I kept running even after I heard Hiccup and many others yelling at me, a lot of which I don't know if I just made up in my head or if they were real. What I do know is even if those voices weren't real, the voice telling me to keep running was and that's the one I obeyed. Even when I reached the hill to my house, I felt Loki enjoying my mental torment and I only seemed to run faster up the hill despite its height.
I slammed the door behind me before finally collapsing and realizing just how out of breath I was. It somehow felt like I couldn't breathe at all and I was taking in too much air at the same time. I let out a few coughs and took a few more beaths before I felt my lungs slowly go back to normal.
"This is ridiculous!" I thought in between breaths. "I've fought dragons, I fought the Red Death, I've dealt with Dagur, and I'm suddenly scared of my dad?!" After letting out a few coughs I got back on my feet and began pacing around the table. "Besides, how do I know he was even coming to my table?" I said out loud. "He could have been lea-"
"Dad, what's going on?" I heard the muffled sound of my brother's voice outside the door. I looked over at the doorframe and saw shadows moving outside it and suddenly felt the adrenaline come back into my body. "Backdoor!" was my first thought. However, my mind and my hands were thinking two different things. What I knew and recognized as a small closet, my hand suddenly decided it was now the backdoor and my legs followed suit. This was how I found myself smushed into a small, dark l closet surrounded by mine, Hiccup's, and our dad's winter furs. I pushed them away from me so I wouldn't die from the heat before I heard the front door open and close.
"So, Enya and Tuff huh?" I heard Hiccup speak first. "Can't say I saw that one coming." I pushed my ear to the crack in the door and listened to the conversation outside.
"Enya!" Stoick yelled, ignoring Hiccup as I heard the creak and groan of the stairs.
"If it makes you feel better dad, she could do worse." Hiccup spoke up again. I couldn't help but roll my eyes at this comment. "And yet if I said the same about Astrid…" I thought.
"It would make me feel better if she did better." I heard dad say before hearing his chair screech across the floor. "She can't stay out all night. If she does Tuffnut will be getting a visit from me in the middle of the night."
"Well from Tuff's look after she ran out I doubt you'll find her there either." Hiccup said. This caused my heart to sink when I remembered the flowers Tuff had in his hand. "Probably won't be getting those any time soon." I thought as the guilt began to sink in.
"I'm going to the forest, ask the builders if they've seen her." Stoick said before I felt his chair creek again.
"I'll go to the dragon academy, see if she got a ride there." Hiccup said. I heard the door open and close with a loud slam. I waited a few moments to make sure I didn't hear any movement before slowly emerging from the closet and walking back toward the door. "At least-"
"Something told me you didn't go far." I immediately went to grab my dagger from my boot before I felt two hands on my elbows and a loud "Whoa!" stopping me from pulling my weapon out.
"Hiccup!" I yelled, scrunching my eyebrows together. "You should know not to do that!"
"I know, I know." Hiccup said, letting go of me and taking a few steps back.
"Thought you were going to the dragon academy?"
"Thought you were just taking flying lessons from Tuffnut." Hiccup said with a smile.
I felt my face heat up and couldn't help but bury my face in my hands. "Dad's mad." I mumbled. "I heard your conversation from the closet."
"Well he's not happy," Hiccup agreed. "But you know dad. He'll be mad because he doesn't understand, you get told you're not his son, but once you fight a dragon and lose a limb or two, he'll come around."
"Does my head count as a limb? I feel like I'm already losing that." I sat down in dad's chair and propped my feet up on the table. "I did plan to just go flying with Tuffnut. That's all I wanted."
"So, how'd you go from flying to locked in his loving embrace?" Hiccup asked, pulling up a chair beside me.
"Hiccup!" I yelled giving him a strong shove, even though I felt a slight smirk come on my face.
"I'm just sharing what dad said." Hiccup laughed and I rolled my eyes. I shook my head before crossing my arms and looking over into the pit we cook our food. "It started with Tuff being an idiot." I began. I told Hiccup about everything Tuff did and his flying before we landed, and I had my outburst. Then I told him what was said between Tuff and I, how I realized how much I did like him, and how everything Tuffnut did that I thought was annoying I secretly began to like. "And then when we landed back here, I don't know what went through my head, but I wasn't ready for him to go just then, so I kissed him…then he ran away when dad opened the door."
There was silence between Hiccup and I when I finished, which I was appreciative of because I didn't want to answer any questions from him just them. All he did was nod his head and smirk a little. "So last night, Tuffnut ran from dad, and now you're running?" he asked.
"Sure." I shrugged. "If you want to think about it like that."
"Well dad's gonna catch one of you eventually." Hiccup said standing up. "And only one of you lives in the same house as him." He walked over to the door and opened it before motioning me to follow him. I stood up and went to his side. "But, someone still has flying lessons she has to do."
"Can I not skip today?" I asked as Hiccup pulled me over to Toothless and climbed up on his back.
"No." He said, pulling me into the front saddle. "Because you're taking us both to the Dragon Academy today."
