CHAPTER 8: Date Night

Part 1: Eddie and Jake

Eddie's POV

I hummed to myself as I exited the house.

I have been happy, since Jake and I agreed to date in secret. Especially since that night in the woods.

I quickly went to the store, bought a few drinks, and left. I only made it halfway home when someone covered my eyes.

"Guess who?" Jake's voice asked.

I smirked and decided to mess with him.

"Josh?"

"Uh, no."

"Hmm... Wally?"

"Not even close."

"Oh... Peter? Oh, wait... maybe...Scott?"

"No!"

I snickered. "Just messing with you, Jake."

He rolled his eyes at me, then walked next to me. "What are your plans for tonight?" he asked.

"Nothing, why?"

Jake glanced at me. "We should go on a date."

I looked at him. "You and me? On a date?"

"No. Wally and Peter, to a field trip." he said sarcastically. "YES, you and me on a date."

"Well, sure. I just have to take this to Mary and Beth first. And obviously change." I replied. (I was wearing ripped jeans with a random shirt on and a blue jacket.)

"Alright. Dress casuall." he said.

"I always do." I replied with a grin. I ran up the driveway and into my home.

Oh...my...freaking...gosh...

I've never been on a date before!

I shook my head and got dressed.
I wore a blue shirt, light blue skinny jeans, black boots, and a black leather jacket. I had my hair loose and with a blue baseball cap. I mdae sure to tell Beth I was going out (she was the only one who knew about me and Jake.) then I left.

He was waiting for me at the end of the street, where no one would see us meet. He also had changed clothes.

Now, Jake wore a black shirt, blue jacket, regualr blue jeans and his black converse. He also wore a black basball cap. He grinned when he saw me.

"Why, Eddie, you look dashing!" he said with a fake dramatic voice.

I laughed. "Why, thank you Jake."

We walked close t each other into town. THankfully, no one we knew was in town. We decided to buy some ice cream, despite the fact that it was 8:00 pm. (HE ACTUALLY PAID!)

We walked over to the park, which thankfully was empty, and sat on one of the benches. It was pretty dark out, since there was only a cresent moon in the night sky.

Out of the blue, he asked: "Hey Eddie? Is this your first date?"

I nearly choked on my ice cream. "Uh...um...yeah..."

"really?"

"Yes. What about you?" I asked.

"Believe it or not, but yeah."

I smirked. "Huh. Who would have known? ur first dates are with each other."

Jake chuckled. "Yeah. And to think, that four years ago, we would have been grossed out at the idea."

I laughed. "Remember how we first met?"

*Flashback*

(This is what I think happened when they first met.)

11 year old Eddie Malloy sat at her desk in the back. She hoped this would be a peaceful year.

Unfortunatly, her hopes came crashing down as she reconized the two twin boys that had dumped dead animals in front of her house.

One of them, was sitting in his seat, drawing. The other, however is the one who caught her eye the most. He wore a baseball cap and a baseball jacket. He had a gleam in his eyes as he realized who she was.

He caught her gaze and glared.

"Alright class, lets begin!" the teacher called out. She then took role call.

Eddie kept her eyes on the two boys, especially the one with the cap.

"Jake Hatford"

"Here" the boy called out. Ah, so his name is Jake. Jake Hatford.

"Josh Hatford"

"Here." the twin who was drawing raised his hand.

Jake and Josh Hatford. huh.

"Edith Ann Malloy"

Eddie raised her hand. "Please, call me Eddie."

She saw Jake narrow his eyes.

*Later*

Eddie walked nervously through the cafiteria. THankfully, Beth had this lunch.

She found her sister and made her way towards her. Unfortunatly, she nearly tripped.

She turned and saw that Jake kid, smirking at her. So he wanted to play dirty, huh?

Eddie glared, then dumped her tray on him. (She regreted that when she realized that she caused a scene.)

"What the heck?!" he yelped. Edde glared. "Dont mess with me Hatford. I'm not like normal girls."

"Yeah? Well, from what I can tell, you're a freak!"

Eddie was about to punch him when the teacher showed up.

