Hey all! Time for a new update :)! I recently updated a new story! I know, right? You are all probably thinking: Knifez, buddy, you update this damn story like every three months! You can't do another story! I know, I know, but trust me, it'll work. I'm planning on updating much more frequently now. But if any of you guys want to read my new fix, it's on my profile: Despair Island.
Now, as for this chapter, there won't really be any action, as, if there were action every chapter, the story would be over very quickly! So, sorry to anyone who is only looking for a gore-only fic. This story has character development and a main plot line.
Without further ado, let's resume the cliffhanger!
"Agh!" The screaming continued as Chef ran towards the source. He was joined by Ezekiel and Aidan.
"What on earth is that?" Aidan asked, panicked.
"I don't know." Chef puffed. "Hopefully nothing bad."
The trio turned the corner to see Bridgette, struggling to get away from a bandit, whose legs had been crushed by an exploding building.
"Help." The bandit groaned, grasping for what he thought was life itself with his charred fingers.
"Get him off of me!" Bridgette screamed, kicking at his arm. He would not let go. Only when Chef took out his knife and slit the man's throat did his grip on Bridgette's ankle loosen.
Geoff came barreling around a corner, knocking Aidan over as he rushed towards his screaming girlfriend.
"Babe." He asked, terror in his voice. "Are you okay?" Bridgette nodded, collapsing into her boyfriend's chest as the adrenaline slowly left her body.
"Can I take her back to camp?" He asked Chef, who nodded. The duo left the scene.
"Thank God." Chef breathed, leaning against the wall.
Aidan picked himself off the ground. "Don't want anyone else to die?" He asked, right on the money.
"Yeah." Chef nodded solemnly.
"Well too bad." Aidan frowned. "The fact of the matter is, Chef. You've lost people, and you are going to lose people. That's how this world works, so there is no use getting upset when you lose someone."
Chef shrugged. "That may be so, but it's not a bad thing to feel grief."
"Yeah, I guess." Aidan sighed. "But I don't want the grief of this group to put my life in danger if you can't all get moving when the time comes."
"C'mon, soldier. Let's go scavenge for supplies. Sun's going down." Chef said, yawning and changing the subject.
Aidan frowned and walked after him.
Bridgette and Geoff walked back to camp, where Cody, Sierra, Zekitrov, Shuie and Eva were. Eva had been set on guard duty.
"What's up?" Cody asked weakly, still hurt from his concussion. He tried to sit up upon seeing how upset Bridgette was. "Is she okay? Ow!" He flopped back down.
"I'm fine." Bridgette shuddered. "Just…some dying bandit grabbed my ankle when I walked by. Gave me a heart attack."
"Sounds yucky." Zekitrov nodded. "Was it Leo?" He turned to Shuie. "I bet it was Leo. Leo always was a clingy son of a bitch, huh?" He cracked up.
"What's up with that guy?" Sierra asked, shooting a weird glance at the laughing young man. "Is he mentally ill or something?"
"No." Shuie answered sullenly. "He's just a dumbass."
"Are you sure?" Sierra asked again.
"Yes."
"Sure-ity sure?"
"Yes."
"Super sure-ity sure?"
"Yes."
"Super DUPER sure-ity-"
"Shut up!" Shuie snapped. "Jesus Christ, you are almost worse then him." He jerked his head at Zekitrov and wiggled against the bonds holding him. "Damn it all, I can't even sleep. This sucks."
"Oh well." Eva scowled, "Maybe if you weren't the scum of the Earth then you wouldn't be in this situation. You think of that?"
Zekitrov grinned. "Can it, dyke!"
Shuie elbowed him. "Shut up." He hissed.
Eva's vein twitched in her forehead, and her hand went to her knife, but only for a moment.
"Eva!" Chef called from a distance. "I found a cellar but there's debris all over it. Can you help me clear it up?"
Eva growled. "Thank your lucky stars, of you would've been sans a finger." She threatened, causing Zekitrov to giggle. Eva stomped off.
"I like her." Zekitrov smiled, leaning back against the stump he was bound on. "Got spunk."
