This takes place directly after Cloud finds Denzel outside Aerith's church. However, once Cloud discovers the orphan has Geostigma, he's reluctant to let him stay at 7th Heaven since he knows what Denzel's fate will eventually be. Cloud keeps his distance from the quiet boy and implores Tifa to not get attached to him. (Doesn't follow "On The Way to A Smile")

Cloud did join Shinra, but he just did his tour and got out. Once discharged, he moved under the plate, earning gil by doing odd jobs and monster hunting in the wastes around Midgar. On this particular day, it wasn't a monster he found, but a shot-to-hell SOLDIER who wasn't quite dead. A story of building a new life, gaining new friends, and a past that isn't quite done.
