Chapter Three
Advice

Leo tried to tune out the sound of screaming children, and the endless cycle of mind numbing songs the animatronics sang but it was exceedingly difficult.

Especially when one of the said screaming children was pulling at his pant leg. Finally he turned to him, taking a deep breath.

"What is it kiddo?"

"Are Freddy and his friends gonna walk around?" He asked rubbing his nose in that way kids do, or so he was told. He really didn't interact with the kids that much.

However, despite the child's innocent voice, he couldn't help but feel his body tense up at the memory of the night before, "I uh...I'm afraid not kid..." he offered a smile that he hoped wasn't too shaky. He remembered the phone guy, talking about how they used to walk around and his stomach rolled at the thought. He was glad they were smart enough to at least take that feature away.

It was unfortunate someone had to pay the price for their initial stupidity.

Hmph, seemed to be a common thread here.

"Oh...okay! Thank you mister!" The little boy called as he walked away, presumably back toward his parents. He watched him till he reached a man and woman by a table. Leo nodded to himself with a breath before regretting it and holding his head with a wince. In last night's stress he had forgotten about his headache. The pack this morning had helped...but still.

He tensed a bit as he felt eyes on him, he looked around wondering if anyone had noticed his haggard appearance and was going to complain about it, but the only eyes he found on him were those of the...bear…

Freddy to be exact…

He tensed as he gazed back at the mechanical bear. Why...why did he feel like he was...being glared at?

With a shudder he turned away and looked around at all the guests, things seemed to be pretty normal so he could probably duck into the office and take his break.

At least that was the plan, until a familiar young man got in his way.

Leo bit back his dirtiest scowl and just settled for a less venomous glare. Jamie smiled nervously and chuckled, wringing his hands together.

"What do you want?" The guard snapped, he hated being around people taller than him, it always made him feel like a child in comparison.

"Well...I was just wanting to say uh, congrats...you're still here." The young man gave a shaky smile and Leo felt his anger dissipate. He sighed, shoulders slumping.

"Yeah...well, it wasn't fun. But I'm still here so...hoora." He rubbed his face desperately wanting something to drink…

"Heh...look...I'm sorry if I came across rude the other day...I just...Mike...the guy before you, well he and I are friends, he used to come in with his wife and kids during the dinner rush...and after what happened...him being in the hospital and all...well I guess...I just didn't want it to happen to anyone els-"

"Wait...did you say hospital?" Leo demanded cutting in.

Jamie blinked looking at him, "Huh? Oh yeah, uh, he was put in the hospital after they found him in the back...it was pretty bad...but he is on the tedious road to recovery." The kid let out a breath and messed with his hair. "It just...it could've been a lot worse...if they had gotten the head on..." the kid swallowed looking pale. Leo felt a bit awkward, was he supposed to say something?

"Well...uh, at least it didn't get that far?" He tried offering an attempt at a smile, he was pretty sure it was pretty bad, but the kid seemed to accept it and smiled looking relieved.

"Yeah, yeah. He's still around and that's what counts."

"...hey, uh, he worked here for awhile right?" Leo asked after several beats of silence, an idea forming in his head Jamie blinked before nodding.

"Yeah, longer than you've been here actually. He was the longest running nightguard we had." Leo nodded rubbing his jaw thoughtfully, Jamie seemed to see his train of thought, "I uh…I'm going to stop by for a visit after my shift...would you like to come?"

The guard looked up at that before nodding after a moment, "yeah...I think I'm going to need some advice if I want to stay alive."

Jamie nodded smiling again, this kid seemed like a dang ray of sunshine.

"Okay! Great, meet you in the parking lot at five? You get off then right?"

Leo nodded starting to feel the exhaustion weighing on him, "uh yeah...that's when the evening guard comes in...lucky guy has only got four hours with all these lunatics." The guard grumbled mostly to himself. Only for the annoying little voice in his head to remind him that he had asked for both the day and night shift. Sighing, he rubbed his face again as if he could wipe away the exhaustion.

Jamie gave him a sympathetic smile before nodding, "okay, I'll wait out there. In the meantime...you might want to get some coffee...you look dead on your feet."

"I feel it." The guard mumbled before going to the security room where he kept his bag. Sitting back in his seat he let out a hard breath and looked at the ceiling. "Gonna have to find some time to sleep Leo...now is better than never..."

He adjusted a bit in the chair pulling out his bunched up jacket and using it as a makeshift pillow he curled up and fell into an uneasy sleep.