*Flashback ends*

Jake laughed. "Yeah. Sorry about that."

I laughed too. "Its fine. It's in the past. Besides... if that didnt happen, our lives would have been pretty boring."

We both laughed.

"You know...I'm glad you dumped that tray on me. It gave me an excuse to keep on talking to you. Even if you hated me." Jake said.

I smiled. "Well, I'm glad you started that prank war. It's what made us all friends."

We both laughed again.

"Hey Eddie?" Jake asked.

I turned in time to have Jake's lips on mine.

After a minute, we pulled away, both blushing like mad.

"Eddie Malloy, if you're going to be my girlfriend, then we have to do this the right way." Jake said.

"What?"

Jake didnt answer. Instead, he held both my hands and said: "What do you say Whomper? Want to be my secret, and only, girlfriend?"

I blushed like a dork and nodded. "Yeah. Yeah, I want to. Even if you're a total jerk." I smirked.

Jake chuckled. "Look who's talking." he mutterd as he pulled me towards him to kiss me again.

Part 2: Beth and Josh

Bzzz Bzzz Bzzz

I looked up from my book as my phone vibrated on my desk. Sighing, I got up and crossed the room.

It was a message from Josh.

(Italics mean Josh's message and Bold Italics mean Beth's message)

Hey. Are you busy?

Hi. No, I'm not busy. Why?

Do you want to go do something?

Sure thing. But what exactly.

How about we go eat something?

Sounds great!

Just one thing though...

Yeah?

It's a date.

Sure thing :)

See you in a bit, Wierdo.

See you in a bit, Hatford.

I giggled happily. A date with Josh! YAY!

I quickly got dressed into lavender skiny jeans, a sky blue top, white flats and a white jacket. I pulled my hair from out of its braid, leaving it in waves. I simply put a sky blue bow in my hair. I grabbed my phone, then left.

Josh was waiting for me, wearing a blue plaid shirt, blue jeans, and black Converse shoes with a black jacket.

I hate to sound all mushy and stuff, but he. looked. so. darn. cute.

Josh smiled and held out his hand, which I happily took. We walked into town, hand in hand.

We arrived at a small little diner, which was practically empty. Sitting down in a small booth at the back, Josh grinned and said, "Well, you look cute."

I blushed. "Th-thanks."

Once we placed our orders, Josh turned back to me.

"You know, I'm surprised." he said.

"Why?"

"Not many girls go on a date with their ex-boyfriends for a second time...in four years."

I shrugged. "I'm not exactly normal, remember?"

Josh grinned. "You got that right, Wierdo."

I smiled. "Do you remember the last time we came here? We were barley in elementry."

"I remember it as if it was yesterday." he replied.

*flashback*

(My idea of how they went out in the first place.)

11 year old Josh Hatford led 10 year old Beth Malloy by the hand to the small diner.

"Josh? Where are we going?" Beth asked.

"Trust me." was all he replied.

He led her to the back, where they ordered a couple of soft drinks. (They did their best to ignore the waitress remarks of "Young love")

"Alright, Josh. Why did you make me come here with you?" Beth asked.

"I wanted to ask you something important, and I knew no one would bother us here." Josh said.

"Okay. Ask me."

Josh began to blush. "I-I know that we havent gotten along since we met, and I know we're still pretty young...but I...kind of like you..." he mummbled the last part.

"R-really?"

Josh nodded. "Yeah. And I wanted to ask... if... you would be my girlfriend?"

Beth's fair skien turned a light shade of pink. "Josh...are you seriously asking this, or is this part of the prank war?"

"It's not a prank, I swear!" Josh said.

"...I...I like you too, but...I dont know if I can trust you. What if you're toying with me?" Beth asked.

"If I am toying with you, I give you the full right to slap me." Josh said.

Beth smiled a little. "Do we have to tell?"

Josh shook his head. "No."

BEth thought it over. Then, she smiled and said "Yes."

*End of flashback*

We both smiled at the memory.

