"Where the hell did you come from? And how did you get in my house?" Theo Magath begun interrogating Erwin while pointing a gun at his face.
Erwin Smith did not reply towards the General, but stared at him.
Flashback
Ten minutes after the hearing was finished, a large crowd of people had left the Marleyan Supreme Court and walked into the courtyard. The were large groups of chatting between many Marleyans. Some of the groups dispersed and walked home, while other groups remained in the courtyard.
A small group of people stayed in the courtyard, which happened to be the soldiers from Paradis. They walked around the courtyard a bit before settling down and heard groups of Marleyans talking about the hearing and talking negatively about the people who live on Paradis. Mikasa Ackerman sat on a bench down right next to a stoic Eren Yeager, Floch Forster's eyes shifted from left to right as he heard Marleyans talk to one another. Connie Springer stood next to Jean Kierstein, who was carrying a half-sleep Sasha Blouse on his upper back.
Erwin Smith looked around until he had spotted Theo Magath talking to other Marleyan Generals standing many yards across the courtyard. He kept a mild look and his bold blue eyes.
"Hey, Erwin. What is our next move?" Levi asked while approaching him from behind.
Erwin continued staring towards Theo from across the courtyard. He then saw Theo Magath and other Marleyan Generals walk elsewhere from the courtyard.
"You hear me talking to you, Erwin. Don't you?" Levi asked as he placed a single hand onto Erwin's right shoulder.
Erwin waited five seconds to to speak. "Make sure that Eren does not leave the group." He did not look back to Levi when he told Levi.
'What?" Levi took his hand off of Erwin's arm.
Erwin begun walking forward and towards the crowd. "I'll be gone for a while."
End Flashback
"I wanted to have a private discussion with just the two of us, Theo Magath." Erwin said.
"How did you get in my house?" Theo Magath asked.
"I followed you home, yesterday. My name is Erwin Smith. And I'm the Commander of the Survey Corp." Erwin had told Theo Magath.
"W-what? There is no Survey Corp. in Marley! What are you talking about?" Theo Magath had asked in a confused manner as he still pointed his gun towards Erwin's forehead. A moment of silence had occurred between the two men within Magath's home. He stared deep into Erwin's eyes and noted that there was no fear within him at all.
Erwin remained silent for a moment.
"Wait a second... Erwin Smith? The name starting to sound familiar." Theo Magath paused while holding a gun. Suddenly, he gasped as an imaginary lightbulb appeared over his forehead.
Flashback
A few years prior days after retreating Shiganshina, Reiner Braun decided to report everything he knew about Paradis Island to Theo Magath in his office. Marleyan Soldiers had arrested Ymir and transported her to a facility where Titan-Shifters would be taken and be devoured.
"So, after breaching the walls and letting the titans in, you, Bertoldt and Annie infiltrate their military while on that island?" Theo asked while lighting a cigarette.
Reiner sat on a chair in front of Theo Magath's desk. "Yes. There's a military branch that supposedly represent freedom. They call themselves the Survey Corp. and they've been trying to escape the walls for over a hundred years." Reiner told Theo Magath.
Theo Magath exhaled smoke from his mouth from a burning cigarette. "Interesting... those devils lied cosey within their walls for about a hundred years. Why would they ever want to leave?"
"And that's not all, I'm afraid..." Reiner glanced downwards at his knees.
"Oh?"
"The Survey Corp. has a fierce Commander. His name is Erwin Smith. He has the heart of a true Devil. You can easily tell, just by looking into his eyes." Reiner told Theo Magath.
End Flashback
After reliving that flashback, Theo Magath then knew who he was pointing his gun at. His eyes suddenly grew and he gasped towards Erwin. "You're... him. The true devil of Paradis!"
"I take it that you know me?" Erwin casually asked.
"I was informed about your kind a while back. You have the heart of a true devil-which makes you all the more dangerous." Theo Magath stated.
