Chapter 33

Age 30

2022

1 week later

Kristen's birthday party.

"Hey Becky, Suzie, Tom Tom." Gabby greeted the newcomers. "All the kids are in the back yard, there are games and Shark has the sprinkler going."

"Okay!" Suzie squealed and turned for the door.

"And take that outside, there's a big table with balloons on it for all the gifts." Gabby pointed to the large wrapped box Tom Tom was carrying.

"Don't get completely soaked, I didn't bring a change of clothes." Becky called after the young girl.

"I'll go out with her." Tom Tom comforted Becky, laying a hand on her back for a moment.

"Thanks Tom." Becky called as he walked off.

"Tom?" Gabby asked, smiling.

"Yeah, I'm trying it out, what?"

"Tom Tom…" Gabby led her on.

"I see no reason to say it twice, why can't I just call him Tom." Becky defended herself.

"Because his name's not Tom." Gabby explained.

"What? Seriously? Everyone calls him Tom."

"Tom Tom." Gabby corrected Becky again.

"Well if his name's not Tom where the hell does Tom Tom come from?"

"I don't actually know, maybe from that old GPS thing, I know he doesn't have the best sense of direction." Gabby shrugged.

"Well, what the hell is his name?" Becky asked.

Gabby smiled wider than she had in weeks. "You're dating him and you don't know his real name?"

"Gabby just tell me!" Becky sounded embarrassed.

"Oh…I ah…I don't think that's my place." Gabby shook her head and bit her lip to keep from laughing.

"What's so funny?" Happy walked into the kitchen, automatically kissing his daughter on the head in greeting.

"Becky and I were just talking about names. Real names, birth names, of the guys."

"Tom Tom's birth name, in particular, although, I wouldn't mind knowing yours too." Becky tried to bribe Happy.

"My name's Happy." He dead panned.

"No I mean…"

"His name is Happy." Gabby backed up her dad. "And I have a feeling no kid ever dared make fun of him for that in school."

"Not one. Ever." Happy nodded his head.

"Your name is Happy. Your legal name is Happy. Okay, and Shark's real name is Cameron, which I just learned last week when Gabby scolded him like a 5 year old. And Tom Tom's real name is…?"

Happy smiled. "Better than mine." He turned to Gabby. "Where are the kids?"

"You know, I don't think you love me anymore, I think you just use me for your grandkids." Gabby teased him.

"Not true sweet heart. I also use you for food."

"Then you'll love dinner." Gabby smiled.

Happy surveyed the kitchen. "Pasta salad and fruit…" He picked up a stick…"Kabobs?"

"Kid food." Gabby grabbed the fruit back. "Veggies and dip, fruit in fun shapes, pasta salad, potato salad…"

Happy looked Gabby over carefully, surveying both her and the kitchen. "Will there be meat?" He asked carefully.

Gabby huffed. "Vin is grilling hotdogs outside."

"Good. Need any help?"

"I've got 15 six year olds in the backyard." Gabby smiled.

"Right." Happy grabbed a carrot off a platter and left the kitchen.

"So." Becky got her friends attention again. "What's Casper's real name?"

"James." Gabby said offhandedly.

"And Tom Tom's?" Becky tried to catch her off guard.

"So so so much better than Happy." Gabby smirked.

"Fake tattoos. 15 six year old girls and they are going gaga for fake tattoo. Not face painting, not cute fuzzy animals, not arts and crafts, fake tattoos." Becky stared at the birthday party going on in the back yard.

"With Crayola markers. Not even store bought, stick on, glittery, girly tattoos." Gabby added, waiting for Becky to open the door for her so she could carry out more food.

"I just don't get it. I mean, your kids, my kid, okay, they aren't the norm, but her whole class, all of them, they love it."

"It's new and different. Kristen went to 9 birthdays parties this school year, all of them had the same themes, played the same games, gave away the same favors, this party is different."

"I guess." Becky moved the plates on the table around so Gabby could set down what she was carrying. "It's too bad Viv wouldn't stay one more week for this."

"She gave Kristen her gift before she left. I wish she would have come back up here for it, she said she'd be back for birthdays and holidays, but I get it, it's only been a week, she's still unpacking."

"Is Tig coming?" Becky asked casually.

"He said he was gonna try, but Charming was up in Rouge River for the weekend. He's gonna get himself in trouble trying to come down here all the time."

"He could transfer." Becky shrugged, following Gabby back in the house.

"He could." Gabby said hesitantly. "But he won't. I mean, Charming would have to vote him out, and then Fresno would have to vote him in. And I mean, Tig is Charming. Charming is Tig. You know what I mean? I can't imagine he'd ever leave."

"Dogs are done!" Vin yelled through the window.

"Come on, let's feed some kids."

"Isn't that what the prospects are for?" Becky asked.

Gabby laughed. "Good girl! You're learning!"

"Did you enjoy your party sweetie?" Gabby asked as she tucked her daughter in.

"Yes, I liked it all. All the games and all the presents and all my friends coming over." Kristen rambled, still hopped up on sugar.

"Oh really?" Gabby smiled. "What was your favorite game?"

"The guess the candy game!"

"The guess the candy game? Really? The game where you get to eat candy?" Gabby teased.

"Yes! And the chalk drawing, and the treasure hunt."