"You're going to get yourself killed, you retard." Shuie groaned.
"Sha-Lightning's number one! Sha-Lightning loves some fun!" Lightning sang to himself as he searched the ransacked little town. So far he had found three assault rifles, one of them empty, forty five rounds of ammunition for the pistols, five boxes of twenty round ammo for the assault rifles, and a backpack full of canned food. He was now heading back to camp to drop the load off.
"Wow, nice haul." Shuie said, his eyebrows raised as Lightning dropped his stuff onto the ground.
"Sha-thanks. Lightning has a knack for finding stuff." Lightning said, preening.
"Do you, now?" Heather scoffed as she walked in with Alejandro.
"Sha-yeah!" Lightning smirked, twirling the assault rifle he found in his hand. He mimed shooting a zombie. "Sha-touchdown."
Shuie stared at him. "This guy is almost a bigger idiot then Zekitrov." He groaned. "Why did I have to get picked up by the weirdest bunch of people?"
"Sha-Lightning takes defence to that!" Lightning said.
Heather face palmed.
"Lightning being a genius again?" Noah snarked as he came back with Trent, Gwen and Cody.
"Alright Maggots, settle down." Chef said, also coming back to camp. "I'm too tired to deal with your bickering."
Within five minutes, everyone was back at camp. Some were more successful then others at finding things.
"Nothing?" Chef asked Beth, who shook her head. The cook sighed. "Oh well. We still got a decent haul. There is probably enough guns for everyone now." He turned to Izzy and James, who had been keeping track. "How many we got?"
"Nine assault rifles," James started, "fourteen hand guns, the shotgun, and two hunting rifles."
"That makes twenty-six!" Izzy chimed in.
"Good." Chef nodded. "That's one for all of us plus two for three. That means myself, Brick and Eva will have both an Assault Rifle and a handgun."
"What?" Jo protested, "Why them and not me?"
"Because we don't have enough, that's why!" Chef snapped, tossing her a gun. "If we find another one then I'll let you have it, just stop yo' bitching!"
Jo grumbled under her breath as she sat down next to the fire.
"What a day." Trent sighed, his head in Gwen's lap.
"It's kind of funny, ya know?" Ezekiel said, cleaning his pistol. "It's really morbid, but you kind of get used to the deaths, eh?"
"I'm glad I'm not the only one." Courtney mumbled sleepily, cuddling against Duncan.
"We have to keep them forever in our minds, though." Beth whimpered, not at all looking like she could just 'get over' the deaths of her friends.
"Farm girl is right." Chef nodded. "Just because we ain't bawling our eyes out doesn't mean that we shouldn't feel sad."
"I don't think anyone here doesn't feel sad, Chef." Cody mumbled sleepily from Sierra's lap.
"Let's hope so, or we'll have ourselves a serious problem." Chef frowned. "Now it's getting late and I wanna be out of here bright and early tomorrow, I ain't a fan of sleeping out in the open, but we won't all fit comfortably in the cars. Whose on first watch?"
"Me!" Zekitrov said excitedly.
Chef ignored him. "Anyone?"
"Sure, why not?" Duncan shrugged. "You game, princess?" he asked Courtney.
Courtney chuckled. "Screw that, I'm going to sleep!"
Duncan sighed. "Fine, c'mon, who else is going to watch with me?"
"Sure, bro!" Geoff said.
Bridgette nodded. "I will too."
Courtney sighed, irritated. "Great, well if Bridgette's watching then of course I wanna watch too. She's one of the few people here I can stand being around for long periods of time."
"Feeling the love." Justin scoffed.
"C'mon, let's not bicker, children." Noah said with a condescending edge to his voice. "Let's just get off to bed before guns start being drawn."
Chef snorted. "Good idea. Let's head off to bed, all."
Within fifteen minutes everyone was settled and ready for bed, falling asleep under the starry night.
The sun was just starting to peak over the horizon when Chef was startled awake.
"What's going on?" He asked, blinking in the gray daylight.
"About thirty zombies, eight o'clock. Two hundred yards." Came Brick's authoritative voice.
"Have they spotted us?" Chef said, quickly strapping all his munitions to his body.