"I see..." Erwin blinked once,
"So, tell me, Erwin Smith. Have you devils finally come to take revenge on Marley? Have you come to avenge your Titan brethren?" Theo Magath asked, expecting Erwin to say yes.
"No. Claiming vengeance only draws more bloodshed and conflict between enemy nations." Erwin shook his head no.
"Eh?"
"I simply came here because I wanted to hold a discussion between us Commanders."
"Discussion? And what if I refused talk with your kind?" Theo Magath looked around his house a bit for the telephone. "I could easily go to the telephone contact the police." Theo Magath pointed at his telephone sitting on a small table next to a chair. He tried to walk over towards the telephone, but was stopped by Erwin's words.
"You can try, but I'm afraid you won't be able to contact anyone for the time being." Erwin said.
"Eh? Why not?"
"Because I cut the lines." Erwin said, plainly.
"You what?" Theo Magath looked towards and picked up his telephone and gasped when he saw that the telephone line had been cut.
"I couldn't risk having any Marleyan soldiers breaking in and interrupting our personal discussion, so I cut all the lines within your home." Erwin had informed Theo Magath.
Theo Magath paused. 'You goddamn devil.' He glanced back with a bit of hate towards Erwin. "So, you broke into my house and cut all the lines, just to hold a discussion with me?"
"That's correct."
"Tell me, Erwin. What's stopping me from putting a bullet in your forehead?" Theo Magath grumbled and focused his aim towards Erwin's forehead.
"Because I currently possess what Marley once had. The Colossus Titan." Erwin told Theo Magath, plainly.
"Wait, what?"
Erwin Smith raised his bleeding left hand so Theo Magath could see it. The center of Erwin's left palm had been cut with a sharp object.
Theo Magath's eyes grew big in shock after hearing the words, "Colossus Titan". His body had frozen in place, as he saw sparks of yellow electricity and that Erwin's body begun to glow. "W-wait! Are you seriously about to transform into a Titan?"
"It depends on the choices you make, next." Erwin replied.
"Just what do you want?" Theo Magath took a step back in shock.
"As I told you, I would like to have a personal conversation. But first, I would like to ask you to drop your gun."
Theo Magath grunted as he stared at a glowing Erwin Smith.
In the past, Theo Magath had spent many years watching Eldians transform into mindless Titans and also watched Titan-Shifters transform and use their Titans during battle. But never once has he thought that an enemy Titan-Shifter transform within his own home. In his mind, he was placed under two options. He would either comply with Erwin and do what he says, or he would risk Erwin transforming and potentially destroying Marley. Theo Magath gulped, then sighed. "Alright." He slowly bent down with the gun and slid it behind himself so it could be out of reach.
Erwin had stopped, before he could transform into his Colossus Titan in the next two seconds. He lightly smiled towards Theo Magath. "Now. Take a seat." Erwin pointed at two fancy chairs that were next to a closed window.
Theo Magath stared at the pair of chairs, then looked at Erwin. He slowly walked and took a seat in one of them.
Erwin had sat in a chair in front of Theo Magath.
"Thank you for complying. Now that we have introductions out of the way, I believe it's time that we discuss the current situation of the world." Erwin
"Before we start that, tell me something... Did you really kill all of the Titans on that island?" Theo Magath asked.
"Hm?"
"I mean, there was no way you could've left the island without getting passed them. After chasing away the Warrior Unit, you devils had probably used the Founding Titan's power to keep the Titans at bay, then slaughtered them afterwards." Theo Magath assumed.
"I see where you are going with this, but no. We didn't use the Founder. We killed all the Titans on Paradis with blood, sweat, tears and our Maneuvering Gear." Erwin told Theo Magath.
Theo Magath's eyes flashed. "Wait... you're telling me that you devils purged all the Titans in from Paradis in the expansion of three years?" he had questioned.
"That's correct." Erwin answered. Then he thought of the times he had lead charges against the Titans since the year, Eight Forty-Five.
Theo Magath sighed. "I guess I underestimated you devils... Wait, but if you did kill all the Titans, that doesn't explain how you got here on Marley."
