Higgins sighed heavily with relief as they got back into the bullpen. Everyone looked at each other trying to make each other laugh. Higgins didn't usually go down to the morgue so none of them had seen their reaction. It was worth it! Higgins shook himself off as they got back to work.

"So at least we know now who we're looking for." Sam sat down with a heavy sigh.

"Why do you sound so down hearted then?" Pendrick asked her.

"I don't know. It just seems too easy." Sam shrugged.

Crabtree and Higgins nodded. Cases were never this easy, true Detective Murdoch usually solved all of the tough stuff that included science they sometimes didn't understand.

"I think Myers is keeping something from us." Pendrick finally told the group.

"You're not the only one. Myers always keeps something until the last moment even though it is very important!" Crabtree reminded everyone.

Sam turned to the blackboard she had borrowed from her fathers office. Everything and anything was spread across it. Pictures of the men involved, the initial murder and Murdoch's injuries and what had exactly happened at the building yard. Sam tried to keep that mostly out of her vision. She knew how bad the injuries were and didn't need reminding of them.

"Did we miss something?" Higgins asked.

"I don't know Henry." Crabtree said sadly.

"I am not going to the crime scene again!" Pendrick made sure everyone know.

"No we don't need to." Sam smiled.

Before the conversation could say anything else, a crash came from outside. It made everyone jump but Sam was quickly to the window to see what had happened.

"Sam? What's going on?" Pendrick asked.

Sam looked out of the window. Smoke was billowing out of a side corner of the street. She then looked around. There weren't any people around which was weird for this time in the day. She turned back to the group.

"Something must have crashed into something. I'm sure it's nothing." Sam shook her head.

"I'll go." Pendrick suggested.

"You sure? It could be dangerous." Higgins tried to stop him.

"I'll be fine. Anyway, you guys can solve some stuff without me being here. Secret police stuff or something." Pendrick went to the door.

Sam wanted to stop him like Higgins but she couldn't fault his logic. Higgins and Crabtree had been there when Myers had told them about the case. Pendrick hadn't. She nodded in agreement at Pendrick. Pendrick then disappeared out of the door.

"You can't let him go alone." Crabtree said.

"Why? The people aren't after us. He'll be fine." Sam smirked at Crabtree being so worried.

Crabtree looked to Higgins for support. Higgins agreed with Sam however, there wasn't any evidence that the gang were after them personally. They were mostly going to be fine.

Pendrick wandered into the street. Like Sam he was a little surprised that there weren't any people around. The corner was still having smoke coming out of it. He carefully stepped towards the corner. He was being cautious as he didn't exactly know what was going on.

"Hello anyone there?" Pendrick called out.

No answer came. Pendrick didn't really know what to make of this. The smoke wasn't stopping and if he did enter he wouldn't have any vision whatsoever. If there was anyone down there, then he wouldn't know until he actually bumped into them.

Pendrick turned back to the station one more time. He didn't want to be labelled as a coward especially by Higgins. He took a deep breath in and puffed out his chest. He then took a few steps forward and entered the smoke.

It had been a few minutes since Pendrick had left the station house. Sam was starting to get a little worried as he normally was in and out of places very quickly.

"Shouldn't Pendrick be back by now?" Sam finally mentioned to Higgins and Crabtree.

"Yeah you're right. Maybe we should go and look for him." Higgins made fun of Sam.

"Henry. Come on." Sam sulked.

Higgins shook his head. Sam turned to Crabtree to get him to come with her. He stood steadfast however, and agreed with Higgins.

"Fine. I'll go alone then." Sam stood up with confidence.

"Wait. Alone?" Crabtree suddenly sounded worried.

"Yeah. You two don't want to come so…" Sam made fun of them.

"Fine we'll come but I'll blame you if something goes wrong." Higgins gave in.

Higgins and Crabtree grabbed their coats and followed Sam out of the door. They let Sam lead as she was a little bit more confident than them. Not to say they were scared. Well they wouldn't say that out loud!

000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

The street was still somewhat covered in smoke from the crash they had heard earlier. They could still see however which was good. Sam looked down the corner where Pendrick had disappeared. The corner had now become less smokey so she could see a few feet now.

"Anything?" Higgins asked.

"Not yet. George, do you have a torch?" Sam called back to them.

"Yeah here." George passed Sam the torch.

Sam shined the torch in front of her to see a little better. The smoke cleared under the light. The floor was covered in either ashes or what seemed to be dust but Sam wasn't sure.

"This corner doesn't last forever. Where did he go?" Sam asked herself.

"Pendrick? Pendrick you there?" Higgins called loudly.

"Henry!" Sam hissed.

Higgins went quiet. He didn't want Sam to get mad at him especially if she found something and blamed it on him. Sam continued down the corner watching where she was stepping. She didn't want to make any noise but she also didn't want to step on anything that could be important.

"Sam?" George said from behind her.

"Either Pendrick can disappear into thin air…" Sam said.

"I wouldn't be surprised with James Pendrick." George mumbled.

"Or someone else was down here." Sam continued.

She then shone the torch down again. There was something red lining the ground. Sam bent down to see what exactly it was.

"Is that blood?" George asked, wavering his voice.

"Looks so. It's just a pile though."

"And?"

"Well if someone pulled Pendrick that way, we would have seen a trail." Sam pointed behind them.

"You think it's Pendrick's?" George kept asking questions.

"Who else would it be? Pendrick didn't have any weapons or anything." Sam shrugged.

George nodded. He then went back to retrace their steps. If Sam was right then the blood must have gone somewhere. Then he found little blobs of blood coming out of the corner they had gone down.

"Sam." Crabtree called back.

Sam turned back and headed towards Crabtree. She saw the blood on the ground where Crabtree was looking. Higgins was keeping back a gag as he also saw it. Sam looked up to see if there was anymore.

"So we just follow it then?" Crabtree asked, saying what they were all thinking.

"Looks like it." Sam gulped.

Then the phone rang out of the station. Higgins went to answer it before he was sick in front of the other two.

"It's the hospital for you Sam." Higgins called.

Sam raised an eyebrow but then went to answer the phone. She took it off of Higgins. Higgins stayed nearby just in case anything important was said. Crabtree leaned on the door frame making sure nothing else bad happened.

"Sam Murdoch." Sam answered the phone.

"Sam, where have you been?!" Her mothers voice nearly shouted down the phone.

Sam had to lean back a little so she wasn't deafened by her mother. Crabtree smiled as he saw her reaction. Sam would get them back for this later.

"Mum, I'm fine if you were wondering." Sam rolled her eyes.

"I know you are. You said you were coming home last night."

"Well I found something and had to check it out."

Sam knew this wouldn't mean a lot to her mum but still said it.

"Alright. Just checking that everything's okay." Her mother sounded worried for once.

"Yep all fine." Sam lied.

"Good. Oh and you'll have to come and see your father later. He needs to know about the case apparently." Her mother sighed.

"I will do. Bye mum." Sam put the phone down.

Sam crossed her arms at Higgins. Higgins wanted to sink into the ground when she did this.

"Why didn't you tell me it was my mum?" Sam asked.

"Surprise!" Higgins chuckled nervously.

Sam rolled her eyes again and went about checking the blackboard putting a picture of Pendrick up on it. She just hoped it would soon be taken down as he wasn't a concern anymore. He would be back soon though. Wouldn't he?
