Chapter 32

Age 30

2022

2 days later (Friday)

Casper rubbed a hand over his face as he sat up. It wasn't often he slept in past his wife, almost never in fact. He checked his phone for the time and found it way too early for his wife to have woken up before her alarm. The sound of retching coming from the bathroom confirmed something was wrong. Gabby had just started to calm down when Vivica announced to the club she was leaving. Gabby had been a mess ever since. He jumped out of bed and stopped in the still open door of the ensuit. Gabby was pushing herself up off her knees and flushed the toilet.

"You okay love?" He asked stupidly. She simply shrugged as she stumbled to the sink and brushed her teeth. "Maybe you should call off, go back to bed." He suggested, rubbing her back lightly as she wiped her mouth with a towel.

"No…I feel better now." She turned to face him and leaned against the counter.

"Okay." He stroked her face and kissed her forehead, she didn't feel hot at all. "But get some more sleep. You don't have to be up for over an hour. I'll get the kids ready for daycare."

Gabby shrugged again. "I won't fall back asleep. I might as well get stuff done. But you better deal with the kids; I don't want to get them sick."

"Okay." He stroked her arm and froze a minute as he looked her over. "Gabby, did you sleep in your bra last night?"

"Yeah." Gabby fixed her bra strap that Casper had pulled on. "They hurt."

She started out of the bathroom and Casper held on to her arm gently, to stop her.

"Umm, Love…when's the last time you got your period?"

Gabby rolled her eyes. "Don't get all worked up. You don't just wake up overnight pregnant and puking. Morning sickness doesn't hit till at least a month in."

"I realize that. But you've been nauseous for a while now, your breasts hurt, and, not trying to start a fight or anything, but you've been a little emotional."

Gabby huffed. "I'm due for my period any day now, which means I'm not late. My breasts hurt because I'm pmsing which is also probably why I'm 'emotional'." Gabby emphasized emotional with air quotes. "And the nausea I'm gonna blame on stress."

Casper nodded and moved out of the way of his currently not on birth control and pmsing wife. "Wait." He walked back up to her. "You should be getting your period any day now?"

"Yes." Gabby answered annoyed and grabbed her robe.

"That doesn't sound right."

"Well my phone says it is."

"That's wrong." Casper said firmly.

"You put the app on my phone."

"But that would put your last period at 4 weeks ago. 4 weeks ago was Chris's funeral, you were definitely not on your period for Chris's funeral.

"Casper!" Gabby snapped. "We both thought I was pregnant last month. I bought the test on my way to work. When I went to take it I was spotting. I told you that! I threw the test away. I was upset, you were upset. How could you forget that?"

"I didn't, but you were just spotting. That was the day Kristen was sick, and Happy was over. The morning after that I got the call about Chris, we jumped out of bed and went to the clubhouse. And then it was the funeral and all the guys in town. Gabby, you weren't on your period. Think about it. I distinctly remember you and I having very good sex during all that, and there was definitely no blood."

"I was spotting…I always spot the day before my period."

"You spotted during the first trimester of all your pregnancies."

"Oh my God." Gabby covered her mouth, horrified.

"Gabby…" Casper laughed.

"No."

"What?" Casper stopped laughing immediately.

"I can't be pregnant, this can't be happening, not now."

"Not now? Gabby we wanted this. Aren't you happy? I mean…"

"I…yes...no…I…no. Not now, not with Vivica leaving and Chris dead and Lenard in prison, and a prospect living in our house because somebody might try to kill us! No, no not now!" Gabby sat down on the bed.

"Gabby, Love," Casper knelt down in front of her and took her hands. "We're gonna have a baby. It's crazy now, I know, but this baby is gonna take a long time to show up, and I promise you, I'm gonna do everything in my power to make things okay again before this baby gets here."

"We're gonna have a baby." Gabby's face changed from horror to shock.

"We're gonna have a baby." Casper smiled and kissed her hands.

"We're gonna have a baby." Gabby smiled.

"What the hell are you doing here?" Frankie asked Tony as soon as he stepped into the clubhouse.

"Gabby took the kids to daycare. I'm gonna meet her at the house at 3 so she can shop for Viv's party." Tony defended himself.

"Good for you. Why are you HERE? I need bodies at the garage. You still want a paycheck? I still want to make money. Get your ass over there!" Frankie yelled.

"Yes! Yes Sir!" Tony stumbled back out of the clubhouse.

"Not gonna get to do that much longer." Casper reminded him from the doorway.

"Taking every advantage I can." Frankie nodded.

Casper shook his head and walked over to his tech corner.

"Spill it." Shark sat down on the corner of his desk.

"Spill what?" Casper asked.

