Flashback:
"What the hell? What's going on?!" Bridgette squeaked as bullets slammed through the motel.
"I dunno babe, but we gotta get out of here!" Geoff located the nearest window and quickly broke it, ignoring his bloody fist. He gestured for Bridgette to leave. "Hurry! I'll be right behind you!"
Another body skidded into the dark room and crashed into Geoff.
"Ow!"
"Harold?"
"Geoff?
"Who's there?"
"Is that you, Shuie?"
"Quick!" Bridgette whispered through the window, now outside, "Geoff broke a window, get out!"
The sound of bodies clambered through the darkness. Fumbling was heard and then a light clicked on, revealing who was outside the motel.
Bridgette, Geoff, Harold and Shuie, all pale and nervous.
"What do we do?" Bridgette whimpered as a scream pierced the air. Whose it was, she couldn't tell.
"Get into the woods, hide until it blows over." Shuie advised.
"Good idea," Harold agreed, holding the flashlight "let's move."
The four crouched down low and hurried into a tree line.
"Ack!" Shuie stifled a shriek as he was tackled to the ground by someone. A knife was pressed to his throat and everyone froze.
Harold shined his flashlight on the unknown assailant and let out a grin. "Izzy! You scared the crap out of us!"
Izzy, on top of Shuie, quickly removed the knife from his neck and sheathed it on her belt. She rolled off him, and Brick emerged from behind a tree, handgun at the ready.
"What's the report?" The cadet demanded.
"We don't know, we just high-tailed it out of there," Geoff said.
Behind them, deeper into the forest, a twig snapped. Six heads turned to it in a panic.
"Easy!" Called a new voice, "I'm friendly, I'm here to help!"
"Why should we believe you," Shuie hissed into the darkness.
"I'm coming out with my hands up," the voice said calmly, "don't shoot, I'm here to talk and to help."
After a few seconds, a figure stepped out from behind a tree, and Harold quickly shined a flashlight on them.
It was a man, tall and Asian, with a green t-shirt with a "power on" symbol on it. He also had tattered blue jeans. His hair was black and short and he had a nervous smile on his face.
"Easy," he said gently, "look, we don't have a lot of time. Those hillbilly dicks won't let up, we need to get back to our base."
"And why do you think we should trust you?" Shuie spat.
The man clicked his finger and all around them the trees came to life. Six others emerged around them, all armed.
"Because if I wanted you dead, you'd be dead." He said solemnly. "I'm Devin, come with me."
The six looked at each other with varying degrees of suspicion, but ultimately decided to go with Devin.
End Flashback
"Oi, Bridgette!" A girl called, "wait up!"
Bridgette, with a gun at her waist and a basketful of veggies in her arms, turned to see the short blonde running up to her. "Hey Carrie," she smiled, "how was scavenging?"
The girl named Carrie shrugged. She had medium-length blonde hair and a green shirt with light blue jeans. "Not too bad, I guess. We didn't find much supplies, but Devin and I got to hang out alone..." her cheeks turned slightly red and Bridgette giggled impishly.
"Have fun, did you?" The surfer asked as the two walked up to the storehouse. She deposited the vegetables at the front gate and the two turned to walk down the street.
"A little," Carrie grinned. "Anyways, I'm gonna go wash up, later!"
Bridgette waved and continued down the street. She glanced around her surroundings.
Eight foot walls around the entire compound. Shoddy tents and buildings were where the people lived, but construction was going well and accommodations were getting better.
She made her way into a shoddy house, the largest in the compound, and was instantly wrapped in a hug by Geoff.
"Hey babe," Bridgette said into his embrace, smiling. "How was your day."
"Pretty radical," Geoff said as he released her. The party boy looked the same except for a thermal grey shirt he now wore under his pink button up due to the chilly weather. "Helped out with the construction and then dug up some land for the garden expansion. I'm wiped!"
Bridgette looked around their little house. There was no kitchen or appliances, but they had a couple of wooden chairs and a table. Six sleeping bags were rolled up neatly against one wall. There was no bathroom. It was basically just one big room with a table and chairs.
Currently at their table was Shuie and Harold. The two were playing cards.
Shuie had warmed up to their group considerably in the time they had spent at Devin and Carrie's compound. He and Brick especially had become friends, but Brick was out on long-term scavenging duty and hadn't been at the compound for two weeks. Izzy was with him as well, so it was just Bridgette, Geoff, Harold and Shuie at their 'house'.