The double shift guard rubbed his eyes to try and get rid of the sun spots, how was it that five in the evening the sun was still bright enough to practically blind him? Letting out a breath and adjusting his backpack he looked around for Jamie. The rest of his shift had been at that weird halfway point of miserable and bearable. The children were loud but that was to be expected, no one had any accidents and the parents seemed to halfway be able to control their children. The miserable part about it was that he could swear he felt the eyes of the animatronics on him the whole day. Constantly watching him. Especially when he was interacting with the children. It's like they expected him to do something...but what?

He was pulled from his reflections by the familiar thin figure of Jamie. The young man had stepped a bit out of his car to wave him down. His red curls almost seemed to be on fire with the sun behind him. Leo had to blink several times to get the image of Jamie's fire hair out of his head. He waved back to signal he saw him and headed over. His back still ached from last night and his leg had a nasty looking bruise. He was pretty sure his back did as well. But it was in an area he wouldn't be able to look in until it healed. Too much twisting.

As he headed to the car he glanced over Jamie, the kid was what? Probably seventeen? Nineteen at the oldest. He had a nice and disarming face, freckles, curly red hair, and nice brown eyes.

Much nicer than his own, he wasn't sure if it was because he squinted all the time, but people always told him he had pretty intimidating eyes.

He had no clue why people decided that the specific information about his eyes was so important they had to tell him, but it was what it was.

It probably didn't help that he was scowling most of the time as well.

"Hey! What happened? I thought you were getting off at five?" The young redhead asked, and Leo let out a breath adjusting his backpack.

"Kid couldn't find his parents, had to stay late to help."

"Ah, yeah it can get pretty hectic in there, plus with all the rumors about the place...well, kids get extra jumpy when they don't see their parents." The waiter muttered as he climbed back into the car. Leo's brow furrowed as he slipped into the passenger seat.

"Uh...rumors?" He pulled the seatbelt on and gazed at the teenager. Jamie sighed, shifting the car into reverse and pulling out of the parking spot.

"...well...this isn't the only location. There was another one...um, it actually wasn't too far from here. They had different animatronics and stuff, an employee...he uh, well he murdered five kids...the bodies were never found." Jamie finished quietly looking pale, and Leo understood why.

"...oh...yeah I can see why...they would be frightened..." ...was that why the animatronics kept watching him…?

No...no, he said there were different animatronics there.

Plus that would be far too sentient for the hunks of metal on stage.

"On a lighter note...uh, John seemed pretty impressed you made it through the night. I think he plans on holding off on looking for another guard...until...until uh, things change..."

"Until I die you mean." Leo finished with a breath.

"...um, yeah, guess not really on a lighter note."

"You're kinda bad at this aren't you?" Leo questioned looking up at him from under his bangs with a raised eyebrow. Jamie huffed looking flustered.

"Oh I'm sorry I don't know how to spin a lighter note on a conversation about death." The young man looked flustered and Leo couldn't help but smirk a little.

"Aw come on, we work at Freddy Fazbear's! A place where fantasy and fun come to life!" He did his best cheesy commercial man voice and Jamie let out a breath cracking a half smile.

"Yeah, yeah, fantasy and fun is definitely the words I'd use to describe this place." At that Leo chuckled leaning back in his seat.

"Now that's the spirit." He finished with a yawn, Jamie glanced briefly at him before looking back at the road.

"You know, you can probably catch a bit of shut eye while we head there. It's a bit of a drive. I'll wake you when we get there." The young man offered gently. Leo half debated declaring he was fine, but the exhaustion he felt was like an anvil on his chest. He nodded with another yawn.

Man...car rides had always been his weakness, he remembered always falling asleep in the car as a child.

He vaguely remembered making a sound of agreement and Jamie giving a little chuckle before his eyes slid closed and he was cast into a peaceful oblivion of the sweet dreamless sleep.

"Leo...Leo wake up, we're here." Jamie gently nudged him but that made Leo jump and inhale sharply and sit up. He looked around wildly before taking a breath and realizing he was in Jamie's car. The younger man looked at him confused and concerned. "Hey...you okay?"

Leo took a deep breath rubbing his face, "yeah...yeah just jumpy." His hands were shaking again...he swore under his breath and checked his pockets before swearing a bit louder, he had used all his pack earlier. He turned to the younger man. "You got any cigarettes?" Jamie blinked looking at him.

"No...no uh, I don't smoke. You sure you're okay?" The younger man asked once again and Leo took a breath.

"Yes! Yes I'm fine."

"Okay...well we are here. We should probably head inside, visiting hours end soon." Jamie told him gently before getting out of the car. Leo took a breath before grabbing his bag and following.

He swore silently, why hadn't he gotten another pack?

...right. Money.

He took a deep breath and followed after the taller man. The hospital was tall and looming above them, granted everything was tall and looming to Leo. He caught up to Jamie having to take faster steps to keep up.

