My p.o.v.
That night I couldn't sleep worth shit, every time I closed my eyes I saw flames coming at me. And when I got exhausted and drifted to sleep I dreamed of my family being engulfed in flames, I would spring awake.
Mentally cursing to not wake the sleeping Nikki I toss back my covers and get out of bed giving up on sleeping.
I tip toe making my bed and to the bathroom to get dressed. Jeans and a tank top under my hoodie, I carry my shoes to the door and quietly leave.
I walk the halls just wandering trying to just distract my mind.
"Hey only guests are allowed up here!" a voice calls out behind me.
Turning to see who it was I see Jeanist again.
I simply hold up my key card not wanting to talk and just turn and keep walking. Suddenly I'm bound by jean material.
Letting out a breath I look the blond in the eyes. "I am a guest, I just couldn't sleep and didn't want to wake my friend so I'm wandering till it's a reasonable hour. Good enough?"
I knew it sounded rude and bitchy but dammit I was tired and not a people person in the first place.
He looked like he didn't believe me. "Whatever, why don't you let me go and we'll go to the front desk and you can see. Then when I'm right you can owe me a cup of coffee and catch me up on events here."
He looks at me oddly and in my tired brain it took me a minute to realize that sounded flirtatious. "Wait that came out wong….don't get the wrong idea I'm engaged."
The tension relaxed slightly from his shoulders and he released me and we walked downstairs to the front desk. Thankfully the manager sees me and grins yelling.
"Ms. Sarah is everything alright with the room? You must not sleep much."
I look to Jeanist like 'see told ya.'
"The room is wonderful Ma'am. I couldn't sleep and was wandering when Jeanist here found me is all." I answer smiling at her.
Yawning I stretch looking at the clock reading it was five in the morning. "Ms. Manager, do you happen to have a paper I can borrow? I need to find a job and a more permanent place."
bShe smiles reaching down and grabbing a paper for me to which I gratefully take. MIght as well look for places hiring.
'Hopefully I can find some under the table job because of no social securities and technically we don't exist here.'
"So Jeany, where are we going for that coffee?" I ask, turning to face the man who now looked kind of sheepish.
"Oh! Coffee date? The best coffee in town is just two blocks down, very good and very reasonable prices. Owner is my friend. I'll let him know you going." the manager says the phone already in her hand.
I chuckled as she reminded me of a pushy aunt or something. "Man you must be popular for people to try setting you up with me." Jeanist says looking at me closely. "Who are you exactly?"
I turn to him shrugging while walking out the door. "Just some random girl who just moved here, no one special. I'm not a hero, just a plain jane."
Reading the paper as we walk I circle a couple places to check out later that looked promising. The jobs would have to be under the table which meant word of mouth and talking with people to see if they needed help.
"What is your quirk?" he questions, walking hands in pockets just looking around at the streets as shops were starting to open.
"Well that's a personal question, why crushing on another man's woman?" I divert the question.
This wasn't someone I really knew or cared to know as he was a good enough guy but just not one to catch my interest in any way.
"Of course not there is no honor in stealing another's woman." He retorts looking offended.
"So tell me where are the worst of the crimes? Are any of these bad neighborhoods or are they decent areas?"
He takes the paper I held out to him taking the pen from me and crossing out some of the places. "This is right in the middle of the Yakuza territory. This is in FatGum's but is far from the city. This is in Erasers area and is usually pretty good. The best one here would be right there." He says pointing to a tall building to our left.
I nod taking the paper eyeing the one in Erasers and FatGums turf. Those would be good I think. As the house in FatGum was in the outskirts of town on a chunk of land. The condo was in Erasers with very little yard but Nikki would have a better chance of meeting him.
"Thanks. I think this will make up for earlier, I can get my own coffee." I say flipping through the pages as I see a little cafe that looked quite homey ahead of us.
"I do have to get back to patrol, would you like an autograph?"
Shaking my head no I pick up my pace a bit. "Nah thanks though. See ya around."
I could feel him staring as I walked away and I just figured I confused him as I did just turn down an autograph from one of the most popular heroes.
My phone vibrates in my pocket so I pull it out. My heart drops as I see my sister's name.
"Hey.." I start when she interrupts me.
"A hey sis I'm fine, I'm just staying at Nikki's would have been nice." she says relief clearly in her voice with a hint of anger.
I mentally curse as I sit on a bench in front of some flowers. "Sorry...it wasn't planned….some stuff just happened. I'm not sure when I'll be back.." I didn't put the "if" because if this was permanent then I would have to lie my ass off or simply make it seem like I was dead. My family would never accept this and would spend the rest of their lives trying to find me or bring me home...so would David.
"Will you take care of Zoey please?" I ask trying not to let my emotions into my voice.
I hear a sigh but she agrees. "Yeah but you owe me for this. When you come home she needs dog food."
