men got their coats. They said their goodbyes and then left the station. They just hoped they would be back soon to investigate what had happened earlier that day.

"So how is he?" Sam asked again hoping she would get an answer this time.

"Bad. Well that's what the doctor said." Brakenreid tried to keep a lot of details from the young detective.

"Stop dilling around inspector, I can take it." Sam moaned.

"Alright. He was shot twice and broke five ribs as it made impact. Collapsed one of his lungs apparently." Brakenreid finally said.

"Twice?" Sam said.

"What about it?" Brakenreid asked, looking a bit surprised; that was the only thing Sam picked up on.

"We heard three shots." Sam rolled her eyes.

"Oh yes I suppose we did." Brakenreid finally caught up.

Sam rolled her eyes again trying to keep it out of Brakenreid's eyeshot. She didn't want to get told off again and maybe lose her job again! Brakenreid looked at his watch after suddenly exclaiming.

"What's wrong?" Sam chuckled.

"I promised Margaret I'd be early tonight." Brakenreid sighed.

"Why's that then?" James finally spoke.

"None of your business!" Brakenreid shouted.

James made a face and then turned to Sam. Sam had no answer either so they both just stood there for an answer.

"We're going on holiday tomorrow and I'm needed for packing." Brakenreid finally gave in.

Sam and Pendrick raised their eyebrows in unison. Brakenreid barely ever went on holiday and maybe right now wasn't the best time to go.

"Are you sure you still want to go?" Sam asked.

"Margaret's been planning for months. I'd love to stay and see this out but…" Brakenreid tried to tell her.

"It's fine. You can go, we'll solve the case." Sam nodded as Brakenreid left for home.

Brakenreid went home and left the two to the station. Pendrick didn't exactly want to stay but didn't want to leave Sam on her own. He turned to Sam to see what they were going to do next.

"Well?" James asked.

"Well what?" Sam bit her nails.

"Do you want a lift to the hospital?"

"I don't know." Sam shrugged but it was obvious everything that had happened was now getting to her.

Pendrick hugged Sam trying to make her feel better. Sam came out of the hug with a weak smile on her face. It would have to do.

"Alright. We can go." Sam finally decided.

"Alright." Pendrick said back.

Pendrick showed Sam out of the door. As Pendrick didn't have a carriage it meant they had to walk the whole way to the hospital. Sam hated walking but it was a lot better than having to use the bikes instead.

Julia watched on as other doctors worked on William. As she was involved with the patient, the other doctors hadn't allowed her in the operating theatre.

She had seen him come in with blood everywhere. It was a pretty sight whatsoever! She had never seen so much blood and she was a doctor! She paced the floor nearly wearing it out as she waited.

"Doctor Ogden?" A nurse asked, coming from the operating theatre.

"How is he?" Julia asked, keeping back tears.

"He's doing better than we thought he would be." The nurse smiled.

"That's a good sign. How's his injuries?"

"Extensive but he'll heal." The nurse nodded over to Murdoch who was being closed up after the operation.

"When can I see him?" Julia asked with a weak smile.

"Soon. He'll be asleep for a few hours yet but you can sit with him." The nurse put a hand on Julia's shoulder.

"Thank you and thank the doctors for their work." Julia pointed towards the doctors coming out.

"I will do." The nurse left.

Julia took a deep breath in. This was going to be hard and she was all alone to do it.

"Mum." Sam said, rounding the corner.

"Oh Samantha." Julia hugged her daughter tight.

Sam nearly burst into tears again when Julia did this. Pendrick had come with Sam but stayed back as he didn't want to interrupt them. Sam pulled out of the hug when her head turned to see her father lying in the operating theatre being tended to by one of the nurses.

"He's going to be okay dear." Julia tried to reassure her.

"How did the operation go?" Sam asked even though she wouldn't be able to understand most of it.

"Good. They got the bullets out." Julia nodded.

The nurse finished with William and let the two women in to see him. Julia told Sam that he wouldn't be awake for some time yet but Sam still wanted to see him, whatever condition he was in.
