CHAPTER 18: Opening Night
Wally's POV
The town carnival's opening night is only five days away. Everyone is busy, trying to prepare for it, especially the cast of the opening show. Caroline is getting more excited everyday. Mary is getting more freaked out everyday. Peter and I like to hang out on the sidelines of the stage and watch them practice, whenever we aren't helping out of course. The people from the carnival let us hang around as long as we help them with things.
But on this particular day, something happened.
It started out with the usual rehersals. Things were going good. Until Belinda "flew" onto the stage on her witch's broomstick. Peter was watching from the off of the stage this time, close the the audience, while I was on the sidelines, helping with the curtains.
Anyway, things were going smoothly until Belinda tried to nudge Mary off of the stage with her broomstick. The push did throw Mary off balance and she fell off the stage with a shriek, but luckily, Peter threw himself forward and caught her.
Unfortunatly, Belinda also threw HERSELF off balance and fell off the stage, broomstick and all. But no one caught HER. She landed with a loud THUMP! on the floor and she wailed in pain.
Everyone rushed to check on her.
She was crying and cradling her arm, which was at an odd angle.
Someone called the paramedics and they were fast to arrive.
One paramedic took a look at her arm and said, "Your arm is clearly broken. It could even be fractured."
She started to howl. "No! No it can't be! The play's only five days away!"
"Belinda, you're injured. You can't be in the show. And anyway, even if you weren't injured, you would of had a good chance of not being in the show after you obviously pushed Mary off the stage." The show manager said.
"It was an accident!" Belinda wailed.
The manager ignored her and called her parents to pick her up.
A man who was playing the Tinman spoke up. "What are we going to do about the Wicked Witch's part?"
The manager rubbed his forehead. "Susana, you're the understudy of the Wicked Witch." he said, turning to a young woman.
Susana frowned. "Yes, but I also play the Scarecrow."
"Can anyone else play the Scarecrow?" Caroline asked.
"In under five days? We need someone who's good at memorization to memorize the lines quickly." The manager said.
Suddenly, everyone turned to look at me. For a minute, I was confused on why they were starting at me, but then I relized.
"No." I said simply.
Everyone started pleading, saying, "Why not?" and "Please?" and "We need you!" and stuff like that.
I stared them down.
That is, until Caroline started pleading.
"Please, Wally?" she asked. She had her begging face on.
"No." I replied. "And don't give me that look."
Caroline widened her eyes, stuck out her lower lip, and clasped her hands in front of her. She looked up at me and let out a smal whimper as she looked up at me.
I tried staring her down too, but like always, I couldn't. Facepalming, I groaned and said, "Fine!"
"Yay!" Caroline squealed and hugged me tight. She smiled up at me and I felt my ears grow red.
Everyone cheered and went back to what they were doing, this time, I joined them on the stage with a script in my hand. The Scarecrow part wasn't too hard, I already knew most of his lines thanks to reading Caroline's script a few times.
Susana was the new Wicked Witch, and thankfully she already knew the lines. Honestly, I liked her better as the Witch rather than Belinda, who was still crying when her parents finally arrived.
We carried on with the rehersal, until we got to the part where I was forced to sing "If I Only Had a Brain" .
I hate my singing voice. I have literally sang three times in my life.
Caroline had to give me her puppy dog eyes to get me to sing, and when I finally did, she gasped in excitment.
"Wally! Your voice!" she exclaimed from the sidelines of the stage.
I frowned. "I know, I hate it. It's terrible."
Mary gapped up at me. "You're kidding right? You're amazing!"
Peter, standing with Caroline, was shocked too. "I swear that I have never heard you sing by yourself in my life until now."
"Sing it again!" Caroline said, doing a bouncing motion.
I sighed and I sang:
(Disclaimer: I don't own this song, it belongs to Disney's Wizard of Oz)
I could while away the hours
Conferrin' with the flowers,
Consulting with the rain;
And my head I'd be a scratchin'
While my thoughts are busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.
I'd unravel ev'ry riddle for my
Individdle
In trouble or in pain
With the thoughts that I''ll be thinkin'
I could be another Lincoln
If I only had a brain.
Oh, I, could tell you why
The oceans near the shore
You could think of things I'd never
Thunk before,
And then I'd sit down and think some more.
I would not be just a muffin',
My head all full of stuffin',
My heart all full of pain;
And perhaps I'd deserve you and be
Even worthy even you
If I only had a brain.
When I finished, everyone clapped.
"You've got skills Wally!" the show manager said.
My ears turned red. "Thanks..."
I caught Caroline's eye and she smiled proudly.
Normal POV
Five days passed and opening night finally arrived.
Wally frowned at himself as he looked in the mirror. He was wearing a Scarecrow costume, complete with makeup and straw. Peter was laughing at him, and Wally grabbed his head and held him in a choke hold.
They suffled for a while, until thay heard someone clear their throat.
Caroline and Mary were standing in front of them, in their own cosutmes. Caroline had her hair done in loose curls, wore a white ball gown, and had a white crown on top of her head. She carried a long, white, wand. Her make up consisted of simple white eyeshadow and white eyeliner that made her sparkling brown eyes pop. Mary wore a blue plaid dress, and had her chestnut blonde hair in two pigtails on the side of her head, and she carried a basket with a stuffed Toto dog. She didn't have shoes on yet, since she had to be barefoot until the red ruby slippers were handed to her during the play.
Wally let go of Peter, accidentally dropping him, and he was too busy staring at Mary to catch himself and he landed on the floor.
Caroline laughed. "Close your mouths boys, there's flies."
Before the boys could say anything, the show manager yelled "Opening scene!" and they all scrambled to their places.
The play ran smoothly.
Mary, Caroline, and Wally sang their solos, and their families clapped the loudest, with Peter cheering from the sidelines. (The show manager had to remind Peter to stay silent several times). As Wally sang his solo, he heard Jake exclaim "Wally can sing?"
When the show was over, the audience clapped and cheered. Jake and Josh even whistled a few times.
After the show, Wally finally got rid of his costume, which had started to itch and washed the makeup off his face as fast as possible.
Caroline also changed out of her costume, but Wally had to convince her that it was not proper attire to wear to a carnival. Mary stayed in her dress, but threw on a pair of converse.
They eventually joined with their siblings at the carvival.
Jake and Josh tackled Wally and said, "Wally's got a singing career in his future!"
Wally punched them and shook the twins off. He turned to Ruth.
"Thanks for making the last minute costume for me." Wally told her.
Ruth grinned. "It's what I do."
"Guys, I'm starving! Let's eat!" Peter said, and pointed to the many food booths.
Everyone rolled their eyes.
"Peter, when are you going to not be hungry?" Jake asked.
"When I'm dead." Peter remarked, and grabbed Mary and led her to a hot dog booth.
Peter's POV
Tonight is the night that I'm going to tell Mary how I feel.
And I'm going to do it the traditional way, the way my brothers did it: by doing something crazy.
I really hope it works.
Thank you all for your wonderful patience, love, and support. I love you all so much! .
I hope you enjoyed it!
I'm so sorry about any spelling or grammer mistakes, I just suck at spelling and I don't have the correcting grammer thing on my computer :/