"Well good." Gabby kissed her daughters forehead and said a silent prayer that the chalk would wash off the fence posts as easily as she had promised her husband it would.

"Do I really have to go to bed? I can't sleep!"

"You haven't even tried yet silly goose. And yes, you do. It's an hour past your bed time. You stayed up long enough. Daddy's gonna come in and read you a story though, so you can stay up a little bit longer." Gabby stood up and turned on the light on the night stand.

"Good night mommy."

"Good night sweetie." Gabby shut off the overhead light as she left the room and smiled at Casper in the hallway. "Pick a long book." She whispered and kissed him on the cheek.

"Hey dad. You don't have to do that." Gabby chastised him as soon as she got down the stairs.

"I don't mind. She still wide awake up there?" Happy continued to take the banner off the wall.

"Yup. I expected as much. As long as she doesn't wake up Mathew I don't mind. Not like she has school tomorrow."

"Yeah…" Happy turned around and leaned against the wall. "You ever think about taking off the summer with the kids? Not stick them in daycare for their summer break?"

"No." Gabby took the banner from Happy and he followed her into the kitchen. "I only work till 3, and you boys end up taking them a few days a week anyway. Besides, it helps to keep the kids on a schedule, Kristen won't forget as much as the other kids over the summer, and it fills their days. What would I do with them home all day? We'd all be bored in a week."

"I just think it would be nice for them. You know. Run free and all that."

"Run free?" Gabby laughed. "They're 6 and 2, what are they gonna do?"

"Sleep in, play, I don't know what kids do." Happy shrugged. "Maybe you could just cut down on your hours."

"I'm already working part time." Gabby folded the banner neatly and set it on the counter. "You think now that Vivica is gone I should quit my job and do what she did."

"I think you are going to try to fill her shoes, and raise these kids, and work, and you're gonna feel like a failure when you can't do it all, even though she had no kids and no job and had you to help her."

"You know, I don't work to pay the bills. The money I make helps, a lot, don't get me wrong. But it's a crappy paying job. After the family health insurance plan and the 529 for the kids' college account I don't make a whole hell of a lot now that I'm part time. I mean hell, if the daycare wasn't free I probably would be better off staying home. Dad, I love my job. I help kids. I help them survive the hell they're living in, and hopefully I'm helping them to aspire for more and break out of the cycle their parents are in. I want to go to work. I love my kids, I love the club, but I love my job."

"What about after the baby is born?" Happy asked.

"Baby?"

"Baby."

"Okay…before I actually acknowledge that, I need to know, and this is very important, did Shark say something to you?"

"Why didn't you tell me?" Happy asked.

"No seriously, it's very important. Did Shark say something?"

Happy chuckled. "No."

"Then yes I am. I didn't tell you yet because it's early. But I would have. Jesus, I gave up my baby's middle name so I could be the one to tell you."

"How's Shark know?"

"How'd you know?"

"You're my daughter."

Gabby smiled. "Well he didn't figure out that way, but something close, probably."

"Congratulations sweet heart." He hugged Gabby tightly and kissed the top of her head.

"Thanks dad." She hugged him back tightly and pulled away. "Please don't tell anyone else, it's early, and I don't want to jinx it. And I mean, Viv just left, and with Lenard in jail…"

"The guys could use some good news."

"I know, but not yet, once things are better. Once Tony isn't following me around and all that."

"Speaking of the prospect, does he know?"

"No, why?"

"Cause he's living in your house Gabs."

"Ehh, he's a guy. Never lived with a woman, no kids, guy's oblivious."

"Till you start to show."

"I'll tell people by then dad. I promise. Hey, want to do me a favor?"

"Always."

"Go out and make sure that chalk is gonna come off the fence."

Happy smiled. "And if it doesn't?"

"Buy paint?"

"She's out." Becky walked back into the living room and sat down next to Tom Tom.

"How out?" Tom Tom asked, rubbing his hand up Becky's leg, from knee to thigh.

"Very out." Becky smiled and parted her lips as Tom Tom gently kissed her.

Kissing turned to groping as it always did these days and Becky suddenly found herself pinned to the couch by her new boyfriend, his deliciously calloused hands up her shirt, undoing her bra. He pushed it out of his way and cupped her breasts, smiling against her lips as her nipples quickly perked at his touch. He sat up, pulling her with him, freeing her from his grasp without letting go. His way of letting her know she had a choice in the matter. She straddled him and pushed her own hands up his shirt. He groaned at her nails on his skin and slipped his hands down her jeans, cupping her ass. Becky froze for just a moment, Tom Tom had yet to cross her waistline and it took her by surprise. Tom Tom immediately noticed and pulled his mouth away from hers, leaving his hands in place.

"We don't have to, I just want more of you."

"I know, I want more too. Something's just been bothering me all day." Tom Tom pulled away further and slipped his hands out of her pants, holding her hips instead. "It's silly, I just realized today…I don't know your real name. We're dating, and I am very very ready to get extremely physical here, but…I really need to know your name."

Tom Tom slid Becky off his lap and stood up. "You know, I really don't want to do this too fast."

Becky looked at him funny, "meaning sex or telling me your name?"

"I'm gonna go." He bent down and gave her a quick peck on the lips. "I'll call you tomorrow."

"Tom Tom, I…"

"Night Becky." He said quickly and let himself out.

"Seriously?" Becky asked the empty room, still sitting on her couch.