"I'm afraid I can't reveal that person's identity... but what I do know is that we had outside help and those people share the same goals as us." Erwin stated as he thought about Yelena and the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers. "For decades, we Eldians or "Devils" what the world described us to be have always we-the Survey Corp. had always wanted to seek freedom beyond the walls."
"But, you had to know, right? Your ancestors slaughtered countless people across the world, then moved to that island a century ago. So, how could you devils not know what was beyond the walls?"
"Because King Karl Fritz erased our ancestor's memories." Erwin explained.
Theo Magath gasped.
"The First King was ashamed of what occurred during the Great Titan War, so he had taken morals and moved whoever he could to Paradis Island. He also created a vow of renouncing war. He placed that burden upon his descendants, in case they ever release the Titans or wondered outside the Walls. Meaning, the royal family lived in peace and never intended to harm anyone outside the walls." Erwin explained the morals and the history of Karl Fritz to Theo Magath.
"So, the great threat of having millions of Titans crush the world was just a lie..." Theo Magath assumed.
"I wouldn't call it a lie, though... I'd call it a last resort. You're right. For past hundred years, we Eldians have lived peacefully within the walls for a hundred years. That was until eight years ago..." Erwin Smith thought about the day the Warrior Unit had breached Wall Maria. "That was until... the day the Colossus Titan breached the walls."
Theo Magath suddenly thought about Bertoldt Hoover as Erwin Smith mentioned the word Colossus Titan. "Speaking of Colossus Titan... How in the world did someone like you manage to possess one of the Nine Titans, Erwin?"
Erwin blinked before opening his mouth. "Three years ago, when I and the Survey Corps attempted to retake Shiganshina from the Titans..." Erwin Smith's mind had went through a series of flashbacks during the time the Survey Corps had retaken Shiganshina. "We had encountered the Warrior Unit while in Shiganshina, such as Bertoldt Hoover, Reiner Braun, Zeke Yeager... and according to our intelligence, there was another Warrior, there, a woman that is called Pieck. The casualties on our side were extremely heavy and we had lost many of our good soldiers. Trying to reclaim our land from the Titans." Erwin thought back when Bertoldt had transformed and killed most of Hange's squad. "I once led a suicide charge towards one of your allies, Zeke Yeager-so that one of my allies, Captain Levi could kill him."
"Wait, you mean that Ackerman, Levi?" Theo Magath questioned.
"I take it, that you were informed of Humanity's strongest soldier, then?" Erwin asked.
"You're damn right I was. He's the one who nearly killed our strongest Warrior-without passing on his Titan power! If Zeke died, that power probably would've gone to an Eldian baby within Paradis." Theo Magath told Erwin Smith.
"That's correct." Erwin nodded. "In truth, I made Captain Levi promise to kill him. Levi was close to killing him-but I'm afraid Zeke had reinforcements come to rescue him." Erwin didn't witness Levi attacking Zeke, due to passing out from blood loss. But knowing how Levi's nature and how he fights, he could imagine Levi torturing and interrogating Zeke after cutting him out of his Beast Titan. Erwin then thought about once glancing at Pieck in her Titan form. He assumed that she rescued Zeke. Otherwise, Levi would've either killed or had him eaten.
"And you watched it happen? You watched Zeke get defeated, then rescued?" Theo Magath asked.
"No. I had passed out, due to the large amount of blood loss." Erwin said as he placed a left hand on his left stomach, where he was once pierced by debris.
"Then, how did you become the Colossus Titan, if you were unconscious?" Theo Magath lowered his gun a bit.
Erwin thought about Floch Forster. "My body was dragged back within Shiganshina by a fellow soldier. During that time, Bertoldt Hoover had been incapacitated by one of our own and the other Warriors had escaped the walls. We had a single injection that could transform a single Eldian into a Titan. The soldier who brought me back to the walls believed that I should get the Titan injection. But, there were a few who disagreed. Shortly, the final decision was made and I was chosen by the injection... and I devoured Bertoldt Hoover."