"Beth, in all seriousness...I wanted to tell you, that...I really did miss you. When you left four years ago. And I really was sad when we broke up that Febuary. At first, I thought I would get over it, but when I saw you again, I knew it was a total lie. I never did get over you. Also, I never dated anyone else after you. I thought it was all just a phase, and that nothing would ever happen again, until that night in the woods. And I really want to tell you that I really like you, even after all this time." Josh said, looking at me in the eyes.

I swallowed.

"Josh..." I trailed off. I didnt know what to say. (What that boy does to me.)

"Beth Malloy, would you be my girlfriend...again? Will you take me back?" Josh asked.

The butterflies in my stomache became fireworks.

I sighed. "I like you a lot too. I also missed you when I left. I was also heartbroken when we split up. I never did like another guy as much as I liked you. That night in the woods, means the world to me. And yes. Of course. I want to be with you again." As soon as those words left my mouth, Josh leaned across the table and kissed me.

Part 3:

Caroline and Wally

Caroline's POV

Where the hell did everyone go?

I wandered around my house for a bit. My parents werent home, they were in the next town for some meeting, i think.

Eddie and Beth both left somewhere, and I had no idea where the twins went. I sighed and went to my room.

I played my music on my phone as I lay on my bed thinking. Mainly about Wally.

Was he my boyfriend or not? We've held hands in front of people. He kissed me in front of our siblings. We had a romantic (yet scary) weekend alone in the woods together. (Well, sort of romantic... considering the fact that we were lost, some of us nearly died, I thought I was dying of cancer, and I got shot by a tranqualizer, not to mention the fact that there are still a few cougars on the loose.)

Darn it. I was thinking too much again. I sighed, and took a sip of my water. Since we found out that my sypmtoms were of dehydration, not cancer (which the fool of the docter had thought), I had to take water several times a day.

I decided maybe I shoud go to sleep early, when a shadow cast upon my curtain. The shadow was in the shape of a person! Someone was trying to break in!

"Mary? R-Ruth?" I squeaked. I slowly got up and backed away from my window. Just as I was gathering air in my lungs to scream, there was a knocking noise.

Wait a minute... burglers dont knock!

I held my breathe and shakily opened my curtain. I realized it was WALLY at my window!

I exhailed and opened my window.

"You total moron! I nearly shrieked my lungs out! What the hell are you doing here?!" I cried softly.

"Hehe. Sorry. You werent answering your phone." Wally said sheepishly. "I thought you might of been busy, but then I saw your light, so..." he trailed off.

I studied him. He was wearing a red plaid shirt, jeans, his red converse and a black jacket.

I sighed. "What did you need that was so important?"

"Well...get dressed into something you can move in. Then meet me outside." Wally said, then nearly slipped out the window.

"Wait, wait, wait! Doofus, just use the door, no one else is here!" I said. Wally grinned.

"Aw. You do care."

"Shut up! You already knew that!" I snapped. Wally snickered as he left my room. I watched ot my window until I made sure he was outside. Then I shut the curtain and got dressed.

I wore clothes based on what Wally was wearing.

I got dressed into a simple red dress, with a black belt around my waist; black boots; a red bow headband in my hair, and a black and red leather jacket.

I made sure to leave a note for my sisters, then left.

Wally was leaning on the tree, studying the nightsky.

"Hey." I said, and stood in front of him. He looked down and took my hand. He grinned and pulled me into a kiss.

I blushed when he pulled away.

"It's been a while." he said. I nodded, smiling.

"Come on." he said.

"Where are we going?" I asked.

"Its a surprise." was all that Wally said.

"Okay..."

After a while he led me to a small garden at the edge of Buckman. Wally turned. "Close your eyes."

I gave him a puzzled look, but closed my eyes anyway. I felt Wally lead me in diffrent directions before he said "Open them."

I opened my eyes, and gaped. The garden lit with light surrounding the middle, but there was nothing in the middle at all, except grass. It was really simple, but pretty. I looked over at Wally, who was grinning.

"Come with me." he said. I followed him to the small clearing, where we took off our jackets. After tossing them aside, he grabbed his phone and the song "Daylight" by Maroon 5 began to play. He took my hand with his right hand and placed his left hand on my waist and began DANCING with me.