"So...what are his injuries?" He asked quietly, Jamie glanced at him before taking a breath.

"I don't know the full extent, I just know they really messed him up. I'm not sure if he will be able to walk again."

The weight of that settled on Leo in an uncomfortable way. He paused in walking a moment. If he was already freaked out by the machines, how much more was Mike going to be? Would he even be able to speak about them?

Should Leo even force him to?

"Leo?" Jamie's soft voice broke through his thoughts and the guard looked up after inhaling sharply.

"So, do you think we will have any difficulty getting inside?" he picked up his pace again and headed toward the entrance, after a moment of watching him Jamie followed in after.

"Uh, no I don't think so. He is out of intensive care so it shouldn't be a problem." At that Leo nodded and headed inside, Jamie followed after him.

The lady that sat at the desk was not someone Leo usually wanted to deal with, she was older, greying hair and looked like she could be snapped in half at any second. She was twitchy and Leo wasn't sure if it was because they had heart monitors wandering around prepared to stuff the night staff into morgues or the fact that she had too much coffee. Though more than likely it was the latter and he was just slowly going insane.

"Mrs Hart!" Jamie greeted in his usual chipper voice, Leo came up behind him like a cat that had been woken up from their nap, likely putting off a much less friendly appearance.

"Ah Jamie! I didn't think I'd be seeing you so soon, come to check in on your father? I heard he got good results from his checkup." The woman smiled looking nothing like the twitchy caffeinated woman they had walked in on.

Leo wished he could switch like that.

Though his attention was more drawn to the words the woman said, Jamie's dad was in the hospital?

...could it be...because of the restaurant?

And wait, didn't Jamie mention he had a brother as well?

Dang, he just let a practical stranger drive him someplace he didn't know in the now the dead of night.

Maybe he did have a death wish.

"No, not today, I brought someone with me, we are going to be visiting Mike." Jamie responded easily and Leo glanced up at him before back at the lady.

"Mike…? Oh right, the Schmidt fellow. Poor thing, heard it was a work accident, but I just can't imagine what could have possibly done that..." she sighed before typing something into the computer. The thing was ginormous, but it probably did more than his measly monitor at work did.

"It...was a freak accident. Precautions have been put in place to prevent it from happening again." Jamie smiled easily and Leo blinked at him, that was a blatant lie…

He was learning more about Jamie as this night went on.

"Hm, well, as long as you boys are safe." She smiled at them, "now, I assume you know the way Jamie?" At the question the younger of the two smiled, he nodded.

"Yes ma'am. Thank you for your help." He then nodded to her, "new glasses I see? They look really good on you." At that the older woman smiled, color tinting her cheeks.

"Oh Jamie, run along now, you flatter an old woman." She waved her hand dismissively, adjusting her glasses noticeably.

Or at least it was noticeable to Leo.

Jamie didn't seem phased and smiled before heading down the hallway that led to the patient rooms. Leo looked back at the woman who looked flustered all over again. He shook his head and turned to look at Jamie.

"I didn't think you are the type of person to lie..." he mused quietly. Jamie stiffened next to him.

"I don't like to lie, but according to company policy, everything is fine. You aren't the only one who needs this job Leo." The waiter countered quietly before heading down the left hallway. Leo slowed his gate a moment before shaking his head and following after.

Leo had never liked hospitals, he had been in one too many in the course of his lifetime. All the beeping and machinery humming brought back memories he'd rather forget, which proved to be very easy as they entered the room.

Mike...or who Leo presumed to be Mike, was laying on the bed, bandages all over his body, he was awake, watching the tv, his right arm was on the table with the remote barely held. He looked to be in a sleepy haze as he watched the tv mindlessly. He was young, black hair blue eyes, probably mid to late twenties if Leo had to guess.

If the machines in the hospital didn't make him nervous enough, gazing at this guy and realizing that the bots at the pizzeria had forcibly shoved him inside of a suit that was not made for the human body…

Well it didn't sit well in his stomach.

He took a deep breath, his hands were shaking again, and he wanted to slap them. Sure hospitals intimidated him...but he wasn't afraid of them.

"Mike?" The soft spoken words escaped Jamie's mouth as he leaned into the room. At the sound of his name the man tore his gaze away from the tv and to them, a tired smile broke over his face.

"Jamie...I'm glad to see you." His voice was raspy, like it was recovering…

Probably from screaming…

Leo winced at his morbid thoughts, he took a deep breath and that pulled Mike's attention to him, and a brief sign of recognition flashed through the blue orbs.