Theo Magath suddenly wondered in his mind and thought back when he examined Bertoldt Hoover and acknowledged his marksmanship in the Warrior Program. 'So, Bertoldt Hoover really is dead.' Theo Magath disappointingly sighed. "It couldn't be helped, then."
"I can't apologize for taking Bertoldt Hoover's life. Nor can I apologize for all the lives that our ancestors had taken, centuries ago. In life, the only thing we Eldians can only do is pray and that people would forgive us and move forward." Erwin said.
"Pray for forgiveness and move forward, huh?" Theo Magath leaned his back a few inches forward.
Erwin Smith nodded.
"I hate to break it to you, Smith, but that's not how the world works. The world is completely filled with hatred for your kind and are developing Anti-Titan technology that will obliterate the likes of you."
"Yes. I understand that."
"Just exactly how are you going to move forward when the whole world wants you devils dead?"
"By making peace with other nations." Erwin said.
Theo Magath chuckled in disbelief. "You're joking, right?"
"I'm afraid not."
"You really think you devils can just erase everyone's hatred just by talking and reasoning with people, alone?" Theo Magath asked in disbelief. "Most people that I know of will shoot your kind on sight, if they knew you were a devil."
"I get that. But in order for Paradis to continue to exist, we need allies outside the walls that can help secure our safety. For instance... there's a noble named Willy Tybur."
"You know Willy Tybur?" Theo Magath asked in a surprised manner.
"No. I've only heard of him through reputation. He's an Eldian noble who lives in Marley. He's able to persuade millions of people across nations with his voice, alone. I also heard that his family possess the Warhammer Titan."
"Really..."
"Indeed. I plan to meet him, soon. But for now, I'm trusting you with this information. Don't tell anyone, just yet." Erwin placed an index finger over his mouth.
"W-what?" Theo Magath's left eye twitched.
Suddenly, a big brown round clock in the room and attached to a wall had rung itself. Catching both of their attention. The time was now Eleven in the evening.
"It seems to be a bit late." Erwin stared at the clock Well, then... I'll be leaving now. Thanks for agreeing to our conversation, Theo Magath." Erwin Smith suddenly got up from a chair and proceeded to walk towards the front door.
Theo Magath just paused as he watched Erwin open his front door. He grunted and jumped out of his chair and walked fast to catch up with Erwin. "Wait!" he yelled as he caught up with Erwin by the front door.
Erwin stopped before he could reach the doorknob and looked back to Theo Magath.
"Just one question, Erwin. Why did you tell me your true intentions? I could easily report this and you to the authorities and have you forcibly pass down your Titan to our future warriors. But instead, you chose to trust me, an Eldian-hating Marleyan with your intentions. Your people's enemy!"
"Because you and someone I know are exactly the same." Erwin simply replied towards Theo Magath.
Theo Magath asked. "You're telling me that there's a devil who acts just like me on Paradis?" he yelled.
"Indeed." Erwin replied. He suddenly visualized Keith Shadis standing next to Theo Magath.
Theo Magath annoyingly sighed. "If you're gonna break into my house, next time, don't cut the telephone lines, will ya? They ain't cheap, either."
"Hm?" Erwin Smith turned his full body towards Theo Magath. "So, you're saying..."
"Fine, I'll play along with your little goal of world peace." Theo Magath palmed his forehead with his right hand.
Erwin smiled. "Thank you, Theo Magath."
"Yeah, now get out of my house here before other Marleyans starts questioning."
"Will do." Erwin Smith exits through Theo Magath's front door and left his property.
Theo Magath stared at the front door for five minutes before sighing, annoyingly. "I'm making a huge mistake. Me working with another devil... I'm already working with Zeke, though." he mumbled and walked towards his bedroom.
Author's Note: Thank you guys for not giving up hope. It took me a while to do this chapter. Just thinking about it over and over again... but I pulled through.