"Spill what put that big ass smile on your face." Shark teased.

Casper tried his best to make his face serious. He spotted Happy walking through the door. "For the last time Shark, I'm not telling you about mine and Gabby's sex life!" He shouted and quickly stood up, storming off to the kitchen.

Happy froze and stared down Shark. "I wasn't…I didn't…I don't…" Shark stuttered. Happy didn't move an inch. "I'm gonna go to the garage, Frankie said he needs help there today."

Happy stayed silent as Shark gave him as wide a berth as possible on his way to the door.

"You make that shit look fun Hap." Frankie laughed and held up his coffee mug in a toast.

"We got anything?"

"Nodda. No word, no more leads. Putting the men back to work, except Casper, poor boy's fingers are gonna catch fire with all the hacking he's been doing."

Happy nodded. "Where's Vin?"

"Took Tom Tom and Bull out early, that deadline for the complex on Cedar is coming up on us fast."

"Hey you!" Shark threw an empty grocery bag at Gabby's back in the clubhouse kitchen. "Where are the kids?"

"Still at home with Tony, I didn't see any reason to keep them entertained here while I cook." Gabby answered, continuing to peel potatoes. "You wanna help?" She held up a potato.

"Walked myself right into that one didn't I?" Shark shook his head and grabbed a potato. "What's on the menu?"

"Salad, steak, green beans, mashed potatoes, rolls, and cheesecake."

"Ohhhh homemade cheesecake?" Shark got excited.

"Store bought, in Vivica's honor."

"Nice." Shark laughed. Gabby handed over her peeler and went to the fridge. She grabbed out the first large pack of steaks to start putting the dry rub on. She gaged at the sheen of blood on the butcher paper as she peeled it off and threw it away. Shark caught the reaction out of the corner of his eye.

"You okay over there?" He asked, tossing the potato and peeler in the sink. "Hey, hey, now." He grabbed her hair as she bent over the trash can.

"I'm okay." She pushed him away after a minute and stood up, the nausea passing. "I'm good." She looked at Shark's face and saw the wheels turning. "I don't know if I can make it through this dinner without crying. I've just had this knot in my stomach since she told me."

"Yeah, this place just won't be Fresno without Viv here." He looked her up and down and eyed the steaks behind her. "You take the potatoes, I got the steaks. I suck at peeling." He added and pushed Gabby over to the sink. "And you suck at grilling."

Gabby laughed, "Touché."

"Hey." Casper knocked on the door jam.

"Hey you." Gabby gave him a huge grin.

"Can we talk a second?" He asked.

"Yeah, sure." She wiped her hands on a towel and let Casper lead her into the store room.

"So?" He asked immediately upon closing the door.

"The doctor can't fit me in till Monday." Gabby faked disappointment. Casper's face fell drastically. "But I couldn't wait that long so I had the lab at the clinic do a blood test on me."

"AND?" Casper demanded.

Gabby laughed. "And somebody knocked me up."

"Oh god." Casper sighed in relief and hugged Gabby tight. "I love you so much Gabby."

"I love you too."

"Hold up a second." Shark snuck up on Casper. "Hey sweetie, go find Grandpa okay? He'll get you a good seat." Shark leaned down and sent Kristen away. He stood back up to face Casper. "I've got a bone to pick with you."

"Dinner's starting Shark." Casper answered, annoyed.

"How could you not tell me? Everything that's gone on over the past few weeks, her leaving! You knew then, didn't you, that's why you were really so scared. Everything I did, all the worrying, and you didn't tell me!" Shark yelled in a loud whisper.

"Jesus, tell you what?" Casper asked.

"That's Gabby's preg-" Casper covered Shark's mouth and pushed him around the corner back into the kitchen.

"No. No Shark."

"Yes! Yes, because I saw her gag at the steaks, and Gabby likes steak, the only time Gabby doesn't like steak is when she's preg-" Casper covered his mouth again.

"Okay." Casper kept his hand on Shark's mouth. "Okay, she is. We just and I mean Just found out. No one knows. No One. Not even Happy. If Happy finds out from anyone besides Gabby that she is…she will have a fit. So just don't say anything." He slowly took his hand away.

"She is? And I know first? I figured out myself, she can't be mad! She is. Oh…oh baby. Baby. Baby!" Shark hugged Casper fiercely.

"This is coming off as really creepy man." Casper patted Shark on the back a few times. "I know you're happy, there's gonna be a baby, but seriously, back off."

"Sorry. Okay, I really can't say anything?"

"Nothing."

"But…do you have any idea what it's gonna take for me to keep this secret? I can't, you gotta…give me something, the name; I want to name the baby. Let me name the baby and I will keep this secret till Gabby can't see her feet anymore. I promise."