"Enjoy your day off?" Bridgette asked Shuie as she took a seat at the table.
The older man nodded, his eyes not leaving his cards. "It was great to sleep in for once."
Geoff walked behind Bridgette and began massaging her shoudlers. "We were lucky to find this place."
Harold nodded, scrutinizing his opponent's poker face. "Finding something like this in New Hampshire is amazing. We were lucky Devin, Ryan and the others were on such a far-out scouting mission that night. Super lucky."
Bridgette nodded, sighing in content was her boyfriend continued to knead her shoulders. "You can say that again. I hope Brick and Izzy are doing okay."
"They'll be fine, they can take care of themselves," Shuie assured her. "Besides, they're due back tonight."
"Oh yeah, I had forgotten," Geoff exclaimed, a smile on his face. "It'll be good to see those dudes again, that's for sure."
Later on, it was dinner-time for the fourty or so people staying at the compound. The walls of the compound had been built by three incredibly smart women named Ellody, Scarlett, and Mary. Unfortunately Mary had died sometime after the walls had been built of a leg that had gotten infected, but Ellody acted as the leader of the group along with Devin after a disagreement between Ellody and Scarlett had the latter leave the group.
Other members of note included Emma and Kitty, beautiful, young, Asian sisters who knew how to kick some serious ass, Beardo, a talented beat-boxer and voice thrower that was invaluable on scavenging missions, Carrie, Devin's boyfriend, Ryan, a monster of a man with a gentle soul, and Rock, an enthusiastic but useless music lover.
Currently everyone was eating around a large bonfire. The air was chilly and the temperature was gradually decreasing as winter drew closer. It was November and already they had woken up to frost on the ground. The urgency to finish and properly insulate the buildings was ever-increasing, and some of the sharper minds were starting to doubt it they would even survive the weather when winter finally hit.
The atmosphere was pleasant and idle chatter punctured the air as they ate fresh vegetables and canned meat. Bridgette had long ago given up her vegetarian diet.
Their peaceful meal was broken by a shout from outside the walls.
"Let us in!"
The sound of a gate opening was heard and three people staggered into the firelight.
Izzy, pale and exhausted, she was covered in blood but seemed unharmed.
Beardo, sporting a bloodied bandage over his eye and a missing hand.
Rock, unharmed and in shock.
"What happened?" Ellody piped up, her short brown hair around her face and her nerdy glasses falling down her nose.
"A herd," Izzy said quietly, "they're on us, they'll be here soon. We're..." her voice caught, "we're all that's left."
Bridgette put a hand over her mouth and tears started to pool in her eyes. "Brick..."
"Ryan too?" Carrie asked, trembling.
Izzy could only nod her head.
Panicked voices were now erupting throughout the compound.
"A herd?"
"Will the walls hold?"
"What do we do?"
Ellody clapped her hands loudly and got everyones attention. "Listen up people!" She barked, "the walls have us protected in a complete 360. With enough force, yes, they would break through, but they won't unless they figure out we're in here. If we extinguish all the lights and keep quiet, they should just breeze right by us. No need to panic, we'll be fine!"
This calmed everyone down, and they nodded.
Bridgette, Geoff, Harold and Shuie had all ran to comfort Izzy, who still seemed in shock.
"I tried to carry him," she whispered into her bloodied hands, her normally spunky demeanor totally absent, "but he slipped out."
"Sssh, there's nothing you could've done," Bridgette whispered as she embraced the girls, tears falling from her face. "It's okay."
"What about you?" Shuie called across the fire to Beardo, "you bit?"
The black man shook his head. "Fuckers got two of my fingers but I chopped off my hand seconds after. I'll be fine. The eye was some bandits we ran into."
"Jeeze, must've been an awful scout mission," Devin said hollowly as Carrie wrapped herself around him.
"Sssh," Ellody demanded, "Everyone get to bed, just sleep through the herd, we'll be fine."
Everyone quickly scarfed down their remaining food and all but ran to their tents or houses. They settled in and waited. Sure enough, within a couple hours moans could be heard on a colossal scale. Most everyone was asleep, but the smart ones had stayed awake, alert.
Thanks to Shuie's persistance, he had suggested the pack up all their stuff, just in case.
Good thing too, because as the moans grew louder, the walls stared to take on some weight.
First one sighed cracked and fell. The another. Then another.
And then they were in. The dead were coming, and everyone was pinned in.