"I don't believe so, but they are gradually heading our way. I suggest a quiet wake up tactic and escape through the cars." Brick replied.
Chef nodded. "Good plan, soldier. Start waking people up."
Brick nodded and scrambled out into the dim light of the morning. You could tell it was going to be a bright and sunny day, albeit a bit chilly.
Within ten minutes everyone was roused, and for good measure Chef had duck-taped Zekitrov's mouth shut so he didn't start making noise.
"Get in the cars." Chef said, checking around to make sure no supplies were forgotten.
There were six cars, but there were also six problems.
"Uh, Chef?" Alejandro gulped as he tried to start one of the cars. "The car isn't starting…"
"Neither is mine." Duncan hollered, panic in his voice.
"Harold! Cody! Noah! Find out what the hell is wrong with those cars!"
"I'll go too!" James limped over to Harold, his injury still paining him.
Within twenty seconds the problem was diagnosed.
"The spark plug wires have been disconnected." Cody said, relieved. "It shouldn't take too long, but with six cars it'll be a few minutes…unless anyone else knows how to do it?"
"Is it anything like that of a tractor?" Ezekiel asked as Cody started reconnecting the wires to the first car.
"Nope." Cody sighed.
"Not to cause panic, but DUDES! The zombies are getting closer!" Geoff said, hugging Bridgette tightly.
The zombies were now a hundred yards away, but a couple had smelled the group, and were picking up speed.
"Try not too shoot until the last second." Chef hissed, as three of the zombies started jog/running.
"I got the first one! People, get in!" Cody whispered, and Courtney, Duncan, Harold, Lightning, James, Ezekiel, and Beth got into the first car. Duncan was driving, with Courtney next to him. Harold and James were in the middle seats, and Lightning, Beth and Ezekiel sat in the way back.
Duncan started the car up and it hummed to life. "Thank god." He groaned, rolling down his window. "Chef, where are we heading?"
Chef finally had to blast one of the zombies head's apart. Bits of brain matter was spattered on his face as he turned to roar at Duncan. "Go south!" He said, pointing to one direction the nearby road was going. "Take two lefts and then a right, and stop at high noon. Wait an hour, if we ain't there, then keep moving."
Duncan nodded, his face pale. "We're moving." He told his passengers. He reversed down the dirt path, away from the ramshackle little town and down the road, taking the first left. He sped out of sight.
In that time, Cody had finished the second car and was working on the third.
"Pile in!" Chef roared.
"C'mon!" Alejandro yelled, shooting at a zombie as he ran for the car. He yanked open the drivers seat. "Heather, get in!"
Heather vaulted over the nearest car and slid into the backseat, which Gwen was so kindly holding open for her. She clambered in after her. Trent joined Alejandro in the front seat, and Noah and Justin scooted in as well.
"Go! Follow Duncan!" The cook told Alejandro. "At this rate we should all get out okay."
Brick blasted a zombie apart. "C'mon, Cody! Move!"
"I'm going!" Cody yelled, fiddling with the third car. "Chef, at this rate I don't think I'll be able to get all six, probably only one more!"
"That's fine." Chef grumbled. "I was hoping to get them all for storage purposes, but that's okay!"
"We have to move!" Jo screamed, reloading her rifle.
"Get in the car!" Cody screamed right back.
"I'm not leaving with out you, Codykins!" Sierra squealed, shooting at a zombie with her pistol.
A pair of teeth snapped together near Shuie's ear as he ran towards the car. Eva shoulder slammed him out of the way and he hit the dirt, coughing.
"You go last." She growled, hopping into the driver's seat of the car.
"Scoot over." Aidan told her, bending his head down to the driver's seat window.
Eva glared at him. "Why should I?" She yelled.
"Because I don't want you driving with my life in your hands!" Aidan shouted.
"Yeah, neither do I." Bridgette squealed, closing her eyes and shooting blindly at a zombie.
"Nor me." Geoff said, getting into the back seat.
"Yeah, no thanks." Jo scoffed, also getting in the back.
"Fine." Eva screamed. "Just get the fuck in!" She scooted over to the passenger seat and let Aidan take the wheel.