"No. Now come on." Casper walked into the bar area and sat next to Gabby. He kissed his wife's head and whispered in her ear. "Shark knows, he guessed."

"Fucking steaks." Gabby murmured under her breath and watched Shark sit down across from her with a big smile on his face. She glared back.

The chaos of dinner commenced along with a few toasts and stories of Vivica as a young woman and biker chic before becoming more refined. Even a story of Chris accidentally punching Vivica's twin sister's boyfriend when he rode past a park and saw them making out.

Shark continued to stare down Casper and Gabby from across the table. "I have a toast to make." Shark suddenly stood up, staring directly across the table at his favorite couple. Gabby went pale, Casper gripped his steak knife.

"Vivica, we love you." Shark turned to the head of the table. "You have been like a mother to each and every one of us. Part of me can't help but wonder if you would be staying with us now if you had a son in a patch around this table."

Gabby and Casper relaxed a bit.

"I can just imagine Chris grooming his son to be a member of this club, and I guess I can imagine that because he, and you Vivica, have really helped to raise all of us, groom us, support us in our time of need. I can't help but feel that we have failed you in that regard, maybe, if we had been there for you a bit more, you would be staying with us now. Staying to raise and support yet another generation of patches to this club that is so near and dear to your heart."

"Shark." Casper growled.

"You will be missing out on the future of this club that you worked so hard to raise from the ground up."

"SHARK." Casper growled louder. Shark smiled and addressed the rest of the table.

"But, as the old saying goes, when one door closes another one opens. And that is true in many ways here tonight. Vivica is leaving us, but she will be on the ocean, with her sister. A new chapter of her life is starting. And the same is true here.

"Shark." Gabby said, loud enough for the people immediately around her to hear.

"We are losing someone dear to our hearts, and Vivica your loss will be felt by all of us, there will be a permanent hole. But, life moves on, and I am confident that someone, somehow, in some way, will come into our lives soon. That person will in no way fill the Vivica shaped hole in our hearts, but will fill a different part of it, that will make us feel just a little less empty."

"Cameron!" Gabby yelled, finally getting his attention.

"So, to sum up, you will be missed." Shark quickly sat down and stared at Gabby.

"Well, thank you, I think." Vivica raised her glass to him, prompting the rest of the table to do the same.

"Who's ready for dessert?" Gabby asked standing up.

"I'll help." Becky started to get up.

"No, Shark will help me." Gabby shot her down and walked off to the kitchen. Shark nodded at the table and got up to follow her.

"You gonna go look in to that?" Vin asked Casper.

"Hell no, she ain't mad at me." Casper brushed the question off and gave his plate to the sweet butt behind him.

"What the fuck was that?" Gabby asked as soon as Shark got in the kitchen.

"I know."

"I know you know. You don't get to tell anyone else!" Gabby snapped.

"I want to name the baby. And hey! BABY! Congrats!" Shark bounced on his heels and went in for a hug. Gabby backed up and blocked him with her hand.

"You want to name my baby?" Gabby asked.

"Yes. Let me name your baby and I won't tell anyone." Shark clapped his hands together.

"No." Gabby snapped in awe of his audacity.

"Okay." Shark started out the kitchen. "I have one more thing to add." He called to the table in the bar.

Gabby grabbed him and hauled him back into the kitchen, slamming him against the counter and making the group at the table look around in suspicion.

"You can't name my baby."

"Then I'm telling them."

"No, you can't. Come on, ask for something else."

"I want to name the baby."

"That's not gonna happen."

"Fine, I get to announce it. To everyone, and I get to pick the middle name, and I get to be a part of picking the first name."

"No way. You get to pick the middle name from a list of 3 choices I give you."

"I pick the middle name and pick from a list you give me for the first name and I get to tell everyone."

"You tell everyone, when I tell you, no sooner, and you get to pick the middle name."

"You're gonna tell Happy before you let me tell everyone else?"

"Of course!"

"Then no deal, you tell Happy, I tell everyone else, I pick the middle name and give you a list for the first name to pick from."

"You do realize I can make any deal with you I want to on naming this baby and then put whatever the hell I want on the birth certificate." Gabby reminded him.

Shark rethought his approach. "You tell Happy, I tell everyone else, I get to pick the middle name and I get 3 veto's on the first name."

"Deal." Gabby held out her hand.

"Deal." Shark agreed and shook her hand.

Gabby shoved dessert plates and forks at Shark and grabbed the cake, rushing out of the kitchen.

"Who wants cheesecake?" She asked, holding it up above her head, smiling like nothing happened.
