Bobby wasn't liking the look on Jade's face after she had told him that she knew what took Cameron's mom.
"So what creature are we hunting?" Bobby asked
"Griffin," Jade answered, "it's called a griffin."
"So you're saying the fat guy from that one show my dad won't let me watch took her?"
"It's a creature that is half lion and half eagle," Jade explained completely ignoring Bobby's question, "however, they don't reside on this side of the world."
"What you mean?"
Jade was about to answer when she spotted a patrol car turning the corner. Without hesitation she ordered Bobby to quickly get into the house. Luckily the door was unlocked so they easily crawled in between police tape. They kept low to the ground and remained quiet for a few minutes until they knew for sure the cop had drove on pass them.
"Okay," Bobby said as they got up, "why is it impossible for a griffin to be in Texas?"
"They can only be found in Europe or Asia," Jade informed, "even though griffins have wings; flying across the ocean is an impossible task for them."
"The questions now are, how did someone sneak a flying kitty into Texas and why have it attack Dr. Garfield?"
Bobby began looking around the living room trying to find any clues why the griffin would attack amongst the destroyed room. Then he noticed his father's jacket laying on the floor. He walked over to pick it up, when he did something fell out. He look down and saw a gold ring.
"That's weird, my dad doesn't own a gold ring."
Hearing Bobby say that caused Jade to quickly walk over and snatched the ring from his hand. She examined it in hopes it would add new information to the mystery.
"It's real gold and real old, at least a few centuries and worth a lot of cash." Jade stated
"A monster hunter, a gold expert, and a appraiser," an impressed Bobby said, "is there anything you can't do?"
"Sing, cook, and get a grade above D in chemistry," Jade stated with a bit of humor, "but seriously this ring explains why the griffin attacked, it was after this ring."
"Why?"
"Griffin tend to collect gold, jewelry, and other items it finds interesting then guards it with its life."
"Like Smaug in The Hobbit." Bobby pointed out
Jade rolled her eyes.
"Well unlike dragons; griffins aren't extinct," Jade said, "also griffins were sometimes used to protect a kingdoms most valuable items."
"Okay, the griffin attacked because this ring was in the pocket of my dad's jacket," Bobby said as he tried to piece everything together, "that would mean if my dad took his jacket then he would be the one missing."
"Then your dad was the target," Jade realized, "but who would target him; with a mythological creature no less."
"Thatherton is the person my dad would suspect but I doubt he has enough money to rent yet buy a griffin."
"No offense to your dad but someone in their line of work wouldn't make enough to afford to even see one."
"Then we need to figure out who, but not here." Bobby suggested
As the duo headed back towards Rainy street; we go to the home of mayoral candidate Vergil Min. He was sitting in a comfortable armchair in his living room talking to an unknown person in an adjacent chair with the chair's large backrest covering them from behind.
"The others are growing concerned with your lack of progress, Vergil." a male voice informed in a harsh tone
"I apologize if my campaign, which you and the others are funding by the way, is being an inconvenience but when I presented my plan I stated that it would take awhile, Vergil said defensively, "The experiment itself is showing promise thanks to the pathetic vampire hybrid we captured weeks ago."
"One Dhampir will not suffice, you need more specimens to accomplish your goal."
"I understand but the blood sample from that criminal I personally killed gave me nothing."
"What of the town's Custos Lupus or as the local media calls him, the Arlen Werewolf?"
"As I've informed you this particular werewolf is unique," Vergil explained, "when I encountered him recently I stared into his eyes and saw not only fear as I went to kill him but also innocence, this leaves me to believe that the Arlen Werewolf is just a pup."
"Well that pup has caused us to lose a gargoyle along with one of our own." The stranger pointed out
"Luckily we used Ted's money to buy the gargoyle," Vergil quipped, "Tom on the other hand was pretty hotheaded even for a Basilisk."
"While that may be true, his spot among us will be difficult to fill, however you're replacement on the other hand will be simpler."
Vergil wasn't too pleased by that statement.
"I earned that spot." Vergil shouted as he stood up
His guest was not intimidated by the outburst.
"You're only with us because I vouched for you," the man said, "traditionaly one has to earn that right, so far I'm starting to regret the decision to allow someone of your species join us."
Vergil calmly sat back down as the stranger continued.
"So if you truly want to earn your right to be in our group you have to shift your focus from this pointless campaign to the experiment."
"This election is crucial to the experiment," Vergil stated, "the werewolf is the only one who can stop me, so if I can get the town to hunt him down then the experiment will run without any trouble."
The stranger chuckled.
"I find it amusing that you're planning to have the wolf hunted down since you're exactly like him." The stranger pointed out
"I'm nothing like him," Vergil protested, "I have no problems with him dying."
"Very well, but if you lose the election I won't protect you from the others."
"Understood." Vergil agreed
As the stranger stands up to leave we get a glimpse of the back of his neck. Sticking out from under his shirt is a tattoo of a pig in a style similar to the basilisk's snake tattoo.
(The Hill Residence 7:40 p.m.)
With zero luck of figuring out who could afford a griffin they instead concentrated on where the monster could be hiding.
"Griffins normally like high mountains and caves," Jade stated as she spread out a map of Arlen, "any ideas where it could hid?"
Bobby examined the map; knowing Arlen well he immediately pointed to a forest area.
"The Tea Kettle," Bobby said, "it's a natural rock formation with a cave nearby."
"Not a mountain but let's go."
As they hoped into Bobby's car to go save Allison their conversation was overheard by Dale Gribble in his basement via his DaleTech equipment. However he had only seen the part where Bobby announced where Allison was being held and Jade running after him.
"If anyone is going to save my best friend's woman from the Arlen werewolf it's going to be me." Dale declared as he picked up a shot gun
Dale armed himself with a variety of weapon to help him fight and even kill Bobby. He walked upstairs where he received stares from his wife Nancy, his son Joseph, and Cameron Garfield who were in the living room watching TV.
"Dale, honey, what are you doing?" Nancy asked hoping his answer was different from what she expected
"I've discovered the location of Cameron's mom so I'm on a rescue mission to save her." Dale informed
Cameron smiled as she got up and hugged Dale.
"Thank you, Mr. Gribble." Cameron said
"You can think me when I bring your mom back along with the corpse of the Arlen Werewolf."
Cameron let go of Dale when he mentioned Bobby.
"Cool," Joseph shouted, "can I go with you, because if I kill the werewolf then all the chick will like dig me."
"Sorry, son, but I need you here to project the ladies while I head to caves near the Tea Kettle."
"Sug, you're crazy there is no Arlen Werewolf." Nancy stated as Dale walked to the door
"I'll have to prove it," Dale said before closing the door but then opened back up, "if I don't make it back just remember I love you but I do return make sure my show records."
Before Nancy could say anything Dale was out the door.
"I'm calling the cops." Nancy announced as she went to the kitchen
Cameron managed to get away from Joseph, who had been hitting on her all afternoon as she slipped into the bathroom where she took out a card along with her cellphone. She dialed a number and waited for the phone to ring.
"Hello," Cameron said as the person answered, "Mr. Stokes, it's Cameron Garfield, I need your help."
I know this chapter was short up this is just a build up for part four. So not only was the creature that took Allison identified but also got a small glimpse of Vergil's reason for running for mayor and saw an ally of his. Plus it seems Bobby and Jade are working well together but will it be enough to defeat the griffin? Will they beat Dale there? Stay tuned.