The third car sped away, leaving only Brick, Sierra, Izzy, Cody, Chef and the prisoners behind.
"How long Cody?" Chef yelled again. The zombies were now seriously closing in on the small group.
"Done!" Cody screamed. "Get in! Get the hell in!"
Chef shoved the two prisoners face first into the back and clambered in after them. Cody leapt into the drivers seat with Brick taking the passenger seat. Izzy and Sierra clambered in after them.
"Step on it!" Brick shrieked as a zombie slammed into the windshield.
Cody put his foot on the gas. The zombie groaned in annoyance as it was thrown up over the roof of the car and smashed into it's zombie friend, cracking both arms and shattering an ankle.
Chef sighed in relief, wiping sweat off his face and slumping back in his seat.
"We made it! We made it! Whoopie!" Zekitrov cheered, somehow getting the duct tape off of his mouth.
"Shut up." Chef grumbled, but was too drained to be really mad. He addressed Cody. "You know where to go?"
Cody nodded. "Two lefts then a right."
Chef nodded. "Good, I'm going to catch some shut eye. You!" He addressed Izzy. "Switch spots with me. I don't want my throat getting slit in my sleep. And I trust you enough to keep one of your psycho eyes on them."
Izzy nodded. "Yessy, Cheffy!" She saluted, mocking him playfully.
They switched seats and within five minutes Chef was dozing off to sleep.
"C'mon, where are they?" Duncan asked, panicking.
It was past noon, and Duncan, Courtney, Beth, Harold, James, Lightning and Ezekiel had pulled over at some crummy motel. They had been waiting for about twenty minutes, and there was no sign of anyone. The group was tense.
"It's okay, Duncan." Courtney said soothingly. "I'm sure they'll be here soon enough."
"Yeah," James smirked. "Besides, it probably didn't help that you were going eighty-five like the whole way."
"I was not!" Duncan protested, holding back a grin. "…I went ninety at some points." He mumbled under his breath.
"Sure, whatever." James rolled his eyes. "The point is, we were cruising, so it might take a little longer for everyone to show up."
Ezekiel nodded in agreement. "Can't argue with that logic, eh? No sir-ee."
"Sha-can it, Freakzekiel." Lightning rolled his eyes. "Should we go in and sha-explore the motel?" He addressed Duncan and Courtney.
"Absolutley not, idiot." Harold cut in, irritated. "There could be zombies or bandits crawling all over in there. No, smarter just to stay out here until the entire group gets here."
"Speaking of which." James said, squinting down the road. " I think I see a car."
Sure enough, the other three cars were in sight.
"Thank god." Courtney breathed. "Oh thank god."
The three cars pulled to a stop, and Chef got out of the rear one, rubbing the drowsiness out of his eyes. "This where we're gonna stay?"
Duncan shrugged. "Thought we'd check it out. Seems like a good enough place as any."
"Alright, let's unload and move in." Chef addressed everyone. "While y'all are doing that I'll assemble a search team to check before we all go yodeling inside."
"I'll go." Aidan said, eager to further prove his usefulness.
"How could I say no?" Eva smirked, stepping up with Jo.
"I am your second-hand man after all." Brick saluted, reaching down to his waistline to check his munitions.
"Good." Chef nodded. "Five should be enough. Let's move out, maggots."
The rest of the group nodded
"Hopefully this will just be a cake walk." Jo sighed, loading na extra magazine.
"Psh, me too." Aidan said skeptically. "But when is it ever in these types of situations."
Chef made his usual grumbling noises as they approached the entrance to the slightly crummy motel, named: "Entranceway to Evanessence."
"The name doesn't even make any sort of sense." Brick said, confused.
Jo chuckled. "Could you say that it makes no 'Evanessence.'?" She cracked up.
"Quiet!" Chef hissed. "We don't know what's in there, you big dummy!"
Jo quickly shut up, but the amused twinkle in her eye stayed put.
"I'm glad she's in better spirits." Brick whispered to Aidan, who shrugged.
"Alright," Chef said, "Let's do this." He pushed open the door to the motel…
