CHAPTER 13: Tryouts

Jake's POV

After school, we all decided to hang out around town before going home.

While we were walking, we passed a big poster saying "Carnival In Town."

"Hey! The carnival is coming!" Peter said.

"Carnival? Here?" Ruth asked. I nodded. "Yeah. Every year the carnival comes into town, and gives a parade, then there is an opening night, which is free, and they perform and stuff. Then they have this huge party. After that, the carnival stays open for a whole week. It's pretty fun."

"Cool! Are you guys going to go?" Caroline asked.

Josh shrugged. "Usually, we do."

I suddenly remembered something. "Hey Caroline! You should try out! You too Mary!"

"Oh yeah. They have this musical performance thing on opening night. It's a sort of like a musical play. " Wally said.

"Awsome! I'll tryout! Jake's right though, Mary. You should do it too!" Caroline said, jumping up and down.

"I don't know...maybe." Mary replyed.

"Oh come one! I dont want to do it alone! It'll be fun!" Caroline begged.

Mary thought about it then smiled. "Alright. I'll do it!"

Peter cheered. "Now we really have an excuse to go!"

"It should be pretty easy. They always need volunteers and stuff. In the end though, they dont have enough people, so they start pulling random names of everyone in town. You never know who might end up in it." Josh said.

"Pfft, even Jake?" Scott asked. I glared and shoved him playfully. "Yeah, even me. But it hasn't happened to me, and hopefully it never will."

"Don't jinx it." Eddie said, smirking.

Malloy POV

"Come on Mary! We have to be there at exactly 7:45!" Caroline yelled to Mary who was upstairs.

"Alright, I'm going!" Mary called back, then ran downstairs.

The two girls went over to the high school theater, where they signed up and then waited paitently.

Finally after the tryouts for the boys, the it was time for the girl tryouts.

Singing went first.

"Next up is...Mary Sayers Malloy."

Mary took a deep breathe, and walked to the mircrophone they had set up.

Mary introduced herself first, with a shaking voice in the beginning.

Then she took a breath, and began to sing:

"The world comes to life

and everything's bright

from beginning to end

when you have a friend by your side,

that helps you to find

the beauty of all when you'll open your heart

When Mary finished, everyone clapped, and Caroline cheered.

"The next one up is..."Caroline L. Malloy."

Caroline blinked. She didnt know she had to sing!

But still, she told herself...the show must go on.

Caroline walked up to the microphone and began to sing something that reminded her of a certain someone:

(A/N: I don't own this song. The song is called "Never Knew I Needed" by Ne-Yo. It reminded me of the boys and girls...when they're shipped together anyway...")

When she finished, she smiled and everyone clapped, especially Mary.

"Next is Belinda Garcia"

"What?!"Caroline whisper yelled to Mary, who shrugged her shoulders.

Belinda was obviously dressed up for this. She had a pink party dress, with black low-heels and had her reddish-brown hair curled and styled. She even wore make-up!

Belinda sneered over at Caroline and Mary, before turning to look at the judges, fluttering her eyelashes.

She then began to sing.

She wasn't entirly good, but she wasnt that bad either. She was pretty adverage.

When she finished, she went back into her seat.

After only 5 more girls, they had the acting tryouts, and then they were able to leave.

"You'll have the results by Friday. We'll put the list up on the doors of the city hall." a woman told them. "You may leave home now, thank you."

Mary and Caroline walked towards home, when suddenly Caroline was pushed to the ground.

"You think you're so great huh?" Belinda sneered down at her.

"Hey! What's your problem?!" Caroline snapped.

"Shut up! Little Miss "Oh I'm so great!" Yeah, just because you're dating a Hatford, and just because you think you can sing and act! Well listen up: I was here first. It's MY spotlight. Got it?" Belinda said.

"Look. We don't want-" Mary was cut off when Belinda pushed her down too.

"Zip it. I've heard about you. My sister told me that you're that runt who's wanting to date Peter Hatford. Hey, my sister told me she gave your stupid twin a well deserved beating for hanging around Scott Hatford." Belinda laughed. "I should do the same, what do you say to that?"

"Stay away from her, you evil jerk!" Caroline yelled, and put herself over Mary. "Leave her alone, and leave my sisters alone. We've done nothing to you!"

"Oh yeah? Taking my boyfriend's spot on the baseball team is one thing." Belinda said.

"Oh come on, that isn't even a real team! Besides, she's a pitcher like Jake Hatford, not a catcher!" Caroline snapped. She wasn't going to tolerate this jerk bashing her sister!

Belinda glared. "You and your sisters are nothing, you hear? All you are is a freak, a nerd, a wanna be, a witch, and a wimp."

Caroline growled. "Eddie is not a freak, she's an individual. Beth is not a nerd. She's smart. I'm not a wanna be, I'm talented. Ruth is not a witch, she's beautiful. And Mary is not a wimp, she's strong. And nothing you do will ever harm us, because we have each other. And nothing you do is going to keep us away from the Hatfords, because we're a team!"

Belinda rolled her eyes. "Whatever. Stay out of my way. Or I'll destroy you." and with that, she turned and walked away.

"UGH! I just wanna grab her by those stupid curls, rip them off of her stupid head, and shove them down her throat and then kich her-"

"Caroline!"

"Sorry Beth. But anyway, she just...ugh!" Caroline yelled. She. is. mad.

At the moment, they were all in Eddie's room. Eddie lay on her bed, her legs propped up onto the wall, with Caroline sitting next to her, leaning against the wall. Beth sat on Eddie's chair, and Mary sat on the floor, with Ruth laying down, her head on Mary's lap. They were currently having a minature slumber party.

"As much as we all want to, we can't. Ben is the Mayor's son, and Belinda his prissy girlfriend. We can't do anything, it's their word against ours." Beth pointed out before taking a handfull of popcorn and passing it to Caroline.

Eddie groaned. "If they come near any of you, I swear I'll kick Ben's-"

"Eddie!"

"Sorry Beth. And if those other skanks try messing with you guys too, I'll whack them with my baseball bat!"

Ruth sighed. "Lin is just as bad."

"Yeah. We've all noticed." Eddie replied, gesturing to Ruth's mulitple bruises and scrapes.

Mary shook her head. "Well...maybe we can just ignore her?"

"Are you kidding? She's like an attention succubus or something." Eddie said.

"Really, Eddie? You had to compare her to a succubus? That's insulting to the succubus!" Beth said.

The sisters all exchanged glances in silence, then burst out into unconrollable laugter.