"Hey...you're the new day guard right?" All Leo could do was nod, he felt weird, sick, ill somehow. Like seeing this guy was a foreboding sign, a warning. Telling him to stop being stupid and get out while he still could…

"Yeah, his name is Leo. He uh...well he works both the day and night shift now." Jamie offered, and Leo couldn't help but glance at him.

He had sounded so much older out there…

"Wait seriously? John is making him work both shifts?" The man demanded looking more irritated than shocked.

"I...I...I uh...I offered..." the current guard mumbled. Why did he feel so sheepish? This man couldn't be that much older then him...and yet he felt like a small child all over again.

Mike looked over at him and took a breath. He closed his eyes briefly before opening.

"Well, I can assume then that you came to wish me well?"

"Uh...I uh...well...kin...kind..." he stammered out, guilt ate at his gut, he had come hoping to get some answers out of the man...but looking at him now only made him wonder just how much pain he had gone through...wondering if anyone would find him…

That was utterly terrifying.

Somewhere in the back of his head a connection was made, Mike's voice was different from the phone guy...from Buddy's voice.

He wasn't sure if that was comforting or not.

"Hey, no sweat kid. I know why you are here." Mike cut in to Leo's spiraling thoughts. He looked up a bit startled at the endearment. He was at the age where he was usually not called a kid. If anything it was by people substantially older than him.

He cleared his throat trying to get himself to focus, it just seemed extra hard today, and he wasn't sure if it was because of the lack of sleep, or the over abundance of drugs he had taken this morning.

"Um...yeah, yeah, I just...I wanted to know...h...how…? How...do you get past them? How did you survive it? Were you scared?" The questions spilled from his mouth before he could stop them, but the rest of them were halted as he closed his mouth.

Mike let out a soft chuckle and rested his head against the pillows, "oh, I was definitely scared, still am actually, and well...I guess I can't really tell you how to get past them, since I'm here and everything. Clearly I don't know what I'm talking about." If the man could shrug he would. Leo let out a breath really wanting a pack right about now…

"But you are the only one who survived! There has to be a way to avoid them! I spent the whole night in a cabinet because Bonnie got into the office!" He took a breath and put his face in his hands. Mike gazed at him a long moment, and Leo couldn't help but fidget as he felt the eyes of the older man on him.

"I guess that is fair, if I had known there was someone out there who knew what was going on...I would've wanted answers too." The man sighed, and Leo looked up at him, he shifted in his spot, he could see Mike wanted to move his hands, wanted to gesture something, but he couldn't anymore.

That alone made his stomach churn a bit more.

"Look...kid, I'd love to tell you it gets easier, but it really doesn't the longer you are there, the more aggressive they get. It's like...they want you gone as soon as possible. But...the more aggressive they are, the more mistakes they make. Like they are getting frustrated...like they are getting scared."

"But scared of what? Those things could rip off my head if they wanted to!" Leo protested letting out a breath, "they watch me during the day like I'm a criminal out on parole." which was far too familiar a thing for it to be comfortable.

"They watch you during the day? Huh...they never did that with me. They didn't even acknowledge me during the day. Kinda made me both mad and glad." he took a breath, "that place brought upon a lot of mixed feelings."

"I think Leo was wanting to know some of the techniques you employed to keep them away?" Jamie offered quietly, Leo was pacing his shaking hands shoved in his pocket.

"Oh...uh well. Probably leaving the room...it may not seem the safest, but sometimes bolting out of there is what saved my hide many times. They get confused when you aren't in the office." Mike looked like he was thinking back on old times, and Leo couldn't help but also reflect upon last night. Bonnie had been looking for him.

He was supposed to have been in the office...that's probably why the animatronic in the kitchen didn't find him.

He was supposed to be in the office.

"I guess...that makes sense." He mumbled.

"Look...kid, honestly the best advice I could give you is for you to quit. I know having a job is important and all...but so is your life. The clock barely saved mine...please understand that no money is worth all of this." Mike spoke softly, but earnestly. Leo gazed at him quietly a long moment before sighing and rubbing his arms.

"I need to head back, my shift starts soon." He turned to look at Jamie. "I'll be waiting outside." He left the room feeling ill and uncomfortable.

What Mike said...it was true, money wasn't worth his life.

Mike's life.

Leo needed that money. He...had to have it.

The ride back was silent. Leo wanted to sleep but found he was completely unable to. Every time he tried he was shaken awake by Jamie who had pulled over to wake him from a nightmare. How could he be getting nightmares this early on?

Not wanting to accidentally cause Jamie to run into another vehicle, Leo focused on staying awake, scrolling through the radio lost in thought.

When they finally arrived at the pizzeria Leo felt a sense of dread wash over him. Mike's limp form on the bed flashed before him and he screwed his eyes shut taking a deep breath. He would be fine. He survived one night. He could survive two.
