After considering all the dragons and their rider's strength, I finally decided who I wanted to ride with first.
"Fishlegs." I said smiling and walking over to him and Meatlug. "I think I'm gonna go with him and Meatlug for the day."
Hiccup walked over to us and nodded his head while patting Meatlug on the head. "Alright Enya, if that's who you pick. Fishlegs, you're out for the day. Everyone else-"
"Wait," Tuffnut interrupted before walking over to us. "Meatlug? You're picking the slowest dragon out of all of them?"
"Yeah," I replied "Meatlug may be slow, no offense Fishlegs." I added, patting Fishlegs on the shoulder. "None taken." He said happily before giving Meatlug a hug. "But," I continued "She's also low to the ground so if I fall it won't be as big of a drop and Fishlegs has endless amounts of dragon knowledge so what better way to start my training than with someone with both dragon and flying expertise?"
Tuff glared at me before looking over at Fishlegs and Meatlug. "Don't worry Tuffnut," I smiled before giving him a slight punch to his shoulder. "We won't be training long, you and your sister won't miss dinner." He mumbled something under his breath before walking back over to his dragon and sitting in the saddle.
"Alright Fishlegs," Hiccup said standing beside me "Come back here when you're done training. Let me know how everything goes, how many times Enya gets mad, anything you think is important."
I rolled my eyes and climbed up behind the saddle. "That's Hiccup talk for 'If she loses any limbs let me know." I chuckled before helping Fishlegs climb into the saddle. Soon we were off the ground and flying out the academy.
I kept my eyes focused on Fishleg's back the whole time while he talked about different dragons and their stats. Just like I expected he never went far off the ground so I took this as an opportunity to focus on keeping my head straight and my eyes opened without the queasy returning. I also decided to look from side to side occasionally since I knew that would also be one of the main lessons I would have to learn before I could truly begin flying. I started mulling over everything I would be expected to know and preparing myself mentally for what I was already expected to know. I had a feeling even though Fishlegs was probably going to be the easiest teacher skill wise, but knowledge wise he was probably going to expect a lot since that's one of the first things we learned when we were still at war with the dragons. I also-
"Enya?" I heard Fishlegs say before snapping me out of my thoughts.
"Wha-" I muttered before looking around and noticing we were back on the ground in the forest.
"Which dragon do you think you'd want after your training?" Fishlegs replied before getting off the saddle and adjusting it to fit me. "Personally, I think you could use a Nadder. Quick on their feet, fast wit. Or potentially a Monstrous Nightmare. Powerful, hard-headed at-" Fishlegs quickly stopped himself when he saw the look I was giving him. "Never mind, never mind…" I just laughed and began looking around the area. "Honestly Fishlegs, I'd want a Skrill." I smiled.
This answer seemed to shock Fishlegs, giving him the most confused look on his face. "A Skrill?" I nodded my head and walked back over to him. "Of course, besides a Nightfury, the Skrill is the only dragon in the strike class so why not have the same class as my brother? And Skrills are powerful dragons that are-" "Impossible to ride." Fishlegs finished. "Their whole bodies are nothing but lightning, Enya and impossible to train."
I raised an eyebrow and shrugged my shoulders. "They said that about all dragons, now look at Hiccup." Fishlegs tried to think of a rebuttal, but instead all he could say was "Good point."
After observing our surroundings to ensure so wild dragons were around, I climbed up on Meatlug and strapped myself in. "Alright Enya, first things first, navigating. Fly Meatlug around the forest in a circle, dodging anything in the way while still trying to make a nearly perfect circle. I'll be here to give you a center. When I think you're done I'll give a whistle and Meatlug will fly you back here" I nodded my head before slightly pulling on Meatlug's saddle to begin flying. I started in the outer circle first before slowly flying farther and farther away from Fishlegs while dodging the trees and rocks around me. Eventually I heard a distant whistle and Meatlug quickly changed course and flew right back to the center, knocking Fishlegs over in excitement and licking him. I couldn't help but smile, seeing the bond he has with his dragon and the love his dragon has for him.
After regaining his footing, Fishlegs patted Meatlug on the back and looked up at me. "Not bad, good coordination, did good dodging, could have gone a little higher but I understand wanting to keep an eye on your center. Now to work go back around and go farther out. This time you find your way back on your own."
After a few more hours of training consisting of basic flying techniques and navigating, we flew back to the academy where the others were waiting on us.
"Glad to see you made it back in one piece" Hiccup said before giving me a hug. "How did it go?"
"Good flying technique, natural dodger, overall good form." Fishlegs replied as he climbed down off Meatlug.
"I guess flying naturally runs in the family." I laughed, smiling at Hiccup.
"Tell that to Barf and Belch." I heard Snotlout say.
"Alright everyone," Hiccup said, ignoring Snotlout's comment "Lets head home, we all have another day of training tomorrow. Some more than others." I rolled my eyes before climbing behind Hiccup and heading back to our house.
"So, who do you think you'll be training with tomorrow?" Hiccup asked after landing in front of our house.
"I don't know yet." I replied "Maybe Astrid or Snotlout. Maybe Ruff after a couple days. When do you want to take me out flying?"
"Once you get more experience under your belt. Plus I'd have to adjust Toothless's stirrups so you can adjust his tail. And I think someone missed you today Enya." Hiccup smiled at me.
I raised my eyebrows and crossed my arms. "Who?"
"Lets just say someone wasn't his usual dumb, joke-cracking self today."
"Why would Snotlout miss me?" I asked
"No, not Snotlout." Hiccup laughed again, beginning to climb up the stairs.
I stayed at the bottom of the steps, looking up at him. I could tell he knew I was lost as to what he meant so he walked back downstairs and kept smiling at me. "Tuffnut."
I felt my eyes go big and my heart skipped a beat. "What do you mean he missed me?"
"He just didn't have as much energy as he usually does. No remarks, no jokes, surprisingly he did for the most part what I told him today."
I shrugged my shoulders and began walking up the stairs to bed. "He's probably still mad about the fact he actually had to work after he burned down that boat you and dad were repairing."
"If that was the case then Ruff would be acting the same way. She seemed fine." Hiccup replied, sitting down on his bed and continuing to smile at me. I rolled my eyes and threw my boot at him, which was quickly caught by Toothless and returned to me before his tail caught Hiccup in the chest, knocking him off his bed. "Good job bud." I smiled, patting him on the head. "And good night, Hiccup."
Hiccup mumbled something under his breath before extinguishing the flame in the lamp and going to sleep himself. I couldn't help but think over what he said before I fell asleep. I couldn't think of a reason why Tuff would even miss me. "Probably missed annoying me." I thought.
