Dear Finn,
I'm going to start my letter with news about Kurt. He got the job at Vogue and seems to really be clicking well with his boss Isabella Wright. He does a lot of assistant type work for her: getting her coffee, mail, phone calls, correspondence, errands around town. Kurt says that she even asks his opinions on certain layouts for the website. At the rate Kurt's going, he thinks he could get a promotion by Christmas. He's doing so well with work that he's putting off NYADA indefinitely. It came as a shock to me at first, but fashion has always been Kurt's true passion, so I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised.
I think the Dean Carmen Tibideaux really likes my talent, but it's hard to tell with her. Like Cassandra July, and most of my other professors, she doesn't seem to lay on the praise like Mr. Schue always did. Nowadays for motivation I watch our big win at Nationals. I've sung exactly one time for Carmen – at my first Master Class, where all of the freshman sang. I suppose I should be happy I'm still in the program - Carmen actually cut a freshman off mid song, only to expel her from the program after finding her performance lacking. The one other time I may get to sing for Carmen this year will be at the Winter Invitational: an invite-only concert where students that she deems worthy show off their talents for the entire faculty. She hands out gold invitations to participants – only ten go out. Imagine performing for everyone, the exposure, the opportunity. She sends out the invites after Thanksgiving, which gives me another month of wondering and waiting.
I don't perform much in Dance 101 – Ms. July would rather relegate me to the sidelines than see me perform. The one bright spot in the class is Ms. July's Teaching Assistant – Brody Weston. Brody's an upper classman who seems to have taken pity on poor me – the odd girl out. I swear, if I make it on Broadway, it will be in spite of my dancing. I never thought I was terrible at dancing – I took all of those dance classes starting in preschool. I'll admit it was never my strongest suit, but the way Ms. July treats me – I may as well be a proper klutz. Maybe it's the way she's always putting me on the spot, always trying to put me down in one way or another. Brody offered to give me private lessons after hours, I think I'll take them – I'll take anything I can get these days.
All of my other classes are going well. One of my favorites is Musical Theatre Techniques on Film – all of the rich history behind the songs and stories that are told. If there was a historian who would write about all of my achievements, I know I could die happy. My other favorite class is Voice Foundations – perfecting my favorite craft, the only that I know that I truly excel at. My professor Ms. Lerner went out of his way to tell me how well I'm doing – the closest thing I've gotten to a compliment so far. Ms. Lerner even thinks that I could find part time work giving voice lessons to local kids in Manhattan – a great way to make some extra money and build strong references for my resume.
Speaking of schooling, have you given any thought to what you want to do when you get out of the Army? Maybe you could take a career aptitude test to see where your strengths are. This way you can make the most of your service.
I can't believe we'll be seeing each other in one month. Kurt and I will be leaving the Tuesday before Thanksgiving – after my classes get out. From what Tina's told me, most of the Glee kids will be coming home for at least part of Thanksgiving, so maybe we can all have a big reunion together.
Love forever,
Rachel