Tears filled up my eyes. "I-is th-this what you were hiding from m-me?" I asked. Wally nodded.

"Yeah. I got Mary to teach me to dance."

"Th-that-s why Mary asked about the song!" I realized out loud. Wally chuckled.

"Yeah."

I wrapped my arms around his shoulders and he wrapped his arms around my waist, and we just slow danced to the music.

I didnt realize I was crying, until Wally pulled away. "Why are you crying?"

"I-I dont know! Th-this is s-s-so sweet!" I said. He smiled.

When the song finished, Wally looked deep into my eyes.

"Caroline Malloy, you were my enemy, my oppisite, and my nightmare. But now, you are my friend, my other half, and my dream. I know we didnt start off right, but I'm glad we didnt because then none of this might have ever happened. I'm such an idiot for not realizing this until now. Those few nights in the woods together opened my eyes. I dont care if you are crazy, that is what makes you special. You will alway be my Crazy Caroline, no matter what. Will you please be my girlfriend?"

I began crying like a moron again. "Y-yes! Of course I want to be your girlfriend!"

Wally grinned, wiped my eyes and kissed me.

"Thank you! Now, how about a bright smile?"

I smiled and he grinned again.

"There's my Crazy Caroline." he said, making me laugh.

Then, he leaned down and kissed me once again.

Normal POV

Unkown to Caroline or Wally, Peter and Mary grinned and high fived each other.

"Yes!" Peter whispered.

"It worked!" Mary whispered too.

They grinned at each other again.

"We should give them privecy." Mary said quietly. Peter nodded.

They climbed down from behind the wall they were clinging on to. Peter jumped down and helped Mary down.

"Thanks." Mary muttered, turning light pink.

Peter smiled. "No problem."

Ruth smiled softly at Scott who was next to her.

"So that's your story?" Scott asked her, his black eyes open wide.

Ruth nodded sadly. "Yeah."

"But... how...you're..." Scott stammered.

"What?"

"Everytime I see you, you're always so cheerful...so full of happyness. Always with that bright smile of yours..." Scott muttered.

Ruth felt her cheeks grow warm. "I try to stay on the positive side."

Scott shook his head. "I have no idea how you do it... but...its something I now admire you for."

Ruth smiled again, and this time, he actually smiled. A little, but it was something.

Part 4: Everyone

Normal POV

If you walk around the town of Buckman, beginning at Island Ave, you would see Ruth Malloy, cousin of the Malloy sisters walking alongside of Scott Hatford, the cousin of the Hatford brothers. Ruth and Scott just started talking, but if you look closely, you could see the beiginning of a friendship.

Now, if you walk down even further, you would come across a small diner. The diner, which isnt so popular, only has 8 customers. Among them, are Josh Hatford and Beth Malloy, who are having their first date in 4 years. They just got back together. As they eat, they are holding hands, like they used to. The only thing that troubles them, is the way they plan on breaking the news to their families.

If you take a turn from the diner, and keep going down the block, you would come across a small park. The only ones there, sitting on a bench, are Jake Hatford and Eddie Malloy. They too, are holding hands. They are talking civily to each other, which would have shocked anyone who would have seen them. They are not exactly worried. Not at the moment anyway.

Further down, walking side by side, are Peter Hatford and his new friend Mary Hatford. He just found out that she knows most of Beth's recipies for cookies. He is also delighted to find out that baking is a hobby of hers. Mary, amused, promised him a batch of cookies. This is going to be one intresting friendship...

And last but not least, if you walk all the way to the edge of town, you will come across a garden. THere, in the center are the two least likely people to be slow dancing together: Wally Hatford and Caroline Malloy. They just became official. (Caroline managed to stop crying eventually.) Wally is silently thanking Mary, and promising to repay her somehow. Caroline is delighted that her new boyfriend did something so emotional and outstanding. But she is most of all, happy to be there with him, not arguing...for now.

And for a small moment of time, things are really peaceful in Buckman.

But how long is THAT going to last?

It may seem like the end, but I swear its not.