"I'll get some then." I say and she hangs up.
I want to throw my phone but restrain myself. Going online I order dog food to have it delivered and set it up to have it delivered routinely for the rest of Zoey's life.
I pull up my contacts and call my boss next letting her know I wouldn't be at work and that I was sorry for such short notice about quitting. Of course she lashed out about sorry not being good enough and that she needed a written notice and such.
I hang up, unable to talk about the truth and ignored her calls as she blew up my phone. Turning it off I walk into the cafe feeling like absolute shit.
"Can I get a white chocolate cherry iced mocha please? Large with ten shots. Thank you."
The barista's eyes were like saucers. That was an odd combo and a lot of shots but fuck I needed the caffiene and the comfort.
I sat down while I waited going through the paper looking for more places and just skimming the news section.
I nearly jumped when the guy put the coffee in front of me. "Rough morning already?"
Looking up I see he's a good looking guy but looked oddly familiar like I should know him from somewhere.
"You have no idea. Just moved here so looking for a job and a place." I say rubbing my face in frustration.
"Well I could use some help around here if you're interested and know how to make coffee or cook." he says taking a seat across from me.
We were the only ones in the place which seemed odd but then again it was super early still.
"I'm not an expert but I'm a quick learner."
He grins and then it hits me this is Mike. his hair was down and he wasn't in his hero outfit that's why he looked so familiar, I silently wondered why I didn't find him loud.
'Maybe it's my quirk?' I muse as he motions for me to follow him to the back.
He starts showing me how things work and I quickly see where the burning smell had been coming from that I had just figured was the coffee here.
He was a terrible cook. By the time I glance at the clock it's almost nine.
"Crap hey Sir I need to let my friend know I'm ok, she was sleeping when I left this morning." I called over to Mike who was delivering a coffee to a patron.
He gives me a thumbs up and I quickly turn on my phone ignoring the missed calls from work to call Nikki who answers sounding slightly panicked. "Sarah?! Where are you?"
"I'm good. I'm two blocks to the left and then take a right from the hotel. I found a job by chance from a certain loudmouth that you love." I explain flipping the eggs on the grill and starting to place some bacon. "Look I can't stay on the phone but I just wanted to let you know, I get off, he said around three today."
"Oh thank god. How the fuck did you find a job so fast?!!" She demands and I hear a thump so figure she had plopped onto the couch in the room.
I grin plating the eggs with some toast. "I got lucky. Why don't you stick there and practice your quirk because we don't need things flying at people or people flying around."
Hearing a groan she says. "Fiiiine this is so not fair you get to meet so many cool heroes and I'm stuck here."
I roll my eyes and slide the plate to the warmer area. "Order up!"
"Shit sorry I'll let you get back to work. See ya."
We hang up and I slide my phone into my pocket and continue the orders.
"Hey kiddo go ahead and take a break I can handle it for a bit." Mike says through the order window and behind him I see eyes widen and panicked looks.
"Thanks sir but I'm ok, this is something I enjoy and I'm used to long days so this is nothing."
He shrugs then his eyes widen. "Hey I forgot to introduce myself earlier and get your name! I'm Hizashi Yamada."
I blink at him. "Sarah. Sorry if I butcher your name I'm terrible at remembering or pronouncing them."
He laughs and waves me off. "Same so Sarah that's American right?"
I nod flipping some pancakes while taking a drink of coffee. "Yeah. mind if I call you Zashi?"
"Sure kid, so what brought you here?"
I shrug, handing him a plate of food. "Don't know yet."
Through the window I see Aizawa get the plate of pancakes. Though I recognize him no one else seems to. He wore all black t-shirt and pants with his hair in a bun.
When he comes back I ask a question that had been bugging me.
"So Zashi, why do you own a coffee shop? You seem more like a teacher or something. " I ask, leaning on the heated shelf feeling warm.
He shrugs smiling. "It was my parents and when they retired they left it to me. Good guess on the teacher part I do teach at UA but with school out I manage the shop. When I'm teaching my normal manager would oversee it. Though he just quit this morning right before you came in."
That made sense in a way. "So if the position is open could I get trained for it or is there another person in line?"
He crosses his arms at me shrugging. "Nope. I could train you up I suppose, it would be helpful when school starts back up."
Things go pretty smoothly with only one complaint about the eggs being a little too done. But compared to Mike's food mine was obviously just right.
Once the shop was closed we cleaned and he showed me some of the book work and paperwork that needed to be done daily.
At three thirty I manage to evade more small talk and leave. I head back to the hotel wondering what Nikki had managed to do seems she was chaotic without supervision.
As I walk my phone pings.
Pulling it out as I walk I see a message from my coworker asking me where I was. Before I can reply I see David messaged me earlier saying good morning beautiful.
I stop nearly making the person behind me run into me. My heart dropped at his name.
